- EnderMB, on 01/08/2008, -0/+37A manager sold me one when they came out, saying that they'd never catch on and Nintendo were as good as dead.
Oddly enough, the store's closed down - airwalkery2k, on 01/08/2008, -0/+30And I got mine for $249.99 plus tax.
I preferred instead to wait and hunt mine down rather than support video game scalpers on the internet who were competing with me on Wii shipment days. - falstaff, on 01/08/2008, -0/+19http://www.lofi-gaming.org.uk/nespc/pics/nes01.jpg Excited now?
- moo113, on 01/08/2008, -7/+19I wonder if I should feel bad that I found a Wii in EB Games one day and sold it during that "hype"...
Nah. - PrototypeV, on 01/08/2008, -5/+15When I skimmed over the page I thought this read "Nintendo Topless". This isn't as exciting.
- jacksons98, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9I hate to point out the obvious, but the closer it gets to Christmas the more people realize that they can't count on it arriving before Christmas. Who's going to pay top dollar on ebay only for it to arrive after the big day?
- AF-Geek, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8I don't think the Nintendo speech had anything to do with the changing prices.
To me, the graph in the article just shows consumer interest, or "demand". The "supply" of Wiis stayed pretty much the same, so the price varied. About a month before Christmas, consumers started worrying about getting a Wii for their loved ones. This demand peaked a week before Christmas. This was also when the supply of Wiis on eBay surged, dropping the price. The demand then dropped off as people gave up, or found another source.
Nice theory, well researched and documented. I just see the statistics differently. - BeKaws, on 01/08/2008, -10/+16Bought mine on Amazon thanks to this
http://www.nowinstock.net/wii/index.php - rdoger6424, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6That's what he just said :D
- scabbers, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Or that you're a sucker making someone else rich, whichever.
- PolarZoe, on 01/08/2008, -5/+10I bought mine right after it was released, told some dude his manager told me the Wii's in the back were for me and he gave them to me :)
- Flummoxer, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7That we live in a capitalist society.
- Crossmenjeff, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6um, they're still making like 50 bucks plus "shipping" on those things... thwarted isn't the best word, more like.... dented.
- SLockhart, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Reported as offensive.
- reichec, on 01/08/2008, -0/+31 hour 45 minutes from deciding to stand in line (~3:30pm) to walking out the door with Wii in hand at the World store on Nov 19th.
- scabbers, on 01/08/2008, -3/+6I'm not sure what kind of lesson you're giving a kid if you give in to scalpers.
- TheRealDj, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Seriously, 400 dollars for a wii? Doesn't that destroy the whole point of it being an "affordable" console.
- daveisfera, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Or maybe it just dropped off because they couldn't get shipped to them before Christmas?
- 1oman, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3I went to gamestop, they don't take pre-orders... I suspect some of the employees took all of them and sell them on ebay. am I right?
- retral, on 01/08/2008, -2/+4The fact that the christmas rush was done most likely had more of an influence on ebay wii prices than the "rain check" program...
I'm kind of astonished that Wii's are still in short supply well over a year after the original release date. - solidsnake1298, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3I work at BestBuy and employees weren't allowed to buy Wii's at BestBuy for 1 month. During the first week I went to EB Games during my lunch break (this was the monday or tuesday after the Wii launch and I took my lunch around 11am) and walked into the store, which was empty by the way, and asked the guy "do you have any Wii's" to which he replies by bending over and picking up a Wii "here you go". I hand over my credit card, and now I have a Wii. No lines, no wait, got it in the first couple days of its launch.
- Thekirby45, on 01/08/2008, -2/+4Heh got mine at newegg for 250 on Dec 28. people just need to be patient
- ccanni1028, on 01/08/2008, -1/+314 hours.
- SubaruPowah, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Not quite sure why, but I thought it read 'nintendo topless wii grey market', at first.
Maybe from correlation with the earlier topless wii topic? - barc0001, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Mod parent up. That's exactly it. The sales drop at the point where arrival by Xmas can't be guaranteed any more. Correlation != causation.
- zerhynn, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Don't use ebay. I got mine on craigslist for 250$, and it came with a lot more than just wiisports back in the peak of salesprices for the Wii.
- Nossie, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2Why? when even Nintendo didn't know if they had a hit or miss on their hands? would you lease more manufacturing space on a big 'maybe' after the ups and downs of the gamecube?
- zhulien, on 01/08/2008, -2/+3I just walked into KMart on the 24 Dec 2006 and bought one, I dont' know what the problem was...
- Coffeedemon, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2I felt bad boxing day morning that I did NOT buy one and sell it when I could have had one in October. Could have had several hundred towards a new lens for the camera.
- Yeknom, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Costco had a bunch at launch. I'm suprised no one went there...
- BrendanM14, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1if Nintendo "torpedoed" the Grey Market wouldn't prices be more towards MSRP? $100 profit is still profit to me.
- thesonofdarwin, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Not sure why you are being dugg down except maybe irrelevance. I bought three because of that site and quick fingers. One for myself, step-sister, and niece/nephew before the angry without crowd start foaming.
- rdoger6424, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1got a neighbor/toys R us employee to hook me up
- dadioflex, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1And if he did he should probably be tagged and tracked, just in case.
- CannedMango, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1I came here to post the same thing.
Look at the second chart. The sales peak on Dec 17th. A week before Christmas... yes. Um, who's going to buy a Christmas present off of eBay less than a week before Christmas? Not many. But yeah, Reggie did it. - Arkz, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1lol you crazy folks, preordered mine online and got it launch day morning, all i had to do was open my door to get it, no hanging around outside a shop
- smackafiyah, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I usually get my alerts sent to my phone from wiialert.com, but its been quiet for the past month, might try this site as a backup
- FAHQKR3W, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0interesting very interesting
- badg, on 01/10/2008, -0/+0Interesting......
- MillenniumX, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0The scary thing is, that IS more towards the MSRP than what they were going for before.
- Poggins, on 01/09/2008, -0/+0Nintendo does not equal Mario.
- MacPh1st0, on 01/08/2008, -0/+0I went to the Best Buy here on the Sunday a week after launch since they get their Wii shipments on Saturday nights and sell them the first thing when they open on Sunday mornings. I got there a half hour before they opened at 10am and ended up 9th in line out of 25 Wiis sold that morning. But with each subsequent week that followed as it got closer to Christmas, they became more and more impossible to find in stores.
- SLockhart, on 01/08/2008, -3/+2No you didn't.
- WhoDoneIt, on 01/08/2008, -3/+2I too happened onto one in Walmart about 2 weeks before Christmas. I was there on a Friday night about 7pm and I happened to see a guy walking over to the cash register with one in arm. I looked over at the display case and they had 2 left. Didn't even hesitate as I picked up one. Since I already had one I put it on Craigslist and was asking $400 for it. I sold it that very night for asking price. Since I'm in Canada and with taxes it came to $305, I don't quite consider that "raping" someone for the system because they are in high demand. The way I look at it I was saving someone time wandering around, aimlessly looking for one. I even drove it to their house and hand delivered it. I certainly wasn't trying to be greedy. I should also note that I spent $430 the day after it released for mine on Craigslist. So all is fair. :)
- rgautier, on 01/08/2008, -3/+1Fail to see an adequate causality association in the graph. Inaccurate to assume that single event caused decline when actual decline began before event. I give it a C-
- mattwalton56, on 01/08/2008, -5/+2*****
- Nossie, on 01/08/2008, -6/+2Matt ... Matt Walton is that you?
- cyberscape2, on 01/08/2008, -5/+1Heh. $200.
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -6/+2agreed screw the scalpers. If you get bored, knock up a phoney ebay account and bid like mad on all Wii's.
I have a hard time believing anywhere could be understocked with Wii's, they are easily available in Australia. - bightchee, on 01/08/2008, -7/+2I feel bad knowing my sister got hers at the height of its going price. If I had been clever I would have bought a second Wii for her kids when I got mine February of last year.
