- MattFromSeattle, on 09/16/2008, -4/+523I don't see any problem with it, my mom put me on soda when I was HEY A PENNY!
- bjenidles, on 09/16/2008, -25/+363I couldn't agree more. They're talking about cocaine, right?
- eigenweasel, on 09/16/2008, -6/+262This is Digg.
They think The Matrix was a documentary. - ohnoerino, on 09/16/2008, -4/+230Hooray for child obesity!
- irfanmp, on 09/16/2008, -1/+221For anyone who doesn't want to strain their eyes, this is what is written:
How soon is too soon?
Not soon enough. Laboratory tests over the last few years have proven that babies who start drinking soda during that early formative period have a much higher chance of gaining acceptance and "fitting in" during those awkward pre-teen and teen years. So, do yourself a favor. Do your child a favor. Start them on a strict regimen of sodas and other sugary carbonated beverages right now, for a lifetime of guaranteed happiness. - pagit, on 09/16/2008, -0/+163sponsored by the Soda Pop Board of America, The U.S. Dental association, and The U.S. Pediatric association.
- BrandonAbell, on 09/16/2008, -1/+131You guys don't actually think this is real do you?
- CurlyFoot, on 09/16/2008, -3/+100Toddlers running around with baby bottles full of Coke at Nascar events is first thing that pops in my head
- eLuugy, on 09/16/2008, -6/+92I drank cola back when i was a baby...
... I'm a loner - AStack75, on 09/16/2008, -0/+79I say fake. They misspelled "gauranteed" in the last sentence.
- SilentRamble42, on 09/16/2008, -0/+71Oh, like there's some magical program out there that can alter pictures. Pssh.
- Jeepinator, on 09/16/2008, -3/+73Smoke. It's good for you.
- Jeepinator, on 09/16/2008, -1/+70I clicked on it.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -3/+63If it said Coke instead of Cola, this would be far better.
- JivePode, on 09/16/2008, -2/+61You spelt penis wrong.
- nysus, on 09/16/2008, -3/+57Fake, fake, fake. Not even that good of one. The "Coca Cola" label is backwards. The language in the copy really isn't believable, either. "Laboratory tests" don't prove kids fit in better socially. And it's highly unlikely they would propose a "strict regimen" of soda.
If this was intended to be fake, well, what's so funny about it? - mac0Fd00m, on 09/16/2008, -1/+52is this real or photoshop? I know the 50's were pretty messed up in a lot of ways (duck and cover), but this can't be real, can it?
- XxpokemasterxX, on 09/16/2008, -0/+49And there's a bonus side effect! Diabeetus!
- megaton, on 09/16/2008, -1/+47I believe he's talking about the 20th century. We are now in the 21st century. Did you miss the memo?
- DemDude, on 09/16/2008, -2/+48I'm pretty sure you just won at least 5 internets.
- spthomp, on 09/16/2008, -0/+43I have a feeling it has to be fake, it's just too ridiculous to be real.
- sexybobo, on 09/16/2008, -1/+39You just admitted to being at a nascar event.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+38If they would take the damn corn syrup out and replace it with the pure cane sugar I used to drink as a kid, I would actually consider giving my child a little sip of soda now and then............
- Jeepinator, on 09/16/2008, -2/+37everything is cancerous. the only thing that doesn't increase your risk is your own death.
- DemDude, on 09/16/2008, -9/+43WHAT? A PENNY?!
Yes, my parents gave me soda both before going to bed in the evening and when I woke up, which was also in the evening.
I think it really did help me obtain the social skills we all need so I LIKE TURTLES! - hokie47, on 09/16/2008, -1/+35What about rum and coke?
- crimson117, on 09/16/2008, -0/+32You fixed their spelling for them... it actually reads "gauranteed happiness".
Photoshopped. And poorly spelled. - GlitchEnzo, on 09/16/2008, -0/+32Vincent21212 is right, it was removed in 1903.
- Kidsturk, on 09/16/2008, -1/+33This is a fake.
Copy editors back in the day must have been lax - 'gauranteed'?
The typesetters and designers must have been lazy too - or that could just be a nice white line where the alternate text was added?
I don't think any ad agency pre 1960s (as the original surely was) would try to sell anything based on an appeal to parents to ease their child's future social awkwardness when 'teenager' was still almost a dirty word...let alone using the word 'sugary'...and now I find myself ridiculous for typing all this...(laboratory tests? really?) if only because a couple of commenters above me seem to think this was genuine.
If you go to the actual flickr page :http://www.flickr.com/photos/sa_steve/2848793719/
You'll see the same comment. As another flickr commenter has observed, the bottle is backwards. - sockpuppets, on 09/16/2008, -2/+32The stupidity in this thread is strong.
- Vincent21212, on 09/16/2008, -5/+34In the 40's and 50's? No it didn't.
- Jeepinator, on 09/16/2008, -0/+26Don't pretend like you didn't want the link to work.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -2/+27Thanks for killing our anti-corporate boner, Dr. Correct.

- MikeDirntRulez, on 09/16/2008, -2/+25Kinda makes you also wonder what all these associations are saying today that we buy into?
Will we find out Vitamin C is cancerous in another 50 years? - freekylaugh, on 09/16/2008, -10/+32Don't show this to Brittany Spears...
- anagoge, on 09/16/2008, -0/+21It's fake, because the font for "How soon is too soon?" is a very modern font, which would never have been used on such an ad because it totally contrasts with the main one. Also, the fact that you can clearly see where someone has filled a 'white' selection around the text is a big giveaway.
- CrazyEddie041, on 09/16/2008, -0/+20What... what are you implying?
- DiggItalia, on 09/16/2008, -0/+18wasn't it?
- drlha, on 09/16/2008, -3/+20Sure, if you look hard enough, everything can cause cancer, even Vitamin C. For example:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/07031 ... - Daxx22, on 09/16/2008, -0/+17Remember they had the Flintstones selling Winstons (Cigs)
- ZeeZee2k, on 09/16/2008, -0/+16sorry to break it to you, but you were adopted.
- aaronisreal, on 09/16/2008, -3/+18Buried for fake...and not funny.
- kevro, on 09/16/2008, -0/+14I thought only scientists where allowed to join Digg.
- Modulo, on 09/17/2008, -0/+14It's not funny because of cocaine. It's funny because they are trying to get people to get their babies to drink cola. Jesus.
- greenblob, on 09/16/2008, -4/+17What's the difference?
- mizzrym, on 09/16/2008, -1/+14Health science back then was barely science.
