- StinkyStench, on 10/12/2007, -53/+190Much like 85% of Mac users being sheep.
Sorry. Had to. - Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -6/+127waste of time until they create a manbearpig.
- EVogel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+119I was trying to tell everyone this before, ManBearPig is out there and we have to stop him nowww

you guys, I'm super serial this time! - CptCancer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+105To be fair, the other 15% are bad at math.
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+95To be clear, this technique doesn’t fuse any DNA .It doesn’t make some new species of Sheep-Man. The scientists claim there is no danger of that, and it seems correct.
Chimeras do actually occur in nature, although never as multiple species and it is still quite rare. It’s essentially a process where two original organisms (i.e., their original stem cells, each with distinct DNA) develop in the womb into one functioning whole, as opposed to conjoined twins or distinct siblings. Each set of cells retains its own DNA and lineage, but they cooperate as if they were one. One woman discovered her condition after she gave birth to children who did not share her DNA. Her reproductive cells (vs. the rest of her body) had originated from different a embryo that had combined with her and grown as one. She is not either one or the other. She is both.
Most of the cells in this sheep/human case are sheep cells. But some 15% off them are human. How the scientists ensure that the human cells turn into the desired organs is not clear. And the danger I see is what happens if the injected human cells turn into other tissue, say, relating to consciousness or reproduction? What if any of this makes the sheep smarter or more human-like in ways other than organ function?
Well, in the case of the reproductive organs, there’s no danger of conception unless some idiot sneaks in at night and has sex with the sheep (the child, if there was one, would be fully human). And if gestating human babies in sheep ever catches on, then we’ve really crossed the line. It’s less that the sheep would die in delivery and more that we would have become not only a predator, but a parasitic organism.
Now if the chimera’s nervous system is even partly human, then we have even more legal and ethical issues to resolve. Why wouldn’t this sheep have human rights? A human born with a deformity that makes him resemble a sheep (if there was such a thing) would still be human. And we’d never allow whole humans to be grown for the purpose of organ harvesting. At least I’d hope not.
So with these chimeras, where do we draw the line? Is 25%, 50%, 75% human enough? As a medical business, it would be optimal to grow as many human organs per donor animal as possible. The ultimate, for them, might be a whole human physiology, all internal organs, even a human face, and the brain of a sheep.
Meanwhile, the Christian Right spends its time saving Terri Schiavo… It makes me wonder if we’ve already perfected the technique. - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -9/+100108%?
- thealliedhacker, on 10/12/2007, -15/+94I, for one, welcome our 15% human, 85% sheep overlords.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8315% less shameful for lonely farmers.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/blacksheep/
(By the way, the beginning plot is THAT they make a new sheep that is part human.) - Beelzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Gives a new meaning to "sheeple".
- jamend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29FTA: "When the lamb is born, two months later, it would have a liver, heart, lungs and brain that are partly human and available for transplant."
Looks like they want to make replacement human brains too... though that doesn't seem very practical. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32Manbearsheep?
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27It's people sheep! Soylent Green is made from people sheep!
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I think a better word would be: eeeewwwwwwe.

- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Wait, Bush was right when he was mentions "Animal-Human" hybrids during his State of the Union speech a year or so back? Wow, I guess there is a first time for everything.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Soon we'll have chimeras walking around everywhere. Like in final fantasy...
- elcidcannon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I don't want to know where this is going....
- covertbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Right on. A few more generations of this, and my lamb chops will be able to grill themselves! Now if only someone can genetically modify mint sauce to leap from the fridge to my plate, we'll have reached gastronomic perfection.
- greenriver572, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10if the brain has some human cells, doesn't that mean the sheep would have some human thoughts?
- kuzotz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9we are our brains.... transplanting brains would mean to transplant consciousness.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So its only 85% bestiality?
- golhra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Bring rise to the homunculus on this side. Finally, I'll be able to use my alchemy skills to transmutate my brothers soul back to his orignal body.
Any FMA fans know where I can get a second philosopher's stone? Erm...maybe I don't want to know. - trevbork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My thought pattern when I opened this article: (marked in **):
1. Opening Digg *feeling optimistic* *maybe a cool article was posted*
2. *cool. new posts*
3. *let´s see here...* looking through new posts
4. (pressing down-arrow)
5. Linux MCE. *I read this if there is nothing else cool to read.*
6. Spiderman....*not in the mood. maybe tomorrow*
7. 15% Human, 85% Sheep *...*
8. (brain delay due to not realizing what I just read)
9. *Did I just see what I thought I...saw?*
10. *Yeah. I did.* Going back to click on it.
11. Opened site. *picture...show me a picture so I can see what a 15% human being looks like*
12. Closed site and opened comments section.
12.5 Realized that my personal stupidity level can now be shared 115% with that of a sheep.
13. Made this comment - airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A girl I used to work with was a chimera. I swear. She had two different colored eyes. (Actually, a symptom of chimerism.) And, she was the weirdest person I have ever known.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8By the way the plot of the film (i went to a media screening, read my review here: http://www.black-magic.co.nz/home/?p=428) is actually that they make a new species of sheep which is part human.
- DarkYang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh no! It's the beginning of the trollocs! I'll bet you that scientist, Esmail Zanjani, calls himself Aginor when he's alone!
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@airwalkery2k, How is that not a comedy? It's just like shawn of the dead
- raithetarkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I didn't bury you... not that that makes a difference really.
- trevorml0878, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This isn't a new finding. These things are called "Sheeple" and there are hundreds of millions of them in this country.
