- Braingoo, on 12/10/2007, -14/+429We will all be replaced by CPU bots eventually. I for one welcome our digital overlords.
- Tserk, on 12/10/2007, -5/+125It seems likely that with the way Nintendo does their online stuff, this feature will make it difficult to even know you are playing online.
- heartless_, on 12/10/2007, -3/+61I don't see how it won't work. Anything other than a "user has disconnected, you win" screen is a success in my book. The only part that concerns me is that you could be negatively affected by the actions of a bot.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/10/2007, -2/+59If they can manage to base the AI's skill level on how well the disconnected player was doing before being disconnected, then it might actually be fairly seamless.
- logicalnoise, on 12/10/2007, -1/+53I'd welcome this for some games. Like in rock band it's very common to ave some jackass quit early because he's losing in tug of war. What's bad is that I get a loss on my record(he does too but it's not in any way a fair deal). Of course I report anyone who does do stuff like that but being able to just play a bot representing their supposed skill would be more rewarding.
- Cyberbladewolf, on 12/10/2007, -2/+40I always got pissed off at Metroid Prime Hunters and Mario Kart because people disconnected. It took forever for people to connect to me, and then all they do is run off because they're losing. Really annoying. Add on top of that that everyone was cheating and it was really frustrating. Hopefully Sakurai has some way planned out to combat cheating. >_>
- Raerth, on 12/10/2007, -5/+36Not everyone reads the smashbros website religiously, sorry...
- mleh, on 12/10/2007, -1/+29Will these bots question my sexuality and make fun of my mother?
- blackmage439, on 12/10/2007, -3/+29Now, what happens when you start getting bots that are more highly skilled than the dropped players they replaced?
"Our n00b skills can't handle bots of that magnitude!" - Philbert, on 12/10/2007, -4/+27The Russian reversal joke never gets old.

- FredFredrickson, on 12/10/2007, -0/+20Well, with most other games, playing against a human provides a greater challenge, and a greater feeling of accomplishment when you win. With just about every game I've ever played, there's always some little flaw that you notice about the AI that you can take advantage of... like when you notice a pattern in the way the computer player move, or a moment in the game where the computer cannot ever defend itself. Human players don't usually exhibit this kind of behavior, or when they do, they change immediately when you start exploiting them.
So when you play against people, they present a greater variance of activity and play styles, and serve as a greater challenge for those who have mastered the AI. Plus you can talk trash to them. :D - teamparadox, on 12/10/2007, -1/+21its a good idea but honestly i would rather know if they left or not. so notify me and let me finish the match against ai but dont count it towards a rank. The game is still ruined no matter what, im not playing against a person and if i wanted to kick the ai's ass id play single.
- Moetownslick, on 12/10/2007, -0/+19good idea in theory....i'd also like to see someone develop the technology to log HOW a person quit the game...did they go through the button sequence to quit on purpose...or did they suddenly lose connection. of course, this doesn't take into account people who yank their ethernet cord intentionally....but its a start.
- badtzmartin, on 12/10/2007, -1/+20UNO on XBOX Live does this...
I sure wish Halo 3 would... - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+19In Soviet Russia, jokes laugh at you.
- ajim, on 12/10/2007, -14/+31In Soviet Russia, digital overlords welcome you!
- HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -4/+20Wow, awesome. So I'll have no control over who I'm connecting to, I won't be able to see who I'm connecting to, and I won't know if I'm playing against a bot or not? ***** awesome, sign me up.
- dmunkey, on 12/10/2007, -2/+18for you the purpose of playing online is to be screwed out of a game because some prick didnt like the game type and dropped out early? I welcome the changes and hope someday they come to Xbox Live
- so1omon, on 12/10/2007, -0/+14Good, make sure to include lots of duplicates. Its all about stuff being reposted until your mind is numb.
- Cdog923, on 12/10/2007, -1/+15No it doesn't. What it does is keep the flow of the game going if someone lags out or disconnects for whatever reason. I know we all love staring at the scoreboard in Halo when someone leaves, but this actually fixes it.
- Drakoola, on 12/10/2007, -0/+14I can see the headlines
Hacker Finds Out SSBB Has No Online, Only Bots - daveisfera, on 12/10/2007, -0/+14It's definitely better than just ending the match, but this is far from the amazing solution that they're making it out to be.
- RpgActioN, on 12/10/2007, -1/+13Why would MMOs do it? That just doesn't make sense.
But to answer your question, there are server settings for most first-person shooters to keep a minimum number of "players" in the game...Quake, UT, CS.... - sapo916, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12Good, make sure to include lots of duplicates. Its all about stuff being reposted until your mind is numb.
- ramenite, on 12/10/2007, -2/+14well, considering it's just all anonymous playing anyways what's the difference? You could replace ALL online play with bots, and people wouldn't know the difference anyways.
- teh_techie, on 12/10/2007, -0/+11Yours too?? WOAH!!!
- MxM111, on 12/10/2007, -1/+11Good, make sure to include lots of duplicates. Its all about stuff being reposted until your mind is numb.
- RunnyBabbit, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9Wow. Such an insightful and original comment makes me wish you had a-- Wait! You do have a website! I'm going to visit everyday!
- Langford, on 12/10/2007, -2/+11So whats worse, loosing a fight, or quitting and being replaced by a bot thats better than you are?
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -6/+14That point highlights exactly why I don't really bother with online play, especially on the Wii. What makes online play any more fun than playing against a computer character? You don't know your opponent either way, it's not like when you sit down with a friend and play.
But think about what online play will be like for this game. There is going to be no ranking, you can't see people's names unless they are friends, no chatting or communication of any sort, and your opponents are randomly assigned. What is going to make online play any more appealing for this game than playing alone? - Supernova36, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8I hope they start punishing for leaving early. In Mario Strikers it happens way too often..
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -3/+10they've no idea what "balanced" means.
obviously, they aren't online gamers. - whoamarcos, on 12/11/2007, -4/+11i remember MY first russian reversal.....
so many dead hookers - lebatte, on 12/10/2007, -3/+10Thanks for posting it days ago, eyefone. Ass.
- hipposaurus, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7Fair idea, though I don't like the mention that "With anyone" play will be matching you with people whom you can't even see the screen name of. I find a lot of the fun in online play is coming out of a funny match then later talking to friends about it, and how you absolutely destroyed cyb3rtr0n49494949. If you can't see who you're beating (or even losing against) though, it takes away from the fun.
I know in the past Nintendo has allowed you to see who you're competing against in DS games as well, so I don't see why they're changing this. - Shirt, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7It's really bad that they aren't going to notify you when they leave. If that's the case, how will you ever really know if you're playing a real person?
- elhaf, on 12/10/2007, -2/+8Great! Then it will be just like Microsoft Hearts.
- KaiUno, on 12/10/2007, -2/+8Yank? Cord? My Wii is wireless :p
- Elliuotatar, on 12/10/2007, -2/+8This is a terrible idea. I hate playing against bots. I actively avoid any Counterstrike or Team Fortress server which has bots. The whole fun of playing online is knowing you're outsmarting a human. There is far less joy in outsmarting a computer controlled player, and if that is the experience I wanted then I could just play offline.
Instead of resorting to bots, what they should do is simply have a chat room for people to meet up to play games with eachother, and in that chat room, display stats on how many games the other people have played, how many they've won. and most importantly, what percentage of games they've dropped out of. That way people would have an incentive to stay in games they're losing, lest their stats reflect that they leave 22% of the games they play before the game is complete. - exninjahunter, on 12/10/2007, -34/+40This is a great idea if it will work. Which is probably a no but hey they tried

- chedabob, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6If you give somebody negative feedback, it's almost certain that you won't get matched up with them again.
- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -0/+6Dugg down for the disgusting misspelling of "misuse".
- Elranzer, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Shhh! Don't remind them that the line actually came from The Simpsons. They want to think they were clever enough to make it up themselves (stolen from Slashdot who stole it from The Simpsons... back when it was good).
- Scira, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Why would anyone want to yank their wii?
- Exhaust, on 12/10/2007, -2/+7No way Nintendo would even consider chat rooms on their system. Hell they won't even release a freakin head set. All the bad people out on the intertubes will molest the poor innocent little kiddies! Oh my!
- MrFluffZ, on 12/11/2007, -1/+6C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!
