- Nudar, on 10/10/2007, -24/+86A lot of racism is occurring on both sides: black and white.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+62Black and white, ha, you guys are obsolete. Us Indians, we come in technicolor.
- dogsouljah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+55"A photograph of the truck was sent to CNN by I-Reporter Casanova Love, 26, who said he is in the U.S. military. "
What a fantastic name! - mikedmoon, on 10/10/2007, -11/+50Wow. What a couple of retards. My question is this tho, they were charged with attempting to incite a riot. Has Al Sharpton ever been charged with that?
- wiskers69, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42you want black people to hand white people nooses? Wouldn't this just be asking for trouble?
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36no, that's pretty much it. there is no other real application. in the south many blacks were hung, both during slavery to punish slaves and after slavery to murder, intimidate and terrorize blacks. a classic image of southern racism was blacks hung on nooses from trees. to this day, the noose, along with the confederate flag, are symbols of racism.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Funny how "circled by trucks" in the headline turned out to be "ONE truck drove past" in the actual article.
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -49/+76Ah, the south. All Wallmarts and bigotry.
- statrick, on 10/10/2007, -8/+35the hate Americans have towards one another is amazing. people are so brain washed.
that kid doesn't even understand why he hates the people he does. - bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25No, usually nooses are used to hang people.
- rstarr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22They're making a left turn!
- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -20/+40WTF is Wallmart? If you're going to bash someplace, get the ***** spelling right. It's not like you can't Google it *****.
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22You probably didn't mean it that way, but you come off as saying that two wrongs make a right.

- izzybr, on 10/10/2007, -11/+27Looks like Trent Lott has some new proteges to work with
- phunlee, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22It was just one truck. Not truckS..the guys were stopped and arrested and charged with what the original noose hangers should have been charged with: Disorderly conduct, incite to riot, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, his 16 year old redneck-in-training. Plus his drunk redneck-ass got a DUI for it.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19As someone who doesn't live in America and doesn't get the references, I have to ask, 'What are the nooses supposed to mean?' Surely they don't just refer to hanging. There must be something else.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+23No, he means that a bunch of black people marching is just asking for nooses to be waved in their faces. Why is it that the most racist people always say, "There's a lot of racism from both sides, the left and the right."
- w116tjb, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18It's called racial intimidation. Look it up. The school's administration should have punished those responsible for hanging the nooses and maybe it wouldn't have escalated this far.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16also, dragging it from a truck is reminiscent of what happened to james byrd, less than ten years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Byrd#The_Murder - Detherage, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I'm from Louisiana, about two hours away from Jena, and these kinds of things just reinforce what the country thinks of Louisiana and the south. That we are just a bunch of stupid racist hillbillies. Because of that, I would like to thank these guys for continuing to help keep everyone's misconceptions.
- Martlet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Quiet! You can only bash America
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Like theres no racism where you're from
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Yeah, cause those crazy Arabs butchering each other, or those folks up in Ireland blowing each other apart. Let's not forget the fun times we saw over in Serbia.
- trendygamer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14As an American who believes that the majority of this country HAS come a long way with regards to racism, this kind of nonsense pisses me off. We all know that in all walks of life it only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for everyone, and I think that's what's going on here. While I don't think these people should be arrested or anything (freedom of speech and all, as long as it doesn't turn into active threats - notice they weren't arrested for the actual activity in question), they do a complete disservice by distracting everyone from the real discussions over Jena. In my mind these discussions are to what degree pockets of lingering extreme racism exist (certain places in Louisiana apparently still see Klan action, of all things in this day and age), reverse racism, the problem in the African-American community with absentee fathers (the student currently sitting in jail grew up without a father and already had a criminal record at the time of the incident) and a truly important discussion to a law student such as myself, the problems with prosecutorial discretion (towards ANY race). Nice job guys.
- rekrapt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Certainly, the nooses refer to hanging... but, more specifically, the nooses refer to the number of lynchings that took place in the south. To be lynched is not the same thing as being hanged. Generally, a young black man - being accused of some sort of crime - would be dragged by a mob from jail (while the police turned their heads), then beaten to within an inch of his life and "strung up a tree". Some southern towns had a "lynching tree"... nothing sanctioned by the town hall, per se... but, well known in the town.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Imminent threat. The very fact that you can't see anything wrong with hanging a noose on a tree to scare black people off just shows the disconnect from reality that exists some place. It's an imminent threat, no different than saying, "If you sit here again I'm going to kill you," which is exactly what that said.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You see, in the South, they used to hang black people in public for various crimes such as 1) looking at a white woman the wrong way, 2) asking for a raise, 3) running for public office, 4) breathing in the wrong neighborhood, 5) breathing too loud. So, yeah, the nooses refer specifically to hanging people.
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13What else would they refer to?
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13are you implying that the only knot they knew how to tie was a noose? i guess they used the brass knuckles as a hammer.
- beaunewcomb, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21I don't understand why this is even an issue. I'm so tired of hearing about this.
What's so unfair about a group of people being punished for beating the life out of someone? I don't care WHAT they said or suggested, violence deserves punishment.
Am I missing something here? I don't get why this is such a big deal. - mrkmrk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14"rich leftist northern Democrats"
Wasn't sure what I thought about you before I read that. Afterwards, I arrived at the conclusion that you're a dumbass. - soulmantim, on 10/10/2007, -12/+24A plague on both our houses.
Since when does the police have the right to pull someone over and ARREST THEM for having rope tied in a nuse on the back of their pickup truck? What gave the police the right to search their vehicle?
Americans need to band together, black and white, because our civil liberties are being taken away by the federal government.
Personally, I despise the truck driver, but he has the right to peacively protest, as does those that protested against what happened from the Jena 6 incident. If we don't fight for EVERYONE'S rights, we all lose. We have to be VERY careful here because these same cops that arrest these two Klansmen are the same ones that will pull over the average black man and search their car JUST for them being black. The civil movement is ressurging, but we must remember that liberty and justice for ALL covers bigots as well.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice EVERYWHERE!
With that said, I wonder if it wasn't Fred Thompson driving that red pickup truck. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+22it doesnt come from both sides, it comes from side with all the power.
I grew up in the south, there is plenty of racism left over from the days of slavery.
everybody thinks that southern hospitality is so great, only problem is it is skin deep.
as soon as I got old enough I left the south, that area of the country is ***** up. - Mononuclear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Why would you need a noose for a moving project? There are a lot better knots to use. The noose is used for one thing and one thing only. That is to hang people.
- profertel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I totally agree they had every right to display the nooses. It made them look totally backward and ignorant. These are certainly members of the human race everyone else wants to identify with in the 21st century. Just like any sensate human being wants to identify with and support people who firebomb churches and kill little girls going to Sunday school. Yah, I want to be just like those kinds of people. They're so civilized and intelligent.
Thank God these rednecks don't understand anything about PR. I always say that-- and sorry, this may be a bad analogy-- when your opponents are more than willing to provide the rope for their own hanging, then let them use it. Everyone has a right to show the rest of us how ignorant and stupid they are and the rest of us have a right to point it out. - soulmantim, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15racism does exist, our government makes sure it is enforced so that Americans can be controlled through divide and conquer.
we need to stand up for everyones rights for freedom, even bigots. - OverkillTASF, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13The thing I don't get is, they're marching because they feel the sentence was unfair, and passed down only because of their race.
Well, help me out here, but if 5 of my white friends and I had beat up a black man, wouldn't it be a hate crime if I did it? Isn't that equally ***** up? A heavier sentence just because I'm white and the victim black?
And since when do you attack someone out of anything BUT hate? What exactly is a freakin' hate crime? I don't think people are like Care Bears, attacking others out of love.
This whole thing is stupid. Even the coverage of it. "6 african americans and 1 white male." Look, if you can reference me by my skin tone and not my heritage, why can't I call you by your skin tone? That blonde haired girl, the guy with brown eyes, the black woman, the man wearing grey...
People are dumb.
How are you supposed to help racism by legally defining it? How are people supposed to ignore race when we have high profile laws that specifically endorse a belief in different races, and special treatment defined by race? - pkonink, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wow, of course all the "leftist northern democrats" can afford to shop at Neiman Marcus. Good job with the incorrect generalizations, how does it feel to trade one form of bigotry for another?
- schweeet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Maybe it's a new product from Apple.
- stodgyoldfart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Racism is, unfortunately, the "Human" way, not solely American. Look at most countries in the world and you'll find the practice (example - Japanese and Koreans). It's part of our tribal culture - other tribes are different, therefore inferior to our tribe.
- EdgarVerona, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10It's really the nature of the punishment (attempted murder charges in criminal court for something often dealt with by detention or suspension), and the public backlash (nooses on the trees etc...), as well as the treatment of these kids in the community leading up to it that was the real issue.
These kids, before the issue began, had guns pointed at them by people when they were walking down the street and other redneck nonsense. In fact, when they tried to take the gun from someone who was threatening them with it, THEY were charged with theft and the guy pointing the gun at them was left uncharged. That's some *****, and I can understand their frustration when even the judicial system in the area seemed ready to sell them up the river. - EdgarVerona, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13With attempted murder? Three kids beat the ***** out of me once in Junior High. Should they have been charged with attempted murder? I believe their punishment was afternoon detention.
- hiikeeba, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Or pinning a circuit board with flashing lights to you hoodie when you go to the airport. No matter if it's a joke or if it's art, someone's gonna get arrested.
- qmeister, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Ok, read after me....All whites are not racists. All blacks are not racists. There are many racists of all colors. All Southerners are not racists. All Southerners are not noose carrying truck driving trailer living trash. There are just as many racists in the North.
- Frostman3D, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I don't think the guys should have been arrested. This is a freedom of speech issue, and even speech that is hateful should be protected. I don't buy the hate crime *****.
While I don't agree with what these guys did, I do think they should have the right to do it. - fozzymandias, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16This is disgusting, if I was from Louisiana I would be so ashamed of my state.
