- rkritzer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+70If I remember correctly, gifts of $10,000 and under aren't taxed.
- moojj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+64I love the photo they used for the article, gives you the impression that the $10,000 was paid in $1 notes
- TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -6/+60So much for selling your virginity.
- shortarabguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45Need more people like that where I work.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -1/+44from what I understand you have to list how much you made in tips. But obviously everyone lies and reports a much lesser #
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39Need more people like that in the world.
- TheSpore, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35As great as this is, I always feel a pang of annoyance whenever the wait staff gets all the credit and sympathy at a restaurant. Seriously, while the cooks are the ones making all the food you love and cleaning the kitchen and doing all the hard work, the wait staff usually just has to bring the food out and maybe wipes down the table, but who gets all the tips? I realize being a waiter can suck too, but in terms of low-wage jobs they aren't anywhere near the bottom.
Also, I don't want to be sexist, but would this have happened if the a guy had been the waiter? It always seems the girls get the sympathy and big tips most of the time. If any diggers feel like being charitable, please think about these things. The cute waitress at your favorite pizza joint isn't the only one who has it hard. - SilverBlade2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27man, I would love to be able to give out that kind of money as tips and not feel it....
- JirkJiggler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26How much education does 10k buy in the states, one semester? Two?
- Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27Yea, I think the limit is 12K. Anything under 12K isn't taxed, but if you go to $12,000.01 then you get ass *****.
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31Are tips taxed?
Seriously, are they? I've never worked in a restaurant or other place of business where you make that "tip hourly wage," so I don't know. - novask, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnlyinAmerica/story?id=3374034&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312
Another article with the pic of the waitress. Shes hot imo. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Bussing as a teenager was sweet, I got paid via handshake. No tax on that!
- arsheroica, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Faith in humanity...reaffirmed!
Also,
"Kind of makes you wonder why someone who can afford $10,000 tip is eating at Pizza Hut, but good story anyway."
Hey, if I was that rich, I would just eat at Pizza Hut way more often. - rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Does this reminds you of the 75 year old granny who has the world's fastest internet connection?
- TheRingmaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I've personally never seen a Pizza hut that wasn't a sit down pizza hut
- driftwood07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16one time i got a $20 tip , i was happy as *****
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Well, if everyone's happy, that's good (excluding the government).
- trippinlikegod, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18But it's not a gift it's a tip. There is a difference.
- Revan01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Yeah, theyre all over upstate and western NY too; they have waay better pizza than delivery
- Mothrog, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Nice to hear, but what a god awfully written article.
- WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12So....if I understand you correctly...you are complaining about....waitresses... with big tips.
- sinurgy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Lucky for her and nice of them! These "big tip for waitress" stories seem to happen once a year or so but it's kinda interesting that a huge tip never goes to a waiter, only to a waitress.
- BassMastr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You have to declare your tips at the end of every shift for two different reasons.
1) So they can tax you on it. (They don't actually take the cash from you to pay taxes...they usually take it out of your pay check. Many places, I'm sure if differs, get paid 2.13 an hour in addition o their tips.) Some places give you your credit card tips at the end of every night in cash and sometimes you don't get your credit card tips until you get you pay check.
2) You also have to declare the tips b/c I forget, but i think either over a month or over a week's period of time you tips plus your 2.13/hour must average the minimum wage or the restaurant has to pay the difference.
/I'm sure it differs slightly from state to state or country. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11At $10,000 it's pretty much whatever they want it to be for tax purposes. Calling it a tip just makes for a good story.
- akeating, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10At a cheaper state-school, it could get almost 2 years. At a good private school, it can get like 2 months.
- tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10At Pizza Hut, you're family.
- deff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"I mean, I work at Pizza Hut!"
Best quote of the article. - mparker7410, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Obvious cover story for some sort of illegal activity.
$10,000 tip? Sure ...wink. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Gift Tax: Non-taxable Gifts-
"Tuition or medical expenses you pay directly to a medical or educational institution for someone"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_tax#Non-taxable_Gifts - jcaino, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's ***** up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government ***** in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college ***** I got two words for that: learn to *****' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big *****' surprise.
- elsJake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7when it's $10k ..it's definitely a gift . It was just given at the restaurant as a surprise. They probably didn't know her home address.
- SourWorm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7There are Pizza Huts where you can't sit down? ... Seriously, I have only seen onces with seating, and I don't think they deliver (not sure though). Lots of Dominoes with delivery only though.
I was also at a Pizza Hut that ran out of cheese! Was quite the experience .. got some free breadsticks and decided to wait 40 minutes for an employee to drive down to the nearest neighboring Pizza Hut. The place was overall very messy and the only employees I saw were the teenagers hanging out in the seating area. - WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Uncle Sam? I believe the proper term nowadays is Uncle Benito.
- markingtime, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7some of you people must be like 14 or something. It used to be that all pizza huts were sit down places. only recently has it become more of a fast food/delivery kinda place
- phyllidae, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6she's family now?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8She should have just called Ozzy, and been like "Hey man, we gots the same name, we must be related! Gives me some of that dough!" And then she'd have it made.
Now I have to go to Denny's, and tell people my wife died in a car wreck, and I can't pay for her funeral because I'm too poor, and hope someone gives me money. - HA5TY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Sooo.. theres still nice people in the world
- akeating, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I've even seen a Pizza Hut buffet!
- dodus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Every restaurant I've ever worked at, it's a don't ask don't tell policy. You don't bother them if for some reason you made less than minimum wage that day; and you don't get your crazy Saturday night bank taxed.
- techmonkey4u, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5yes, try retiring on less than what a full-time, minimum-wage worker makes in a year.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5if it is paid directly for her tuition, it is not taxable.
- WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5...or maybe someone will arrange to take you out of your misery some other way. ;-)
- stevemis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"And she's having trouble getting people to believe her. Osborne says a co-worker thought she was lyjng."
Somehow, I think the IRS will believe her. - Jaq524, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5But this tip had nothing to do with the food, and everything to do with the fact that she had to drop out of college for lack of money. The article says the family were regular customers, so they probably got to know this waitress as a friend.
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5*****... Pizza Hut pools tips.
- DarkPrince11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4there's a northeast Indiana?
- catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hot girls get good tips. It is one of the oldest traditions of mankind.
- trippinlikegod, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The kind that gives head in the bathroom.
