With employees you pay insurance benefits, unemployment benefits, liability for the employee, liability for the work they are doing, overhead to cut them pay checks, overhead to manage and supervise, space for them to sit and work + their normal wage. With a consultant you are paying for them to take the liability in most cases and 300/hr to do the work.

Shortly after one of these memo's, shooting down our hopes, our VP of IT accidentally emailed the entire company letting them know about the rate we were paying a consulting firm for full-time support - $300.00/hour to do work that people had been terminated via a big lay-off just months prior...people that cumulatively did not make $300.00/hour.
