- NeedlerFanPudge, on 10/27/2008, -2/+51Sony already tried to stop ***** like this with the PSP. It's an unnecessary drain on funds, and Nintendo would be wise to just say they gave it the old college try and let the hackers do what they do best.
- rand21althor, on 10/27/2008, -1/+32It's a race between Nintendo and the Homebrewers: Nintendo puts out a patch for the Homebrew, and a new version of Homebrew is released.
I'm glad for this update, though. - dudeman88, on 10/27/2008, -1/+22Wii homebrew was really a lifesaver for me. After purchasing a couple of virtual console games, my Wii wouldn't download them. When I tried to update my firmware, it kept giving me a Wii Error 32002 (something that is still unsolvable in some cases). After I setup my Wii for homebrew, I can now play games I tried to download, plus games that will most likely never see the light of day in the virtual console. Plus, Quake and DVD playback is awesome.
- tanameyer, on 10/27/2008, -0/+16So if the hackers can enable 4GB and 8GB SD Cards then why hasn't Nintendo included this from the start? Or at least as an update? Damnit, Nintendo frustrates me to no end sometimes! I would have bought a 4 GB or 8GB card if I knew that the functionality was built into the hardware and Nintendo simply chose to limit it with a software limiter.
- Raptor007, on 10/27/2008, -0/+16This is great news; homebrew should not be blocked!
On the other hand, I'm not gonna bother. My modded Xbox 1 has all the homebrew console goodness I could ask for (and supports 720p/1080i as well). - Linh, on 10/27/2008, -0/+15So now we know SDHC will work w/ the hardware... is this what Nintendo plans to do when they enable the DLC update this spring or whenever?
- horsepie, on 10/27/2008, -0/+12Didn't Nintendo say they wanted to encourage small developers on the Wii? Preventing piracy I can somewhat understand. But it looks like they were just talking out of their ass and meant only those "small" developers who pay the license fees.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/27/2008, -4/+15Sure...what's your friend code? Mines 12D8-3E9A-AJ73-F923
Now remember you have to give me yours as well, and we both have to have each other entered before we can play. Then we have to hope that the matchmaking successfully pairs us. Online on Wii is a joke. - MikeMania, on 10/27/2008, -0/+9Yea, you just need it once for installation.
- rezendes, on 10/27/2008, -2/+11this is inaccurate because you are no longer able to install wads/virtual console/wiiware/homebrew/softmods on the wii if you have updated to the latest wii firmware... so Homebrew is NOT open like the title says... however a new exploit was found by the homebrew channel team that allows wad installation again... however they have not revealed it as of yet.
- timbellomo, on 10/27/2008, -1/+10Actually, the timeline shows that they moved to close the Twilight Princess exploit before VC/burned piracy began.
- ktervalon, on 10/27/2008, -1/+10WOOT!!!! I was so playing the crap out of Super Mario Bros 3 all weekend on my Wii!!
- herrferret, on 10/27/2008, -1/+9Dugg for taste :D
- robmaunder, on 10/27/2008, -0/+8Renting it would be fine,
- marcus1060, on 10/27/2008, -1/+9Nintendo didn't really do anything to stop it till they started using it to play pirated VC games and burned games.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+9Well if they impose an artificial limit they can later sell you the "upgrade patch".
- Langford, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7It all goes back to attracting 3rd party developers.
- iofthestorm, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6No, you just need it for about a minute when installing the Homebrew Channel, afterward you never need it again.
- tavisjohn, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6You can't afford $9 for a 4gig card?
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results. ...
Or $15 for an 8 gig card?
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results. ... - jmkiii, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6May be time to try this
- Me0wmix, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6My friend code is XxMetalGearxX oh wait isn't this PSN?
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+7Who wants to play SSBB online with me? I'd kick your ass with DK
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Nintendo doesn't appear to actually want to deturret the homebrew scene. However, for legal purposes they must attempt to show and document security patches. Kind of like if you leave your door open and someone walks in then it isn't breaking and entering, they are allowed to lawfully walk around, sit down and do anything else that isn't a crime... but that isn't exactly a good idea though, espcially if you want to make an insurance claim.
This was revealed by one of the hackers on thedailywtf.com. He pointed out that the encryption method made no sense and wasn't preventing anything after some basic dissasembly. - hartley, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5sdhc will work with any sd compliant hardware. the sdhc support is always added via software/firmware.
my laptops built in card reader,
my very old treo 650,
my wii,
all have sdhc support thanks to software/firmware updates. - mrsteveman1, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6This isn't really about stopping hackers (unless they consider running code that Nintendo didn't get royalties for to be a big concern). In reality this is probably just another facet of the piracy bitchfight. They want to maintain the platform in such a state that only code they allow will run, so that pirated games won't. It's the same thing a lot of these platforms do right now, i think its also a big reason why the iPhone is as locked as it is (jailed, code signing).
- somestranger26, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Lib OGC you say?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5You know what? I sold my Wii and got a 360 but I still think it's awesome what these homebrew developers are accomplishing. Dugg! (not your comment)
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+6My tag is xMasterchiefx204818x4518x91058x oh wait this isn't XBL?
- rainbowjinjo, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Just curious here,
I don't have Twilight Princess, but I would be willing to rent it to hack the Wii. Would I need the TP disc after I originally installed the homebrew network, or is renting it fine? - hartley, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4same here, but i'm looking for an adequate replacement so i can turn those old xbox's into nas servers.
- dupajuda, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4sucks that elf files dont work
- mrsteveman1, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Yep.
- tavisjohn, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4I doubt it.
- boombume, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4^^^ Yes, in emulated games like NES, SNES, Genesis, etc it supports 720/1080.
Even XBMC supports it in video out.. and btw, Xbox Media Center is the greatest homebrew application of all time, EVER. - hartley, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4elf files will come back in the next version, for now you can convert your own to dols.
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/27/2008, -1/+5It's probably just an attempt to cut back on returns on bricked systems.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5Give me your AIM instead so I can let you know when I am online
- Me0wmix, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Haven't been on my Wii lately (collecting dust) I have the homebrew channel, and am hoping to try this.
- bradcrc, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3quake really kicks ass on wii with the blaster. It's a whole different game.
I'm waiting anxiously for multiplayer. :) - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4I personally have my 360 flashed but XBLA piracy is a way aways. The kernel is pretty complicated but hackers find a way, eventually.
- hartley, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3The sdhc support is included in the libogc.
As long as the program is open source, you can clean and then make and have sdhc support on any program. *of course you need the latest libogc* - Linguo, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5Thank god. I wish they would do something like Xbox live arcade. Those games are awesome.
- Darkangel754, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3You should buy it, great game.
- Elranzer, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3Get a job, afford both?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Take a few seconds to remember "The Wizard" =)
Like anybody would know how to get the first whistle on their first time playing the game.... I guess if you are a super curious bastard and a wizard it's possible. - Andrwmorph, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Its the same way with the PSP
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2This is news to me, I wasn't aware a modded Xbox can handle HD resolutions. Is this a recent thing?
- Elranzer, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Dupajuda must have been thinking of the overpriced Sony MemorySticks.
- Shadic, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2I totally support all DK players. Talk about an under-supported character.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2And those are just regular prices, find a sale (I recommend www.slickdeals.net) and every few days one pops up. I got an 8 gig SDHC from newegg for $9.99 shipped a couple weeks ago.
