Rose-tinted Nostalgia: Top 5 Franchises That Nintendo Forgot
ripten.com — I admit it, I ’m a hypocrite. I have no problem busting Nintendo’s chops on forums across the internet for banking on nostalgia these days, but I’ve got a secret rose-tinted past of my own. Read on as I explore the top 5 series that I think time (and Nintendo) forgot and explain how they should be resurrected.

- Cutter20, on 12/08/2007, -3/+22Bring back Startropics! For DS! Pretty please!
The original was one of the best NES games ever.- thebellmaster1x, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I could never beat it. There's was always this one spot with platforms that sank into the water. It was in the graveyard. I could never jump fast enough.
That was when I broke my first NES controller.- mountaincable, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Just wait, it gets even harder!
- kewlito, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Mirror: http://duggmirror.com/nintendo/Rose_tinted_Nostalg ...
- OrangeTide, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I'm waiting for StarTropics on the Wii virtual console.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I could never beat it. There's was always this one spot with platforms that sank into the water. It was in the graveyard. I could never jump fast enough.
- cmgonzalez, on 12/08/2007, -2/+12I'm glad to see StarTropics #1 on there. Great game.
- kev92486, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Same here. Nobody I know has ever even heard of it! They have no idea what they're missing..
- Girlieq3, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4I bought that game at a yard sale and loved it.. I just assumed it was a game that never really made it...
- kev92486, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Try to find the second one. I'd say it's on par with the first one as far as overall game play. It's the same idea except diagonal movement is added as well. The last level had me frustrated for a decent amount of time as well which really added to the satisfaction of finally beating it. :D
- Girlieq3, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4I bought that game at a yard sale and loved it.. I just assumed it was a game that never really made it...
- kev92486, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Same here. Nobody I know has ever even heard of it! They have no idea what they're missing..
- lardoandkeg, on 12/08/2007, -4/+1How is it that Nintendo forgot about these games??
- BuckleButt, on 12/08/2007, -1/+7I love the game, but Nintendo didn't make Lolo.
- belfastga, on 12/08/2007, -1/+8HAL Labs did, which is (at least now) a subsidiary of Nintendo. You know, the guys who make all the Kirby and Smash Bros. games?
- JayD16, on 12/08/2007, -4/+53Aren't the Paper Mario games Nintendo's current answer to a Mario RPG?
- belfastga, on 12/08/2007, -1/+22I say as much in the article, but I suppose what I'm asking for is the unique experience of Super Mario RPG, itself. There are lots of great characters and scenarios never used again, and it was a Square-Enix collaboration, something I'd like to see again.
- tedhead2k, on 12/08/2007, -2/+13Unfortunately. Not quite the same experience.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Basically. I like all of them, but I wish that they had kept turn-based combat in Super Paper Mario. That was really one of the biggest connections to the first SMRPG.
- Corrosionx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1There's Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time for the DS and Mario & Luigi : Superstar Saga for the GBA that are Mario RPG-like enough.
- doshindude, on 12/08/2007, -4/+9Last I checked, Wrecking Crew was a terrible game (screwattack had an entire special on it)
- belfastga, on 12/08/2007, -3/+1Watched it, wasn't impressed. Sounds like they were really stretching to find something ostensibly bad about the game and only came up with "well, it's kind of weird for a 'Mario' game." I'm not sure a minute-and-a-half video counts as an "entire special," either.
- darny, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3Wrecking Crew was one of those games that you wouldn't count or mention when in 1988, after they learned you had nintendo, you were asked "what games do you got?"
- IIIBTW, on 12/08/2007, -3/+7Startropics! Startropics!
- bfaulk04, on 12/08/2007, -3/+19Super Mario RPG is and will always be one of my favorite games of all times. I still play it on occasion. Paper Mario, etc may be a "solution" to having a sequel, but until they bring back all the characters, the look/feel, and the gameplay of the original, I will still cry myself to sleep at night.
- emjaymj, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2If you want all the characters, look/feel, and gameplay of the original... play the original. Sequels that are graphic updates of what are essentially the exact same games is exactly what's wrong with developers today.
- lukas88, on 12/08/2007, -2/+12Pilotwings! What a great game. I remember how great it was to make the fat instructor who was always negative cry by getting a perfect score. Also, I had a crush on the lady instructor.
- SpeshulEd, on 12/08/2007, -2/+6Pilotwings would be a perfect addition for the Wii
- ChuckieBallz, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Did this game have a helicopter mission at the end? Or am I thinking of another game?
- razordancer, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Yes, it had a surprise helicopter mission at the end.
- terracottapai, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Yes, apparently terrorists have this thing about kidnapping civilian flight instructors.
- Girlieq3, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Pilotwings is available on N64... not a bad game but definitely a very limited amount of game play
- eriktechn, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1To be honest I played Pilotwings 64 a couple of days ago. It's a game I come back to every now and then. Actually, it was the reason I bought the N64 when it came out.
- crapmatic, on 12/08/2007, -5/+1Ultima? No, on second thought, maybe some treasures are better left undisturbed.
- OrangeTide, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Well Ultima is not a Nintendo franchise either.
- darny, on 12/08/2007, -3/+6Pilotwings was and still is awesome (for the SNES, the N64 version didn't quite...hit the mark)
F-Zero should be on this list too.- belfastga, on 12/08/2007, -1/+5I thought about F-Zero, but it *did* make it on the GameCube, and Captain Falcon is still a pretty big part of Smash Bros. I still want a new one, though.
- fantasticFlan, on 12/08/2007, -1/+8Since when is F-Zero forgotten?
- Supernova36, on 12/08/2007, -1/+5It should? I'm pretty sure F-Zero is still going strong..
- SquigglyP, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4You'd think F-Zero would have had a lot more games for how popular it seems to be. I think there is a lot of potential for that franchise that they've only scratched the surface of.
- darny, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2F-zero on GC? I wasn't aware of that.
- Pixelpaws, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1F-Zero GX. There's also a matching arcade game (F-Zero AX), but sadly, only a small handful of those machines ever made it to the US.
- nizzy1115, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Pilot Wings was my favorite game for SNES. the 2 levels where you would fly the apache helicopter to rescue the girl were bad ass.
- Auto, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Pilotwings 64 and that big robot thing that was below Mount Rushmore that you could shoot with missiles from your gyrocopter. Yes.
- FoxOrian, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4And don't forget that shooting Mario in the nose resculpts his face to become Wario, that was a cute easter egg.
- deadnoob, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4i hope they dont forget about starfox. come on, you know starfox wii would be nice.
- Supernova36, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Not Nintendo related, but I'd love to see someone have a go at a new version of Cannon Fodder.
- mountaincable, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1That was an excellent game, I was under the impression there was a sequel. ?
- alexkorova, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1There where 1 second and some expansion packs I think but they where nothning special if I recall.
- mountaincable, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1That was an excellent game, I was under the impression there was a sequel. ?
- JerodSlay, on 12/08/2007, -2/+1I guess I forgot them, too.
- ChuckieBallz, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2My pick is Excitebike
- HanSolo69, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2Did you miss "Excitetruck"?
- rarson, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Is that anywhere close to the original Excitebike?
- HanSolo69, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2Did you miss "Excitetruck"?
- Carrot1991, on 12/08/2007, -1/+16Where the hell is Kid Icarus?
- laserfish, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Kid Icarus is getting some love thanks to Brawl. If you remember, after Marth and Roy appeared in Melee, we started getting Fire Emblem games. I don't think Kid Icarus will be gone for much longer.
- Irvulous, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1There's Ice Climber and Earthbound chars and even Mr. Game & Watch in Smash, yet no new games. Don't put your money on a new Kid Icarus game.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2Seriously. I've loved that game since it came out, and have been waiting all this time to see a sequel. It was one of the standards of nintendo for what seemed like ages, right up there with mario or castlevania, and then it just faded out.
- GhostyBoy, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Kid Icarus would kick so much ass on Wii. That should have been high on this guy's list.
- theDevilsDue, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I can't believe I had to scroll halfway through the comments before I found someone who mentioned Kid Icarus.
- laserfish, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6Kid Icarus is getting some love thanks to Brawl. If you remember, after Marth and Roy appeared in Melee, we started getting Fire Emblem games. I don't think Kid Icarus will be gone for much longer.
- KFantasy017, on 12/08/2007, -1/+5I would digg this a million more times to get a new Star Tropics game.
- GoalieStr1, on 12/08/2007, -2/+15I'm sorry, no Earthbound?
- FoxOrian, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3It's not that they've forgotten Earthbound, Nintendo of Japan has just sort of forgotten that other countries enjoy new MOTHER games as well.
- Asianwaste, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3They were a cult following and never sold too well. Overshadowed by FinalFanboydom I guess.
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Nintendo hasn't forgotten about Earthbound. It didn't sell well in the United States even though they tried very hard to market it. The third one was released in Japan, but they never released it in the US because it wouldn't have sold enough.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EarthBound#U.S._relea ... - UNL1M1T3D, on 12/09/2007, -3/+1Yeah buried as inaccurate. Earthbound is my favorite game of all time.
- adml_shake, on 12/08/2007, -2/+5Wow, I forgot all about Star Tropics. God that was an awesome game. And the reason I almost failed seventh grade history.
- elite1247, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4not sure if it was made by Nintendo but i want a new faxanadu please
- tumbleweed05, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1mirror?
- Frostman3D, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Pilotwings was one of the best Nintendo games ever. It didn't have that many memorable characters, and I think that's why Nintendo shies away from it. While I thought the N64 version lacked in several areas, I think it added a lot to the franchise.
- SquigglyP, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I never owned a 64 or gamecube... but it would seem to me that 'Punchout' would be a no-brainer on the Wii, what with the method of control. The last version of that series I'm aware of came out on the SNES.
- HydrogenOxide, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Wii Boxing?
Victorious Revolution Boxing? - YouRookies, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Wii Boxing is trash. I don't know about Victorious but lately these Wii ports are trash too.
- HydrogenOxide, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Wii Boxing?

I thought another top 5, yeah right, but I agree with it, and good to see more nostalgia, I want my children to play these games, probably won't happen.
there were not mirror postings before digg messed up,only site I can stay in the same window and still get logged out of. - childprey, on 12/08/2007, -0/+12I miss Blast Corps. Maybe Rare will use it again on the 360
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Blast Corps on a next gen system would be amazing.
- psykiv, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2After so many years, I finally managed to get all platinum's. I was more excited than the n64 kid when the game told me to stop NOW! :(
- iruel, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Blast Corps. was awesome. I loved that big ass jet robot.
- rebelphoenix, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1It would be nice if they came out with a new Pilotwings. Or released all 3 mother/earthbound games.
- kiylyou, on 12/08/2007, -4/+2What about Blaster Master? Bionic Commando?
Bionic Commando would be the ***** on the Wii.- iheartjebus, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1a new bionic commando is coming out on 360 and ps3
- Cutter20, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I know the site is down at the moment (it's all dugg up) but keep trying back... this article is a great read and ripten has some good articles currently.
- stray, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Hello? Kid Icarus? (And yes, I know Pit is in the new SSB. I will be playing as him.)
- VPurpmalkV, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3No mention of Uniracers. And that was such an awesome game. Makes me wanna dig out my SNES thinking about it.
- MrWhite7, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Mappy Land
You can all go to hell - phazon88, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Needs Kid Icarus and Earthbound.
- statrick, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2i came to post this exact phrase. you are so right my friend, although mother 3 a earthbound sequel recently was made in japan release only. US release please. :)
- seraph582, on 12/08/2007, -2/+1um, i think those all failed to be resurrected for good reasons. Sorry guys. I liked them too, but there are newer better things now.
- Asianwaste, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1The Adventures of Lolo? You had best kept the receipt!
- Lou3000, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Please, please, please can we get a Pilotwings Wii. Or at least release one of the older Pilotwings to the Virtual Console.
- Ventolin, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I still catch myself humming Startropics songs.
- grumbel, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1A new StuntRaceFX and WaveRace would be nice, the BlueStorm was kind of lame successor to WaveRace64 and StuntRaceFX hasn't even seen a sequel.
- joecaffrey, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0Pilot wings was my favorite game as a kid. Download the emulation, it's great. I also had a crush on the female instructor.
- FAKKU, on 12/08/2007, -1/+0WHY IS EARTHBOUND NOT ON THIS LIST.
- statrick, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1http://mother3.fobby.net/
- mecole21, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2proper sequel to Starfox 64
- MrFunions, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Dugg for Lolo. That game was awesome - I still hum the theme song when i'm walking down the street sometimes.
- solid12345, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2WHERE THE HELL IS BIBLE ADVENTURES?
- iheartjebus, on 12/08/2007, -0/+0we need some wii ice climbers.
- alphabetagaga, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1They forgot Battletoads.
- posure, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Battletoads is a Rare franchise and was published by Tradewest, not Nintendo.
- Shambla, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0Just did a google image search on "lolo"....interesting...
- xm1014, on 12/09/2007, -1/+0Where is Sunset Riders? Or Kirby's Super Star?
- rand21althor, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2StarTropics is one of my favorite NES games. The dungeon design was really cool. Sub-C was an awesome ship.
