- duggtodeath, on 10/29/2007, -2/+78I showed up to answer the ad, but Chris Hansen asked me to take a seat :(
- gbarberi, on 10/29/2007, -2/+51WTF!? Repeated calls from the grandmother to a local government agency (Department of Children and Family Services) get ignored. Post an ad on craigslist and the government comes running.
- lhbaker, on 10/29/2007, -1/+48Honestly, who hasn't tried to give their daughter away on craigslist at some point in their lives?
- duggtodeath, on 10/29/2007, -0/+25*sigh* Why don't you have a seat over there?
- getrealnow, on 10/29/2007, -3/+25WTB Daughters PST!
- Salgat, on 10/29/2007, -0/+18Chris Hansen: So you've done this before?
Conan O'Brien: Yes, this is my second time. - mishabear, on 10/29/2007, -1/+19There are people who want to adopt but she can't give her kid away?
- toastgodsupreme, on 10/29/2007, -7/+21All children (and people for that matter) should have healthcare, regardless of family income.
I don't care if you're bill gates or the homeless bag lady, health care for citizens is something that should be taken care of by the govt. Why is that so horrible? I'd rather my taxes went towards a universal health care system than a war. - coolcash2005, on 10/28/2007, -0/+12man, CNET news is a pretty good site but its so ugly
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/28/2007, -0/+9What are dollars?
- DevilsLeftHand, on 10/28/2007, -0/+9So, I take it this kid is no longer available?
j/k...seriously. - SpectreNexus, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7Craigslist? What was she thinking?
Everyone knows EBay is the place for that - crapmatic, on 10/29/2007, -1/+8Reading this I can't help wondering what would happen if the Craigslist ad turned out to be fake. Is anyone checking these ads for authenticity? It's scary that you could probably get your own kids taken away by some malicious person posting an ad and signing it as you.
- mongoloidplease, on 10/29/2007, -2/+8Don't bring tubgirl into this.
- dimebags, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6excellent point. i always wonder about those issues when i hear about people getting prosecuted on evidence like email, IMs, etc. i'd like to see someone succeed in a defense against this type of 'proof'.
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7Whats the going rate?
- dimebags, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7great idea! we should let the government decide when we can have kids. the all-wise congress can even come up with the criteria for us. you're a genius dude.
- alibenx, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6I have a hard time discussing libraries when people tell me it's free to check out books. Come on man, everyone realizes that it takes tax money.
- adrianmonk, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6It's true. The government dropped the ball by not doing anything initially. But at least they did do the proper thing the second time around, after the craigslist ad. Social services agencies and courts often let kids stay with their biological parents, but in this case she is not getting them back.
- WilliamDavis, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5If I had to find a home for a daughter, I'd probably pick a craigslist response over the Department of Family Services.
- Smiths, on 10/28/2007, -1/+6Now the turds are saying $111,000 a year?!?! Last time I heard, the figure they liked throwing around was $82,000 a year. I'm starting going to go way off topic of this thread, so I'll stop. LooseCannon1, stop listening to the radio and start doing some actual reading about the SCHIP bill.
- heilig, on 10/29/2007, -4/+9Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters...sell them to me. Sell me your children.
- MrSteamTank, on 10/29/2007, -2/+6Why should she be allowed to give away her children at no consequence? She should be forced to pay child support or be put in prison.
Oh wait! That only happens to men. - adrianmonk, on 10/29/2007, -0/+4The article said that she had a relative who wanted to help and who offered to take the kid, but she refused and instead offered the kid (and a second kid who she had later) to strangers on more than one occasion.
The problem here isn't that she wanted someone else to take the kids. The problem is that she displayed no interest or care in choosing someone who would treat them well. - dimebags, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3i'm homeless and writing this comment on my laptop that's hitting a free WiFi at a coffee shop.
- irvman21, on 10/29/2007, -3/+6She should be required to undergo a tubal ligation before anyone even considers giving this idiot her children back.
- clothmonkey, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3Ah, Sunday Morning and spam is in the air...
- mongoloidplease, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3Dollars or warcraft gold?
- adrianmonk, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3I agree except for one thing: the tubal ligation should still be required, but it should not be connected to any promise to consider giving the children back to her.
- cogit0, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3love the Blues Brothers reference.
- czeman, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2She posts an ad on Craigslist to give away her daughter and DCFS responds. Didn't she get what she wanted? Did put a disclaimer saying they weren't eligible?
- mojibake, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2Really, what's so wrong with trying to give your children away? If you don't want them and won't take care of them, relinquishing them to the custody of someone who will is at least a humane solution. Parenting in nature often goes the same way. Some animals abandon their young, and others actually eat them.
For some creatures and species, it's normal...it's just what they do.
Mankind seems to have this idea that we're so far removed from our animal nature, that behaving in such a manner is abhorrent. Our ***** judgment is the only thing which makes it bad or good.
This, to me, is really a tale of bureaucratic inefficiency. - helf, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2It usually doesn't cost to use the library computers for a short length of time. I work at my local library, and we let you on for 60 minutes if you have a photo ID and 120 if you have a library card. No fees at all (well, if you have a card, you can't have fines on it)
- V1ncent, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2*sigh* I hate it when I'm the second email asking for free stuff! AGAIN.
- WilliamDavis, on 10/28/2007, -4/+6I think everyone in the world should have free health coverage. Unfortuantely, health coverage isn't free. Not previously, not now, and not in the future. When people call it free, it's hard to even have a conversation about some type of universal coverage.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2This piece of trash should not only be rendered incapable of having children again, but never allowed NEAR children again.
Lock her ass up and throw away the key. - HereticChick, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2Library :)
- yogione, on 10/29/2007, -2/+4She sounds schizophrenic. The state of course, bumbled up everything. Letting grandma have custody would have been a better, easier, cheaper solution for everyone. She shouldn't be having babies, but do you REALLY want the state making that decision for women?
I'm hoping all the offers here to buy the child are jokes...they are jokes...right? - tycity, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2It's about $1600 in NY State.
- jdpalite, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2Where do you live that a good HMO costs $5,000 a month? I live in Boston, have a decent HMO, and the family plan costs about $500/mo.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1People like this should be sterilized.
- fafaforza, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Ahhh! So that's how all those people I see at a Starbucks can sit there in the middle of a Wednesday sipping coffee and reading blogs. They're homeless and *have* no jobs or anywhere in particular to be. Makes sense now.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Its the Windows XP theme "Luna" :-D
- adrianmonk, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Grammar nitpick: "mother" wouldn't be capitalized even if she were the greatest mother that ever lived. It's only capitalized when you're using it in a way that functions like a proper noun.
For example, should be capitalized:
"I think, Mother, that this is the best roast beef you've ever cooked."
"We should decide what we're going to get Mother for her birthday."
Should not be capitalized:
"My mother got a Ph.D. when she was 30."
"Steve's mother is very involved at his school." - rreadysetno, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Public library? Although where would she get the money for the minutes?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1This comment could only be funny on a site like digg but man it sure is funny.
- astrotrain, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1** smack **
- astrotrain, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Health Care should be free... period... every American citizen should be entitled to it... young, old, rich, poor... Only one discouraged from it would be the Illegal Aliens (and I don't mean E.T!).
- s0nicfreak, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1You've never lived in California, have you? Go live in San Francisco for awhile and you will see that there are tons of homeless people with access to the internet. There's the literally homeless, sleeping on the street (when the shelters are full - and btw, some of the shelters provide internet access too) people who hang out at the library all day... and there's the technically homeless people who make money for motels by prostituting theirselves on craigslist... and there's the people carrying around a laptop, hanging at starbucks all day, and looking like just a student or something until you see them actually sleeping outside... Heck it's hard to NOT have internet access there...
- adrianmonk, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Reading the article, it said she also tried to give another kid away to a neighbor she barely knew, and apparently the evidence for this was a notarized piece of paper saying she was giving the kid away.
So while fake craigslist ads do happen, in this case, I think it's pretty likely it was genuine. -
