"Some of the most obvious and frustrating comeback AI that we've ever experienced in a game. The bottom line is you don't want to lose a game when you feel like you've done nothing wrong, and that happens way too often in Mario Kart Wii." - skywake, on 04/21/2008, -5/+26IGN Reviews of Mario Kart games
Mario Kart 64: 81%... 79% on VC
Mario Kart Super Circuit: 95%
Double Dash: 79%
Mario Kart DS: 95%
Mario Kart Wii: 85%
I got MKDS with the thought that I would enjoy playing games of Kart against random real people and I would have the ability to play against friends online. The reality was non-fun random matches due to snaking/players leaving/***** and scarce online friend matches due to the difficulty of organising games. In the end I just took MKDS with me wherever I went and had games with my friends that way. From the sounds of it MKWii has made online work and if the single player isn't as great as MKDS then I couldn't care less. - savethemooses, on 04/21/2008, -9/+29Buried for not being a guy asking a girl to prom.
- alibanana, on 04/21/2008, -2/+21Having spent literally 4 and a half hours in a row yesterday playing local multiplayer (i live in the UK) I can confirm that it's about the most fun i've had with my Wii since its release (Smash Bros isn't out here).
- imikedaman, on 04/21/2008, -0/+15Double Dash got a 7.9, so the subtitle is basically bringing up the topic of how Mario Kart Wii compares to the last console iteration.
- RiMac, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15Damn the blue shells!
- starkes, on 04/21/2008, -3/+16the online works really well. its fast about everything and takes care of it all for you. nothing like brawl's garbage system.
- keozen, on 04/21/2008, -0/+11Well, I've had my copy over a week now and I'm still playing it to death. Fun as all hell & I agree with the review that the Rainbow Road track on this one is the best yet.
- innocentsinner, on 04/21/2008, -1/+12Are my friends and I the only ones who loved Double Dash? I'm gonna miss the co-op driving :(
- Beatlemaniac, on 04/21/2008, -3/+13I like how they say it's the best console cart racers in years. Because all the other console cart racers are so damn good.
- SpectreFire, on 04/21/2008, -1/+10Goddamn comeback AI. Peach can go ***** herself.
- vondrak, on 04/21/2008, -2/+11I was so excited for this game, but I suddenly have this feeling it will be a let down.
"In single player you can use only your license Mii, but in multi any console character is up for grabs – and can race on 10 total tracks"
Does this mean there are only 10 multiplayer tracks? Or that you can only use miis for 10 out of 32 tracks?
"There are still a few gripes though, including the lack of four-player free-for-all battles "
How does free for all battles differ from Battle mode?
If the online has improved as much as they say, there better be a way to invite people to play online while they are playing single player. In smash brothers you need to basically be waiting in the online menu until everyone shows up. Atrocious. - LOLIGATOR, on 04/21/2008, -3/+11it's a shame that this and gta iv are coming out around the same time. i think that's going to hurt sales, at least initially. i'm putting mario kart on hold for now.
- Rosamilia, on 04/21/2008, -2/+10How does this not score 10/10 on replayability?? I can't think of another feature that could be added to enhance a racing game's lasting appeal
I'm a huuge MKDS fan and I only scratch my head at the lower lasting appeal score on a game that promises a lot more in the replayability area (and according to the review, delivers what it promises) - HoppingRabbit, on 04/21/2008, -0/+7I think that Mario Kart Wii appeals to all players, hardcore and casual because of the retro tracks and how intense it can get online.
- KingGoonie, on 04/21/2008, -2/+9Agreed, that you have to go to the wifi then to see if your friends are on to play them... Its stupid. Because I will go on, check there, see no ones there, log off the wifi (if I don't feel like playing anyone) Now 2 seconds later my friend or nephew or whatever may come on, and check to see if I'm on... but having just signed out of the wifi 2 seconds before then he will not see me... even if I'm playing single player. Its stupid.
- revid_ffum, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7Oh STFU, do you compare everything to the worlds major problems? Lighten up douche.
- magiclava, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6I've had MKwii for a week now and can confirm that its probably the best MK out there. I had the original SNES MK when it came out and loved it (I still don't know why they left the coins out of subsequent games).
I had MK64 which i didn't love... dunno why, i just lost 'something'.
I've got MKDS and loved that until everyone started snaking which made the on-line game impossible to play.
MKwii online is brilliant, and amazingly quick finding suitable players to race against. Yes its frustrating to be leading the race only for a bomb to drop you back to 8th! Its also a good job Nintendo didn't allow communication, because some of the words that came out of my mouth are probably illegal in several countries.
Anyway i'd give MKwii 9/10... - HoppingRabbit, on 04/21/2008, -1/+6I don't know, I've played the game a ton both online and offline and the 150cc isn't that hard as long as pick a good vehicle and know the tracks well.
- ButchersBoy, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5Sorry to all the haters out there but this game rocks. My favourite since the SNES version.
- rodrigo74, on 04/21/2008, -1/+6Someone that buys a _Nintendo_ Wii and then passes on Mario Kart (or Galaxy) probably shouldn't have bought the Wii in the first place, would be better off with a 360.
- innocentsinner, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5Yea, my friends and I call that "Pete Cheat Mode" because it always seems to be Piranha Pete who makes the miraculous comeback
- Jrr6415sun, on 04/21/2008, -3/+8dugg for not being a guy asking a girl to prom
- tensaibaka, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4There are a total of 32 multiplayer tracks, 64 if you count the mirror courses. You can play them all in online multiplayer, but it selects at random from everyones choices. I bought my copy last week here in Japan, and I've had online races with anywhere from 2-12 people. It depends on how many people are waiting for a race, and how many continue with you from the last race. And for online racing you can only use the characters that you have already unlocked.
- rodrigo74, on 04/21/2008, -0/+485% is a great grade on any account, you just got used to some sites giving 80% to games that deserved no more than 50%. People should get out of this "anything less than 90% is bad" mentality for game reviews.
- UGM2099, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5Same here, I would get MarioKart at launch guaranteed, but I know GTAIV will eat up all my time. See you in June, MarioKart!
- luckyguy2000, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5double dash rocked. and looks as good as this one imho.
- DMDekoth, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4Unless you're in North America or Australia, of course.
- SketchaMPM, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5I'm shocked that co-op Grand Prix is gone. Why in the hell would they remove that?
- rodrigo74, on 04/21/2008, -2/+6I've played it for hours and hours yesterday, it is extremely fun. Yes it is annoying to arrive at 9th after leading the whole race and doing nothing wrong because of a sequence of bombs thrown at you, but this is not Need for Speed, it's Mario Kart, so the chaos makes part of the formula. It's OK as long as you're not paranoid about your high-score standings or whatever.
I like that the vehicles are a bit more balanced than in the DS version; in that platform there are a couple of cars that are invincible, I haven't experienced this on the Wii version so far. There seems to be a slight advantage for the motorbikes (due to the wheelies) but the boost they get is not that huge.
I would love to have more "wow" graphics though, at least for the Wii standards, but I suppose it's quite a push for that little console to handle so many people racing at the same time. - rodrigo74, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5if you leave home for a change, you might notice it's already there ;)
- quelcertoleo, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5Could care less about the review score, this game is pure fun.
The only thing I really don't like is the mix bikes/karts online, it would be way better to have the opportunity to choose wether you want mixed races or bikes only / karts only. Also I think there are way too much bonuses, sometimes you can't really have fun because every 10 seconds there's a shell coming, a POW and so on.
A must have anyway, online racing is so fun. - AuburnTigers, on 04/21/2008, -1/+5How dare you.

Mario Kart Wii US Review
8.5
Mario Kart Wii UK Review
8.9
??????????????
In other news okami got a 9.0 and gtaiv got a 9.4?. - monkeyrun, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3lol the 150 cc looks almost impossible.
- ogisdan, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3They only say that happens for the 150cc races. /
- AmazingAndrex, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3The 10 tracks they mention are battle tracks for Balloon Battle and Shine Runners.
32 racing tracks, 10 battle tracks - Del129, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3Since when has 8.5 been a bad review score?
- Slayerdude51982, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2If you watch the video, you see Roselia from SMG, I knew as soon as I saw that they had a new character they were gonna start shoving her into games, which isn't bad but whatever, it gives us another female character which is nice
- knetworx, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2I have yet to play a DS game on wifi, but back in college (I just graduated last year), there was a whole group of us who played MKDS in the breakroom at lunch. That was a hell of a lot of fun.
- keozen, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2To unlock her as a racer in MK Wii btw ****SPOILER***:
Make sure you have a Mario Galaxy save game on your Wii, after a few plays of the game she will unlock herself. So, if you don't have Mario Galaxy (firstly why the hell not) either go out and buy it or borrow a friends just to give you that savegame file. - mrgreen4242, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2What games are you playing? Granted I just got a Wii, so I'm sure the novelty of Wii Sports will wear off soon but I'm having lots of fun with other titles like Zack and Wiki, MLB Power Pros, played just a few minutes of Zelda, but it looks like it could be very fun. In any case, if you haven't played it yet, get Zack and Wiki and you'll get another 20-30 hours out of your Wii... and it should get you excited for the Sam and Max season 1 compilation coming out later this year!
- RoboDigger, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2good pt. you should play the UK version. it got a 89% from ign's flawed system.
- Andrwmorph, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2He was in double dash and the same thing would happen
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2pointless remark
- nuketrap, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I never said that fans of the franchise and hardcore Mario Kart players wouldn't play it, just in the last couple months we have sold stacks of Wii's (100's) and a lot of Mario Kart Wii pre-orders to go with them. Doing the normal retail talk a lot of the new console owners really have never played consoles befores, all the fans of Mario Kart pretty much bought the Wii when it was launched to get Zelda. But with this said with the new console owners playing this game for the first time they won't know how good it is compared to the others. I'm not saying it isn't good I actually have played it and liked it, I just prefer the older ones as they feel like real Mario Kart, hopefully you get what I mean. But I am not sure if you will agree with me on this but I am sure you know EA Games owns a lot of the market and as a result there is a flood of really average games - there are some really good ones dont get me wrong - and as a result kids that buy these games aren't aware of the absolute awesomeness of the old games and as a result are used to semi-decent games. I know this as an avid gamer as well as a sales assistant who sells games as a job and is aware of market trends. I never hear people coming up and asking for Metal Gear Solid 3 or Timesplitters 2, more of than not its usually a Need for Speed or a Fifa
- mrgreen4242, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2DD was a blast multiplayer. Sure, the single player mode was just so-so, but it was one of the best multiplayer games, for any system, of the previous generation.
- kevyn, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I loved DD - and 2 players in 1 kart was awesome...with some good teamwork you could really piss all over the opposition
- mrgreen4242, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1That's really true... what other kart racer is that, period?
- kevyn, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1thanks for that info - I guess I'll have to get galaxy now then so I can have all the racers
