- kuchino, on 11/30/2007, -4/+87"To increase supply Nintendo would need to invest in a whole new facility, something it is unwilling to do. " the reason they are unwilling is if they do build one, after the rush is over and the wii sale crusade dies down. they will start losing money on the extra facilities built just to add a supply to the current demand.
- spaceninja, on 11/30/2007, -2/+47If people would quit buying them on ebay there would be a few more on the shelves. Gamestop here in town have quit selling to about 15 people. It was a family that would come in and buy all the Wii's just to toss them on Ebay.
- felman87, on 11/30/2007, -3/+40There sure are a lot of wiis on ebay
- benmakesmovies, on 11/30/2007, -11/+43Excellent article. For the past year Nintendo has been selling every system they put on store shelves. They have every incentive to ramp up production to meet the high demand... unless they hate money or something.
- xTRUMANx, on 11/30/2007, -1/+33Wow. What are you, youngest digg user ever? Can't go from picture books to articles too quickly, you need to take baby steps.
- kooft, on 11/30/2007, -2/+28The proper phrase is: "pics, or it didn't happen".
- roosterjm2k2, on 11/30/2007, -1/+21The workings of being an *****... and thats really how the world works...
legal, legitmate, of course, but its an ***** thing to do...at what point do you say "how many kids wont get what they want because i want to make a few $$" - digid, on 11/30/2007, -1/+19They bundle wiiplay(9 mini games) because then they get away by being able to say "WII + 14 GAMES" as their teaser. Deceptive. Throw in a nunchuck and they can advertise "WII + 14 Games + 4 Controllers"
For those that can't count:
5 sports games with wii
9 wii play mini games
1 nunchuck CONTROLLER w/system
1 wiimote CONTROLLER w/system
1 wiimote CONTROLLER w/wiiplay
1 nunchuck CONTROLLER added - STKD, on 11/30/2007, -5/+21You mean like: Wii Sports, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, MySims, Excite Truck, Super Paper Mario, Zelda Twilight Princess, Trauma Center, Endless Ocean, Zack and Wiki, Mario Galaxy? I mean I could go on... after just short of a year on sale, that's pretty damn decent.
- GreenGrassyNoel, on 11/30/2007, -3/+19What bothers me about people complaining about this shortage is that they havn't thought about how fast they are making these! Since launch they have sold over a million a month, lets call it a million for convenience. That is over 23 Wiis every MINUTE for over a year straight.
- john2kx, on 11/30/2007, -1/+16a couple of those games are a stretch, but MP3, RE4, Paper Mario, Zelda, Zack & Wiki, Mario Galaxy, and Trauma Center are all really good.
- Treshnell, on 11/30/2007, -0/+15I really enjoyed how most of the auctions on ebay for the Wii are listed as coming with 5 games. AKA "Wii Sports."
- KingGoonie, on 11/30/2007, -0/+14I was tracking ebay after someone said they were going for 600... I saw the most idiotic thing. A system with wiiplay and an extra nunchuck went for $650. A standalone system went for $450. Now, correct me if I'm wrong... but wiiplay and nunchucks are readily available... so why the hell would you spend another $200 bucks to get that package instead of the extra $70 it would take to get one in store?
To be fair I check back the next day and it seems people realized that. The standalone wii's were selling for a little higher... almost 500... but the ones with wiiplay and nunchuck were selling for lower... like 590. - Shawn4168, on 11/30/2007, -2/+16Because it would still take a significant amount of time and money to adapt that facility to make the Wiis.
- underthewether, on 11/30/2007, -1/+15For such a big "shortage", they are still selling more than Xbox or PS3. If they couldn't match their competition I'd say they had a problem, otherwise they're fine.
- steelclash84, on 11/30/2007, -1/+14It's pretty obvious they're at maximum production capacity. Not only do they have high demand for the Wii, but they have astronomical demand for the DS (especially in japan). Two products that require vastly different components and construction being produced by the same company, I don't see how anyone believed it was an artificial shortage.
- clickwir, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11Same reason the price is exactly the same for every console, everywhere you go. Contract.
If you want to sell a Wii (Xbox or PS3) you have to abide by their contract rules. And those rules include exactly what you are allowed to sell it for. - ChineseRoom, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11Man I love Nintendo, say what you want about the company but they know how to make a ***** of money.
- sgglynn, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12"They have every incentive to ramp up production to meet the high demand... unless they hate money or something." That's not really consistent with what the article is saying... Unless they know that building a new facility will be operating at 100% capacity in the long run, they don't have the incentive to build a new production firm. Currently, each facility is at full production capacity, which is where a business wants to be.
- vanza001, on 11/30/2007, -1/+11The lack of supply is their fault, technically, yes. But they are not creating a shortage by reducing output. They simply realize (correctly) that increasing supply would not be best for the bottom line. We live in a world run on money. Money decides our foreign policy, who lives and who dies and yes, even how many Wii consoles are available.
- KingGoonie, on 11/30/2007, -3/+12Maybe because that added rushed facility will make them crappy lol... sort of like how a game company turns over production of a franchise to another team and it might totally suck.
- vanza001, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Also it is not merely Nintendo's manufacturers that may be lagging. The manufacturers of the components (accelerometers, plastic housing, etc, etc.) may not be able to increase output and it certainly is not cost feasible to build new factories for each of those. Sorry kiddies, you shoulda camped out like me last X-mas.
- Shawn4168, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10What kind of store opens at 10pm?
- aurorous, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Unfortunately your "facts" don't match reality. The drop in sales in japan had corresponding jump in sales in North America by just about the same number. At this moment Sony isn't much of a threat. The PS3 would have to sell 200,000 a month for the next year just to catch up in japan, and they're even farther behind in the other markets. Everyone agrees the Xbox isn't going to do anything in japan. Nintendo is diverting supply from japan and piling as many Wii's into the North American market as they can cram right now. The Wii has outsold the Xbox worldwide but the Xbox still has a 2million unit lead in America If they can close that gap it guarantees the Wii will be the number #1 world wide and also guarantees better 3rd party support which is the Wii's only real weakness.
Once demand in America has been filled Nintendo can flood Japan with Wii's at their leisure. They'll still be the market leader in Japan this time next year and they know this. Beating the Xbox on it's home turf will do a lot more for them. - Azuroth, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Really, because I know three people that have been looking for a month. Post the location of this mythical land of surplus Wii's, and they will disappear.
AKA, "Location, or it didn't happen" - KezG, on 11/30/2007, -4/+12Still, some retailers are holding back stock.
Play.com have had Wii's in for over two weeks now, and until a few days ago didn't sell one. (someone figured out how to mess with the URL to add one to cart despite there being no 'buy' button; about 100 people managed to get one!) They have since fixed this bug.... But it shows that they were clearly holding back stock! - cawfee, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9Quality control. It would nearly take the same amount of money to properly outfit a facility for assembling or producing all the components necessary in the same quality as those from specifically built factories. Something's bound to go wrong with that, and a slew of recalls will cost Nintendo more money than not making these systems in the first place.
- libertao, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7That's when the nightclub section of Best Buy opens.
- qualish, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Diabolical!
- ferrariman60, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Thank you for putting that little but of economic common sense in here. Lots of people seem to think that opening new factories is super easy, but they don't think of what happens after demand for the product you built the facility for dies down- guess what? You've got a multi-million dollar building that isn't doing anything. Glad this article is around too, and quite frankly, anyone who doesn't see the logic is simply ignoring basic economics. It'd be good if people had at least a basic understanding.
- dudefather, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7its hard to believe that a few years ago they had to shut down gamecube production for a while to get rid of the stockpiles
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Must be nice making profit off hardware AND software. Rather than losing money on hardware in the short term in hopes of making profits off software in the long run.
- soundsofreason, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7You mean 2 years after the 360 launch, right? It is VERY impressive.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Sell it then, people want it.
- vanza001, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7Name decent games to play on PS3 and I'll name that many on the Wii + 10 more for good measure.
- frygar, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6One year later and they're still impossible to find. One year AFTER the launch of the 360, and they've already kicked MS' console to the curb. Good show, Nintendo, good show.
- ibeetle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6It is easy to get a bid for $600...
A lot harder to actually get the $600 - GreenGrassyNoel, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Source?
- Jus2Gud, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Did you miss the /sarcasm tag or do you purposely want to get buried into oblivion?
- Bridea, on 11/30/2007, -2/+8Casey Ayers, you need a new picture.
- deadnoob, on 11/30/2007, -5/+11The only Wii shortage that exists is your penis.
- Ashkc88, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6I think Best Buy just tells you when they restock on everything, Nintendo has always been random when it comes to shipping stuff. They do this purposely and I believe their reason for doing so is that they had a problem with people stealing their merchandise. At least that's what I've been told by several people.
- Mrstupid7, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5When I talked to the people at the Kmart I got my Wii from they told me they got a shipment in every Wednesday, so next Wednesday I went in and got a Wii.
It also helped a ***** that nobody shops at K Mart except really old people. - EtherGnat, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5More likely that Dad just decides to buy the Xbox 360 that was conveniently sitting on the store shelf instead, and tells little Johnny to deal with it.
- sqwidget, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6The part that people forget when complaining about the Wii is that Nintendo has 2 massively popular systems. They have been pumping out over 2 million consoles a month for over a year now when you add the DS into the equation. If Sony or Microsoft were pushing that many units out the door a month then it might be an issue, but the fact that Nintendo has been crushing both makes it a moot point.
- frygar, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5You're right, I meant to say the Wii launched a year after MS launched their console, but eclipsing a console by a million plus units while having been out for only half the time is damn impressive. Go Nintendo!
- GvnMcCld, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure Nintendo allows that, I haven't personally seen major retailers selling for more than MSRP on the system. I would think if they could, Best Buy would.
- fanclerks, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Because they are required to sell them at a certain price point by Nintendo. The packages they can get away with because it's a combo deal.
- theragu40, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5I didn't realize he was asking for a 403 error.
- nicko68, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7I agree with rooster and space completely, I think it's a disgusting practice and completely takes advantage of people. But it fits in so nicely with society's "Everyone for himself" attitude.
