- djAnakin, on 12/12/2007, -2/+66Can I swim in it like Uncle Scrooge?
- strum40, on 12/12/2007, -5/+57It's about time New Yorkers got some cents and took the streets for change.
- 15thPD, on 12/12/2007, -0/+42This is very depressing. I've been thinking for half an hour, and I can't think of a single way to steal all of those pennies.
- Berkana, on 12/12/2007, -7/+47Sadly, if they stripped the copper and zinc out of those pennies and sold those as raw materials, they'd probably make more money. The penny is now worth less than the metals and labor that go into making it. Time to abolish the penny.
- bdub92, on 12/12/2007, -2/+33NO IT WILL NOT ***** BLEND ITS 100 MILLION PENNIES SO SHUT THE ***** UP
- RubberBand, on 12/12/2007, -0/+31They should try dollar bills next. They'd make more money.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -3/+32The saddest part about the story is that 20% of them won't ever know how many dollars that is
- MrWhite7, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2310 lucky children were then chosen to spend the remainder of their natural lives rolling them.
- DucoNihilum, on 12/12/2007, -4/+26I first read "100 million penises displayed in NYC"
then ".... hundrends of public school children on Monday...."
You can say I double taked. - orxor, on 12/12/2007, -2/+21Now melt them down and you can sell them for 2 million.
- uptown, on 12/12/2007, -1/+19If only it were 100 million Canadian pennies.......
(I miss the days when those were considered less worthy) - valcoramizer, on 12/12/2007, -1/+18Actually, the raw materials (no consideration of cost of extraction) are worth $566,328.971. Data: $1.08/lb zinc, $3.006/lb copper, 95% zinc, 5% copper, 2.5 g / penny
- Osirus1156, on 12/12/2007, -0/+17Why do websites make an image clickable if it only opens up a new page with the same size image?
- DeviantDragon, on 12/12/2007, -0/+15That'll get you a lot of thoughts.
- zachshmack, on 12/12/2007, -1/+14Might solve a mystery
Or rewrite history - arcooke, on 12/12/2007, -1/+14... and CoinStar earned $200,000 in fees.
- hambend, on 12/12/2007, -0/+11Hopefully this will gather some interest in the capital.
- savethemooses, on 12/12/2007, -0/+11Duck Tales! Ah-woo-oo!
- blazes816, on 12/12/2007, -2/+12I don't think you have to be that smart to know that 100 million pennies is 40 dollars.
- beathermit, on 12/12/2007, -1/+10... they then marched to the nearest coin star machine
- magicaltrevor, on 12/12/2007, -1/+10No.
- TenebrousX, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6...thereby abolishing the cent
- Procure, on 12/12/2007, -1/+7If I had a penny for every time...
- courtjester555, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5This is embarrassing, but I read "penises" in stead of "pennies." Don't ask me how.
- fugazi, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5I had an idea but it turned out to suck after I realized pennies are not that magnetic.
- protodon, on 12/12/2007, -2/+7I hate pennies. They take up way too much space, you need way too much of them to accomplish very little, and they make your hands smell. They're like the fat people of the monetary world!
- Chaoticfist, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6I know that this is very mean.....im almost hoping someone steals every penny.....just so i can read about it on digg and wonder how the ***** they did it.

"Since these cubes are mostly dense metal, their weight is impressive. One hundred million pennies weighs over 300 tons. For comparison, the largest living animal, the Blue Whale, weighs less than 150 tons as an adult." - Cl1mh4224rd, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4> ". . .but where the hell would you store that??"
In keeping with the theme: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ad/Mone ... - whymanwhy, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4The best part was all the great close up pictures!!
- phizz, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Video from ground level:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oWWcuF2CFI - masterspy7, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3But the cost of the process of separating the copper plating from the zinc would also outweigh the profits made from selling it...
- pixelguru, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3that's a lot of copper clad zinc!
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Just think if they were all ass pennies..
- aschmack, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3$1 million, and nobody is going to steal 100 million pennies. The standard weight of a penny is 2.5 grams, so that would be 250,000 kilograms or 551,155.655 pounds.
- cliffzdude, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4$40 Canadian...
- donkz, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4i like playing with my pennies
- theuber1337, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Um sir, I'm afraid you are mentally retarded. Not only is your math broked, but if you RTFA it would tell you "1 million dollars aka 100 million pennies."
You will notice that 100 million is not equal to one billion.
100,000,000 as opposed to 1000,000,000.
I tried to break that down so a first grader could understand, hope that was good enough. - underdog138, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3She also coined the display "Penny Harvest Field." How nice. The contribution will have mint a lot to these children in need.
- Devan612, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4You know who's smart? That Coin star guy. Just look at all that change he gets a percentage of. I do agree with discontinuing the penny though, just freaking round to the nickle already!!
- arcooke, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4Piggy bank, duh.
- subterfuge, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3the administration broke a law, i'd be worth as much as cheney's haliburton stock
- stephengotlost, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2That wouldn't smell too great.
- vincrap, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2okay so get this: i was there on sunday, and had no idea what the hell it was. i threw a penny in and got yelled at by security.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2then wouldn't that just result in the nickel being equal to one 'cent'? Instead of the base 10 system we have, it would become base 5. Nickel=1 unit dime=2 u Quarter=5 u Dollar=20 u etc.... It would not really solve the problem, I think it would just cause everyone to use a new system... and confuse everyone.
- FranksValli, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2It's ok, I read the same thing. And, as far as I know, I'm healthily heterosexual and sane. Maybe a bit tired, but still sane.
