It is Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in Egypt.

"The fresco of this church portrays "the Virgin breast-feeding the Infant Jesus and Saint John the Baptist."

- Dam6e, on 05/26/2008, -11/+456Ok so I can't explain the history of the image, but the symbolism behind it might reveal some clues:
This type of painting is known as a "Milk of Salvation" scene. It's more commonly associated today with a Vrigin Mary or a Mary-type figure, nursing ONLY a baby jesus. The image represents Salvation through the purity of God, i.e. The Virgin's Breast Milk.
During the first five centuries of Christianity, this type of painting was MORE common than the Crucifixion scene we are familiar with today. In these early times of the Christian movement, the Crucifixion was NOT depicted visually because it was too closely associated with a shameful death and it did not represent the overall Christian theme of Love and Redemption.
However in the 1750's there was a boom in Crucifixion paintings, and thus became the standard by which we recognize christianity today.
I think this is interesting. The fact that Christianity was more of a "hippie" movement in its early stages than anything else, gives us a window into a mentality that, we may think we don't understand, but in reality we do. Love and Peace = Love and Redemption.
Sorry about the artistic lesson, you may now flood this page with "Hey he's sucking on her *****" "***** thing SUCKS" or any other varying web-meme. - michael12345678, on 05/26/2008, -22/+350This is the ultimate end to all those religious zealots' arguments against a woman breastfeeding her baby in public.

- headzoo, on 05/26/2008, -2/+146Comments like yours are what used to make Digg great. Sadly now all we do see is "***** thing sucks" 80% of the time.
- ColonelJessup, on 05/26/2008, -17/+148Actually, breast milk is natures perfect food. Many bodybuilders actually pay lactating mothers for their breast milk, it has the perfect amino acid profile and builds muscle better than red mea...........................

- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -1/+95That's just creepy
- AManWithNoName, on 05/26/2008, -10/+103*IF* it's Joseph. But as Djokuuskaj pointed out, it's actually Saint John the Baptist. So really, she's just being a boobslut.
- Shiva11, on 05/26/2008, -1/+88Correct me if I'm wrong but....
Wasn't John the Baptist only a few months older than Jesus?
He sure looks old. - Dam6e, on 05/26/2008, -6/+90That explains the emphasis on the breastfeeding, because in Egypt Isis was often depicted as breastfeeding. Christians might have used this painting as a way of converting the Egyptians to christian beliefs.
- floort, on 05/26/2008, -13/+88When you're a saint. YOU'RE!!! Short for YOU ARE! It's easy to remember. Crappy US school system.
- Natnie, on 05/26/2008, -3/+70If a woman gives birth, she lactates.
BTW a virgin COULD get pregnant these days... with IVF! - im2emo4myshrt, on 05/26/2008, -1/+65Boobslut isn't even in urban dictionary. You get dugg for that.
- Kumaku, on 05/26/2008, -2/+64Yeah they can, active mammary glands.

- Lukinator, on 05/26/2008, -1/+50John the Baptist and Jesus were also born within a couple months of each other because there is a story in the Bible where the Virgin Mary meets (I forget her name) John the Baptist's mother and John kicks for joy in her womb because he's near Jesus.
- cesclaveria, on 05/26/2008, -7/+55well, actually they can get pregnant... but they would not be virgins anymore.
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -4/+49Extremely normal 1500 years ago...
- SpaceDreamer, on 05/26/2008, -23/+67if that's Joseph, then it's not that surprising,
A few centuries ago, it was perfectly acceptable for the husband to have some of his wife's milk.
And I'm not sure there's anything sexual in that practice. - inactive, on 05/26/2008, -1/+41Pic related.
- baldingnerd, on 05/26/2008, -0/+40sounds plausible to me

- JesusHimself, on 05/26/2008, -3/+42Sorry, I don't do photo-shoots on earth . Muhammad wanted to go down and have a caricature of himself done, but after the outrage of him being drawn in a cartoon, he decided against it.
- tas08, on 05/26/2008, -0/+38Truth. They were both in their mothers' wombs at the same time. I believe John was... 4 months older???

I have Nipples, can you milk me? - HigherLogic, on 05/26/2008, -10/+47Yes huh, the bible says so!
- Isidore, on 05/26/2008, -1/+37The picture does NOT look Egyptian in style to me (nix Isis explanation) - this picture seems more Spanish in style.
It is a depiction of the 'Lactation of St Bernard". The adult man has a tonsure like a monk. In the story Saint Bernard (a monk) prays before a statue of the Virgin Mary and asks her to “Show that you are a mother” at which point, the statue comes alive and squirts milk into Saint Bernard’s mouth. This symbolizes that she is his adoptive mother and the adoptive mother of all humanity - in conformity with Catholic doctrine.
Artists in the Middle Ages and Renaissance made many depictions of this story:

- warlokaz2004, on 05/26/2008, -4/+36You know, the 'evangelicals' are pretty down on sex, partying, etc. based on 'their' interperetations of the bible....I think they'd be blown out of the water of they saw some of the imagery in catholic/orthodox churches. Then again, they'd have a freaking heart attack if they actually read "Song of Solomon" :P
- Impeller, on 05/26/2008, -4/+36WTF is a Babyman?
- Xondar, on 05/26/2008, -5/+36Yes they can. Even MEN can breastfeed and we aren't even capable of giving birth.
To make a woman lactate, you just stimulate the nipple a lot for a period of time. - LoveAndSeagulls, on 05/26/2008, -0/+30i have seen the light.
- jsebrech, on 05/26/2008, -1/+30Another funny one that I saw in the Louvre:
