- sutro33, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36Having been to New Orleans recently, I think it can be added to this list.
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Married too, huh?
- ASSHO, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23New Jersey is the only place in the world where you can fart in your car, and your friends will thank you for it, "Ah, yeah, roll up the windows and keep it in... roll them windows up."

- bmcnitt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Detroit seems like a great investment opportunity. Anyone want to give up Silicon Valley and start a technology center in Detroit?

- klecu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I love that Detroit is on there. But it really does seem abandoned when you're there.
- skipp0023, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11OK, I'm getting to Verona, NJ if it kills me.
- thegreeneyedkri, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10that abandoned Russian Embassy is amazing.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Who was the smart guy who decided to pack 4-6 images into a 450x450 image?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just don't drive through Centralia, PA and you should make it alive.
- reuscel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Centralia is a really interesting place. I remember my father taking me there when I was really young. The soil was so polluted, you could actually punch a hole through one of the thousands of dead trees that pepper the landscape. This town would be the best place in the world in which to set a really creepy horror movie.
- jdominiczak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The Verona site is the also known as the Essex Mountain Sanatorium. All of the buildings have been demolished. The website http://www.mountainsanatorium.net/ has quite a few pictures of the large complex before it's demolition.
- thegreeneyedkri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4on the first list they did.
- SpyDerMann, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If you didn't know, Silent Hill was inspired by this town. http://www.offroaders.com/album/centralia/Silent-Hill.htm
- JohnnyBoy117, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Low res photos ftw!
- akatherder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Detroit has no business on that otherwise good list. It's been on the decline, but it is by no means abandoned or doomed. There's the renovated Renaissance Center, the new Riverwalk they just built, the two casinos, Greek Town, Compuware Building, and the two new stadiums where they just hosted the All Star game and Super Bowl. Are people pouring money into a lost cause?
The real estate costs and talent pool in Detroit is ripe for the picking. Once everyone gets over the automotive industry downturn, there are going to be a lot of rich people who invested when the "stock" was low.
I'm not saying Detroit is a tourist location or a place to vacation but it's ridiculous to think we're about to put up the quarantine sign and kick everyone out. - hellmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Detroit was once considered a really nice place before its decline and after the riots in the sixties. It was once considered the Paris of the West because of its great historic architecture. This is a neat website with tons of pics of the amazing architecture that has fallen to ruin. http://www.forgottendetroit.com/
- screwzluse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3These are some of the more interesting stories that end up hitting Digg. I love hearing the stories behind the pictures.
- aaron4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yeah, there are a lot of cool abandoned places in detroit. but in Flint, MI (about an hour and a half drive north of detriot) there are a lot of empty buildings thanks to the auto industry leaving, including several high rise towers.
- BrandonR717, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I live in the Detroit area as well, and while I do find all the abandoned buildings interesting, I would say Detroit is FAR from abandoned. If anything, it's making a great comeback, especially since the Superbowl was here.
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Digg and Duggmirror are not affiliated. Download the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox, then download this to add 6 mirror sites to every article. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9520
- thegreatgazoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's always Times Beach, Missouri (USA) that was abandoned in the 80s/90s due to dioxin tainted roads.
- gusevx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Detroit. Ha. It's not abandoned I went to raves all throughout the 90s there. Actually, I think a few of those buildings in the pictures had a few raves in them.
- quaxon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2youve obviously never smelled the fresh tijuana air.
- GreekMacedonian, on 10/20/2007, -1/+31974, Turkey invades 40% of the island of Cyprus which had a Greek population of 82%.
-8000 Greek-Cypriots killed
-1000+ Greek-Cypriot women between the ages of 12-71 are raped
-200,000 Greek-Cypriots ethnically cleansed from the occupied areas including Varosha.
-160,000 Turks from the mainland brought in as settlers to occupy Greek homes in the north in violation of the Geneva Conventions.
-40,000 Turkish troops still remain in the occupied ares.
-Greek graveyards desecrated.
-Greek churches either converted to mosques, used as stables, and even nightclubs.
-Ancient Greek ruins destroyed in an attempt to remove anything resembling the islands 3000+ year Greek history.
-Greece was unable to help due to the military dictatorship installed there by Henry Kissinger.
-Turkey used US made weapons to invade Cyprus, breaking the US law whereby American weapons are to be used for self defense only.
And remember Turkey still refuses to recognize its genocide against MILLIONS of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians from 1913-1923, which is like Germany refusing to recognize the holocaust.
Turkey continues to violate Greek and Greek-Cypriot airspace daily with military jets and reconnaissance aircraft, continues to threaten Cyprus with more war, and suppresses their large Kurdish population by trying to force assimilation upon them.
Global Campaign for Varosha, Cyprus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=putCsi3_ASc - Foreu2env, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1google just moved here so whatcha gotta say about that?
- mojo4126, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ya man you prob haven't been all around NJ....its not all that bad although you have a point...interesting
- mojo4126, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ya I live right by Verona and that place has been demolished recently i think someone even tried to burn it....the place is a one mile walk to get into since its all fenced up and then it has cops roaming all around it. Check out Weird NJ got more places
- iamabe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ryugyong is fascinating. that thing looks like it came from hell.
- SergeantSavage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Michigan is a great state to live in, detroit and flint are pretty much the only bad areas in the state. Ive lived here all my life.
- Pentoast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I totally took a weekend road trip there with some friends. It was really interesting to see all the smoke coming up from the ground and through the old road... we also pissed in the crack of the road.
- Xdannysterx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Gunkanjima, Japan seems the most interesting to go to.
- tgunner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Maybe North Jersey, but not down south here.
- elishagrey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah..it's not the fire but the being creepy and abandoned part that people (including the film's working title) have linked it to the two. It's actually kind of a boring place and used as a dump for old kitchen appliances in my experience. Oh and Pyramid Head totally roams the wastes at night.
- snapcase, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@ TheSabre (I hit the wrong damn reply button)
Yeah except for the coal fires and the picture of the church ontop of the hill surrounded by an eerie smoke.
The movie borrowed from Centralia as inspiration. It wasn't totally based on it. Research more. The screenwriter Roger Avary came across it in his research and borrowed from it. - ztaylor5273, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good thing nobody gives a ***** about that place anymore!
- AJEEPEELORI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Centralia is a pretty damn sad story, but a unique experience if you visit.
It was Eerie PA's cover story last issue- http://www.eeriepa.net - jalexhall1989, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've got checks on the Russian embassy..
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I live near Pilgrim institution that place is locally famous the pics you can get of pilgrim much better then NJ
- Slrarp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That place in Pennsylvania sounds a lot like Silent Hill...
- tiberone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"OK, I'm getting to Verona, NJ if it kills me."
yeah that was my first thought...turns out every last building there has been demolished :( - igbw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1entirely to few weapons or health packs laying about.
- YanSan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i lived in Detroit for this past year, and i just drove by Gary, Indiana a week ago. i love the look of old abandon buildings, plus i really love detroit architecture, so they mix well. even though i am leaving Detroit, i still like the place
- macgarp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dennis Archer saved Detroit. :)
- macgarp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1they are mostly in Ann Arbor.
- Lorddias, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anybody hear of Love Canal? I wonder why that's not on there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Canal - snapcase, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah Detroit sure has a lot of abandoned buildings that I'm sure have interesting insides, but I don't exactly feel like exploring and wind up walking into a crack house and getting shot.
It's cool too look at though... from a distance. -
