- NecroSexy, on 04/18/2008, -8/+389Silly me, I thought the TV would ***** out the original cartridge.
- latova, on 04/18/2008, -5/+333What did everyone else expect them to be?
- deadbaby, on 04/18/2008, -7/+189Why wouldn't they be? A ROM is just a dump of the cartridge. Why would Nintendo re-engineer them?
- ironicsans, on 04/18/2008, -2/+141Next you'll be telling me that the Wii games I buy in a store are just pressed plastic.
At least they're not people. - inactive, on 04/18/2008, -13/+141WTF is wrong with you people!? What else, in the name of God's ass, could VC games have POSSIBLY been!? While yes, it is interesting that someone actually managed to actually extract the ROMs, I don't understand why the hell the fact that VC games are ROMs is news! What were people expecting - magical game fairies? What?
- dansmeek, on 04/18/2008, -10/+122i guess this is..... i don't know, i thought that's obvious. the wii has more than enough computing power to run an emulator, and all emulators -- while not exactly coded the same -- are basically translating one language to another language. and they come out identical. so is it really surprising that VC games are just ROMS with an emulator? and a HTML page as a user guide?
i don't think so.
when it comes to this current consoles emulation though, i found the PS3/PSN to do some weird stuff.
i might be wrong, but I am almost positive a game like Destruction Derby downloads at about >100 mbs (say 130 mb) on the PS3 and installs at that size. But, when I "install" the game on my PSP the game size comes out to say "40 mb". I'm not quite sure what's going on. If they include a compressed ROM with compressed textures and music, etc that is specifically designed for the PSP while the PS3 uses the original ROM. not sure.
anyway, if I was a wii owner (which I would be if I could ever find a damn wii) i'd be happy about this. Cuz that means that it would be getting very close to basically having the Wii be like my PSP. Wherein you could have a bunch of emulators and a bunch of games housed on it. Imagine (wii must be hacked first, and say have custom firmware) having an external drive hooked up to the wii with every single NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Neo Geo, and every other damn console game imaginable (it comes out to about 8 gigs excluding Neo Geo and N64 which would up the size substantially).
Now that would make the Wii even more f'n awesome. And from what I've read, it sounds like they have been successful at 'hacking' / 'cracking' it. - inactive, on 04/18/2008, -5/+83Hope we get a How-To on getting these VC games onto my wii channels!
- MattNF, on 04/18/2008, -3/+63You have officially won this comment section.
- spilk, on 04/18/2008, -2/+58I love the xbox 360 controller too, but I think the D-pad leaves a little to be desired. Great for analog-stick games, though.
- sephiroth965, on 04/18/2008, -8/+53I think the gamecube controller is pretty damn great too.
- JordanTW90, on 04/18/2008, -3/+47LOL
- ombudsman100, on 04/18/2008, -0/+41What's worse is the apparent shock over the fact that the help files are HTML files. OH NO THE HELP TEXT IS IN A FORMATTED TEXT FORMAT.
- Merrick178, on 04/18/2008, -6/+44They're selling you perfectly exact copies of the game that you're buying instead of redeveloping each and every game??!?!??!?!!? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!! COMPANIES SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ADVERTISE EXACTLY WHAT THEY'RE SELLING!
Ron Paul, US Gov is corrupt, companies are exploiting us. Blah blah blah, go cut yourselves. - rootnik, on 04/18/2008, -10/+47I, for one, expected nothing less than a full recode for each game exclusively for the Wii.
I'm kinda embarrassed that enough people found this suprising enough to digg it to the front page. If there is any justice your comment will end up with more diggs than the submission. - inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+34why is anyone surprised? Hell the PSX games for the PSP are PSX ISo wrapped in delicious DRM.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -3/+36They were fighting piracy, not emulation. They were upset about emulation, not because of the concept, but because people were playing their games without paying for them. God, people are dumb.
- svensko, on 04/18/2008, -13/+46First
- midbc, on 04/18/2008, -3/+35and if i take the numbers off a calculator and replace them with letters it will be a typewriter
- HolyChimp, on 04/18/2008, -7/+37Playstation controllers are the ergonomic equivalent of a vietnamese hooker.
And by that I mean they suck. - surasshu, on 04/18/2008, -1/+31While the "revelation" of the VC ROMs being... ROMs, is already pretty funny in a "damn, look at how retarded that guy is" way, my favorite thing about this is the indignation expressed in the description over the HTML files.
HTML FILES?! HOW... HOW COULD THEY!! - NeoCortex, on 04/18/2008, -0/+29That feature is being reserved for Shaq-Fu.
- LittleFishChan, on 04/18/2008, -4/+30All you have to do is connect a Wiimote to your PC, connect a Classic Controller to the Wiimote, turn on an emulator, and play whatever game you want (Sega, N64, SNES, NES, etc.). It doesn't look as pretty, but it gets the job done.
- BlueSkyfish, on 04/18/2008, -5/+30http://i29.tinypic.com/l8935.png
- sfcaptainrob, on 04/18/2008, -0/+24Yeah, I always assumed they were just well protected (or not so well apparently) ROMs.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -3/+23First dumbass to post here? You have stiff competition.
- potterboy, on 04/18/2008, -1/+20VC games don't either.
- exomni, on 04/18/2008, -0/+18Soon they'll be pumping us like oil. You've got to warn everyone, you've got to tell 'em! DVD media is made of people! You've got to tell them! DVDs ARE PEOPLE!
- TeamBaldwin, on 04/18/2008, -1/+19OMG they used a markup language for the guides!!! AMAZING...
Why is this news? - KloroFormd, on 04/18/2008, -2/+20Then you have an update and not a classic.
- headband, on 04/18/2008, -1/+18Am I the only one who liked the dreamcast controller
- mgroat, on 04/18/2008, -10/+27Wouldn't it be possible to create a server that imitates the Virtual Console store, and have your router redirect to that when the Wii tries to connect to the Shop channel? No modchip needed.
- exomni, on 04/18/2008, -1/+18Now someone find a way to get regular roms running on the Wii and I'll be impressed.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -17/+34I use an Xbox 360 controller, greatest joypad I've ever used and played in my life.
- dumpyhumpy, on 04/18/2008, -1/+17Every time you say that, a magical game fairy looses her wings.
- exomni, on 04/18/2008, -4/+20What the *****? Didn't they already tell us they were just emulated ROMs?
- iofthestorm, on 04/18/2008, -2/+18Seriously, they pretty much confirmed this a long time ago. Newsflash: ROMs and emulators are not unknown outside the world of piracy, how else do you think developers make their games? And it's been similarly obvious that a lot of stuff has been done through HTML, since the shop channel was shown a long time ago to be a website that only Wiis can navigate to (barring a useragent switcher).
- twiztidsinz, on 04/18/2008, -0/+15^ you get
- Metasquares, on 04/18/2008, -0/+15"Hey! Listen!"
- MrShlee, on 04/18/2008, -1/+15Its a great console for games smacktard
- expert01, on 04/18/2008, -0/+14Although that is not what the OP was asking about, yes, it should be possible. In fact, the shop can be viewed in any standard browser. All you would need to do is some packet sniffing to discover the current address (domain) and user agent, download the entire Wii shop site, whip up a PHP script that emulates the site but gives you more features, and you're good to go (for your own custom shop) - once you set your router to redirect all requests to a different server.
Since they are able to compare the contents before and after decryption, they shouldn't have a problem discovering how to make custom games signed. Personally, I would go through all the trouble just to show off a custom shop. - Edrick, on 04/18/2008, -0/+14I like how no one had to create a PSX emulator for the PSP...Sony did it for us.
- teamr, on 04/18/2008, -11/+25It wasnt too long ago Nintendo was leading the fight against emulation. Now they're selling roms for 5 bucks a pop. Thats the way the world turns, i guess
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+14They aren't analog? Learn something new every day. Thanks, Admiral Obvious!
- hadak, on 04/18/2008, -0/+14Smurfs.
- allengeer, on 04/18/2008, -1/+15yea, i'm trying to figure out why this is news? do you people think they rewrote these games? or wouldn't it just be smarter to write an emulator and not ***** with the game at all.. .yes yes it would... nice try, but you people lose.
- dinostabOMG, on 04/18/2008, -0/+14Well, what did you expect?
- tacojohn48, on 04/18/2008, -5/+18If they didn't protect their intellectual property they would have risked losing the copyright on it.
- Upsizer, on 04/18/2008, -1/+14I agree, using word documents would have been a much better idea.
- juicebag, on 04/18/2008, -1/+14It looks far prettier. You get to use AA, AF, and HD resolutions.
- Darkswarm, on 04/18/2008, -1/+14They fought against illegal copying of their games. Just because it's still in ROM form doesn't mean it's the same thing. Nintendo HAS the right to produce copies of their games. I know you were trying to be funny, but it failed. Sorry.
