- DonnieMarco, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Does this mean Osama Bin Laden studying Monty Python's ministry of silly walks in a bid to avoid detection?
- Theoxenmooving, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7What you are proposing is a spy satellite in geostationary orbit. That's a telescope/camera ~100 miles away looking at a person versus a telescope 22,000 miles away looking at a person. do your math.
- Theoxenmooving, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7I have text on my face?

- Oea420, on 09/05/2008, -4/+10Wow... so they'll be able to see all the sexually active females.. on the planet!
- Theoxenmooving, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7The article says this was tested on VIDEO from a 6th story window. I'll give them that the resolution would be the same from orbit, because spy sats are very, very classified, and no one outside knows the resolution they are capable of. It's the fact that they used video that says that this is impossible. Spy satellites can't record video. They orbit very low, so they're only over a target for a few seconds every day. You'd need an armada of spy satellites, each in the same orbit, each trained on the same subject to put together a video of someone walking. Patently impossible.

Brought to you by The Onion's British cousin, The Daily Mail - joeanon, on 09/05/2008, -2/+7Sorry, but this sounds like one of the dumbest ideas ever.
I guarantee there is no shadow satellite. It's some BS story designed to scare organized crime and terrorists.
Get real, matter blocks light and casts a shadow. It's not a spectrograph of your body, it's a shadow. If they could identify you with your shadow, why couldn't they with your real image ?
It's a pretty dumb idea to identify people with a shadow anyhow since it's one of perhaps the least unique identifying features you have. All distortion of light and atmosphere, there is no way a shadow is uniquely identifiable in a consistent manner with today's contrastingly primitive optics.
You'd obviously have far more detail and uniqueness from the real image, not the shadow cast by your opaqueness which carries no unique data and distorts easily.
This is like the people who think the FBI can get your finger prints from low res internet pictures.
*****, there are so many reasons why that wouldn't work but perhaps one in a billion times unless you were purposely taking high res shots... of your fingers. Consider focus, macro settings, resolution. Fingerprints are done in black and white BMP images last I checked. Like freakin NASA images or something they don't need color just high res detail to outline the lines in the fingerprint.
Yea... the US has shadow satellites, a missile shield and UH... genetically altered monkey soldiers ! We swear Russia and China.....better watch your shadow because the monkey soldier is on your back. Will the dollar go up now or do we have to make up some other threatening technological breakthrough ...
They can spy on your BREATH !!... Everyone... stop breathing !!

- McNandatron, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I'm confused... do the Daily Mail think that we know Osama Bin Laden's walking style?

- fandyboy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5What happens if you just wiggle your hips a little less and shorten your steps?!!? I've h4xed it already!
- Recoil, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5Why the hell would anyone want to identify a person from their shadow? Are they attempting to spy on ninjas or something?
- NinjaBoy, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Well I must say most people dont actually realize how spy satellites work. You see the altitude they have to orbit at means they generally only get a 6 min windows to take a pic of say korea every three days. Most scientists agree that we have between 2 - 5 satellites in orbit at any givin point. So why they are GREAT to spy of military bases and citys. UAV's or a sniper team with a camera are much better for spying on people.
Berkly has a lecture about it online if you are really interested in these type of things.

- archivist, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3the things US/UK do just to identify people... why not just send flying-nano-hooba-jooba-machines in the air, home it down under the skin of the people or mix it with their food and track them wirelessly? isnt that much easier? i mean, seriously... be more realistic with your resources.

- intilli4, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3I did work inside the Geo-spatial intelligence agency and boy let me tell you that not only can they identify you they can easily tell if you have broken bones, freckles, they can read your shirts & documents you are carrying and they can even listen to your conversations. I know you are skeptical about this but, trust me I honestly seen it with my own eyes. I also saw fracture points of the world that we can bomb and totally demolish parts of a continent if we so chose to.
