- jayrok, on 05/14/2008, -1/+78If he goes to court, can't he just hypnotize the judge?
- vertinox, on 03/23/2008, -1/+60How does one successfully prosecute this? He could simply say... "The clerk gave me the money of their own free will!"
And on top of that, it is illegal to use mind control on people? I would think most skeptics would scoff at this even being possible. - iplen, on 03/23/2008, -2/+57I would hypnotize random hot girls into giving me head rather than break the law like that
- saxreturns, on 03/23/2008, -1/+44"Look deeply into my pants"
- iplen, on 03/23/2008, -0/+33If he gets arrested, can't he just hypnotize the police?
- Neticule, on 03/23/2008, -0/+32We all know he was just using The Force...
- diceau, on 03/23/2008, -0/+28If he gets caught, can't he just hypnotize the cameras?
- bryano, on 03/23/2008, -1/+28This isn't the hypnotist you're looking for
- jayrok, on 05/14/2008, -1/+28If he runs for president, can't he just hypnotize the population?
Ohhh the possibilities... - jdowland, on 03/23/2008, -3/+20It seems more likely that he offered the clerks a percentage of the take if they would go along with it.
- Shawshanksr, on 03/23/2008, -3/+18in soviet russia the camera hypnotises you
- MarkCiccone, on 03/23/2008, -3/+17Isn't that like... rape?
- mickstephenson, on 03/23/2008, -1/+14Hypnosis is *****, but you can confuse people into handing you over money, I don't know how this works but check out Derren Brown getting a bookies to pay out on a losing ticket.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHyr4kVHhqY - trenchfever, on 03/23/2008, -2/+14Supermarket staff are docile brainless sheep. The selection process is designed such that only the gullible and pliable are selected. If you know your art, the easiest people to con are supermarket staff.
- h4mx0r, on 03/23/2008, -1/+13This is not the thief you're looking for.
- mickstephenson, on 03/23/2008, -1/+12You weak minded fool, he’s using an old Jedi mind trick
- RedStarRizing, on 03/23/2008, -0/+10the cashiers are in on it
- Macuyiko, on 03/23/2008, -3/+13Come on, I always thought hypnosis was ***** because the one being hypnotized had to 'cooperate' i.e.: you can't be forced to do anything. And now this story suggests it actually can be done... anyone have good "Hypnotizing People for Dummies"-links?
- Myonosken, on 03/23/2008, -0/+9Good question. They don't get a choice, but they're also not fighting it....Hmm...We must test this in court!
- MarkCiccone, on 03/23/2008, -0/+9"In every case, the last thing staff reportedly remember is the thief leaning over and saying: "Look into my eyes", before finding the till empty."
Sounds like a super villain. Some one turn on the Bat Signal! - Paulish, on 03/23/2008, -3/+11Darren Brown is that you?
- prompel, on 03/23/2008, -1/+9If you believe this story, then I have a used car for sale.
- DanOnTheMoon, on 03/23/2008, -2/+10Pustulio commands you!
- Aitese, on 03/23/2008, -1/+9"This isn't the thief we're looking for...let's look over there..."
- LokitheComplex, on 03/23/2008, -2/+9So normally you're a tree?
- Daz3, on 03/23/2008, -1/+8Watch some Derren Brown, it is more to do with the power of suggestion than traditional hypnosis.
- glinsvad, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5Ahh, the real-world equivalent of the Jedi Mind-trick: the Bribe...
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -2/+7Some examples of Derren Brown doing this in real life:

Phillip. - DarthShaun, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5At least it's not 'hypnotist sex offender'.
- Protonz, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4And it only works when they are in some kind of pattern. Exactly the kind of pattern that cashiers are in on a boring repetitive shift. He breaks the pattern, temporarily confusing the brain and leaving it more open to suggestion.
/Big fan of Derren Brown - moofer, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Let me know how it turns out.
- DrMatt, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4These are the same misconceptions about hypnosis I battle every day when people call me up for hypnosis work. Hypnosis is a tool (approved and recommended by the AMA and APA) that has MANY medical and therapeutic benefits. You cannot be made to do ANYTHING against your nature. You get get more educated at Wikipedia or my site:
http://www.kivaspirit.org/Hypno/HypnosisInfo.html - theaceoffire, on 03/23/2008, -1/+5This is not the comment you are looking for.
- Jules0, on 03/23/2008, -1/+5of all the infinite possibilities, you steal 800 euros!?
I'd hypnotize my way into a major broadcasting network, go in front of the cameras and convince the world that what we REALLY need is, hmm...a free orbiting amusement park. Using Bush's war money. - Matsky, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Ruined it.
- Exekutor, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4No it's not.
*reads Hypnosis for Dummies* - Myonosken, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4He states at the start of every show that he isn't psychic and the tools he uses. He even shows you what happens in his specials (eg: the Seance, the multiple chess thing)
- stonedgeek, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Anybody remember that x-files episode where there was a guy with a brain tumor who developed this kind of ability? One of the first and best episodes I saw.
- Aitese, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Because it's less likely the checkout girl was in on it and made up a ridiculous story to cover her ass.
- LokitheComplex, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Surely if this was possible it would be done all the time?
- TekTrixter, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3No, but he is willing to pretend he is. If he was unwilling to act like a tree then even under hypnosis he wouldn't .
- inactive, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Is that even illegal? I think he deserves the money.
- pinguwin, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3I call BS on this. I've been involved in self-hypnosis classes years ago and you don't get hypnotised without your consent and it's unlikely that it would occur so quickly and in an environment that is as busy/chaotic as a checkout line. The guy might have been persuasive and brazen (so brazen that people wouldn't notice sort of thing) but I doubt it's "hypnosis", which is a slippery term in even the most controlled of circumstances.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I think the whole point Derren Brown is trying to prove is that they are tricks (sorry Gob, illusions) and he never claims to read minds or control them. I mean, in a way he can control your mind through his confusion tactics, he's very good at what he does. And keep in mind he is a 'skeptic of paranormal pheomnea', he's like the anti-Chris Angel or something.
- moofer, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Why doesn't he just do this at a bank? Stores and banks both have cameras, but at a bank, the take would be better, and you wouldn't have people standing right behind you in line. This guy isn't all that bright.
- jeffaustin, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Hey, Maria, I've got an idea. Why don't I come down to the supermarket where you work as a cashier. I'll look all spooky and pretend that I'm hypnotizing you, and you hand me a stack of cash. Just tell them you were hypnotized. We'll split the cash.
- 4eloBek, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2jedi mind tricks?
- mickstephenson, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2too slow mate.
- MarsSentinel, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2***** you for using the phrase "skill set" out of your corporate cubicle. ;^)
- Dragon88, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Um, someone already does that. Ever heard of Ross Jeffries?
Look him up, he teaches guys how to do that. -
