- Shorties, on 01/25/2008, -1/+37Now all we need is the Dreamcast
- APHughes, on 01/25/2008, -1/+31Phantasy Star FTW
- Gundabad, on 01/25/2008, -2/+21I really feel that this is front page news. First of all, very few people had a Master System compared to the ranks of NES owners. There is a serious treasure trove of classics here waiting to be played. Second, the fact that Sega is putting their hand held games on the Wii could cue Nintendo to start porting over Game Boy classics if they see titles performing well.
- wushi, on 01/25/2008, -1/+10wonderboy in monsterland ftw
- NeoTEKK, on 01/25/2008, -1/+10Choplifter...here I come.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+9I miss my Master System. I played the hell out of Zillion. Loved that game.
- Epyn, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9This is great news, but I haven't bought much on the VC lately, Nintendo is sitting on a lot of IP and would do well to start pumping out their own games. Tons of NES/SNES classic games I originally dreamed of having available on the VC and they still haven't released them.
/Still a little annoyed with the decrease to two titles a week and half the time neither are nintendo products. - mustbepatient, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7Only cool people digg Sega articles (especially SMS articles), and cool people ar worth more in the Digg algorithm :)
- Animal, on 01/25/2008, -2/+9I know I'm just going to sound like some Nintendo fanboy but I thought that the Gamecube was more powerful than a PS2. How can a Wii only be 'in many ways... equal in power to the PS2'
I know a Wii isn't a powerhouse of processing/graphics in this generation but it's still more powerful than anything last generation. - BuddyDoQ, on 01/25/2008, -0/+6Hours of my youth lost to Ghostbusters, Astro Warrior, Afterburner, Choplifter, and Outrun. It was my first console, and if I could find all the parts I'd still be playing it today!
- tanside, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7You must be a couple years too young....
- Dan11023, on 01/25/2008, -2/+7sweet! i think it would be awesome if they also bring the 32x, sega CD, and sega saturn games.... I really wanna play those sonic games
- anonatron, on 01/25/2008, -0/+5dont forget Ys, another great master system RPG!
- BeatPunchbeef, on 01/25/2008, -1/+6Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Space Harrier, hell yeah
- jeffabs, on 01/25/2008, -1/+6I want a mic attachment and Seaman
- NTolerance, on 01/25/2008, -0/+4Golvellius: Valley of Doom
- tEhKewleSt, on 01/25/2008, -2/+6I'm not satisfied until I have FFIII and Super Punch Out for the SNES. What's up with more Genesis games than SNES games on the NINTENDO Virtual Console? Rant.
- kyouteki, on 01/25/2008, -3/+7Although not masterpieces compared to their Genesis namesakes, the Sonic the Hedgehog games for the MS/GG were decent games in their own right, and damned challenging to boot. I'd love to see them appear on the VC.
(Also, the original Phantasy Star would be a welcome addition.) - Arkz, on 01/25/2008, -0/+4Bollocks! Alex Kidd in Miracle World!
- CerMakAlot, on 01/25/2008, -0/+4Word, thats the best thing to come out of the master system if you ask me. Phantasy Star 2-4 on genesis would be sweet for VC as well.
- Fallout911, on 01/25/2008, -1/+5ALEX-KIDD FTW!
- Jeffler, on 01/25/2008, -1/+4Are you aware you've all turned more people away from Ron Paul than you've recruited? I know countless people who won't vote for him because of how far you guys go.
- kbebee, on 01/25/2008, -1/+4 I know I'll get plenty of arguments about this, but I say that Phantasy Star was THE Role play game of the 8 bit era, hands down. Most everyone has played Phantasy Start 2 or 3 or 4......but if you haven't seen or played the original, you won't understand as those are just mere shadows of the original that never matched it's "wow" factor or "fun" factor. The game was one of the first to have menu on menu systems of text (not the first, one of the first). It also had 3D dungeons that were very very challenging and intense. Multiple planets, huge maps, cool characters, interesting music (for 8 bit)......I played it before I played Legend of Zelda and it spoiled my LOZ experience because it was so superior. This is the first time I'm jealous of Wii owners. I love my PS3, but this is really make the Wii the system for the classic. Awesome news.
- eeggum03, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3Do I really need to play Altered Beast again? Yes I Do!
- BabyWookie, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3I'm not knocking the Wii here, but I really don't think that it has enough horse-power under the hood to emulate DC games. If you have a 360 though, there's some DC goodness coming to XBL Arcade. Rez and Ikaruga.... mmmm. Well, I suppose the DC games can be ported directly to the Wii, like many were ported to the GCN.
- bjs3171, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3ok, but they're not comparable. this is Master System, not Genesis, and was out with the NES.
i want that penguine game where he had to push the egg down layers of ice. - TigerGD, on 01/25/2008, -2/+5Rambo!
- crackedplastic, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3Miracle Warriors (the other "big" RPG for the SMS) wasn't bad either.
- kaytrio, on 01/25/2008, -1/+4on the secret, unanounced hard drive that's built in every wii, obviously
- Synn, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3If you think it sucks...why did you digg the story then?
- bjs3171, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3i had no idea there were sonic games for the Master System.
- YoctoYotta, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Rock paper scissors mofo!
- ender52, on 01/25/2008, -1/+4Someone else did own a Turbografx! I knew it!
- zeebo, on 01/26/2008, -1/+4MHz aren't everything. The 360 and PS3's general purpose processors are not normal PPC hardware. They have the same sort of lengthened pipelines that allowed the Pentium 4 to reach high clockspeeds, and those came with the same sort of performance penalties. The Xbox360 and the PS3 are much more powerufl than the Wii, but not nearly by the amount you're implying, twice to three times as powerful would be a better estimate than 10x. Also the Wii's graphics chip is more comparable to Radeon X800, than a Geforce3. It is in fact almost the exact same hardware, although the Wii is limited by only having one quad.
As for running Dreamcast games, they could do that. Sega has had the Naomi development environment available for Nintendo's current hardware platform for quite a while, any game they want to release they can port almost as easily as recompiling. The main problem with running dreamcast games is the storage restrictions. Its more likely that they'll release any titles as ports like they're doing with House of the Dead, rather than release them through the virtual console. If the Wii's disc drive is up to it, I suppose they could implement a BC mode for specific dreamcast games and require the original disc with only the games executable being required. - Gnasche, on 01/26/2008, -0/+3Still waiting for Herzog Zwei (Genesis) on the VC.
- samfishercell, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3I'm aware that there are some serious gaming gems on the Master System, but I'd like to see Nintendo get around to releasing some more SNES/64 gems for the VC before venturing off like this. I'm all for other systems on the VC, but Nintendo's support of their own games has been rather dispiriting. [i.e. - Harvest Moon 64 - NOW]
- BenKenobi88, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2Nobody's forcing you to buy them...some people might want to play the games they played as a kid. And this is the legal way to do that, short of going out and buying the old systems and games again.
- zeebo, on 01/26/2008, -0/+2Because Nintendo is giving them more money out of the deal. Sony and Microsoft will want to sell those games for far less money.
- anonatron, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2The sega sound was in the system rom so we will miss out on that... :(
BWaaa Daa Duh - smoger, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2oh man. i SO need to dig out my SMS/Light Gun/3d Glasses/games
- spyrochaete, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2The DC had some really crazy hardware that is difficult to emulate. Dual video processors, a RISC CPU, and custom audio hardware. Getting the DC on Wii is like getting hockey players to start jousting.
- spyrochaete, on 01/25/2008, -0/+232x is probably too tough to write a software bridge. Same goes for FX chipped SNES games like Starfox. As for Sega CD, where are you going to store all that data?
- spyrochaete, on 01/25/2008, -2/+4Between Neo Geo, TG16, and now SMS, Virtual Console is becoming a real treasure trove for hard-to-find titles. Shame North America doesn't get all the amazing releases they do in Japan, though. If only the Wii were designed to better handle larger virtual collections!
- metapop, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2phantasy star 3 was superb. i loved the part where you choose a mate and create your heir. phantasy star 4 was great as well... let's not forget shining force 3 either.
- ebolaworld, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2And don't forget the 3DO.
- crichton101, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2I'm very annoyed with the decrease in number of titles released.
- CPUGUy, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2Best. game. ever.
- caddyalan, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3The Game Gear game that I'd want most: Shining Force Sword of Hajya. Not well-suited to a handheld system which used a lot of batteries, but great with a battery pack.
The Master System game that I'd want most: Wonder Boy 2. A fun action game that plays a little similar to Zelda 2. - dragon76, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2Zillion was too hard for me, I enjoyed Zillion II a lot more.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3Lets hope Gamespot and other sites don't list these as release reviews and stuff. I'm sick of looking at wii title list and seeing old games.
