- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25ummm, the Japanese didn't believe pictures captured their souls... that was the persians/arabs. Kind of a long way off.
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Why is there a screen shot from Heroes with a crappy photoshop filter?
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/6627/futurehirona5.jpg - soccerman90, on 10/11/2007, -12/+35people make fun of the idea of tom cruise being the last samurai, but the movie is actually really good and worth watching

- bca102, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18not a mirror, but link to the Japanese site with all the pictures: http://www.lib.u-tokyo.ac.jp/tenjikai/tenjikai95-2/bak1-2.html

Just so you know the story of the movie is based on a real event known as Satsuma's Rebellion. It was the last showdown between the samurai who wanted to preserve Japanese culture and the bureaucracy of the Meiji government that wanted to follow a program of radical westernization, going so far as to consider forcing their entire nation to learn English and abandon Japanese altogether. In recent times the Japanese government has had to work very hard to try to restore and preserve much of Japanese culture which was lost or declined greatly during the Meiji restoration. Before you claim a movie is overly melodramatic you may want to understand what it is about and why it was important. Some events deserve that kind of emotional treatment. - LordStryker, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20With all that self-dicipline, they could probably hold it for an indefinite amount of time. Great way to challenge your buddies to a nice game of "Japanese Hold Em'!"
- Sumyunguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Best Samurai movie evar!

- jiggleflop, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Ask the middle class.
- Ashex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I love how they slipped Hiro in there.
- Kypt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I never did see it as Tome Cruise being the last samurai. From what I understand Samurai is the same whether its singular or plural...so they're talking about the Samurai as a people like saying "The Last Apaches" etc. At least thats the way I interpreted the title...
With that said, I loved the movie! - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"Samurai do exist, here’s the proof"
who doesn't know samurai's were real and so were ninjas?next your gonna give me proof that pirates existed....LIES! - soccerman90, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7the reason its called the last samurai is because it is taking place during the end of the samurai culture in Japan
- Angostura, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I can think of few comparisons less apt than between samurai and homeboys.
- diabolicdiablo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You know Hiro from Heroes.
- vagarach, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The ending section, particularly, poignant even.
- sneeka2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yes.
- skillyas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I wonder what it would feel like, to be of a dying breed.
- matude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Persians and Arabs are pretty different cultures, are you sure they both believed that?
Any reference? It's interesting. - masgrada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ha. The dude from heroes looks pretty bad ass.
- Corinthos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I got a good laugh out of it.
- loganarcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wonder what would happen if the Last Samurai went against the Last of the Mohicans. It would be like that craptastic movie PathFinder, only with samurai instead of Vikings.
- Hoodwink, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The comments for this post really show how stupid and immature the Digg community really is......sad. Great post however, thanks for the pics.
- grungemusic3001, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Samurai vs. Mohicans !!! i like it. It would at least make for a humorous celebrity deathmatch!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9They have special toilets that are basically holes in the ground. Make a little exit room in your kimono and let er rip. The toilets kinda don't work that well now because its hard to squat over a hole and ***** when you're wearing pants....
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Lou Dobbs, is that you?
- pennvneff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Oh man, he took it out. There was a picture of Hiro from the Heroes tv show in there. Funny stuff.
- Jivicus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3These are like Samurai trading cards. How cool would that be?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, I don't know a whole lot about Arabs vs Persians. But I do know that the Arabs disliked having their picture taken because of all that soul stealing business. I extended the belief to the Persians because..... why not? Their regions touch, why would they have differing camera/soul beliefs?
- Arbus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't know why bluezinc is being dugg down. It's the truth! Those kinds of toilets are probably still being used today in some parts of Japan.
- atari77, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2One of my professors in college was of the samurai class. Sure that system was abandoned long ago but they know who they are. They all are doing quite well still fiscally too. Kind of makes you wonder the system was truly left behind.
- m4ngo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Mirror Please :-)
- crossmr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2article is inaccurate, "Samurai do exist, here’s the proof". Their proof of the current existence of Samurai is some really old pictures?
I'm currently an infant, born only 3 days ago, let me provide a picture as proof of that.... - sneeka2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And those hole-in-the-ground toilets work quite okay for normal pants. Just not as good with snowboard pants. ;-3
Glad I moved to a different apartment now where they installed a western style "adapter" on top. - FBMGriever, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Down at 40 diggs... Eesh.
Anyone catch these on a mirror? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ninja joke is old, hush
these pictures are awesome! Feudal Japan must have been a crazy time/place to exist in. - has2k1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The fifth Image has a striking resemblance to the Hiro Nakamura of the future in Heroes. I don't think it is a coincidence, that looks like a train.
- 69Liters, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ahh, Parris, the city of lites.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Arbus
They still use them in Shikoku.... really, really uncomfortable. You basically crap on a flat porcelain slab and then water blasts it down a drain. Almost like you were a giant crapping into the loading section of one of those tube waterslides. - sahaskatta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2coral cache link:

Gotta take one leg out and swing 'em off to the side. Would have had pics, but the site that hosted them no longer exists.
Also, those hole-in-the-ground toilets are still used quite a bit in japan. Especially in the schools. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah, the system is still up and running. That's why almost nobody ever gets fired in Japan, the corporations act like samurai families, the CEO is the Shogun and the executives and management are the samurai. The lower level workers are the peasants who work under the protection of the corporation. The Yakuza still acts like a samurai clan. I actually know a yakuza boss personally.
