- jggube, on 08/30/2008, -0/+26I saw a special on this on Discovery channel - ever since then, I've wanted to visit Spain and try this out (and run with the bulls).
- Rizoh, on 08/30/2008, -1/+24Imagine if someone decided to hurl peppers instead of tomatoes.
- Jikul, on 08/30/2008, -0/+22I was there 2 years ago, and it was unforgettable. It's incredible fun, with loads of happy people throwing tomatoes. Made great friends, met people from around the world, simply beautiful. It's an absolute blood bath!
- topopardo, on 08/30/2008, -4/+23I'll reply honestly: the marginal cost for all those tomatoes is zero. Yes, the agricultural cost is null.
Furthermore, these food is possibly the leftovers from supermarkets, so it might not even be apt for human consumption. Would you pay the courier costs of a flight to Africa and then the trucks to deliver rotten tomatoes to small towns?
I'm also Spanish, but some things just don't make sense. It's once a year, it's a festival, just have fun!. A lot more of food is trashed every day on every city in the world. The "give it to poor people" is just plain demagoguery, sorry. - thegamingguy, on 08/30/2008, -3/+21This is epic, even compared to the fraternity wars we used to have in the cafeteria! Looks like a blast.
- upick, on 08/30/2008, -3/+19I'd love to check it out it looks like so much fun. Imagine how much tomatoes they would have to use!
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -0/+16They should somehow mix the two. Running of the overripe bull throwing.
- ahalbert, on 08/31/2008, -1/+152 people making out in the middle of a food fight. Talk about the perfect moment.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -2/+14Spain! Bulls, hot girls, food fights, hot girls, Good people, hot girls!! love it
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -2/+13Strangely, no one is quite certain how the festival started decades ago though theories abound as to its origins.
- Alaindrea, on 08/31/2008, -1/+12Is there ever not a perfect moment to make out?
- zohaibusman, on 08/30/2008, -1/+11quite interesting fight between boy and girl in the first picture ;)
really interesting way to have fun ........... - cougar618, on 08/31/2008, -0/+9"Biggest food fight" BS. There are bigger food fights in Africa.
- cffury13, on 08/31/2008, -1/+10"They clean the streets with a fire house"
Really? That's why I would go, to see that. - 32bytes, on 08/31/2008, -0/+6http://pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF182-Food_Fight.jpg
- ElGanyan, on 08/30/2008, -3/+8Reason number 1,527 I love Spain.
- ElGanyan, on 08/30/2008, -0/+4Although fights can break out, never have I ever experienced people with more of a desire to get into fights than when I've gone out with Americans (I'm American myself, living in Spain. Spaniards just don't seem to be as aggressive when drunk or otherwise). Something like this would certainly trigger brawls in the states.
Anyway, I went to La Tomatina a few years back and basically they stop it by cutting off the tomato supply. A number of trucks roll through the town dumping tomatoes in the crowd. Eventually there isn't much left to throw and the people start to dissipate. It's pretty crazy during that first hour though. - thevoiceless, on 08/31/2008, -0/+4Poor tomatoes...
- bobwrit, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4I wonder how they stop it. Or stop the spainards from beating each other up.
- warsongs7, on 08/31/2008, -1/+4You are right about this being only minimal food wastage compared to what happens throughout the world. The real question is why did the supermarkets buy so many tomatoes in the first place and not send them to Africa, Bangladesh or the Philippines.
- Spandia, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3It's so foreign, do they have a word for it in english?
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -0/+3I would bring my swimming goggles too. Perhaps even earplugs so tomato doesn't fester in there and cause an infection.
- pandaro, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2I think people are probably okay to compost.
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3I dont give a ***** about what anyone says but that is a huge waste.
I can name a hundred or more areas on the planet that could probably live off of tomato soup. - inactive, on 08/31/2008, -4/+6Not to ruin the fun, but come on! There's a ton of people out there who are starving for food! What a waste of food!
- StigNordas, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2I hope it ends up as one big compost heap, minus the people.
- Vuredel, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3how many*
- inactive, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1what a waste. I meant the people in the pic.
- 12916studios, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1Shut up, Helga!
- donna1234, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1So odd, and such a waste of food.
http://www.e-uuu.com - marcov, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1good god from the thumbnail it looks like massive bloody carnage
- Azathoth624, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1The only problem I encountered when I went last year was d'bags hurling sodden T-shirts at peoples' heads well after everything had finished.
Awesome time all round though, and we got to spend some time in Valencia which is a beautiful town I probably wouldn't have visited otherwise. HIGHLY recommended! - ChromaVita, on 08/31/2008, -2/+2The perfect balance of Love and War...
- sandraprinsloo1, on 02/17/2009, -0/+0After the tomatoes fly, release the bulls! Spain's a happening place.

- Waskonator, on 08/31/2008, -4/+4"Three tomatoes are walking down the street- a poppa tomato, a momma tomato, and a little baby tomato. Baby tomato starts lagging behind. Poppa tomato gets angry, goes over to the baby tomato, and smooshes him... and says "Catch up."
- skoolsux360, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1i guess the didn't get the memo about salmonella in tomatoes...
- inverselogic, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1Took me half a second to get that =p, touche sir
