- NaturalCauzes, on 02/11/2009, -4/+137This isn't Japan. It's Midgar. Get your facts straight.
- alanocu, on 02/10/2009, -1/+116These are great - you gotta go to the source to see them all though: http://www.bouncingredball.com/2009/02/10/12-fanta ...
- akerasi, on 02/10/2009, -0/+108So that's where they make Gojira and Mothra...
- Suits, on 02/11/2009, -6/+75This must be where Final Fantasy 7 was filmed.
- anubis2night, on 02/11/2009, -1/+53Yeah I was really hoping to see factories that turn out monsters. But these are cool too. Of course thinking back to all those ultraman episodes maybe these things do make monsters.
- darkane, on 02/11/2009, -0/+34So we're seeing some pictures on a few Flickr accounts via Digg via Boing Boing via Gizmodo via Bouncing Red Ball? Surely there is a more efficient way.
- amzran, on 02/11/2009, -7/+36It's an oil refinery. What's the big deal? And how did it make the front page?
I posted a article about a little girl who had a foot growing in her brain and nothing, but this goes up. - tuxidomasx, on 02/11/2009, -0/+29One does not simply drive into Mordor.
- Coestar, on 02/11/2009, -0/+27Some of them look unreal, like a 3d render... I must admit, they are strangely beautiful.
- Wiink, on 02/11/2009, -4/+30I knew Japan was Shinra, wonder where SOLDIER is?

Have to say all quite stunning. - Mootabolife, on 02/11/2009, -3/+24BTW.. Aeris dies.
- Zippo, on 02/11/2009, -0/+19Well, now we know where Square got its inspiration from.
- Revlution4ever, on 02/11/2009, -0/+18Those are great. However, they are nothing compared to Gary, Indiana.
When I drive by Gary, I feel like I'm heading into Mordor. - dystra, on 02/11/2009, -1/+17or just go to any oil / chem refinery here in Houston.
- opticwind, on 02/11/2009, -0/+16You also failed to use "Japan", "monster", and "[PICS]" in your title I imagine.
- michaelrsa, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15You didn't include how that foot/brain thing was related to Final Fantasy, Diggers love anything related to Final Fantasy.
- eobet, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15If you travel the full length of the Shinkansen bullet train routes, you will see a completely different side of Japan, with endless rural areas of completely similar small houses, and huge factory districts (and yes, many do seem this clean, but not all are).
When you pass all this by, It does feel like their only purpose is to enable and fuel their enourmous high tech cities, which unlike the small cities where I live (Sweden) do not seem to have many industries (or at least, they are very well hidden).
I've never visited Toyota city, but I think it would be fascinating to see. - Nickdotnet, on 02/11/2009, -1/+16Don't you mean GODZIRRA?
- C4Strife, on 02/11/2009, -1/+13Dugg for slight racism.
- StarExtreme, on 02/11/2009, -1/+13I think you mean GOJIRRA.
- recruz, on 02/11/2009, -0/+12It's just a Mako reactor
- lecturethis, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11what kind of monsters do they make? Are they listed on deal extreme?
- Gr00ver, on 02/11/2009, -1/+12GODZILLA! RUUUN!!
- ok4you, on 02/11/2009, -1/+12Same refinery in each photo.
- Philbert, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10What?? Nooooo!!!!!!
- clarino1, on 02/11/2009, -3/+13These photos are not of "factories" per say. They all look like refineries to me. Not manufacturing but processing.
- pyro0, on 02/11/2009, -5/+15Japan's terrifyingly beautiful "Account Suspended" page?
- johnnybluejeans, on 02/11/2009, -1/+11Looks like New Jersey to me...
- Greengoo, on 02/11/2009, -0/+9I'm gonna *guess* that the foot-brained girl wasn't "hauntingly beautiful".
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -2/+10Silly blog-spam
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -0/+8Sad thing is, none of these pictures are "factories". They are all, however, photos of "refineries". I aughta know, I worked in a refinery for about 5 years.
The difference is that a factory produces a product while a refinery separates gases and ships them into different DOT lines. The tall towers you see in the images must be as tall as they are because many gases separate through gravity. When they feed in a gas, say propane, it's heavier than ethane, so simply loading them into a tower separates them through gravity because of the weight differences.
... sorry... just... being informative. - ElGanyan, on 02/11/2009, -0/+8Did you include a pic of her riding a goat or eating bacon? Well... there's your problem right there.
- soupdawg30, on 02/11/2009, -0/+8This looks exactly like the chemical plants around Houston.
- Halsfield, on 02/11/2009, -0/+8Shinra is the megacorporation, midgar is the town.
- Neuro421, on 02/11/2009, -0/+8It looks just like the New Jersey Turnpike going northbound past the cogeneration plant towards the Holland Tunnel.
- nick041, on 02/11/2009, -1/+8Even the factories are cooler in Japan.
- jtrenton, on 02/11/2009, -1/+7Haha, YES. I'm so disappointed. I clicked the link thinking I was going to be seeing an article about factories that actually produce monsters.
- yocouchdigga, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6IRL Midgar
- Halsfield, on 02/11/2009, -2/+8"The resemblance to Final Fantasy VII's city scapes can not be accidental. "
This guy didnt realize that while playing FF7 everything you do inside Midgar has the look and feel of a Japanese metropolis? Midgar is also a universal parallel for any other over-crowded metropolis with giant factories, neon lights, trashy undergrounds, huge high to low class economic disparity, large amount of corruption, street gangs + mega rich mafia-style bosses controlling them and mega corporations that control a lot of how the city operates and governs its people. However while some cities have a few of the same aspects Japan has every single one and the style of it is so close to that of Midgar that there is no doubt in my mind that they were parodying their own nation's decaying industrial underworld. - PawFox, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Well Pikachu was a factory expirement... but went very wrong... but now we see such dual monsters such as: Magician Girl and Blue Eyes White Dragon.
- lemur, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5How old is this factory? Isn't i at all possible that FF7's Midgar city was modeled after industrial Japan? Everyone is assuming the reverse is true, which to me seems kind of silly. I think FF7 was meant to have some social commentary by parodying some real life aspects of Japan.
- desertDenizen, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5A little bit of HDR too.
- pfhayter, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5I have an idea for a movie...
"When Blogspam Met Quota" ?
Yes, no? - bazzarr, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5The 7th photo down is just the old lithium cracking station on Delta Vega. I used to to do maintenance work there back in 2345. Its unmanned now.
- rupee, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Exactly what I was thinking.
Must've been the inspiration for it, honestly. ;P - PixelPusher74, on 02/11/2009, -2/+6At least they follow the Kyoto accords. How come we are too cool for that? Cool pix though!
- Narrwald, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4No. Donkey Kong = "Stupid Ape"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_Kong_(characte ... - Atomic05, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4The odd character to the lighting comes from the way it was photographed: at night with a long exposure time. These places normally appear much darker and less interesting than they do in these photos, and that's definitely a credit to the photographer.
- teesix, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Pretty much. Those look like the multitude of refineries in Edmonton, Alberta on refinery row. The modules that make up the projects in Ft. McMurray are build here and taken up there for assemblies. You should see some of those plants at night.
Of I forgot, these plants are in Japan so they must be cooler. -
