One of the recurrent elements of what he called the 'monomyth' - the story of the hero's journey that provides the basic framework for many of our myths and stories - is the mentor, often in the form of an old wise man, who gives the hero what he needs to accomplish his destiny. The authors of these stories are just reproducing this archetype (usually consciously).
