- Wiini, on 11/14/2007, -13/+97Did anyone even read the article?
They're removing MP3 and replacing it with AAC that is of higher quality at an equal file size.
It is not a DRM issue. While I don't know the actual motivation, this particular Digg is just a "shock factor" post, and the commentors above failed to even read the article... mainly because they're stupid. - dudeman88, on 11/14/2007, -3/+63Eh, I've used the Photo channel only a handful of times. Perhaps this is a sign that they are coming out with a proper "Jukebox Channel."
- getjustin, on 11/15/2007, -4/+32Wii had MP3 support?
- linuxrocks2007, on 11/14/2007, -10/+34And how many people bought the Wii for MP3 support?
- Wiini, on 11/14/2007, -3/+20You've got to be a moron to use the Photo Channel to play your MP3's. I mean seriously... I don't even know why this story exists.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -3/+19Shh, he's too proud of his comment
- Firehed, on 11/14/2007, -1/+16Doesn't matter. If they give you a feature (especially one described in the user manual), they have no right to take it away. It's one thing if future units ship without it, but actively removing it via a firmware update is thoroughly douchey, if not illegal.
- freakon, on 11/14/2007, -7/+19Uhhh, you just posted that comment here: http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Nintendo_AAC_To_Repla ...
- iofthestorm, on 11/14/2007, -1/+13Still, I don't understand why they have to swap. Can't they just keep both, and perhaps make a music channel eventually?
- sauvaget, on 11/14/2007, -0/+9i wouldnt worry about that. the mp3 playback in excitetruck etc. is probably built directly into the game itself.
i hope so anywy. - MasteRR, on 11/14/2007, -2/+11No one said anything about DRM. The proposed problem was licensing. This makes sense to me seeing as MP3 is known to be encumbered by patents, where as AAC is generally considered and open standard. (They could have just as easily gone with OGG/Vorbis, but meh).
- Guspaz, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8They're replacing MP3 (MPEG-1 audio) with AAC (MPEG-4 audio). This is a *GOOD* thing. This is by no means a downgrade, it's an upgrade.
I understand why they're removing MP3. Both MP3 and AAC require licensing fees. They've apparently decided that rather than paying the fees for both MP3 and AAC, they're just going to keep on paying one set of fees, and replace the format support. - DeviantDragon, on 11/14/2007, -4/+12Could somebody clarify to me whether this means there is no MP3 playback on the photo channel only or if this means that games like Excite Truck won't be able to integrate MP3s either, ie: a complete and total removal of MP3 playback.
- aksn1p3r, on 11/14/2007, -27/+35It is bad protocol to implement and then revert. Nintendo should get sued on that, unless they specifically informed or stated in writing at the time of purchase or within their disclaimers, that the MP3's format was subject to exclusion in the future. Else, you must go get a refund and bury Wii sales!
- MasteRR, on 11/14/2007, -1/+9This is why licensing issues is suspect. Nothing keeps them from using both, except money.
- fezzler, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8Shucks, now what will I play my music on? Oh wait, I just found my box of a billion other devices that are ten thousand times more practical for playing music.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -2/+10This isn't such a bad thing. I rarely use the photo channel, and would never consider using it for MP3 playback.
Now here's a better idea: allow the wii to stream media (at least mp3) from PC's and macs. Perhaps a java application or something for the greatest compatibility. - Wiini, on 11/14/2007, -7/+13One more thing... anyone who thinks the "no control over what you're playing" photo channel was a good method for playing music in the first place... well, you're just stupid.
- icsbase, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Downgraded? AAC is a child of MP3, an advanced format which makes better audio files with smaller filesize especially under 192 kbit/s rate. Both od these have been developed by the same company and AAC is widely used by Apple in their products, Sony in their Playstation 3 and now Nintendo on Wii. So how is this downgrade? I Admit, why can't they just keep MP3 on the side? Buried as inaccurate. Who actually uses their own music on photo channel anyway?
- stevey5036, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Who uses the photo channel anyway? Not really a big deal.
- Wiini, on 11/14/2007, -10/+16... Did you read the article? People who previously owned the Wii (you know, the ones that show MP3 Logos on the box) can continue to have Mp3 support by having the older version of the Photo Channel. The article spells out that you can remain MP3 compatible.
People who buy after the update, their boxes won't show MP3, and they won't have the functionality.
Please stop using Digg to spread your shock-factor propoganda. - Wiini, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8Didn't know which Digg was going to take off. I hate you.
- ryanadc, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6It IS an optional update...you technically don't ever have to update anything on the Wii, ever. I've got a Wii and quite frankly, I think the photo channel is kinda lame, and without in-game support for the media files, I frankly don't really care.
- Matt2k, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8I guess they probably had to pay a fee for every licensed MP3 player, and they got tired of doing so. I mean, I never used my Wii to play MP3s. I didn't even know it could.
- Flamekebab, on 11/14/2007, -2/+8Uh, yeah it does make sense.
You can play flash videos on it at the moment, but the maximum res you're likely to get in flash videos is far less than the total resolution of the system.
High res != HD - Username314, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5Kill him!! He complemented the guy we dugg down.
- MasteRR, on 11/14/2007, -2/+7Licensing issue? Probably. It's not a technical reason most likely otherwise they could have added AAC and left MP3 support in.
- nakile, on 11/14/2007, -1/+6Looking at the submitters profile shows that he seems to be a Playstation supporter. Is this all he can resort to to make Nintendo look bad?
- NeverReturnKid, on 11/15/2007, -2/+7So how does this effect games like ExciteTruck where you can make your own soundtrack?
- TigerClaw, on 11/14/2007, -2/+7They probably removed it over licensing issues. Companies have to pay the license to use the mp3 codec in there players.
- Nexus85, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5I only got AAC files, so I'm pretty happy with this
- starf, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5If you do not install the update to the photo channel that supports mp4, then you will retain mp3 support. This is not a system update, it is a photo channel specific update, so it will not affect game compatibility. And they warn with the update that mp3 compatibility will be lost.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Actually this week I've been using the free winamp remote program on my pc to access my music on the opera web browser on the wii and it works great. Excellent app to access and play your mp3s saved on your home pc from elsewhere as well (saves space on your work hd too if you happen to have a deskjob) access it anywhere with a web browser. Pretty simple program too, make a username and password, choose which folders to add and you're good to go.

- zengonzo, on 11/14/2007, -2/+5'they hyped it [I seem to remember them mentioning this at e3 during one of there press conferences]'
I don't think that word means what you think it means. - MasterChi, on 11/14/2007, -3/+6AAC at a higher quality is all fine but all my music is MP3 so now i have to go through the trouble of converting it so i can play it with the slideshows now. Like the comment above....why can't they keep both?
- saegiru, on 11/14/2007, -2/+5Who would ever want to use the Wii to play ANY type of music? I don't quite understand. Maybe (and this is definitely a maybe) if I were streaming them from a network source... but who would go through the effort of saving them to an SD card specifically to listen to on the Wii? Holy crap... who cares?
- Shanobi, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3"If I want to hear MP3's, I'll listen on my computer. Nintendo make a lot of really bad decisions sometimes."
So if you don't care, then why is it a bad decision for them to upgrade to mp4's?
Way to contradict your own arguement. - mabhatter, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I'd assume after millions of units they'd already paid.. so why take it out?
- cigawoot, on 11/14/2007, -4/+7Buried for the fact that AAC is better then MP3. Plus being able to skin your Wii Menu with Photo Channel images will rock your world.
- bigdaddyguido, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Just because you own all microsoft products which shun the much more advanced AAC format due to the fact they feel that WMV is just so valuable doesn't mean nothing plays AAC. Your complaint should be taken up with MS who supports a full fledged media player which is incompatible with a universal format, not with nintendo for not wanting to pay a huge liscensing fee for a feature which is currently used in just one of the side projects released for their system.
- smoger, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2you can't maintain the current version. even if you avoid downloading the wii system updates, every 1st party nintendo game includes, and forces, whatever system update was current at the time of pressing for that game...unless you already have an equal or greater version, of course.
- JudgeMonkey, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2custom psp firmware is GREAT, but if you have official firmware, I can think of no instance where updating it "crippled" it.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2You need to keep looking....
- Username314, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Times like these I just Digg 'em all down.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2The big issue I have with converting a lossy format to another lossy format is there WILL be quality loss
- Shanobi, on 11/14/2007, -2/+4Wow. So your panties are bunched up because now it plays AAC and MP4 files. If you really want MP3's on the Wii photo channel, the odds are users are bright enough to convert them to the other formt.
OOOOOOOH SCARY! - PJBovoNox, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2It's 'their'. Ok?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2No arguments with that point here
- mCanada, on 11/14/2007, -1/+3Apples and oranges. You're talking about product revisions between models. This is a downward revision on the very same model, on the very same unit you may have. Now the distinction may become muddy given that it's software we're talking about (software is revised consistantly and is never "finished") but it's the same concept, you don't sell something to a consumer and then go into their product (toaster, freezer, car, Wii) and remove it. It's shady.
