Help Make it Happen: Miyamoto Nominated Again for Time 100
nintendowiifanboy.com — It's that time of year again, folks -- the point at which we implore you to help us shamelessly rig an internet poll so that Nintendo design guru and all-round hero Shigeru Miyamoto can climb as high as possible in Time magazine's list of the year's most influential people.

- Diggtatorship, on 04/12/2008, -5/+48Shigeru Miyamoto basically raised me. Everyone else pales in comparison.
- techmaster, on 04/12/2008, -13/+1Yeah but what has he done this year? For him to be considered even remotely influential this year, wouldn't Nintendo at least have to release a game worth playing... I dunno, say some time this year? 1987 is long gone.
- tbob19, on 04/12/2008, -0/+14Still can't find that Wii, eh?
- xyno512, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0Miyamoto was all that i wanted to be as a child, and now that I'm starting my college career, he has become a major influence my future career choice. Kudos to Miyamoto again! You deserve it.
- goldenhearted, on 04/12/2008, -5/+33Shigeru Miyamoto's Super Mario Bros. is the reason why I'm right here, playing video games. The medium has become a part of me that I owe him for bringing me in to the video gaming world that brought me nearly two decades of entertaining experiences like Mario, Zelda, MGS, Final Fantasy, Duck Hunt, Commander Keen, Starcraft, BioShock, GTA, Pokemon, Portal, Halo, Doom, Half-Life, KOTOR, Diablo, and other games I've enjoyed through the years.
With that said, Miyamoto deserves it. His influence in the industry is undeniably grand and his acclaim should sustain for as long as it can for new generations of gamers to learn that they wouldn't be playing their favorites games if it wasn't for the NES and Super Mario Bros.- Ngamer01, on 04/12/2008, -6/+6Agreed. Without Miyamoto, there'd be no video games today. The man deserves to be in the top 25 or higher this year.
- imikedaman, on 04/12/2008, -4/+4If he should be in the top 25 most influential people for this year, it should be for something influential he did this year. As great as I'm sure Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit are, have they actually influenced anything yet?
- Ngamer01, on 04/12/2008, -6/+6Agreed. Without Miyamoto, there'd be no video games today. The man deserves to be in the top 25 or higher this year.
- Topher06, on 04/12/2008, -26/+6How about we be realistic here and say that if the award should go to someone for design, Miyamoto hasn't designed anything new in 20 years. Don't list a bunch of great games and say this guy was responsible for or inspired them. You didn't play those games because of how good SMB was. Had you been born 5 years later and missed the NES days, you would still be playing those games. The guy came up with Mario and Zelda and he has been flogging those franchises for over 20 years without shame or humility. He renders Mario and Zelda in 3D for the Wii and we expect to give him an award for it?
Don't get me wrong, the guy is responsible for some of the most memorable games in history, but that is the key word here, HISTORY. Nintendo's entire Wii strategy is to bank of its history and introduce games that are nostalgic in content and gameplay which produces huge sales no doubt, but I can't respect. Nintendo created a myth, and that is that the Wii will bring back the great days of yore when the NES and SNES were the hottest game systems around and nobody could touch Nintendo for introducing innovative gameplay and lasting characters. But Nintendo and Miyamoto haven't had one ORIGINAL creative thought in game design for 20 years. They have taken their memorable franchises and morphed them to follow the trends of gaming established by other designers and companies. Metroid Prime took Samus into the FPS realm a decade after Doom. Zelda and Mario made the inevitable transition into 3D because Sony introduced hardware that made 3D gaming a reality in console land. Nintendo has been playing catch up since the N64 days.
Also I credit this guy for destroying the franchises he helped to create. He seems insistent on catering to the pre-teen and junior crowd by making each new generation of his franchises even more sickly cute and inane then the last. Adults young and old have to choke back ridiculous stories and plots centered around exaggerated fairy tale concepts to even enjoy the rehashes of Zelda and Mario. The Wii was supposed to be a platform for all ages, all ages between 3 and 13 that is.
I can't deny that Nintendo found some formula for printing their own money, the Wii is a huge seller and these rehashed franchise games are selling millions. But there is a definite empty feeling about all this success. Most people I know that have a Wii haven't turned it on in months. The Wii is a novelty promoting a gimmick and relying on nostalgia to sell. Its a disappointment because Nintendo isn't commited to creating innovative and NEW games, just banking off of the good ideas they once had.- skywake, on 04/12/2008, -2/+31What makes you any less of a fanboy then those who love what Nintendo is doing and has done? Together Miyamoto and Iwata are responsible for a lot more then you give them credit for. It might have been the early 1980's when Miyamoto came up with "Jumpman" but its a bit of a stretch to say that there has been no innovation between original Donkey Kong and Super Mario Galaxy. Sure he is sticking with Mario because it is still a profitable brand but I wouldn't call them the same games.
Look at that PS3/360 controller in your hands, where did the button layout come from? who came up with the shoulder buttons? what about the analogue sticks? rumble? You claim that Nintendo is for the "pre-teen" crowd but what about the non-gaming crowd? I know personally that when Halo just came out me and my friends used to play it for hours on end but it was always just me and my friends. When I threw in the Super Mario Galaxy disk EVERYONE wanted to play 8-86. I know the same is the case on some level with Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Wii Sports and Wii Fit and Zelda.... its a universal truth. Is that not innovation? Is that not progressive enough for you? - AwesomeMonster, on 04/12/2008, -1/+163d gaming had already been on the snes with the superfx chip. Also, any adult mature enough to see past blood and gore knows that the nintendo first party library is the most strong line up out of any company. Who cares if they have the same characters if they are consistently FUN. Lastly, all because Mario doesn't chainsaw people in half doesn't mean you can't play the game an enjoy it. In fact, any adult should be able to see that half of the M games out there are only so violent so they appeal to the pre-teen crowd.
- BlueSkyfish, on 04/12/2008, -0/+12learn2history. He brought the videogame industry back after it crashed in the early 80's. He has influence on the ENTIRE INdustry, not just Nintendo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Miyamoto - Zpanzer, on 04/12/2008, -7/+0I will go as far as to agree with you, and I'm gonna get dugg down for this.
I am 17 years old and I missed the NES and SNES times, so I can't look back and say that I was thank full for he invented those games that kept my old days going. Sure Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda etc. are all great games, but I'm getting fed up with the constant reincarnations of them in all the games Nintendo has been realizing for so long time I can remember back. Funny though is that when another game publisher uses the same tactic they get flamed by the entire community yelling that they don't get any new ideas, neither does Nintendo in my opinion.
I'm so tired seeing the same characters over, over, over and over again in the same game with the same kind of gameplay that might only introduce 1-2 things that are new the former games. At this points it doesn't matter what Nintendo releases, all will buy it.
*prepares for getting dugg down*- skywake, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2I thought the same thing when I was 17. When I was about 14 I put down my Gameboy and retired my SNES games because I "was sick of Nintendo games". The reality was that I just wanted to fit in and that Nintendo wasn't "cool". A few years ago one of my friends had a DS and Mario 64 and I didn't take any notice. I didn't even know that Nintendo had released a new handheld. About a year later the same group of friends had Mario Kart DS and it looked pretty damn fun. So I did a bit of research and found out what the DS was and what MKDS was.
A few months later I picked up a DS lite and MKDS. BEST FUN I HAVE HAD IN YEARS. It took the maturity to realise that I didn't need to play the games that everyone else was playing to be "cool" to get back into Nintendo. Sure, some of my friends ridiculed me for it, some of my friends got PSPs instead but now EVERYONE has a DS. - dancercotillion, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1There's a difference, I feel, between the way Nintendo makes new versions of a franchise and the way, say, Insomniac makes a new version of one of their franchises.
Look at Mario. Every Mario game features something totally new to the franchise for mechanics. First he could jump, throw fireballs, and make sparklies. Then, he could throw radishes. Suddenly, Mario could fly! Mario went 3d, became metal, and grew a life gauge. Mario became a terrific acrobat who combated the evils of grafitti as a relaxing vacation from stomping on mushrooms. Now, he's a spaceman who goes from planet to planet, squashing evil.
Compare this to Ratchet & Clank, where the only differences from game to game are what guns are available and how hardcore-looking Ratchet is this time. That's why people razz other companies for being unoriginal while salivating endlessly over Nintendo. Companies like Insomniac release the exact same game over and over, with only superficial upgrades to gameplay. (Sorry to razz on Insomniac so much; they were just the first company to come to mind. They make fun games, just incredibly repetitive.)

If the person with the most influence in your life is a guy who had a small hand in the actual creation of four video games during 2007 you must lead a pretty insignificant life.
- cran, on 04/12/2008, -3/+5The point of these things is not to convince you and all your friends to unfairly weight any one individual's visibility. Let them consider and choose and place everyone without having to deal with any particular group's preference being shouted into their ear.

- BlueSkyfish, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3http://kotaku.com/gaming/miyamoto-says/death-befor ...
- Mpwns, on 04/12/2008, -1/+6he should time's person of the year sure there was video games before him. but ever since he made games you can find little parts of his work in almost every game now. with out mario64 theres no telling how games would be today. nintendo may not be at the top. but they still set the bar on new ideas that everyone copies. nintendo is really the only company out there willing to take risks with new ideas.
- R75700, on 04/12/2008, -0/+6the poll should be split into two categories. Those who influenced positively, and then those who have in a negative way. Then amazing men like Shigeru wouldn't have to compete with idiots like Madonna. Surely then he would be right up there
- Zzoram, on 04/12/2008, -2/+10Mass voting for Shiggy is good, but you have to mass vote down Rain too. He's got a 300,000 positive vote lead.
- wiizy, on 04/12/2008, -2/+2he deserves it and the wii is off to an incredible start.
- fancyj, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Half the people on that list should not be considered influential at all.
- killq, on 04/12/2008, -9/+0He is a little too gay to make the list.
- shoguner, on 04/12/2008, -3/+1i think the other 99 would be not worthy of Miyamoto being with them .
- Frozenfuryblade, on 04/13/2008, -1/+3I think the creator of Digg should be on this list. Completely serious. The instant this hit Popular on digg he jumped from 25 to 4.
- bibble13, on 04/13/2008, -5/+0Seriously, don't do this. If you succeed, you will irreparably damage the Internet's reputation as a trustworthy news source.
- SniperSlap, on 04/13/2008, -9/+1The Wii sucks, I don't ***** get it. Why is everyone so horny over this overpriced status icon? It's like a Mac, for console fanboys.
- cofingp, on 04/13/2008, -0/+6Yeah... No idea who Rain is.
- Yokai, on 04/13/2008, -3/+1Not until he forces Earthbound 2 (Mother 3) to be released in the United States...
I bought the wii thinking it was going to be amazing, but Zelda was the exact same as always. Metroid was crap controls and ***** boring plot. Mario Galaxy was old news, and was also already done before. Super Smash brother brawl was practically melee repackaged with a broken up story line with no diologue and it also had online play...... which was crappy. -
