- deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -4/+242Yea, it's not so much who believes in God as it is people who actually follow a religion.
- firebhaal, on 10/11/2007, -28/+201Don't step on the red ones, hot lava.
- kanago, on 10/22/2007, -16/+175Oregon is going to hell.
- BaoUnit, on 10/11/2007, -11/+169Dugg for linking straight to the picture!
- 1337otter, on 10/11/2007, -28/+119HELL YEAH, GO OREGON!!!
- cusoman, on 10/11/2007, -25/+113The real question around here is: Why do religiously-themed stories so often make it to the front page on Digg?
You might not believe, but the fact that it is so often talked about could also mean that people are searching for something with a little deeper meaning. I know what you're going to say "Or maybe because we think rationally and scientifically and want to expose religion", and that's a matter of opinion. This generation is full of questions about everything, spiritual ones are not out of the question. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+78Interesting to see the east-west divide here. That's not quite what I expected. There are some VERY Republican states in the West that show remarkably little church affiliation on this map. The few dark pockets are full of Mormons and Mexicans.
- rstarr, on 10/11/2007, -12/+59No longer accurate.
This is from 2000. In 2000 I believed in God...and then Gore lost the election... - Lumiras, on 10/11/2007, -28/+72I'll tell you why: Atheism is now the "cool thing" to do. It's a giant bandwagon all of the 14 year olds who dominate this site have jumped on. The thing is, most of the ***** on this site are more anti-theists, and they think that if you hold any kind of religious beliefs, you are absolutely devoid of any intellegence and they dismiss you as scum of the earth. On the other hand, hardcore religious zealots do just about the same thing, except flipped...so, who's being the bad one here?
- HypocriteDigg, on 10/11/2007, -20/+60I'm surprised to find Utah is so religious, oh wait, no I'm not, I live here and it SUCKS!
- roxtar, on 10/11/2007, -11/+50Looks like tornado alley has a big religious population. Interesting.
- logicon, on 10/11/2007, -17/+50To answer your question directly: because a lot of people are sick of religion.
We are sick of the conflicts created by fundamentally incompatible belief systems.
We are sick of people using bronze-aged texts to make judgments over 21st century scientific issues like stem cells.
We are sick of people assuming that our morals are derived from texts that encourage rape, murder, and slavery.
We are sick of people thinking that all of us who don't believe in their mythology are going to hell to suffer for eternity.
You may not realize it but it's possible to separate spirituality from religion. I would wager that most people on Digg value spiritual ideas, we just aren't all that concerned about whether or not Jesus was born of a virgin.
For too long religious absurdities have been given a free pass in our discourse, and now us non-believers are taking action. Deal with it. - toxicityj, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40lol @ Utah
- 1337otter, on 10/11/2007, -11/+40HELL YEAH, GO OREGON!!
/not sarcastic at all - TridenTBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28:( But I live in Oregon..
- nstern2, on 10/11/2007, -18/+42Man I hate living in North Dakota. Don't drink the water it will turn you Christian.
- fixyourthinking, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30No Digg - buried as inaccurate - this is a total of how many people are a part of a religious congregation , not that believe or disbelieve in God. I belive in God but do not go to church. AND I live in South Carolina and I can tell you that 50-75% is a low figure for my area as indicated by the chart.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+41Woo Hoo!!! My state has the least! Go Oregon!
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25Jesus Land
- cusoman, on 10/11/2007, -11/+33It should also be mentioned that this data was taken from the year 2000, thus I'd say this map is no longer relevant.
- JeffH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Haha. If they zoomed in on Portland they'd have to create a new, whiter kind of white for the percentage of religious people. I like Seattle 1000x more than Portland, but I have to give props to Portland for completely sticking it to the man in terms of....everything.
- MadOtaku, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Hmm, maybe because religion plays a huge roll in many people's lives and nerds enjoy statistics?
- alwaysthere, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27Thank God! Oh, wait...
- ooohlala, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20I am very surprised about Florida's "lack" of believing in God. Only 5 counties have more than 50% of people? That seems way off to me.
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23That's it, I'm moving out of Utah and into Oregon.
- esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28egh, i hate the way u lumped me in with the mormons. just dont feel right.
- archer75, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19You don't have to be religous to be republican. In fact I know a great deal of people who right wing, are against gay marriage but aren't religous at all.
- psbpv3o, on 10/11/2007, -21/+36The sad thing is, yeah you honestly can.
- Opiate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Irrational people..
- mrpeg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15They should have done it up in red and blue. Then they would have come up with this map: http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/Election2004textured.gif
- davdav, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I don't think it is right to equate following a religion with not being open minded. That's not being very open minded, is it? :D
- psbpv3o, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14ok....
- FeartheKnighted, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Its called color coding dumbass.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13lol @ Entire State of Utah
- yutt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Yeah... because I'm sure the religious views of the regions have radically altered in less than a decade.
- Jaq524, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13What's wrong with replying to deadowl's comment? Oh, the fact that what you said has nothing to do with it.
- monospaced, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15I wish we were that lucky
- Zaetha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"You Have Died of Dysentery" - Oregon Trail
- shuckl4k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8the deep south is actually pretty damn surprising. i expected it to be blood red.
- lewikee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9That's not how you pluralize that word.
- cavedog0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's from the Census, which is once every 10 years, so it's the best we got...
- nemoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8More accurately this the statistics of people who attend the well established churches. I imagine there are many more people who believe in God in some form.
- dp109, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Right...so because I'm Christian I'm some stupid idiot who can not think for myself. Well now we know who's really ignorant. Oh and I'm from one of the lightest states and the people from my church are some of the smartest I know.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Yea, the Census Bureau has nothing on Newsweek.
- SunbearOZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Actually it is BECAUSE I wish to have a deeper understanding of what's going on in the world that I am an athiest. God is simply too easy.
- semeticstallion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Buried as inaccurate. The map says "Religious," not "God-loving," which could mean some of these statistics are from Satanists, Wiccians and otherwise. It's also 7 years out of date.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Can't be right, the south is all about the jesus
- ArnoldTPants, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7America is short for The United States of America, moron. Try opening a dictionary; it is correct.
A·mer·i·ca (ə-mĕr'ĭ-kə) pronunciation
The United States. - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6i take it you've never been to oregon, aside from the annoying yuppies and hippies it's a beautiful place. the landscape is amazing.
- NiteCoder, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Buried as inaccurate, primarily due to title... studies show over 90% believe in God (no, I don't have any citations at the moment, nor a picture); but this refers to "adherents", or active participants in regular religious activities.
