When I asked him what was wrong, he told me they wouldn't play on the family pc. He was almost in tears... Imagine his face when he looked further into the box and found a DS Lite under the bubblewrap!

Sure a nick here and there, but it still is in working order, no screen scratches, and no "hanging by a wire". Contrary to your belief, Nintendo's products are very child proof. They are very well built.
