- georgemason01, on 12/13/2007, -3/+56I'm gonna have to go with Super Mario 3 as the biggest "limit pusher" of the list. It was also one of the best game sequels ever. Brings back memories of the movie "The Wizard".
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -2/+39I guess they DID manage to tighten up those graphics, after all.
- LaSepultura, on 12/13/2007, -0/+32Anyone else see the screenshot of that Battletoad's level and get controller smashing flashbacks?
- doshindude, on 12/13/2007, -0/+22Kirby's Adventure.
Proved that parallax/3D effects are possible on the NES - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -1/+22I still consider Super Mario Brothers 3 the best game ever made.
- mtschmie, on 12/13/2007, -0/+19While its graphics were never overly impressive I remember Super Tecmo Bowl's full team rosters and level of customization being unmatched in '91.
Having Barry Sanders return your punts might seem like a good idea, but he undoubtedly will get injured. - ggtsu, on 12/13/2007, -1/+19Wow, talk about behind the times. You need to catch up and get yourself a Super Nes. It's got better graphics and 4 extra buttons on the controller!
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+14"Brings back memories of the movie 'The Wizard'."
Yes, that always has been SMB3's weak point. - fognozzle, on 12/13/2007, -0/+12SNES was similar, going from Super Mario World which was barely above Super Mario 3, and getting up to Donkey Kong Country...
- JlmAWP, on 12/13/2007, -0/+12I would say "The Wizard" should bring back memories of SMB3....
- AwesomeMonster, on 12/13/2007, -2/+14Racketboy is probably my favorite recurring website on digg, glad to see some more stuff.
- deviationer, on 12/13/2007, -0/+11***** yes Crystalis. That game needs to be on the virtual console
- racketboy, on 12/13/2007, -1/+11Thanks! Always nice to see some more support on Digg :)
And thanks to MrBabyMan! - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -1/+11gamestop still usually has spare copies of battletoads on hand for some reason, just make sure to call ahead of time if you want one
- StrangeFamous, on 12/13/2007, -1/+11controllers flying, and in some rare cases, being bitten.
- JediMindTricks, on 12/13/2007, -0/+9Dugg for Kirby’s Adventure. That is one of the few games I remember playing as a kid...
- MemoryDump, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8I've always found Super Mario 3 to push the console to it's max. That game is still 1 of the best games out there!
I've got it installed on my Wii/Virtual console and my kids love it! - zengonzo, on 12/13/2007, -0/+8Only on level three. Two and four, if you ask me, did not receive nearly the attention they were due.
- Abominous, on 12/13/2007, -4/+12*****
- Unclekoolaid, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7ya and 16 bit graphics. The graphics, let me tell you, are awesome!
- awtripp, on 12/13/2007, -2/+9Crystalis FTW. But no mention of Final Fantasy 1, that game was revolutionary when it came out.
- FeloniousMonk, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7remember the cheat where you could pause the game just as the boss was taking damage, wait for a couple minutes then unpause, and the boss was dead?
thanks for the memories, racketboy. I owned half of those games. Castlevania III was my all-time favorite. - soulpunisher, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7OMG Blaster Master!!! I loved that game when I was little. And Megaman,Ninja Gaiden,Crystalis, and FF1 were the most played games on my system.
- pjkli, on 12/13/2007, -0/+7Holy crap!!! I thought I was the only retard that bit my controllers!
- saisumimen, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Bring back the tanooki suit!
- joehobbes, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6I'm seeing it on the honorable mentions...
I agree its a great game, but after seeing some of the featured video clips that are linked to, I don't know if Ninja Gaiden is worthy of being up top. Sure it was fast and was sweet, but the sprites and animation is rather basic compared to some of the others. The cutscenes were also cool, but those are also used in a number of other games... - HowitZer25, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6I swear games were way better back then even though the hardware was more limiting.
- racketboy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6Great games, but not that spectacular from a technical standpoint...
- dafragsta, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6What?! No Snake Rattle and Roll? I was just telling someone how that game was pretty good looking for an NES game and it had one of the deepest, hardest, and most compelling platform gaming experiences ever on the NES. Even with the Game Genie, it was hard, but a lot of fun.
- kiiwii, on 12/13/2007, -0/+6You do seem to forget how much the graphics progressed throughout the lifespan of the NES... look at Super Mario Bros, or Ice Hockey, or Clu Clu Land, or Pinball... and then look at the later games like the ones listed on this site.
Pretty amazing what they were able to do with technology that was 6-7 years old. - Namakemono, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Nice list. I think Track & Field 2 deserves to be on the list as well. It had great graphics and animation. It was also one of the few NES games to have actual speech in it.
- StrangeFamous, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Yep, all it takes is some 8-bit pixels going in the wrong direction, and a normal child regresses to a neanderthal.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Or proof you sucked at Mario Kart.
- racketboy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5In the US, yes, but it was released in 1988 in Japan.
That's what I was going by. - drcato, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Did anyone else play Bionic Commando? The levels were pretty expansive and there were quite a few diverse enemies, although the bosses were a definite disappointment. Swinging around on bionic grappling hook gave it great game-play. Bionic Command is ranked right up there in my Hall of Fond Memories.
- TheTap, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Finally Mario could fly (in 3).
That alone made playing that game so much cooler. - joehobbes, on 12/13/2007, -0/+5Ditto. Definitely the place for old-school junkies to get their fix.
Nice to see MrBabyMan joining in on the racket-love. :) - justinjacobs, on 12/14/2007, -0/+5Bring back Kuribo's Shoe!
- fognozzle, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Battletoads did as well, on the speed bike stage
- joehobbes, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Life Force was actually a modified version of Salamander:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salamander_%28arcade_ ... - cesclaveria, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4I guess Zelda pushed the games in general (gameplay, story telling, etc) but did not pushed the hardware that far.
- racketboy, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4???
- Mononuclear, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Yes but it didn't push the limits of the NES system. This list is about games that pushed the technical limits of the system, not games that had revolutionary concepts or game play.
- monstarmike, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4I wasted too much time playing that game. I will always remember the cuts to jumping for the ball, close sacks, and the touchdown celebrations. Man. Going to have to find that ROM now!
- patch6, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Good amount of obscure gems on that list.
- racketboy, on 12/13/2007, -2/+6I thought Metroid was pretty standard in terms of NES graphics. For its time of release, it was nice, but in the grand scheme of things, it didn't really push the system that hard.
- StrangeFamous, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3One of my all time NES favorites, I'm glad to see they've given proper credit to it's magnificence.
- Veretax, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Kriby's Adventure rocked!
Contra and Super C owned!
And Castlevannia, man that was a fun title
Super Mario 3, one of the best games ever.
but Bah they forgot Bionic Commando! grrr - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Dugg for Battletoads.
- ZombieKiss, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Big Nose the Caveman was pretty hardcore. It even had a switch in the back of the cartridge to bring the graphics down a notch in case it was getting too intense. I have no idea what the switch REALLY did, but it was there.
