- slugicide, on 10/12/2007, -31/+385Nothing says "fundamentalism" like an elaborate, sexually-charged public ceremony for daddy's little girl. Or, "Hey, pumpkin, we're gonna have a big ol' party where everyone talks about your sexuality! Aren't you excited?"
- Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -35/+345the funniest thing is, in another story(i think it was done by CNN) they listed off the stat that MOST girls who pledge to be celibate not only have pre-marital sex 70% of the time, but are so un-prepared for it that 27% end with pregnancy's...
Teaching celibacy does not work. It just confuses the kid to go against nature, and when natural instinct breaks it(70% of the time, apparently) they are so ignorant to whats going on, they end up getting preg. or STD's... The parents who support this crap are beyond stupid... They are crazy. I guess finding out there precious little girl is a HIV infected mother-to-be is the best way to get them back into reality. - shreveyboy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+322All the currently 9 year old boys are going to be really pissed in a few years
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -13/+308The name 'Purity Balls' sounds like a celebration for a guy.
- satost, on 10/12/2007, -26/+295That gave me an extremely creepy sick feeling.
These girls will be the first in their class to lose their virginity, just to rid themselves of the sick feeling that their private parts are "daddy's property". - Tony611, on 10/12/2007, -23/+250"His two older daughters, aged 11 and 18, have attended the balls while the youngest, aged 4, must wait a few years. The three girls, along with their three brothers, are all home schooled."
Why does this not surprise me? - Azimuth1, on 10/12/2007, -15/+184I didn't mean to post this comment. My apologies.
- syedur, on 10/12/2007, -16/+138@Cam_86
Agreed. What strikes me though... these little kids do not know what they signing up for. They have no idea about sexual urges neither do they understand how good it feels. I bet as soon as they turn 13 and starts getting curious... they look back and think how stupid they were. - bcasper1, on 10/12/2007, -31/+150there just jealous of Jewish bar mitzvahs.
- MillionsLivio, on 10/12/2007, -10/+123I am home schooled and I'm an atheist. I do it online and you'd be surprised the level of education is much richer and efficient in this method. The public and private schools around here are horrid and there was a lot of wasted time because of that and the other students. I can do at my own pace and I love it; I’m attending college and I’m finishing up my last year of high school on the side (I did my 11th grade year over the summer). Do not generalize all people that are home schooled as blind religious zealots.
- unxpernced, on 10/12/2007, -12/+106Hehehe. "Purity Balls."
- squarehalo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+93this is absolutely awful, but for a funny discussion of the topic, download the latest "Real Time w/ Bill Maher". he has tackled this issue before, etc.:
"But that's not all -- taking the pledges also makes a teenage girl six times more likely to perform oral sex, and a boy four times more likely to get anal. Which leads me to an important question: where were these pledges when I was in high school?
Seriously, when I was a teenager, the only kids having anal intercourse were the ones who missed. My idea of lubrication was oiling my bike chain. If I had known I could have been getting porn star sex the same year I took Algebra II, simply by joining up with the Christian right, I'd have been so down with Jesus they would have had to pry me out of the pew."

- CurtHowland, on 10/12/2007, -13/+93Grouping all home-schoolers into one fundamentalist mass is insane.
Just as grouping all people under 18 into the same regimented environment for 12 years and expecting all of them to flourish, is insane.
People are different. Even if this guy didn't home-school, he'd still be a creep. There are a lot of home-schoolers who are doing so entirely because of the shortcomings of the public prison-camps, which have nothing to do with religion.
Except, maybe, rejecting the Religion of the Omnipotent State. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -37/+114UNNERVING "CHRISTIAN FAMILY VALUES"

No it won't, they'll just have sex. You think this will stop them? - Coniferous, on 10/12/2007, -10/+72Ugh, thats right, make them promise not to have sex before they even understand what a sexual urge even is.
Do they honestly think this will work? sure, it's fine for anyone to flaunt their lifestyle. but what's happening here? young kids, who have no concept of sexuality, or even what their beliefs will be in 10 years, are pledging to "stay pure until marriage". Not that it can't be done, it just doesn't seem right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43@ jrocknyc -
I was home educated and I completely agree. After 11 years I'm allright but I was a really screwed up kid. No social skills, no proper interaction, nothing. And yes I lost my virginity late and I definately did not go through the lengths I needed to for self protection.
@lisztman - You're kidding right? Apparently you haven't seen the midwest my friend. My mother decided when I was 14 years old that I would have an arranged marriage. Granted the chick was hot (mixed chinese) but the concept was completely insane. And every one of those people in the "homeschool group" planned on doing the same thing with their children. Sick bastards.
@CurtHowland & millionslivio - I have much respect for the people who aren't fundamentalists and home educate to provide a better education. Hug your mom for me millions and tell her the goat says thanks for doing things the right way.
Quick edit - FYI I rejected christianity 2 years after I left my home. Homeschooling for religion is a piss poor idea. - analogkid01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43Pointing out the incredibly creepy and psychologically damaging practices of a religion is not the same as hating the religion itself. I have no problem with Christians who understand that sex is a normal part of life, and that people are going to do it when they feel ready to do it, with whomever they feel comfortable doing it with. This, however, is just ***** up. Some parent holding a "purity ball" for his daughter does not affect me directly, but it affects my culture. His daughter may play with my daughter, and fill her head with wrong ideas about her sexuality, for example. I have every right to criticize someone else's beliefs, just as they have the right to criticize mine.

"President" Bush introduced Mike and Sharla Hintz, a couple from Clive, whom he said benefited from his tax plan.
Last year, because of the enhanced the child tax credit, they received an extra $1,600 in their tax refund, Bush said. With other tax cuts in the bill, they saved $2,800 on their income taxes.
They used the money to buy a wood-burning stove to more efficiently heat their home, made some home improvements and went on a vacation to Minnesota, the president said.
"Next year, maybe they'll want to come to Texas," Bush quipped.
Mike Hintz, a First Assembly of God youth pastor, said the tax cuts also gave him additional money to use for health care.
He said he supports Bush's values.
"The American people are starting to see what kind of leader President Bush is. People know where he stands," he said.
"Where we are in this world, with not just the war on terror, but with the war with our culture that's going on, I think we need a man that is going to be in the White House like President Bush, that's going to stand by what he believes.
and today...
A Des Moines youth pastor is charged with the sexual exploitation of a child.
KCCI learned that the married father of four recently turned himself in to Johnston police.
Rev. Mike Hintz was fired from the First Assembly of God Church, located at 2725 Merle Hay Road, on Oct. 30. Hintz was the youth pastor there for three years.
Police said he started an affair with a 17-year-old in the church youth group this spring. - Amusing, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Actually, promising when you are at such a young age is something I dealt with, and yeah, they think it works. - gndn47, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31I saw this yesterday, and I was MAJORLY freaked out. Some of the kids doing this are too young to even know what they're saying! I guess it's the same as how they try to get their kids to convert at the youngest age possible; so as to make sure that they always follow their teachings without ever thinking for themselves.
- aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32Some people don't home school because they want God in their education...some do it to keep god OUT!
If you lived in the South you would KNOW what I mean. Also corporal punishment where the principal takes your daughters pants down and spanks her with a large wooden paddle would make even die hard public school people think twice. No thanks. They can be as socially inept as you all claim...but no god and no paddle. - eigh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31omfg this is these are the best paragraphs of the entire article, its a shame they are at the bottom:
One study conducted by researchers at the universities of Columbia and Yale found that 88 percent of pledgers wind up having sex before marriage.
"Unfortunately these young people tend, once they start to have sex, to have more partners in a shorter period of time and to use contraception much less than their non-pledging peers," said Debra Hauser, executive vice president at Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based non-profit organization.
"Teens may pledge with the best of intention... and then as they break their pledges they are so shamed and embarrassed that it's unlikely they will go for help."
so all in all these purity balls are a sure fire way to get your daughter knocked up and in the middle of a brutal herpes/aids fight.
p.s. props for that guys 4 year old daughter knowing about sex and not wanting to have it until she is 35 o_0 - rushiku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Strange, no mention of Purity Balls for the lads. Call me crazy, but it seems that if both of the potential partners have pledged their sexual desires to the appropriate parent (eww) until after matrimony, there would be even less worry of evil sexual acts.
One flaw, of the many, in thinking that getting a child to agree to something they don't understand is that the adults assume that the matter is settled and no further discussion will be needed. No red faces and uncomfortable moments for Mommy and Daddy as they attempt to explain sexual urges, etc. Also, no knowledge of contraception and STDs for Cindy and Johnny.
Sounds like a win-win to me. If by winning I mean being forced to choose between abortion and living out a life with the sin-baby, and I do, I do.
Note to the nutjobs: Buy a chastity belt and lock that girl up, when it causes an infection, get the local snake charmer (priest, padre, whatever) to say a few incantations and wave a frog at it. Should clear it up, well, probably not. At the funeral, repeat these words of peace "God killed my daughter with my stupidity, God, why have you forsaken me?". We all know it wasn't *your* fault, oh no, it was god working in his mysterious ways. Odd that he always, always, always chooses stupid nutjobs, like yourself, to work his magic through, but I digress. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29My balls are always bouncing to the left and to the right.

- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21lisztman: Having sex is not "one of societies constraints", as much as you would like to believe otherwise. Having sex is a good thing, if done properly (i.e. safely). Teaching 10 years olds abstinence is utterly ridiculous. You know 10 year olds are "daddy's little girl" and will play along with it because they don't know any better. That's all going to change when they're 13 and horny however, then they just become Daddy's little teenage pregnancy statistic because they didn't have a ***** clue what a condom is and 13 year old boys love that.
- foamcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Are you sure that's the reason?
- G001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@gameboyhippo
I have no problem with people teaching abstinence. The problem I have is the "only" part in abstinence-only education. Some kids are going to have sex. It doesn't mean all are, but some definitely are, and we still have a responsibility to them. They need to know about contraception and STDs and so forth.
Saying we shouldn't be teaching them this stuff because they shouldn't be having sex to begin with is like saying kids should never hear a "don't drink and drive" message before they're legal because they shouldn't be drinking to begin with. They'd be right, but it ignores the reality that some are going to anyway. We still have a responsibility to say to them if you're going to do something stupid (drinking underage) don't do something dangerous (driving drunk.) Likewise, you can teach children how to avoid the greater evils of unwanted pregnancies and STDs without completely undermining the message of abstinence. It's the same thing: we don't want you to do this, but if you do don't do something even worse.
That very article said that 88% of the kids who took pledges ended up having sex before marriage anyway. Given that objective reality, whether you approve of it or not, it's important that they know about contraception and STDs. Don't drink before you're legal, but especially don't drink and drive. Don't have sex before marriage, but especially don't do it unsafely. - Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21What's next? Burkas? Anyone else notice the common obsession with a girl's virginity among religious fundamentalists? They're sick, sick people.
- mewho, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21What happens is that when they are away from the parents for the first time they go nuts. I know many girls who pledged chastity. And almost all of them got pregnant young, unmarried. They were too tempted by the unknown to say no, too ignorant to use birth control, and felt too guilty to ask advice.
For those of you blaming homeschooling--don't. It's as varied as the people who choose it. The sex ed in schools is far below anything I got as a home schooled child. Humans are programed to desire sex. Children should be taught to anticipate this urge and to learn how to deal with it and how to protect themselves.
On a related note, it is absurd that you have to be 18 to buy vibrators. A lot of pregnancies and sexual repression could be prevented if girls weren't taught to be ashamed of their sexual desires. -
