- IznastY, on 06/17/2009, -3/+46I didn't know nintendo was a computer/phone producer? What the hell do they have to anwser to apple for. Comparing Apple to oranges here.
- bixby1, on 06/17/2009, -1/+33On the calculator, if you divide by zero, Mario gets the princess.
- excalsoft, on 06/17/2009, -5/+30Please. The only way DSiWare could be Nintendo's "answer" to the iPhone App Store would be if Nintendo were at all threatened by the presence of the iPhone.
- cubicledrone, on 06/17/2009, -2/+20The only path to success in business is to relentlessly copy other companies and their ideas, apparently. Of course, I'm forced to wonder if every electronic storefront is going to be labeled "the answer to the App store" as if Apple invented the entire concept of selling stuff on the Interwebs.
- KaivenTor, on 06/17/2009, -2/+16@MikeWesten: Yeah, but have you seen what a good plumber makes per year? There's a reason Mario and Luigi are hitting up all those gold coins chasing after the princess.
- mharroun, on 06/17/2009, -1/+12Uhhhhhh.... steam?
- Koushiro, on 06/17/2009, -1/+9Looks like a solid start for things. Hopefully we'll see a bit more functionality for the DSi.
Don't really see it competing with the iPhone since well...it isn't a phone. - gordigor, on 06/17/2009, -2/+9What is a real compelling reason to upgrade to DSi?
- mabba18, on 06/17/2009, -1/+7The point is, you still have FOUR DSs.
The big N has nothing to worry about with customers like you out there. - Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+5They'd make even more money selling them on the DSiware store.
Plus, those games play best with actual buttons, you know. - Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+5The PSP all but lost. Sony is ironically the one doing the most damage to it.
And the iPhone is not a gaming platform any more than Windows Mobile or Palm OS are. - KaivenTor, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5I want to see a (free) desktop widget version of the Mario calculator.
- Khast, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5To be completely fair in saying that the service is worthless, it is still in it's infancy. Granted the little apps are useless, and some of the games suck horribly, and there isn't much choice....
However, being as the service is so new, of course there isn't going to be much of a choice. And since it is new, I don't expect anything great until companies get used to programming for the new hardware. (There was a lot of changes from the DS...more than double the processor speed, and the cameras...)
I really hope Nintendo puts some retro games into the DSi store...much like the virtual console, I'd love to see some NES, SNES, and maybe some revamped Gameboy (classic) games. - Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+4Wii's Virtual Console store was developed long before Apple's App Store. The DSi store is just an extension of the Wii store. It's not an answer to Apple's anything.
- CamoChris, on 06/17/2009, -2/+6I thought the writing was pretty poor overall. The 'review' of Real Soccer was quite unprofessional, it sounded like he only played it for a couple of minutes, thought "I don't like this sport", then turned it off and moved on. He didn't even say what teams are in the game, what game modes there are or anything useful, he just projected his quite ignorant view of "soccer".
- unrealmp3, on 06/17/2009, -1/+5Meh, Nintendo is afraid of any online capabilities. They are just going into it because their customers want to.
- secondwheel2, on 06/18/2009, -2/+5I'm no Nintendo lover, but isn't it cheaper than the original DS. Also what if you don't already have a DS?
- LaffyTaffy3, on 06/17/2009, -2/+5Am I the only one who actually really likes Real Soccer 09? I haven't played multiplayer yet, but that seems like it would make it even more fun.
- deadguysleeps, on 06/18/2009, -1/+4"...as you won't have to worry about accidentally downloading controversial trash like "Baby Shaker" "
how do you "accidentally" download it? - reyoo30309, on 06/18/2009, -0/+3"Hi-phone?"
"What is this Hi-phone?" - Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Well, you *would* look pretty douchey pulling out your iPhone in a business meeting... as all your business colleagues with their Blackberries laugh at you.
- Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Mario & Luigi are not Joe the Plumberâ„¢
- fragMasterFlash, on 06/17/2009, -3/+5Is Nintendo opening up their app store to third party developers or sticking with the major studios? The real power of the iPhone app store is that even small development teams can hawk their wares.
- Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2A lot of WiiWare and DSiware comes from indie games studios.
- TheTjalian, on 06/18/2009, -1/+3So far, the PSP hasn't lost, and is actually doing really well. Same with the iPhone.
- Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2^ This. I was wondering why a response lkike this took this long to appear.
Obviously, this article was written by Apple fanboys, not Nintendo fanboys. Nintendo has absolutely NOTHING to fear from the iPhone and its App Store (and it's terrible, gimmicky games catalog).
Like I've said before... a single phone on a single overpriced cell carrier does not a gaming platform make. - inactive, on 06/17/2009, -2/+3I just wish nintendo would also put thier old school games on the itunes app store (super mario 1, 2, 3, yohsi's island, donkey kong), imagine how much money they could make with all those ipod touch/iphone users out there
- MScrip, on 06/17/2009, -1/+2... because other companies made app stores and customers said "oh this is cool." And the apps and games on the iPhone are free or cheap enough.
Every internet-connected game console today should have already had an app store. Apple just made it popular. - doshindude, on 06/18/2009, -2/+3No. Anyone who buys a DSi in the first place should know up front that they were duped into buying a pointless upgrade to the DS.
- SaxophoneGOD, on 06/17/2009, -1/+2I got a DSi for my birthday and I was estatic. I presummed that options of downloadable gameboy/gamegear games ready AT LAUNCH from the download store much like it's Wii store counterpart offers endless ammounts of retro games. Alas I have been very disapointed so far, awaiting each week for something worthy of my DS dollars. 2 months later...I'm still disapointed.
- Soleanthia, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1That will be 1,000 points.
- SteveMax, on 06/17/2009, -1/+2If you have an r4 you should get a new chip anyway.
- reyoo30309, on 06/18/2009, -1/+2You can use it as a phone?!
- Elranzer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1You don't get a new R4. You get a new Slot-1 device in general. For good reason... the R4 stopped being the best Slot-1 device about 3 years ago. It doesn't even have SDHC support.
Only on Digg is "R4" synonymous with "Slot-1 pirating/homebrew device" for the DS. - hatdrop, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1i'd say the PSP is still kicking pretty strong in fact. sony finally decided to pull a lot more support for the console given it's E3 announcements. Little Big Planet and Gran Turismo seem to be custom tailored to a mobile environment as well as functionality with the PSN in terms of multiplayer interaction. while everyone knows graphics don't make a game, i was just astounded at how nice games are looking, all the newer titles look just as detailed as Crisis Core and God of War. in addition i think they announced they were dropping the price of their dev kits by 80%, while i'd rather see actual support for the homebrew programmers, i feel it does represent some sort of concession even though it is pretty late in the game.
i do love my DS, it's got a lot of great RPGs and had some really innovative titles on release, like Trauma Center and Cooking Mama, but as of recently there seems to be loads of shovel ware. in terms of the DSi and the PSP Go I don't think either has given me a compelling reason to upgrade, but they're both pretty good if you don't have either of the previous models. - mr138, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1More like a huge number of their consumers (Japanese people), don't play console games online. A lot of them still access the internet from hubs.
- rlk89, on 09/14/2009, -0/+1Just what I was Thinking. I hate when the description on digg don't match the tone of the article.
- hakamanakus, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1The same way I accidentally downloaded 40 gigs of porn, duh!
- mr138, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1I could have sworn the iphone and dsi were two completely different products, and appealed to two completely different segments.
Btw, Wiiware came out first, and a hell of a lot more people own a ds then an iphone, "Nintendo's answer to apple?" lolocaust.
Buried as stupid, ***** idiotic and moronic. - Recoil, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1I like how the title has the word "Cash" in it, someone needs a dictionary.
- CrazySpaniard, on 06/18/2009, -1/+1I ***** love that game
the AI pisses me off though, and I don't want it to auto switch my character every time anyone passes the ball, but aside from that it kicks ass - GlassAgate, on 06/18/2009, -2/+2Many have tried to compete against Nintendo's handhelds. All have
lost. Let's see:
Sega Game Gear
Sega Nomad
NEC Turbo Graphix Express
Tiger.com
Atari Lynx
Tapwave Zodiac
Neo Geo Pocket Color
Did I miss any? - PsychOH, on 06/21/2009, -0/+0when the DSi first came out honestly i didn't feel like switching from my perfectly fine onyx DSlite to the "updated" version of it that just gave it a few new capabilities and two cameras but with this whole app thing it may become worth it, right now i don't think it is because they haven't really hit its full potential, but when they do trading my DSlite for a DSi may be added to my to-do list.
- Rioracer916, on 06/19/2009, -1/+1Then again a DS Lite is cheaper than either of the two devices you mentioned. Nintendo has no plans to stop selling DS Lites for the time being.
- jromz03, on 06/18/2009, -3/+1I see the anecdotal 'I sold my DSi' posters and anti-nintendo brigade hasn't arrived yet.
- MacHarborGuy, on 06/18/2009, -3/+1the Wii store offered FAR LESS than an endless amount of retro games. There was probably no more than 20 titles, if that. The iPhone App Store is far more... OPEN to developers since it doesn't take much to get into the developer program, as opposed to the Wii Shop Channel which is far harder to get into with WiiWare titles.
People want to complain about Apple's approval process. How about we look at Nintendo? Even the 360 has the Creators Club with fairly lost cost games and apps. - HalcyonGT, on 06/18/2009, -4/+2DSi = the new Virtual Boy.
Initially given lots of hype and promise...only to have nothing but shovelware in the end. - SiN9Ty, on 07/31/2009, -4/+1Why would anyone upgrade to the dsi? Then you have to get a new r4. The dsi makes no sense.
Mario calculator thats a joke right. I got ti-83 on my ds. - solid12345, on 06/17/2009, -7/+3I'm sure I would look really cool and professional whipping out my Nintendo DS in a business meeting
