Both got what they deserved and should give it up NOW with a record of 0-0-1! Both left themselves open while going for the kill, within 8 seconds of their first fight. Must have shaved the dome a little close...

You say these guys should quit fighting after one loss? Most of the top ranked fighters have tarnishes on their records. To me it's painfully obvious you're trying to sound like an expert, but your comment is extremely naive. You're not even using the terminology right, as kidtuf points out.
What's the point of trying to sound like an expert on an anonymous blog? Even if this were a dick measuring contest nobody knows who you are. Please watch some more MMA before making comments (if you truly like the sport). Long time fans don't appreciate superficial, naive comments. There's a stereotype about people who started watching The Ultimate Fighter reality show in recent years and act like know-it-alls. The only people you're going to impress are those who are totally ignorant of the sport.

Typical ignorant reply
You obviously don't know too much about MMA.
Boxing is waaaay more dangerous and brutal than MMA
Many boxers have died as a result of head injuries suffered in fights
MMA has one death to date and that match wasn't even a sanctioned event
Do a little research before you speak, please- MattB123, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4How so? I'm also new to MMA and on the surface it's doesn't look safer, but I know there often more to things than what's on the surface.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+12Boxers are hit in the head hundreds of times per match. MMA fighters take very few blows to the head.
As I said below, there has never been a death, or even a crippling injury in a sanctioned MMA match. People die in sanctioned boxing matches every year. Boxers suffer from the effects of constant blows to the head in retirement (many before they even retire).
MMA is a much safer sport than boxing, and the facts/data bear this out. My son is fighting in his first match Friday. I would NEVER allow him to fight in a boxing match. - drakenlot, on 05/21/2008, -4/+1How old is he? If you say less than 10, you are a ***** retarded parent.
any sort of fighting at such a young age is stupid since they are still impressionable, and probably will be unable to recognize the difference between a MMA match and school grounds argument, etc.
My son(8 yrs old) is starting to play hockey, but the league itself doesn't allow full-contact until they are 14, and fights are immediately broken until they are 17. - ctp722, on 05/21/2008, -0/+7Simply put in MMA you have more options where as in boxing pretty much the only option you have is to hit your opponent in the head.
Many of them also do Jiu Jitsu/Sumbission Wrestling of some sort which does not produce nearly the amount of brain damaging blows.
Just look at the punches landed in one round of boxing, and compare it to an entire match in MMA - bluto36, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4there are a ton of Jiu Jitsu, wrestling etc matches for kids starting as early as 5yrs old. baseball kills more than any combat sport.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+12Boxers are hit in the head hundreds of times per match. MMA fighters take very few blows to the head.
- swrostmore, on 05/21/2008, -6/+2I don't think anyone has ever gotten their tibia snapped in half in a boxing match.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6And no one in MMA has ever been hit in the head in their CAREER, as many times as most boxers are in a single bout (glove size notwithstanding).
No one has EVER died in a sanctioned MMA match. Boxers die every year in sanctioned bouts.
So, fractured tibia (very, very, very rare), or death/permanent brain damage. You tell me which one is more dangerous. - yohnstoppable, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5I'd take an injury like that over being brain damaged to the point of retardation like many boxers. Look at Meldrick Taylor. He is STILL boxing, and you can't even understand what he is saying. And this is common, unlike the injury mentioned above.
BTW, wasn't the fighter who died in houston in a sanctioned fight? Even if so, that is 1 over many years as opposed to how often it happens in boxing. - swrostmore, on 05/21/2008, -5/+1Comparing getting hit in the face in boxing to an MMA match where a guy gets mounted with one arm trapped, and gets pounded repeatedly in the side of the skull while unable to defend himself is ridiculous. There is no situation in boxing where the fighter is unable to cover his head. What about elbows to the head from guard, which happens 50 times in any given UFC fight?
I'd like to see the stats for what percent of boxing matches end with broken bones, and what percent of MMA fights. I'd say the chances of being injured in a boxing match are greater, but MMA has a smaller chance of a MUCH WORSE injury. - ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5@swrostmore
Broken bones are very rare in MMA. Getting hit with elbows 50 times a match doesn't happen. You are taking a visual, and adding to it without knowledge.
How is permanent brain damage and DEATH not as bad as a broken bone? Even saying that, just using the UFC as an example, there has been one broken bone in the last 70 matches, and that was a guy who broke his own foot kicking.
It seems as if you are saying because boxing doesn't LOOK as violent, it is okay.
MMA is very safe, very well regulated. If a guy takes a shot that knocks him silly, the fight is OVER. In boxing, they give him a ten count to get up, then let him get hit some more. You tell me which is more damaging, especially long term, to a fighter?
In boxing, fighters have died, in the ring, from taken blow after blow. That could never happen in MMA.
I would never let my son box, but I have no problem with him doing MMA.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6And no one in MMA has ever been hit in the head in their CAREER, as many times as most boxers are in a single bout (glove size notwithstanding).
- lineweight, on 05/21/2008, -3/+1MMA matches are a silly sport anyway. There is nothing "martial" about them.
- bluto36, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2explain please
/if its a joke i am dumb and dont get it - lineweight, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1If you look at what "budo" is, you won't find it in a sport, or anything that is remotely publicized, marketed or show-boated to this degree, which is what makes the overly televised showmanship so nauseating to me.
True martial arts are typically practiced in dojos where people don't show off their skill, or feel the need to show it off because you know that it's effective. It is not done for money. It is not done for women. It is not done for the "fame" or "glory" of making the other guy tap out or knocking someone out. It is not done for those who feel the need to prove themselves to the world... - bugsy187, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1@lineweight
The whole point of MMA is to test the different martial arts and see what works. Brazilian Jui-jitsu proved itself to be the most effective in early years. Kickboxing has proven to be the most effective form of striking. Techniques of wrestling have become integral for take downs and take down defense. If there's a most effective martial art (though lacking eye and groin strikes) it's the synthesis of these three disciplines. In an early UFC there was at least one competitor trained in Ninjitsu. He was knocked out early in the fight. Many martial arts tested in the octagon proved to be what Bruce Lee criticized them as; gymnastics. You can't know what works until it's tested. Gracie Jui-jitsu is based upon this. The family is legendary in Brazil for putting their discipline to the test. For decades, key family members were undefeated. It was only until recent years that Royce and other family members suffered losses as others adopted the form. If you remember, or didn't know, UFC fighters earned little or no money for years. It's only after the phenomenon of The Ultimate Fighter reality show that the sport has gained any mainstream publicity and financial support. In the early years, Frank Shamrock claims to have switched over to training for a time because it was too little money in competition. Nick Diaz complained because newcomers like Diego Sanchez earned far more than him. It didn't matter that Diaz was better ranked and had more experience. The UFC began only barring eye gouging, hair pulling, and biting. There were no time limits. Nobody knew what to expect. The sport has evolved to become more entertaining, but retains much of its original integrity. If there's a problem with MMA today, it's the newly introduced marketing, scripted trash talking, and superficial hype. I'm not familiar with "Budo" but if you're talking about this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIowy89IXco
Any of the moves (aside from finger joint manipulation) could be used in MMA, but aren't. That should tell you something. - lineweight, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1@ bugsy187
Just FYI, i'm not trying to be rude, so if something i write comes across that way, please understand it isn't intended that way.
I consider myself to be a purist, and actually don't have an issue with the old UFC fights with Royce and Shamrock in them. Back then though, you didn't see UFC (and the like) fights all over TV, TAPOUT stickers plastered all over pickup trucks, et cetera. It seems to me and this is just my opinion, that through its commercialization what the UFC was originally about has been lost. Granted, i am no authority on the matter, but i do have a bit of an understanding. Now it all seems about show, male-posturing, women and money. It's all over cable, people wear t-shirts advertising it, there are major sponsors, the list goes on. This to me is not what budo is about - the martial way. The only reason i bring this up is because the majority of the grappling styles in use stem from aikijitsu, one of the arts of the samurai. This was not something that was flaunted, taken lightly or even displayed in public. So why is it now? It's not because the art has changed, it's because the people who practice it are practicing it for the wrong reasons (in my opinion). Budo or bushido isn't something that can be really explained, because it is something you do or are, not what you talk about. I tend to stay away from citing it, but wikipedia has a decent explanation of it. I am familiar with that YouTube video, and shows some nice aikido techniques. Anyway, i just think, from my experience, that popular MMA is not true to it's roots and therefore cannot be truly martial. - bugsy187, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1@lineweight
I agree that today's marketing and hype is a very negative part of MMA. It's what I like least about the sport. I felt that this and corrupt gambling practices would pop up as popularity grew. In the not too distant future we'll probably see the UFC on par with boxing in this respect. It's truly unfortunate. Isn't this more a product of typical big business than MMA? The early tournaments had a sort of purity to them. The hype we see around the UFC today has sprung up pretty much in the past 3 years. I cringe too when I see it. If I hear one more fighter read from his script saying "this is gonna be a war" I'm gonna get nauseous. With that said, there remains much of the original integrity within the sport. Fighters are still refining the art and improve year after year. The legendary Royce Gracie has seen his ability eclipsed relatively quickly. For the time being, the sport has hope, but the pressure to become an obnoxious business is ever present. There are no obvious Don King figures (at the moment) and I have yet to see a fight that I believe was purposely thrown. Things will change and worsen, but I attribute that to business and not this sport of fighting.

- bugsy187, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2He'd have to be beaten by multiple top ranked fighters to be proven a "sham," as you claim. As you say though, he hasn't fought "anyone".
His wins have been devastating so far. He's being trained by Bas Rutten, as well. He tossed around an aging (and nervous) Tank Abbot like a rag doll. So far, so good.

- swrostmore, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Colossus is a chump, but he's slightly better competition than Tank Abbot. Colossus stood and banged with an over-the-hill Don Frye, so at least we know he has a chin.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1He has been TKO'd/KO'd 7 times. I said that chin is VERY suspect. His last 4 fights? 3 losses by KO, and the Frye win.
He is a perfect patsy for Kimbo. Entertaining for the fans, and it builds Kimbo's value. That is about it.

- rotten777, on 05/21/2008, -0/+5Obviously you're not too much into MMA. The video posted at the top is very real. The reason the guy on the right goes stiff is because he was hit in the right place. It is quite often. This one with Gray Maynard is just as real. If you want to see someone get knocked out and go stiff, search for Rashad Evans Shawn Salmon on youtube ;)
- Trykt, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Actually when Gray was examined later they determined he didn't have a concussion so he technically wasn't knocked out. He still LOOKED unable to continue which means the No Contest ruling stands (not that they'd reverse it anyway).
Gray's a great wrestler and a good fighter and one of the few non-douchebags to be on The Ultimate Fighter though.

- yohnstoppable, on 05/21/2008, -8/+27dugg for someone who finally gets that not all mma = ufc. Tired of seeing this clip labeled as ufc, or even worse as "ultimate fighting", a sport that doesn't even exist. It's mixed martial arts, and the ufc is one of many promotions
- blah247, on 05/21/2008, -5/+16When you hear American Football you think NFL... inversely you hear NFL you know it's Football. There are people who refer to all Soda as 'Coke' even if it's Pepsi. It's just name brand recognition and MMA wouldn't be where it is today without the UFC.
- yohnstoppable, on 05/21/2008, -3/+9MMA wouldn't be where it is in the united states without the ufc. Big difference. It was around before the ufc (pancrase), was thriving worldwide before the ufc hit it big (pride fc), is thriving today in japan without the ufc (dream, WVA, etc), and has other US/Great Britain orgs that are doing well (strikeforce, elite xc, cage rage, hdnet fights, and soon to be affliction). That is not even counting all the amateur orgs and lower tier orgs that are in the US.
People who refer to it as ultimate fighting are people who have no clue about the sport, and saw 1 episode of tuf. It isn't like the nfl where every team is under one banner (not to mention watching the nfl refers to watching that specific league as opposed to the cfl, college, or hell even high school football in texas). Calling mma "ultimate fighting" is like calling baseball yankeeing or san fransisco gianting. It is ***** stupid, and ignores the many, many other teams - Barclay1188, on 05/21/2008, -1/+16All iPods are mp3 players, but not all mp3 players are iPods!

You clearly know nothing about MMA, yet feel the need to comment from a position of ignorance. Go back to your porn...
I have trained in wrestling, BJJ and Muay Thai for many years. I would much rather see two world class, highly trained athletes test their skills, then a couple of strangers *****.
That you even said that shows what an idiot you are. There are many Olympic medalists in judo, wrestling, etc. that move up to MMA, as it is the penultimate for competition.
But you go enjoy your Olympic ***** show. - VinceNoir, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Actually, I'd probably tune in to the Olympics if they had group ***** scenes. Besides, you're talking about something completely different from cage fighting. Cage fighting is the bare knuckle thing where they throw two dwarfs in and people squirt beer all over them.
- PrintScrn12, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1The vast majority of MMA production are not bare fisted. You don't see too many dwarfs either in bigger events. The weight divisions probably have something to do with that.

- PrintScrn12, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I don't watch MMA for the violence any more than I watching football to see ball kicking or American football for it's injuries. I watch it for the skill, challenge and intensity, to cheer on a player and see who wins. That doesn't mean some fans will be watching simply for the extreme factor. However that isn't too different than people watching NFL for the big tackles or boxing for the big knock outs, for the harm shown rather than the skills and intensity portrayed.

educate yourself a little and you might be surprised how intelligent the fighters have to be in order to succeed in MMA.
i know you get all hot thinking about the brokeback style - Synyk, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1I've been fighting since I'm 6 (mostly tae kwon do). Many of my friends do Muy Thai, brazilian wrestling and judo. So yes, I have a perfect idea of what's going on, and I AM educated.
BUT, you think I was insulting the intelligence of the fighters..which I was not (wtf?) It's obvious the MMA fighters need to think more to escape tricky situations.
That doesn't make the sport more entertaining. I find boxing more fun to watch. You know a good uppcut to the face is nicer to see than 2 dudes on the floor groping. But fine, deny it. Bury me. - bluto36, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1hey thats cool i understand now you are talking your own personal opinion. i have no problem with that but with the brokeback comment you position yourself as someone not very knowledgeable about the sport. but so did i in my reply
