First off, they're 19, not 16, and second, banks always err on the side of caution, because they're federally insured, anyway, so as long as they cooperate with any demands, no matter how little threat, they're always in the clear. You'll also notice that the amount stolen is never disclosed publicly. Even if the teller wasn't in on it, the default response to such a note is to give the money and hit the alarm button. And tellers have boobie-trapped money as well that they draw from to give to the criminals.
