The SNES is the greatest console of all time
blogs.cnet.com — While the decision was a difficult one, it seemed almost too simple I declare the SNES the greatest console of all time.

- john2kx, on 01/26/2008, -5/+20... the *****? I mean, that wasn't a bad game by any means, but of all the obscure games, that one?
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -0/+6It also had Brain Lord
- BirdCatcher, on 01/26/2008, -0/+6Only cause it had Plok

- honeymustardn, on 01/26/2008, -2/+11EarthBound.
- ehal256, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0Earthbound isn't really that obscure :/ at least not these days..
- bot001220, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Don't forget Metal Warrior!
- rpgmaker, on 01/26/2008, -7/+1It was a great console and was the one that convince Sony to take a stake of the videogames console market. When the SNES came out there wasn't real competition to Nintendo...
- boombye, on 01/26/2008, -1/+9Sega
- kaykfrink, on 01/26/2008, -1/+7Yea man, the Genesis was Sega's peak. In fact, we haven't really witnessed a console war that was as close as the SNES vs. Genesis war of the early 90s.
Also, it wasn't the SNES directly that caused Sony to get into the game business, it was Nintendo screwing them over during the development of the SNES Disk Drive. So on all accounts you fail.
- random19, on 01/26/2008, -0/+11Secret of Mana. Chrono Trigger. Link to the Past. Star Ocean. Street Fighter II. Turtles in Time. Super Mario World. Mario Kart.
I could go on...- WernerCD, on 01/26/2008, -3/+0http://www.digg.com/nintendo/Top_25_SNES_Games
Why reinvent the wheel? (Although that list is fishy without Earthbound on there somewhere.)- Elranzer, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3You act like one blogger's (poor) opinion speaks for everyone.

- spyrochaete, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1I'm with you, TwoXist. That game rules. Carnival FTW.
- atron3030, on 01/26/2008, -13/+150This article is poorly argued. However, I must agree with his statement, seeing as how Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time.
- krabat, on 01/26/2008, -3/+20Correct.

- Dylson, on 01/26/2008, -4/+3Correct.
- volacide, on 01/26/2008, -15/+5Don't lie. You just found out about that game today, from that other SNES digg article.
- drgmdp, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3i know i did
- Dylson, on 01/26/2008, -12/+4I agree. It is a poorly argued article. It is, in fact, a big crock of *****.
- smacksaw, on 01/26/2008, -20/+5It's not poorly argued, it's fatally flawed. All of the consoles he got out are post-1985
The BEST console, hands-down (as I have owned them all) is the ColecoVision. It had a joystick, a multi-button controller and peripherals like a trackball, super controller with a dial for Frontline and a racing wheel. It could natively play both Atari and Intellivision games with a simple add-on.
It was the first system to bring arcade games to the home that actually was faithful to arcade games. Many of the best games for C64 and Apple like Temple of Apshai were not possible on Atari/Intellivision, but found new life on Coleco.
The hardware was powerful, the system was durable, the controllers lasted, it was affordable. Even after we had NES and SMS, my friends and I still played Coleco for years. It was quite simply perfect and for him to leave it out shows he's too young to write an article like this.- evil-doer, on 01/26/2008, -5/+43"It could natively play both Atari and Intellivision games with a simple add-on."
natively... with an addon.. you ***** fail.- smacksaw, on 01/26/2008, -15/+1No *****, it was designed for that as the expansion was built-in for that purpose.
As opposed to the Intellivision that was not meant for Atari and voice and had a crappier/more expensive workaround addon, or the 2600 that had that ***** tape drive add-on.
You=FAIL x2- WernerCD, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1Considering both of your comments are in the negative... I think it is you sir who Failx2... although that might be an understatement.
- smacksaw, on 01/26/2008, -15/+1No *****, it was designed for that as the expansion was built-in for that purpose.
- evil-doer, on 01/26/2008, -5/+43"It could natively play both Atari and Intellivision games with a simple add-on."
- justinjacobs, on 01/26/2008, -3/+22I love how any time the SNES is brought up, people are like "OMG CHRONO TRIGGER." Sure, it was a great game, but there were other great games. A lot of people tend to forget about Enix, that little RPG making company that was good before Square swallowed them up. I suggest you take a look at games like Act Raiser, Illusion of Gaia and Brainlord.
- Brad324, on 01/26/2008, -17/+6moar like ***** raiser, illusion of gaya and brainlard, m i rite? OMG CHRONO TRIGGER.
- eridius, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Never heard of Brainlord, but Act Raiser and Illusion of Gaia are both great games. However, Chrono Trigger and FFVI are still the best RPGs of any platform.
- SuperMoses, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) I-IV on the NES! You get to play as Taloon the merchant in DW IV! Tell me that's not amazing. You play as a freakin' merchant! Not to mention the casinos and betting on monster fights.
- Elranzer, on 01/26/2008, -0/+8"A lot of people tend to forget about Enix, that little RPG making company that was good before Square swallowed them up."
I hate to break this to you, but it was Enix who swallowed Square up.
Enix has always been bigger than Square, especially in Japan, due to the Dragon Quest series. Square lost so much money due to the failure that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, that Enix was able to absorb them. - scoffey, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Super Mario RPG? Yes please.
- Brad324, on 01/26/2008, -17/+6moar like ***** raiser, illusion of gaya and brainlard, m i rite? OMG CHRONO TRIGGER.
- dn11, on 01/26/2008, -0/+28doesn't matter, you can digg it simply for the title - because it is totally accurate. chrono trigger? sure, but how about A Link to the Past, Mario Cart, FF 2-3, Act Raiser, Mario World etc etc etc

- jedikv, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1after you played mario kart?
- Nekiruhs, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7Secret of Mana? I'm amazed that hasn't been mentioned yet. That was my favorite SNES game of all time!

- quomen, on 01/26/2008, -2/+10I loved my Genesis for one game.. Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Brad324, on 01/26/2008, -0/+6for me it was Herzog Zwei. That game is still fun today.
- rpgmaker, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3It is, I have it on my mobile :)
- TheHappyRobot, on 01/26/2008, -9/+6The what?
...Oh the Megadrive. - kyouteki, on 01/26/2008, -0/+8Phantasy Star IV, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Ristar were my favorites.
- itspuddingtime, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Shining in the Darkness was my favourite

- markgl, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3everyone's a critic and knows better...
- Nedearv, on 01/26/2008, -1/+0Chrono Trigger should be like the reverse Godwin's Law. Whoever mentions Chrono Trigger first wins.
- SteveMax, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I believe Godwin's Law isn't exactly what you think it is. Google it.
- Nedearv, on 02/17/2008, -0/+0It was my metaphor that YOU didn't understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
Usually, whoever mentions the subject of Godwin's Law loses the debate. I was saying that Chrono Trigger should make the mentioner automatically win the debate. That's why I said it should be "like" the "reverse" Godwin's Law.
- Nedearv, on 02/17/2008, -0/+0It was my metaphor that YOU didn't understand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
- SteveMax, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I believe Godwin's Law isn't exactly what you think it is. Google it.
- BabyWookie, on 01/28/2008, -1/+1Chrono Trigger is ***** over-rated. I played it after FF III (VI) and thought that it was a flashy RPG-lite in comparison and wasn't nearly as dramatic and memorable. Plus, it was too short.
- krabat, on 01/26/2008, -3/+20Correct.
- collegekidd, on 01/26/2008, -8/+121Well of course. It had Super Metroid.
- corsairstw, on 01/26/2008, -2/+52And Super Mario World. AND the original Mario Kart and Star Fox.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -0/+16Super Mario RPG, Final fantasy series, Stunt Race FX, Earthbound and many other random stuff
- Sidzilla, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Star Fox was one of the greats, but for sheer turn off my brain fun I liked Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
- darkciti2, on 01/26/2008, -32/+4what happened to digg?! why is every story about scientology???
- cherwilco, on 01/26/2008, -1/+26this one had nothin to do with scientology until you mentioned it.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -4/+2Insert Massive Scientology Bashing Fest after this comment
- AROZ, on 01/26/2008, -3/+17Donkey Kong Country is in my opinion a classic as well. There were so many hidden items and mini games and secrets the soundtrack was terrific. Zelda a Link to the Past was great too, but my cartridge had the memory issue where a file could disappear after awhile.
- carlwalton, on 06/02/2008, -1/+2No other game can match the greatness of the rainbow gun at the end of Super Metroid.
- twishart, on 01/26/2008, -1/+5Or the absolute tear-jerking scene of baby metroid first nearly destroying you, realizing who you are, protecting you from mother brain's attacks, and then sacrificing it's own life to save you - I remember being reduced to a bumbling, teary 14 year old way back then. I had never really hated a videogame boss, but holy *****, I HATED Mother Brain. Most satisfying boss fight ever.
- jedikv, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1I think you take ur games way too seriously dude.
- MarkKezner, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1That sweet weapon was called the Hyper beam. Wielding that thing was the best 4 minutes of my life.
Yes I know I'm a nerdfanboy. You don't have to tell me.

- AwesomeMonster, on 01/26/2008, -15/+141Snes wins hands down. Nothing has compared since, it's the only console that I consistently have played through almost all my life
- rosettastoned69, on 01/26/2008, -8/+25Same here...I'm a PC gamer, but if I play a console, it's SNES 90% of the time.
- Dylson, on 01/26/2008, -26/+3You're a PC gamer? Well, it is a sad thing that you have no voice in the batter lol.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -9/+32PC Prevails
It is the longest surviving, ever evolving, system with pretty much full backwards compatibility
Its not a console, but its a dang good gaming platform- Dylson, on 01/26/2008, -8/+19Agreed. I'd take a PC over a game console any day.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/26/2008, -2/+26Plus eventually all of the old consoles are playable on the PC.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -9/+32PC Prevails
- Dylson, on 01/26/2008, -26/+3You're a PC gamer? Well, it is a sad thing that you have no voice in the batter lol.
- posure, on 01/26/2008, -18/+3I'd still pick NES over SNES, but it probably depends on what you grew up with most because its mostly nostalgia. SNES would be number 2 (although I had a Genesis). Original Xbox would be number one if you count modding since you can put on all the emulators and hack up some original controllers for authenticity.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -0/+11no we don't count modding
- Brad324, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1I agree. And playing the whole library on the dreamcast = bliss.
- Varz, on 01/26/2008, -14/+3All things considered I would rather be playing a Mass Effect than than a 15 years old rpg.
- rickyg67, on 01/26/2008, -5/+10yeah, just so you could look at all the digital boobs, you perv. That game is like 120% sex and violence. SOCIETY, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3though not that old and not on SNES
Fallout Series were awesome
Super mario RPG was awesome too
- androothebear, on 01/26/2008, -3/+3WHY IS EVERYONE IGNORING THE N64!?!?
- solid12345, on 01/26/2008, -3/+4Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario 64, Mario Kart. There, everything else on 64 was *****.
- Poggins, on 01/27/2008, -3/+1Super Smash Bros. was NOT *****.
Apologize to it, NOW.
The N64 had TONS of great games, you're mad.- solid12345, on 01/27/2008, -1/+2I have to apologize to a hunk of plastic?
- Poggins, on 01/27/2008, -3/+1Super Smash Bros. was NOT *****.
- MarkKezner, on 01/27/2008, -1/+5Because it didn't have the consistently good software SNES had. For me, N64 was a disapointment
- solid12345, on 01/26/2008, -3/+4Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario 64, Mario Kart. There, everything else on 64 was *****.
- solid12345, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5Yeah well the port of Final Fight for SNES sucked ass, no 2-player, no Guy, no Rolento.
But the Sega CD port was pure beauty with albeit less color but more detailed sprites, full 2 player, and a rocking CD soundtrack.- BabyWookie, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Still, the pinacle of the side-scrolling beat-em-up genre is Streets of Rage 2.
- rosettastoned69, on 01/26/2008, -8/+25Same here...I'm a PC gamer, but if I play a console, it's SNES 90% of the time.
- dasdef, on 01/26/2008, -29/+2stupid 3.71 m33 cfw update stopped my psp from running my emulators, Time to figure that ***** out.
- Sabin, on 01/26/2008, -8/+4I just figured it out this morning after 3.80 m33 broke my snes9x. Got it up and running again today so I can play through FFVI for the umpteenth time.
- CATSCEO, on 01/26/2008, -5/+3What the ***** did you just say?
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 01/26/2008, -9/+2Looks like the Nintendo DS bury squad is on duty.
- Cloudime, on 01/26/2008, -0/+9Looks like the off-topic-not-in-any-way-related-to-the-article bury squad is on duty (A.K.A., the general Digg public.)
- chingy1788, on 01/26/2008, -2/+2oh just buy a SNES... and the games, its not like the games cost $50 a pop now, neither does the System
- jasnmb, on 01/26/2008, -11/+163When I was a kid I bought the Genesis instead of the SNES just because the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 1 didn't have blood, but the Genesis version did. I'm kicking myself for that decision right now. I missed out on a lot of great SNES games.
- Jenadae, on 01/26/2008, -3/+16ABACABB, its sad i remember that still
- sovietninja, on 01/26/2008, -3/+3yeah i use that as my master password! j'k.

- darkciti2, on 01/26/2008, -9/+23Nothing will ever replace:
Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Select Start- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -6/+7I don't know why you got dugg down for the Konami Code. It's Infamous. Must be alot of kids tonight . . .. to young to know of such holiness.
- brian1625, on 01/26/2008, -2/+15Works on Digg too.
(Up key, Up key, Down key, Down key, Left key, Right key, Left key, Right key, B, A, then Enter/Return) to expand all comments.- Halukard, on 01/26/2008, -1/+10Wow, just wow. I can't believe I tried it. Better yet, I can't believe it actually works !
- Syphon8, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Yep the only codes I'll ever remember are OBOYOBOY in GH and the Konami code because of Digg.
- Nekiruhs, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3I thought that was just a joke till I tried it! Wow. Thats up there with "Oh noes! I broked ur commentz!".
- xaeon, on 01/26/2008, -2/+1I was always under the impression that up, down, left, right, A and start was the most famous code (sonic the hedgehog level select cheat, for those who didn't know).
Also, I would place the SNES third, behind the Dreamcast and N64. ALSO, the American SNES (which I assume that is a picture of) was really ugly compared the the UK one.
- SwankRock3000, on 01/26/2008, -5/+13I'm in exactly the same boat, only I have no regrets on getting a Genesis over an SNES.
All the great SNES games were provided to me later at no cost, thanks to emulation. So, really its Win/Win- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -8/+1yeah but they were 'dirty' by that point. we used them all up by then and were playing PS2's and N64's. So by then, what was new to you was old to us.
but i'll digg you for emu.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -8/+1yeah but they were 'dirty' by that point. we used them all up by then and were playing PS2's and N64's. So by then, what was new to you was old to us.
- samssf, on 01/26/2008, -3/+18lol, when I was a kid, I bought the Genesis instead of the SNES. My friend came over and was teasing and saying that the Genesis sucks and I should have got a SNES. So I used black electrical tape to tape up the inner carton and place it all back into the box... and then told my mom that I got the wrong item and for her to exchange it for an SNES. I was standing there watching as the cashier opened the box only halfway, didn't notice the tape... and let me do the exchange ^__^. She said that they never let people exchange electronics but that they'd do it for me. I was so happy about that, especially when I got Zelda.
- bingobongony, on 01/26/2008, -11/+2And you got a lot MORE great games with the Genesis.
- keithburgun, on 01/26/2008, -3/+1At least you're smart enough to see your mistake.
- banido, on 01/26/2008, -1/+9Sonic (1,2,3), Sonic and Knuckles , Earthworm Jim , Ecco the Dolphin, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Street Figher II, Mortal Kombat 3, Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Road Rash, Dynamite Heady, Flashback (I really like this game), the "Strike" series, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, X-Men, Dune...
"I regret nothing!"- dyoel182, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3I'm with you. I have no regrets from never owning a single NES system. In fact friends always asked me to bring the Genesis over so they could play games with decent graphics.
- Elranzer, on 01/26/2008, -3/+3Except that any game that was released on both SNES and Genesis (Earthwork Jim 1&2, Mortal Kombats 1,2,3,UMK3, Street Fighter II Turbo) were much better on the SNES.
- jedikv, on 01/27/2008, -2/+1Mortal Kombat the SNES was better? Apart from the controls, I must disagree.
- naterpoke, on 01/26/2008, -4/+3bein an avid Mortal Kombat'er the genesis sucks, you dont get the 2 punch/2 kick buttons you do in SNES, PLUS on the SNES controller you get L and R, block and run.
i bought a genesis instead of an snes, and ive always regretted it- banido, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5And you didn't know about the 6 button controller for the Genesis ?
I bought two of them just for MK3.
http://solosega.webcindario.com/imagenes/md6pad.jp ...
A-Low Punch
X-High Punch
B-Block
Y-Run
C-Low Kick
Z-High Kick- zxjams, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1exactly.
though i love SNES (never owned one, only genesis before PSX) after playing with the big genesis controllers, NES and SNES pads always felt really tiny for me. could be just a matter of conditioning, but I still prefer a controller that fills up my hands, like XBOX over the PS2.
- zxjams, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1exactly.
- banido, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5And you didn't know about the 6 button controller for the Genesis ?
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1You're lucky you even had a Genesis. It went from NES straight to N64 for me.
- samsneaky, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0jasmd, dude you should download an emulator and some roms and catch up man
- BabyWookie, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2I got a Genesis and a SNES later on. I'm glad that I've owned a Genesis, for the following reasons:
Strider, Revenge of Shinobi, Truxon, M.U.S.H.A, Herzog Swei, Super Monaco GP, Afterburner 2, Ghouls 'n Ghost, Castle of Illusion, Space Harrier 2, Thuder Force 3, Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Shining Force, Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 2, Phantasy Star IV, Gunstar Heroes, Tiny Toons Adventures, Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Socket, Shinobi 3, Ristar, World of Illusion, Vectorman, Lightning Force, Biohazard Battle, Dynamite Headdy, Shining in the Darkness, Golden Axe, Golden Axe 2, Beyond Oasis, Monster World 3... all are exclusive games and I'm sure that I am forgetting a ***** load too.
Genesis was way worth it.
- Jenadae, on 01/26/2008, -3/+16ABACABB, its sad i remember that still
- gameradam, on 01/26/2008, -33/+18N64 FTW!
- Gir53457, on 01/26/2008, -1/+11Actually I support this comment. Most name the NES or the SNES as the greatest consoles ever because of the Nostalgia factor. Sure I had fun too with Chrono Trigger, Mario World and Star Fox as much as everyone else here did; but I rank the N64 as the highest because of the sheer amount of fun I had with it was tenfold than I did with the SNES; mostly because I never actually owned an SNES and only played it at my neighbors house after school. I put in countless hours into Mario 64, Waverace, NFL Blitz, Banjo Kazooie/tooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Starfox 64 and practically every game blockbuster ever had in stock to rent.
- glory, on 01/26/2008, -4/+3ATARI 2600 for the ultimate in nostalgia for me. I guess I'm old.
- DonWigler, on 01/26/2008, -6/+105Anyone who has played Chrono Trigger or FFIII/6 already knew what this article has stated.
- samssf, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4I loved Lufia II for the SNES... it was the first RPG that really hooked me on the genre.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3ff3/6 was the first rpg that introduced me to rpg. what an introduction.
- Akairenn, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Lufia II > all. Nothing will ever equal the sheer awesomeness of the Ancient Cave.
- Spartycus, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2That, and the awesome plot (then) and great soundtrack! I'm still looking for a game that can induce the same emotional involvement that Lufia 2 did.

I wonder why it didn't imediately hit it off in the USA?
Go Ness!- fael, on 01/26/2008, -0/+9Because the game included the guide in a big box that retailers used to put too high to reach (or watch), and the price was like $10 bucks more expensive than the averge SNES title. But I agree, EB is THE best snes title.- Foodeater133, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2Even worse is that Earthbound 2 (or rather mother 3) never made the shelves. I was, and still am, extremely disappointed. I think I would do a jig if they decided to make it for a new system
- Poochyfud, on 01/26/2008, -2/+7EarthBound is untouchable. It is amazing. It is indeed the best SNES game, and as the best game on the best system, it is one of the greatest games EVER. But seriously, with accompaniment like FFIV, FFV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World (and All Stars), Link to the Past...other systems just get blown out of the water.
- PeppermintPig, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2Exactly... developers took advantage of the system's capabilities after having to live with the NES for so long. One of the reasons the SNES should get credit is because it was one of the last predominantly pixel based systems, as opposed to the early and crude games with 3D, by comparison. It was the heyday of the pixel artist, whose talents are sorely under appreciated sometimes.
But I think there's something more important that qualifies a console for greatness: Ease of development, financially speaking. These companies are looking to profit from the licensing process, which seems like a hindrance at times. Proprietary formats such as cartridges also inhibit open source development. But since emulation is possible, your computer can be your console for many games now. For its time, I would probably agree that SNES was the best, but at this point the line has been delineated with games seeing exposure on PC as well as console, and it's really all about the games. THEY are what makes a console great, and the titles you mentioned reinforce that.
EVO Search for Eden, Sim City, hell, even Mario Paint was a decent peripheral based game, and games like Sim Ant took advantage of the peripheral as well. FFIV, most excellent. Super Mario Kart, Smash TV (though not exclusive), I could go on...

- mrjit, on 01/26/2008, -8/+13Wasn't the trick to playing Japanese games to simply cut off a little tab inside of the cartridge slot? I remember doing that for some reason.
- MrSunshine, on 01/26/2008, -1/+6On the Mega Drive/Genesis, yes. A friend of mine did it back then for some japanese games he got, but his european Sonic cartridge stopped working afterwards.

- adraft, on 01/26/2008, -49/+9I never owned Super Nintendo until I turned 17 (2.75 years ago to be roughly exact) so by the time I played one it seemed dated and the only games I could find sucked. But I have played a ***** load of Mario Paint and Uniracers (best game on the SNES) on my friends SNES, and while they're certainly fun, I'd say this "award" was thrown away. Personally, my vote is for the Genesis.

- TrevorBelmont, on 01/26/2008, -24/+6What are they teaching you kids in school nowadays? The Nintendo Entertainment System represents the pinnacle of electronic entertainment. It's simple science, people.
- StatiK69, on 01/26/2008, -19/+5I disagree... The Nintendo is the greatest console of all time. I found the joys of almost passing out blowing the dust out of those cartridges, expanding my mind by finding ingenious ways to get the cartridges to stay in the machine, the joys of tending to a burn after touching the console that had been on for 20 hours straight and the ability to beat the hell out of my brother for using the special turbo controller to cheat and beat me in ice hockey.

- rosettastoned69, on 01/26/2008, -10/+23I still have my SNES, in great condition, from Christmas 1992. By far my favorite console system! So many great games!
Super Metroid, Turtles in Time, All Stars, Super Mario World, The Zeldas, Yoshi's Island...those were my favorites.
But screw that Jurassic Park game with no save points. That game would have been cool if I didn't have to leave the damn console on all the time.- saranagati, on 01/26/2008, -0/+29wasn't there only one zelda for the snes?
- linuxrocks2007, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2There was a remake of the original on Nintendo's satellite service. It was only in Japan though.
- random19, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2sadly, yes.
- ganlet, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Yes, there was only one Zelda for SNES but to alot of people it was arguably the best Zelda
- Fighter2a, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2I remember that Jurrasic Park game. I was young and my mom wouldn't let me leave the console on so I never got far.
- smackafiyah, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1Ah I remember that Christmas that year, got a SNES with SMW, Street Fighter 2, and Home Alone 2 (don't ask)
- InfernoMan, on 01/30/2008, -0/+0Yep, I got my SNES at the same time as you and I still bust it for the occasional game.
Zelda: Link to the Past, DKC 1-3, SMW, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mario All-Stars, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, were my favourites. I remember playing Mortal Kombat with my buddy a lot. Sadly, I missed out on Super Metroid - I'll have to cough up for a copy of that.

- floatingpoints, on 01/26/2008, -4/+98Ah, back when games were 20 hours minimum and RPGs were at least twice that.
Oh yeah, and back when companies were SMART and bundled their best selling game (in this case, Super Mario World) instead of intentionally leaving it out to milk people dry.- sivartrenrag, on 01/26/2008, -1/+15How exactly is it smart to pack in your best selling game?
- tanside, on 01/26/2008, -0/+8maybe not smart, but awful darn nice! and it was a tradition back in those days.
- grovest4life, on 01/27/2008, -0/+3sell more systems beat your competitor.
- floatingpoints, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Consumer is happy that they get a good game, and you one up your competitors.
It works rather well.
Let's use Gears of War, as an example. A year ago, the 360 cost $399. GoW was $60. That's a large chunk of change for your average gamer. Now, MS doesn't make ALL the money from the console alone, but also game purchases. Had they thrown in GoW free, the person might have then decided to ALSO pick up ANOTHER game.
You also factor in people who bought a 360 before GoW came out. They will pay for the game, word of mouth catches on that this a a ***** awesome game, people go out and buy it.
It's really basic marketing. But most companies today are TOO ballsy in the fact that they rely on their company name alone. Worked out well for MS and Nintendo, but Sony? Trust me, had they included Resistance in a PS3 bundle, it woulda sold more.
- gs68, on 01/26/2008, -1/+6So, a game that is under 20 hours long (every scrolling shooter ever, nearly every 2D platformer before Castlevania: SOTN and Super Metroid, every arcade game ever) isn't a good game?
- samssf, on 01/26/2008, -5/+3What? Over 20 hours? I remember the SNES games never being long enough when I was a kid. Now that I'm old and don't have as much time for games, I'd rather them be a lot shorter and just have a great story. Leave the replay value up to online multiplayer features.
- Sabin, on 01/26/2008, -1/+2You can finish Chrono Trigger including all side quests in under 24 hours. Now try to tell me its not a great game.
- rjam710, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2All I got when I bought a Genesis was "Lion King: the Game." Bundles sucked back then as much as they do now.

- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -0/+11I dugg your comment because of DreamCast. Ultimately, I still believe the SNES was the greatest of all time, but the DC came into a close 2nd.
DC was the ***** though, I loved mine passionately. But, still it's barely beaten by the SNES . . . . barely. SEGA needs to retake the market with a DC2. Price it between the Wii and the PS3, and make a killing - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+8The thing is the SNES had such a load of quality games for it, whereas the Dreamcast didn't really last long enough to see a huge flow of games. Both were awesome, though. Shenmue, Grandia II, Jet Grind Radio...speaking of which, we need a JGR 3, damnit!
- KamikazeeDriver, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1Oh dear Shenmue. Despite your long load times, you were my crack.
- theblt, on 01/26/2008, -1/+5Shenmue FTW??
I really really miss that game. - samssf, on 01/26/2008, -1/+6I loved Shenmue for Dreamcast... I wish they'd make another Shenmue for 360 or ps3. Hell, I wish developers would just make some high quality games for the new systems. 80% of the games that are released are trash... I know development is more complicated and high-cost nowadays, but damn we need some more innovation.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+1Well, there was a Shenmue II for the Xbox. Shenmue was supposed to have, like, 5000 sequels attached to it. I guess we see how well that turned out.
- jedikv, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Considering both games nearly bankrupted Sega - I don't think we will see another one anytime soon.

- doyoulikeworms, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3Ah the good old days... I remember looking for backdoor/free dialup passwords and numbers to get online with the DC and play Q3A. Those were the days.
- sephiroth4, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2:(. NFL 2k, Soul Calibur, Ready2Rumble tournaments...... I still gander through all my dc magazines, still play power stone 2, all the shooters, and SAMBA de AMIGO! damn sony.
- jagenjg, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Dont get me wrong I loved my DC. Do you guys remember the demo disks that came with the DC mag. That was neat, but I still have to go with the SNES > DC.
- rarson, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3I love the Dreamcast, but no. It didn't have nearly enough third party support to come close to the SNES.
- Rileyper, on 01/27/2008, -1/+2Genesis > Dreamcast that is all
- smackafiyah, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Thats a toss up but I almost have to agree with this, but they're both definitly my top 2
- sykotik, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1I completely agree about the Dreamcast. It was definitely my favorite system. Not only that, it was so easy to hack and run homebrew on. Yes, you could pirate games as well, all ya needed was that boot disk with the shiny reindeer spinning around when you booted it up.
Quake 3 on dialup, now there was an experience. Shenmue, fun for a while. Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage, that was a great game in my opinion. It actually held my interest all the way to the end. That's rare for games these days, at least for me. And there were a couple of airplane games that were fun. Definitely ahead of its time, and the keyboard you could buy, excellent! And the memory card you could also play those mini-games on.
I mean, that was a great system as far as 3-D systems go. 2-D, SNES all the way. Sure MK1 didn't have blood, but it had much better graphics. MKII on genesis looked like crap, though interestingly, the fatalities actually lasted as long as on the arcade. For example, Baraka's fatality where he lifts you up and ya slide down his arm blades took about 2 seconds on the SNES, but much longer on Arcade and Genesis.

- schoate09, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1I agree, I bought a Genesis, N64 and SNES last year for the same exact reason. Played them a while, and now I have them for sale. Honestly, my scope has changed where I just feel more immersing games are what I look for, and although some SNES classics are still fun, the N64 did not age well at all.

- Fryguy8, on 01/26/2008, -17/+8SNES is a great system, but "best system?" I don't think so. I think that the author's point is poorly argued, and it relies too much on nostalgia. The best system ever should be something truly groundbreaking. And while the SNES was, I think that the NES and Playstation 2 top it in this aspect. NES brought home console gaming to a wide mainstream audience, and Playstation 2 was the first jump into much more realistic gaming, and has one of the largest libraries of titles to date. I think that these 2 systems are fundamentally more important and better than the SNES. SNES would be 3rd in my mind.
- Smwbigboss, on 01/26/2008, -3/+13The PS2 wasn't groundbreaking at all. It had marginally better graphics than the Dreamcast, and pretty much the same exact controller from the PS1 (except for analog sticks and rumble taken from the N64)

major design flaw in the NES was that slide in cartridge slot, the pins tend to wear out

- neuroelectron2, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1Your points are valid and the PS2 Had wonderful games on par with the SNES. But the PS2 Sucked balls for many reasons. The cheap manufacturing and consistantly overpriced system. Same controller as PS1, It plays DVDs which is cool until the laser stops working altogether. Personally, I don't think the games have aged as well as the SNES.
- Smwbigboss, on 01/26/2008, -3/+13The PS2 wasn't groundbreaking at all. It had marginally better graphics than the Dreamcast, and pretty much the same exact controller from the PS1 (except for analog sticks and rumble taken from the N64)
- digitallysick, on 01/26/2008, -5/+9I believe you are right, Zelda, Mario World, (even super mario allstars) mario cart ohh yeah
- wasanasan, on 01/26/2008, -6/+7"..you generally remember the times you were forced to leave your SNES running for fear of losing your progress because you could only save at the end of levels..."
true story :D
snes ftw! - bigbadgoat, on 01/26/2008, -15/+7I think its hilarious how he knocks the ps1 for the lack of innovation, and commends nintendo for third party support. No system brought better third party support than the PS1. The guy has a very blatant bias towards the nintendo products during his summary, and says a lot of things about each console that simply aren't true.
- kahnartizt07, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3Really though! What really good games did Sony make for the PS1? Gran Turismo is all that comes to mind (although im not thinking too hard). Not to hate on Sony or anything but it's true. Squaresoft, Konami, and Namco pretty much took over, among others.
for the record PS2 should be second on best systems. I can argue for hours on why.- ummagummas08, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1Final Fantasy's? Chrono Cross? I can think of a few.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/27/2008, -0/+1Sony never made those. Those are third party titles.
- ummagummas08, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1Final Fantasy's? Chrono Cross? I can think of a few.
- MrSteamTank, on 01/26/2008, -6/+4Remember kids that only Nintendo innovates and everyone else copies!
Terrible article. This quote really did it for me.
"Suffice it to say, the Playstation was great in its own right, but it was a product of its time -- a moment in video game history where innovation was losing ground to copycats and graphics meant more than anything else."
Considering every system essentially copied the previous system and added more graphics to the mix you'd have to be extremely fanboyish to believe this.

- linuxrocks2007, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7I don't know why people are burying you. Rock N Roll Racing was one of my favorite racing games of all time.
- diggit23, on 01/26/2008, -7/+26Best. Mariokart. Ever.
- lukeev, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Amen brother, amen. The feather!
- enchantedsky, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0I agree mostly. I bought the Gamecube's Mario Kart and my first impression was......this isn't really as fun as the Mario Kart I played back in the SNES days. The tracks and karts were just better designed.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 01/26/2008, -2/+22SNES FTW! I've been calling it the greatest console of all time for a loooong time now :)
- nugx, on 01/26/2008, -6/+82Too true. I once kicked my friend out of my house after a SNES v. Genesis debate got too heated. I was right then, and Digg backs me up now. Booyah!
- bingobongony, on 01/26/2008, -8/+11Having Digg on your side proves that you owe your friend an apology. He was CLEARLY right.

- neuroelectron2, on 01/26/2008, -2/+2The N64 didn't have enough games, and the graphics are not very good.
- Krodis, on 01/26/2008, -5/+5Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country 2 (The entire trilogy, but especially 2), Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, etc; etc;
I actually have the PS1 at #2. Beyond that, it's hard to say.- vandalin7, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2I agree 100% PS1 had so many amazing games. I'm a big RPG fan and both of those systems had amazing RPGs.
SNES-
Chrono trigger
FF series
SM RPG
secret of mana/evermore
BoF I/II

lufi I/II
playstation-
xenogears
FF 7
BoF III/IV

beyond the beyond- Tearlock, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2If you liked the Secret of Mana then you should also try the SNES title The Illusion of Gaia. Good Game. Actraiser is also a good one.

- m00nstone, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Dude, somebody had to say it. Even to this day, some of the best multiplayer video gaming ever.

- Ryudo2k9, on 01/26/2008, -6/+11This used to be my fave system ever but Dreamcast took the #1 slot for me,it was so ahead of it's time and helps a tad when it has my fave game ever in Shenmue.
DC lived a short but great life IMO- VeganG, on 01/26/2008, -1/+7Do you know where I can find some sailors?
- Joeshie, on 01/26/2008, -15/+10Yawn, another article that attempts to look like a factual article when it's just some guy reminiscing about the "good ole' days". I enjoyed the SNES too, but there was MASSIVE loads of crappy games on that system which you had to wade through just to find a good one.
Nostalgia is such a seductive liar.- lukeev, on 01/26/2008, -1/+1booo!
- schoate09, on 01/26/2008, -3/+1I know you're getting buried, but I dugg you up because I agree with what you say. I fell into such a trap with VC games as well as purchasing old consoles. It was fun back then, but seeing what there is today, the fun getting out of it when played now is short lived, then I go back to my PS3.
- Nerfdude, on 01/26/2008, -12/+12i'm sorry, but the NES is by far the best system. and before just assuming i'm going "older is better".... i had a 2600, and it was groovy, but you couldn't pay me to go back and play that thing now. well... maybe Combat. or Warlords.
NES started the revolution. NES emulation keeps me entertained at work every day. SNES is a solid contender, but NES is where it's at.- praxisseizure, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4I hear this.
i've been playing zelda 2 for days. over and over agian. played palaces' 4 and 5 just today.
played lifeforce and contra hundreds of times.
even played tmnt the painfully hard original a week ago.
of all the classic hype, i'd still say NES reigns king in my world.- vikki77, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3dugg for zelda!
- aki42, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1Yes life force is awsome.
- praxisseizure, on 01/26/2008, -0/+4I hear this.
- derekwinkle, on 01/26/2008, -21/+13Correction, SNES is the second best system. First being the Sega Dreamcast, but everyone knows that.
- XYZ1, on 01/26/2008, -1/+0The Dreamcast was a good console. But the problem is that it had not so much games and most of them were only arcade ports. No Mario, no Zelda,...just a couple of hours average gameplay...
- erikhensarling, on 01/26/2008, -12/+6Sorry, I don't read anything affiliated with Game$pot.
- Gogogo111, on 01/26/2008, -0/+7Oh..they're a company...so they have money! Thats what the $ is for! Witty.

- duke1981, on 01/26/2008, -8/+6Actually the Neo Geo is the greatest, but no one wanted to develop for it other than SNK. Think if Square would have made FF6 on that machine..
- Khast, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2It could have been superior at the time. Hell, the Atari Jaguar could have been the greatest for that matter, the Saturn, and the Dreamcast were also good candidates for best system. But, if the great games weren't there, the system usually doesn't fare well. For all that matters, PC may be the top "Gaming" machine, but if they made more games for Sun Microsystems....the PC wouldn't have stood a chance either.
- Sabin, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1The depends if you are talking about making games for the SPARC running solaris or for X86 running solaris. One of those configurations is technically a PC.
- Kelmon, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Hard to say - the price of entry for the NeoGeo was so monumental when compared to other systems (until the advent of the CD drive) that I never played one and very few people will have had the opportunity to experience it.
- neuroelectron2, on 01/26/2008, -0/+1I emulated it, the games are pretty similar to SNES if you ask me.
- BabyWookie, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1The early games, yes, but the ***** like Last Blade 2, Metal Slug 3 and Blazing Star were way beyond SNES, graphics-wise.

- rsdigi, on 01/26/2008, -1/+38At first i disagreed till i thought about it. Mario Paint is the game that started my career as a graphic artist. So that "game" alone makes it a winner.
- MrSunshine, on 01/26/2008, -9/+2Every serious graphic designer started with Deluxe Paint. Mario Paint is a toy (yes, I had it and sold it).
- lukeev, on 01/26/2008, -0/+5Oh man mario paint, that brings back memories.

- badken, on 01/26/2008, -17/+5I wonder how much Nintendo advertising paid for this article.
- Khast, on 01/26/2008, -1/+3probably nothing. Heck, when I say how great a system is, I don't make a cent. Maybe that would change if I started a blog? Doubtful.
- Lysogen, on 01/26/2008, -0/+9Probably billions. It was a great move. You know how many SNES consoles they're going to sell now that CNET announced it was the greatest console? ....At least 5 trillion.
Wtf? - liquidmetalband, on 01/26/2008, -0/+20 dollars and 0 cents
- xor4200, on 01/26/2008, -1/+4Oh, Chrono Trigger, definitively. Such a deep and melancholic game at times...
