- Callik, on 07/14/2008, -12/+198Blu-Ray? Yeah, that's the polar opposite of expensive and niche >.>
- KingGoonie, on 07/14/2008, -13/+121I think the people at Sony need a dictionary to figure out what niche is. Niche is pretty much exactly the oppossite of what Wii is... and sales prove that.
- bardo77n, on 07/14/2008, -8/+85In other news: Howard Stringer is an idiot.
- seraph582, on 07/14/2008, -3/+80lol @ the comment on that page: "If by 'expensive' he means cheapest system available, and by 'niche' he means the mass market."
- itsripitsrip, on 07/15/2008, -4/+64i think it's sad that the selling point for a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE is the fact that it plays blu-ray.
gimme a break. - TheDeepFriar, on 07/14/2008, -11/+68Hey Stringer:
$250 < $500
expensive how? - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -8/+63HA. Nintendo has pretty much won it from Sony and Microsoft already. Nintendo has carved out their own market where one didn't exist and now almost own it 100%. Microsoft and Sony both compete in their own traditional next-step-from-last-gen market theatre, which is why they both have sold less than what Nintendo has - they compete with each other. As the Wii overlaps into Sony/MS markets as a gaming-device/casual-toy, Nintendo has almost no viable competition. The Wii attracts both traditional gamers merely because of the Nintendo association and non-gamers because of its appeal as not just another PS3/XBOX gaming machine.
No matter what derogatory similitude anyone can come up with, its still the best selling gaming-machine this generation. - Br3ach, on 07/15/2008, -4/+37Blu Ray isnt exactly lighting people's hair on fire after the death of HD-DVD, using that as your only selling point makes the PS3 sound like a cd player that can play games too instead of the other way around.
Ugh, damnit I hate Sony to hell - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+30 I'm a PS3 owner and that made me laugh. well played!
- Reclinatron, on 07/14/2008, -4/+32To be competitive shouldn't Sony be making money on the PS3?
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -2/+29Good point. Blu-Ray is still not prime time enough for him to be that conceited. I'm not a fanboy of any console, I like all 3, and the PC also. But this is crazy. It is impossible to determine which console is "best" because its all a matter of opinion, but the most popular current-gen console is definitely the Wii, by far. Go to any Wal-mart, BestBuy, etc, and you will see dozens of extra 360's and PS3's, but the Wii's are always sold out, still. And where the hell does he get the balls to call the Wii "expensive"? I find it funny, that you never hear about Nintendo people talking ***** about Sony or Microsoft, and Microsoft does their own thing, but Sony, latey, has done nothing but whine and make excuses why they aren't the top contender anymore. Tip to Sony: Less bitching, more must-have game making.
- CollapseControl, on 07/14/2008, -23/+44Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition is 20x better than Metal Gear Solid 4.
My $300 purchase is a lot more enjoyable than a $500+ purchase. - doshindude, on 07/14/2008, -1/+21quiet?
- chaosblade77, on 07/14/2008, -3/+22Which... is not what the Wii has. The Wii has mass appeal. If anything, the PS3 has much more of a niche market than the Wii, in general at least.
- mediaspree, on 07/15/2008, -0/+19Yeah, after my girlfriends grandfather played a wii, he bought one for himself and my girlfriends parents, and all her aunts and uncles. Can;t see that happening with a ps3 or xbox. No really, I have a girfriend.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -3/+20There is no loss of revenue. There is no reason to panic. The PS3 is outselling the Wii. Final Fantasy XIII will be exclusive to the PS3. There is no need to panic.
/Iraqi_Information_Minister - chaosblade77, on 07/14/2008, -0/+16That depends on your definition of casual games. A lot of people also call Halo a casual game, because it has such a broad appeal.
Some people say casual games are the "easy" games.
Some people say casual games are the games with mass appeal/massive sales.
Some people say casual games are the Brain Age/Language Teaching games/Minigame Complications
Some people say casual games are anything without realistic looking graphics
Some people say casual games are any game designed to appeal to many different demographics.
Really, I'm noticing more and more often people are simply using casual to cover "whatever games they dislike," or even just to complain about certain features or aspects of a game they do like. In many cases, I don't think you can actually determine whether or not a game is "hardcore" or "casual"... they are just marketing terms. - DeadlyCouncil, on 07/15/2008, -1/+17The fact that he mentions Blu-ray instead of games is like a fun little view into their business model!
Format > Games - Jhiaxuz, on 07/15/2008, -5/+20Apparently, all you have to be is a douche to run Sony.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 07/15/2008, -1/+16Hardware sales for the week ending June 28th, worldwide:
Wii: 502764
PS3: 158971
Which one is the niche product again? - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -5/+18To be perfectly honest.
The Nintendo Wii is in a whole other realm compared to Xbox360 and PS3. Wii makes you get up, move around, it's fun to play with friends and family, not so fun alone...
360 and Ps3 are the typical pad + console + flashy graphics = GUD STUF KAI!
Not to say they both don't have great qualities, for instance once Fable 2 comes out I'm gonna buy a 360 and play that till my brains pop out of my head, but still if given the choice between sitting down to play Halo 3, Gears of War, or Call of Duty 4 with 3 other people, or my Nintendo wii with 3 other people I'd choose the Wii any day for the pure fun factor. .....Even though I haven't turned it on in about 3 months. :D - inactive, on 07/15/2008, -7/+20I love my PC.
- CollapseControl, on 07/14/2008, -4/+17How much does MGS4 cost?
How much does the good controller cost?
....Exactly.
If I say RE4 is more enjoyable to me than MGS4, how you gonna tell me different? ... Retard!
RE4:WE is a lot better than the PS2 version, it has all the content AND the awesome control scheme. - WraTH017, on 07/15/2008, -2/+15I love how wii is such a fad, and totally not in competition with anybody... yet, MS and Sony keep going out of their way to implement Nintendo's original ideas... Like motion sensing, and the Miis.
And still, for a non competitor... the Wii is still kicking their ass in hardware sales, big time. - daivos, on 07/14/2008, -6/+19I use the Wii all the time. The PS3 I've owned for two months I use for one thing, the Blu-Ray DVD player. If I chose to keep only one, the Wii would win out easily.
- wayyy, on 07/15/2008, -1/+13Yeah man, you pretty much just proved his point...
- doshindude, on 07/14/2008, -4/+16Sony needs to learn math.
$250 is less than $500, therefore, the PS3 is the expensive niche here.
unrelated note: this comment system sucks, it deleted half of my comment 3 times before I could get it to save. - cesclaveria, on 07/15/2008, -5/+17I have to agree with him, I have played all the metal gears and my favorite is still the original. I would take Resident Evil 4 any day.
- ejhdigdug, on 07/15/2008, -4/+16That's why your loosing your shirt to Nintendo?
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+13I'm pretty sure anyone who wants a dvd player by now already has one, i mean they sell them here in the uk for about $40 for a cheap one, not everyone has a HD compatible tv yet (i don't) and the popular system always attracts the ***** games that people make for about $1.50 and chuck out at a massive rate, look at the ps1 and 2 for prime examples of this
- wickensworth, on 07/15/2008, -0/+12*you're *losing
- pakruse, on 07/14/2008, -3/+14"without some great multiplayer games"
Funny, I found the exact opposite to be true. I play my Wii almost exclusively as a multiplayer system - between Smash, Kart, and games like Wii Sports; I almost never play them when I'm by myself, but they're the easiest games for a group to just sit down and play.
If you meant "unacceptable ONLINE multiplayer mode", then I agree with your statement. - KingGoonie, on 07/14/2008, -6/+17Um... It has almost hte same amount of exclusive 90+ titles as 360, and it came out a year after... and it has FAR more then ONE that PS3 has.
Tend to buy a wii later on... yes that will explain how Wii is absolutely dominating.. because they are buying them after the other two systems. Oh wait.
Also Niche is a specific segment of the market. Now are you going to say the system with the most sales appeals to a specific segment? Only casual gamers? Hmm.. then why did smash, galaxy, RE4wii, etc sell so well also?
Gamers who buy a system for a dvd player instead of game playing is niche. - Devotia, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11"The amount of games coming out for the Wii is abysmal,"
People have been saying that since launch day. And honestly, for people like me who don't have as much dedicated console time (Not a slam, I just tend to spend more time on the computer than on a console), the Wii is perfect. Sure, we might only get one stellar game per month, but when its taking me a month to get bored of a game, that lineup is just fine. Not to mention most of the games I have double as party games. Sure, Halo's fun, but I'll take Brawl/Kart/Wario/Rayman/RB over it for a party.
Also,
"The people that only give a ***** about raw graphics horsepower are a niche."
The people who only give a ***** about graphics power are also running their games on dual SLI 8800 GTXs on their PCs. - peestandingup, on 07/15/2008, -1/+11LOL, really?? Out of all the ***** Sony has ever pulled or said, THAT was the deciding factor??
- JayD16, on 07/14/2008, -7/+17I think he was trying to find a nice to say gimmick...and failed horribly.

A niche is a specialized market. It can be sizable but it not the broad general market. Girl on girl porn? Broad market appeal. Midget porn? Niche appeal. Here's an article which suggest that the PS3 may top the Wii... in FOUR YEARS.
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/12/analyst_ps ...
That said, I do agree with one thing he said and that the fact that the PS3 is the best way to get a blu-ray player. As fr as I know it is still the only player that can access the internet to get firmware updates. Which basically means any other player out there will be woefully inadequate in about 2 years time.
I have both and enjoy them both. I find the debate pointless. Stop talking up your own system and putting down the Wii and just make decent games. That's all I really care about. - Khast, on 07/15/2008, -1/+9I hate how "Hardcore" gamers claim that the PS3 is the most kickass gaming console on the market. I haven't really seen any games for the PS3 which made me want to get one. All the games which I seem to like on the PS3 are also available for the Xbox360 and PC.
Now if you were a true "Hardcore Gamer" having such an argument would be a non issue, because you already have all 3 of this generation's consoles...and like them all. I am more of a hardcore gamer than most of you wannabes could ever be. I have just about every gaming console since Atari...and still play them.

- djruden, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8The Wii has been worth it for me. I played thru Mario Galaxy, Zelda TP, Metroid Prime 3, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Super Paper Mario, and a few others that aren't coming to mind now, but all those games have been awesome fun! Currently rocking on the Mario Kart -- As a gamer, the Wii is great and I look forward to more great games in the future.
I have nothing against the PS3 but after I got a Wii, I wanted another system for the games that weren't coming to Wii and I picked up a 360 for both the price and the streaming HD movies on xbox live. I'm not really looking to start a new movie collection in Blu-ray. - slartibartphast, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7Compared to the wii, sony and ms are the niche. Nintendo seems to be drawing a crowd wider than anyone expected for a gaming device. I was in shock when my 78 year old mother in law knew about wii fit and really wanted it (and uses it).
- chaosblade77, on 07/15/2008, -0/+7I agree with... a little of your point. Yes, games expected to be on a single console that go multiplatform usually don't go to more than 2 platforms. And, the PS3 and Xbox360 won't catch the Wii in sales, but the only reason for that is non-gamer interest (much like the DS) and brand recognition. Even with software catered to the non-gaming audience the Wii sells to, the 360 (and PS3) won't manage to overcome the brand recognition. Wii is a household name like Kleenex or Dominoes.
I'd also like to hear your explanation of "sells because people can't find it". Yes, some competitive natured people might be more pushed to buy one, but that doesn't work for the average consumer. The average consumer gets frustrated loses interest, the fact it's holding on is half a miracle (it held on on it's on for a while) and half the fact the media is helping it. Also, Nintendo ramped up production on Wii hardware also proves they aren't intentionally keeping it off of the shelves... it sold 1.4 million units last month alone. Oh, and we are also overlooking the fact they sit behind the counter at stores like Walmart for a matter of days before they sell out.
Lastly... "next gen" is simply a marketing term. You say the Wii isn't "next gen" because it's not HD? Because that's the only thing it could really benefit from that the other two have (and aside from that, Nintendo's reasoning for not adding it made sense). Really, none of the consoles are next gen, the PS4 is next gen. The next Xbox is next gen. The PS3 and 360 are not.
Oh, and one more thing... if Metroid is a "kids game" to you, I have to wonder what you play? Do you own anything other than GTA and Manhunt? - skywake, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8The PS3 appeals to core gamers, and people who want a PS3 shaped Blu-Ray player. The Wii appeals to retro-gamers, non-gamers, core-gamers, elderly-gamers, fitness nuts and pretty much everyone who has some money left over after buying a PS3/360.
I know of multiple storys (and I hear I am not alone) of people who have played the Wii and decided to go up and get one. The most recent case was just yesterday as a matter of fact. The Wii is cheap enough and appeals to enough people for this to happen. I haven't heard of any phenomenon to the same extent for any console.... including the DS. - gzusfreak, on 07/15/2008, -1/+8You know, games with amazing graphics and no substance suck. Sure, the Wii's hardware isnt as powerful, but a lot of the games are fun (see: Zelda TP, SSBB, Galaxy, Wii Sports, No More Heroes, etc.). Im not saying there arent great games on the other systems, there are (Gears, MGS4, DMC4, GTA4), Im just pointing out that those systems have plenty of games that tout their graphical capabilities over gameplay sometimes.
Also, who cares if a console has a DVD player? Everyone had a DVD player before the current gen systems came out. And if you didn't, you couldve picked one up at Walmart for $30. -
