- Mastertone, on 09/21/2008, -23/+397Come on, people. You can't generalize about anyone in this world, let alone homeless people. Schizophrenia, Bi-polar, serious depression, drug addiction. The voices in their head might be telling them not to wash their hands...and you can forget about a job when you're that ill/depressed/addicted.
Try talking to a homeless person. It will open your eyes. - Arkanoid22, on 09/22/2008, -4/+335"If a homeless guy has a funny sign, he hasn't been homeless that long. A real homeless person is too hungry to be funny." -Chris Rock
- infernoskull, on 09/22/2008, -31/+295Everyone thinks its so easy with the "just get a job" mentality.
I am not exactly sure about this, but i always was under the impression that you needed to have an address to get a job, so you could be taxed properly. So you cant get a job unless you have a home, and you cant have a home usually, unless you have money, so its a vicious cycle.
also, try going into a job interview looking like a dirty bum, and see if you get hired.
Trust me im sure if he could get a job he would. Unless hes one of those hippie backpacker freeloader kids who wants to live on the land and make it on his own so is homeless by choice... in that case, ***** HIM! - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -4/+202I think you're absolutely right. There's a lot of homeless people where I live and occasionally I'll catch them shuffling through the garbage cans later in the evening downtown. When I have the money to do it from time to time I'll invite them to have dinner with me and I'll buy em a sandwich or something and sit and talk with them. I can tell you that a lot of them have mental health problems which severely impact their ability to get a job. There's one lady that sits downtown during the day with a cardboard sign that's well put together and lists her job qualifications like a mini resume; things like how fast she can type, experience working in an office, etc. But she's dirty and looks homeless. Who would hire her? How's she going to get a job?
Something I've learned through sitting and talking with people who are struggling is that ALL of them are human beings and deserve to be treated as a human being. A little compassion goes a long way. - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -8/+174I'm like Clinton I want....blowjobs.

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/black_guy_ask ... - m0tbaillie, on 09/22/2008, -1/+87This is very true. There are plenty of sociological research studies done on homeless populations and upwards of 80-85% of homeless in the US have some sort of crippling physical or mental disability that keeps them from being able to work.
- Samg85, on 09/22/2008, -9/+81It's not easy, but it's possible. Just ask all the mexicans standing around Home Depot. They don't have houses or anything, but they're just looking for work just to make it.

- solracarevir, on 09/21/2008, -34/+93Most homeless have lost all hope, so they only ask for what they need to stay alive: Food.
They wont loose 5 minutes washing their face while they can spend those 5 minutes asking for money - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+58BITCH I LIVE IN A ***** TRASHCAN
- Awspire, on 09/22/2008, -7/+54Friggin bums. I used to be a naive liberal sucker and give these free loaders money every time. That is, when I gave a woman twenty dollars, who was literally crying for money to eat since she hasn't eaten in days (the cash i gave her could have fed her for two days). Later, after leaving a nearby meeting, I found her doing the same act to another sucker. Never again. My spare money now, only goes to charities for disadvantage children and disease research.
- swazo, on 09/22/2008, -4/+49People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.
This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants.
Outside his pants. I'm guessing his resume isn't all up to date.
I'm predicting some problems during the interview process.
I'm pretty sure even McDonalds has a "underwear goes inside the pants" policy.
Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically I'm sure it is on the books. - zdiggler, on 09/22/2008, -0/+44I used to hang out with homeless, you're right, some of them just gave up.
In fact I know a homeless person who used to be a good programmer. With divorce, lost kids and house, turn into alcohol and down hill from there. It was in 2000 I met him, I had a laptop with me, just hanging out with bunch of other friend and him drinking after work at a park. He wanted to checkout my laptop, I only had qbasic for programming there. He wrote a program on that animate the text you input with different colors in like 5 min.
Then I know on have serious bipolar. For weeks he's clean cut, next week he's filthy, goes on and on.. - random255, on 09/22/2008, -4/+45I met a guy in Kansas City who asked for change to make "a down payment on a cheeseburger." I had to oblige.

- vat0r, on 09/22/2008, -6/+38Honestly I doubt he'll buy food if you give him money ;) I'll buy one of them a sandwich every once in awhile but otherwise you're just contributing to their various addictions.

- piratearggghhh, on 09/22/2008, -7/+31That guy is not a real homeless.. freshly shaved head, no signs of a cart anywhere, sign is too clean and new....writing is too neat...actual dollar bills in the cup. A real homeless guy would leave only $1 and stash the rest.

*BOOM* - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -1/+23I don't disagree with anything anyone is saying here but I just wanted to point out that a lot of homeless people have serious mental disorders or even physical problems (stuck in a wheel chair) that makes finding work difficult. That's not to say all of them are like that of course. Just don't believe the stereotype that all homeless people are the same, their problems vary greatly from person to person.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b19/sandyclaw/co ... - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -2/+21That's why we have homeless shelters that help homeless people with that type of thing.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -16/+35This man may not be as homeless as much as he is mentally ill via: depression, drug addiction etc. Nice and simple minded of you people to tell the downtrodden to "get a job". You see, these people are not empowered like you and I: we have jobs, educations, functional networks of family and friends, computers, time to waste.
Your a big person that you can look a homeless man in the face and tell him to "get a job". Well you know what? ***** you. You think it's perfectly fine to send people off to war? You think it's ok to bail out white collar criminals for their corruption? However, when faced with any complex social ill like homelessness, all you can say is "get a job"?
Tell you what big man, since you got all the answers, head on down to your local, disenfranchised neighborhood, y'know, the one that has all the people with the darker skin than yours and step up alongside any seemingly homeless person or your everyday do nothing, lazy ass ***** and tell them "hey man, why don't you just get a job"...and let me know how that works out for you. Einstein - JK1150, on 09/22/2008, -1/+19not defending homeless people, but they aren't allowed in mcdonalds. in america, cops will chase them out of everywhere and most city fast food joints will only give you a key to the restroom if you buy something or aren't homeless.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -0/+18Thanks. If you didn't throw this comment in I was gonna.. it's mandatory in such situations.
- ModernMindofM, on 09/22/2008, -5/+23Yes. Your last paragraph is right-on. The only thing worse that someone who fails to grasp the complexity of homelessness, is some damn kid who trivializes the gravitas of a real homeless person's situation by trying to experience it.

- williamlee, on 09/22/2008, -3/+20Try talking to one that isn't a gutterpunk ***** head.
- spammishking, on 09/22/2008, -4/+21You know, I too have not had an address, and VERY little money, but I was able to get a job on more than one occasion during my Jack Kerouac days. You just have to have initiative and set your sights low. then as you build up you get a better job.
exception are the crazy people, but the majority are just lazy, or trying to work the system out of a free lunch. Don't give to these people, give to the red cross or some other organization so the proper people get help - pintomp3, on 09/22/2008, -1/+18a lot of homeless people have mental problems, many are veterans who have untreated PTSD. it's easy to just say "get a job" when you haven't though about why they can't.
- 1hrSleep, on 09/22/2008, -0/+17@Solcra: I think that's the problem. Hope. As long as you have hope, determination, and the will to get back up, you can do it. It might not happen instantly though.
@vat0r
On my way to catch my skytrain from work, a homeless guy asked me "not to ignore" him and if I could spare some change. I actually didn't hear him because I was listening to music and he was about to leave when I got to turning off my music and pulling out my earbuds. I asked him what it was he said and he repeated his spiel (he has it well rehearsed, it seems. XD). I didn't have any change (no more than I needed for transit) and he was about to leave again, not believing me, when I said, "Hey, wait! Look, I only have change for my transit but I'll buy ya dinner." (It was 10:30PM).
So, walked with him to the closest McD (his choice, I offered Subway) all the while I thought he might have been one of those fake homeless people or something. He asked to use my phone but I had to turn him down. He thought it was because I was worried he would run off with it but it's actually because I keep a very small balance on it (Pay As You Go) for emergencies. I noticed that he had some weird ticks. I think, now, that he may have been a drug addict or mentally unbalanced. Relatively young guy. Maybe late 20s or early 30s? Something wasn't right with him.
To be honest, I didn't really like him. I hold the opinion that even without a home, you don't have to be a bum. He seemed to have a one track mind and that track wasn't anywhere close to here and now. I was actually really close to being in his situation (well, homeless, anyways) so I think that's what made me different from all the other people he asked. I could easily imagine being in his position. I wouldn't want to be ignored either. - BossKey, on 09/22/2008, -2/+19Don't know why you're being dugg down, you're right. Giving money directly is almost always the worst choice, giving to support services is much better. For one thing, so they know that's where the money went. Of course, some do not want to go to shelters. I have offered food, and if they don't want it then I know what it is they really want the money for.
Also, the scams involving "breaking emergency" sob stories are well known. MANY repeat the same story day after day. Or hour after hour. - RandomTidbits, on 09/22/2008, -4/+20Listen I do charity work all the time. A lof of homeless people don't want to do anything, they just want to rely on the govt to help them out. They want a bailout all the time. They don't do anything, so a change for this loser on the picture (who probably ran away from home cuz he didn't want to listen to mommy & daddy's houserule, which is quite common) wants Obama for change his $ life $.
if and if he was bi-poloar or a schiz then he could've gone to programs to help him out. there's a lot of help out there, you just have to accommodate your lifestyle for it. it isn't it. change comes within YOU not from some govt or handout. - scoot87, on 09/22/2008, -0/+16http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUmYGLIubho
- ousthouse, on 09/22/2008, -5/+21Democrats (and Republicans)... how will a bigger government help this guy?
- BossKey, on 09/22/2008, -4/+19I would not give change to a man who:
a) would take out a loan to buy a cheeseburger
b) missed an opportunity to make a begging sign that says "i can has cheezburger?" - SpeedSteamBoat, on 09/22/2008, -2/+17God damn, the only thing worse than some ignorant jerk spouting off at the mouth about how homeless people should just "get a job" is some ignorant jerk citing their sister/brother/cousin/parent/self who was "almost homeless" or "has x/y/z illness/wrong with them and is doing fine."
The insunaution that it's so easy to pull yourself out of such a situation is stupid. Do you not realize the simple fact that your sister with cerebral palsy has a HUGE advantage over these people in you and likely your parents? She has the kind of support someone in her position needs, and that none of these homeless people have. I guarantee you that without family, friends, and that church around that care about her, your sister would be much worse off and potentially just as helpless as most of these people. She could very likely be homeless herself. If you honestly believe that she simply has some unique "will to do something with her life" that these other people lack you are kidding yourself if not delusional. - ivancuriel, on 09/22/2008, -9/+23Homeless people are homeless because they choose to be, Its their lifestyle. 95% of the homeless people on the streets don't want to work, and if you offered them a job, they most likely wouldn't take it. I think some homeless people prefer to be homeless, and just beg for change, they get through life with the bare essentials in life that can be easily obtained. I think some homeless people are happy where they are, while those that aren't happy being homeless, they eventually take a stand and get out of the streets. The homeless people begging for change are the ones that will be homeless for the rest of their lives.
