They could have modded the level design completely different. However, they kept a similar level design for a good reason. That reason is too have the player familiar with something and then screw them over with some kind of trap like a hidden block.

I almost threw up my grape nuts watching him adapt, only to get screwed by silly, unpredictable things like the shooting flag pole or the random cloud drop. Ahh...a great satire on platform jumpers.
