- kazimir34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+53Being the greenest without a Ghz isn't surprising, but only 17 watts is quite impressive...
- Itazura, on 10/10/2007, -6/+49"Takahashi found that the Wii consumed just 17 watts."
Now you're playing with power lol. - gamergod42, on 10/10/2007, -5/+44Sure, its green... But many of us have it hooked up to our big screen TVs. Some plasma and LCD TVs use nearly 500 Watts!
- Greatmatt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39I have rechargeable batteries in my Wiimotes. Why don't you?
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27Rechargeable batteries aren't all that expensive, and Energizer makes some that charge quickly, and maintain high capacities. They will last longer than regular AA's
- lesty420, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26Bring them to a recycling center in your area they create a crazy amount of toxins
- ZennZero, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21I have a big TV. Should I go by a small TV just to hook the Wii to it?
Come on. Loads of people have their Wii on a large screen. - crossmr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Maybe you should do a little math before sticking your foot in it? Even WITH wiiconnect24 turned on using: http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-4.htm as a reference and average 8 hours of on time vs 16 hours of off time, the wii only uses about 7800 a month while the xbox uses about 39000 and the ps3 uses about 43500. Turning it off shrinks that even more to about 4000. So its not even remotely close.
- frieddonuts, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Dude, your fridge sounds like the most awesome appliance ever.
- dewyjuhl, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19***** I'm so sick of the word "green"
- Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -8/+21Oh ffs. Of course it is. It has all the processing power of my fridge. Buried for being obvious.
Though they forget to mention that in stand-by it uses almost as much power as when it's on. - nakile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11The watt usage in standby for the three systems is something like this:
Xbox 360: 2.5w
Playstation 3: 2w
Wii (with WC24): 10 w
Wii (no WC24): 1w
Wii is still very nice power wise. It's like a extra night light. - chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Yeah, but with the Wii, most of it still remains on so it can remain connected to WiiConnect24.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12How is he retarded. When the system is in standby the Wii DOES have power running through the WiFi card. That's how it maintains its 24/7 connectivity (Wiiconnect 24..). If you ever feel the console while it's off if you have Wiiconnect24 on, there is some noticeable heat. Heat doesn't just appear out of nowhere so one could assume that there is a fair bit of power going through it.
- xxeyes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I haven't bought disposable batteries in years. I'm surprised they still exist, except for low consumption things like tv remotes, etc. Everyone should be using rechargeables for their higher consumption gadgets, it only makes sense.
- bightchee, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I have the NYKO recharging station. It replaces the batteries with rechargeables and has a dock in which the remotes rest when not in use. If I didn't have that I would be swapping out rechargeable AA all the time.
- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I thought the Halo 3 Xbox 360 was the greenest console.
Thank you, I'll be here all week. - N256, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm selling my scientific calculator for $100, it is way more greener than a Wii, and for less than half the price! Not convinced to buy yet? Just think, with those 17 watts you are WASTING on the Wii you could be moving 17 kilograms of ANYTHING one meter PER SECOND. Buying my calculator will save the world.
- xxeyes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10You buy a console "to boast" about what?...and why?
- ronh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I thought it would be the PS3, because it's always off! Oh snap, fanboism!
- Hockey37, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8As long as there aren't any jaggies in my milk, I'm in for one.
- xxeyes, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15I can't find the reference, but the Wii consumes more power than the other consoles when not being played due to the WiiConnect24 standby mode. Unfortunately, that feature probably makes the system significantly more wasteful with power than this study indicates.
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Go buy rechargeable AA batteries. They're like $20 for a pack of 4 with the recharger. You can use the other 2 for your camera or something.
- NinjaNato, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Based on the findings in this article and nakile's comment on standby watt usage, with an assumption that you used your console for 1 hour a day (and Wiiconnect 24 turned on for the Wii), total Watt usage per day is:
Wii: 247 W
X360: 251.5 W
PS3: 217 W
PS3, i'm impressed you big beast of a grill you. Though as soon as you start to increase the amount 'Go Time', these stats change significantly. Shown here: http://i4.tinypic.com/4pdp4xx.png - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Please, tell us how a Hummer is better for the environment than a Prius.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9*clicks the green button to digg you up*
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Wii is smaller than PS3 or Xbox360, so it takes less silicon and plastic to make.
- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7You're exactly right. That's why I have WiiConnect24 turned off.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9I'd be curious to see a bigger picture analysis for all the consoles. Power consumption of the console is likely to be the biggest factor and the Wii is tremendously commendable there, but don't forget about production/distribution/promotion/disposal. There are massive industries that are required for us to know about the console and own one, and they can have a big impact on the environment too.
- Tabou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yeah, I'm sure it is. Keep telling yourself that.
/sarcasm
I take it you're referring to this "junk science" report by a "think" tank that assumes a hummer lasts 35 years, and travels 379,000 miles, while a Prius lasts only 109,000 miles over 12 years. I think we can also safely assume who paid for that report.

- SirBotchness, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9yes, cause the world problems come with using the goddamn xbox 360 and ps3, not the hundreds of other appliances, cars, factories, whatever. But this is important, good job.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+45000 watts
- gekkjo, on 05/05/2009, -1/+5Last year in my area I noticed that the city has deemed all household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) "universal waste" and will recycle them for free. Might want to check in your area as lesty420 pointed out.
- TheFlamingoKing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So, you didn't buy Metroid yet then, huh?
- N256, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you're that worried about it, you shouldn't be playing video games. In fact, get off your computer right now.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And motorcycles can be more fun than cars too
- Fredtheviking, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Wii is also the least powerful console on the market. It like saying motorcycles are (in general) greener than car... well duh!
- whiteEEnerd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5WiiConnect24, please turn it off and urge Nintendo to disable it by default.
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How did he get the green colored model so early?
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4yep.. It even shows up in my wireless routers status page. If you do not have it configured to connect via wifi, then it probably doesn't keep the wifi turned on. I am just guessing on that though since I have only ever had my wii connect via wifi
- fumar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Its getting better actually, as in it exists in some form.
- darny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Older machines are often less efficient...buried.
- pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3All of the newest consoles consume power while "off." There was an article a while back which discussed how much each console used on and "off". All of them use a standby mode rather than really turning off.
- MrObjectional, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I love how as more games come out, that multiplier is increased. Remember when it was just Gamecube 1.5?
When Brawl comes out, it'll probably be as good as 4 Gamecubes taped together! - stupergenius, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5So you can feel Watts going through wire?
- Nooze2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Loads of people have their Wii on a large screen (including myself), and for most games it really doesn't look too bad either. Especially any 2D style game such as Wario Ware. Those types of games look very stylish, but then again, with them resolution doesn't matter that much.
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4FTA:
Wii : 17 watts.
Xbox 360: 194 watts
PlayStation 3 : 171 watts
Am I the only one that caught this? This guy says that the PS3 uses less power than the 360. But an earlier chart submitted to digg said the opposite. - totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You mean like all the additional shipments back and forth for the Xbox360 repairs? :p
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"I'm not going to play a particular console just because it consumes less power."
Like they say, you are either part of the solution, or part of the problem :p -
