- irriadin, on 05/11/2009, -5/+336Typical Square Enix behavior. Well within their rights to do, but bad PR. Not to mention that this is essentially free publicity for Chrono Trigger.
- KeijiDragon, on 05/11/2009, -4/+276The only thought I'm having right now about this is that Square Enix is gonna get some majorly bad PR about this...
- Shogi, on 05/12/2009, -9/+265"HEY, these fans are making a sequel to our game and it looks pretty popular!"
"O rly? Shut em down and we'll make it ourselves!"
"But we're already working on ***** RPGs no one cares about!"
"Oh well, just shut them down. We'll come back to this after we delay FFXIII a few more times." - DuckSoup1, on 05/12/2009, -19/+261Hey guess what Square-Enix?
You will not see another dime out of me.
Go ***** yourself.
/Long live Chrono Trigger - punkideas, on 05/12/2009, -2/+205I'm eagerly awaiting a leak of this
- notyourbroom, on 05/12/2009, -0/+189BUT...
THE FUTURE REFUSED
TO CHANGE. - awtripp, on 05/12/2009, -1/+111There is no emoticon for what I am feeling!
- mywhitenoise, on 05/12/2009, -0/+109One of the words in your headline is 87.5% complete.
- JamesGrimlee, on 05/11/2009, -2/+109Expected, but disappointing all the same.
- CEAgent12, on 05/12/2009, -0/+105Hey I'm going to use Zeality's post here to be a little higher......I feel like I can do that because I was in charge of the project :) (you can check compendium front page I said I'd be posting on this SN). The game really was close to done there are a couple videos on crimsonechoes.com and some of our beta testers have videos they will be releasing shortly.
I promise everyone that amazing effort was put into this game to make it as professional as possible. It briged CT and Chrono Cross incredibly well, had multiple endings, several new techs and much much more. We hoped that the game would promote interest in the Chrono franchise and had nothing but respect for Squareso.....Enix.
Anyways, I have tried to open up a dialogue with Square to try to release the game but have basically been told it's not going to happen (they aren't optimistic). Of course I was talking to the bottom of the totem pole and have found no way to contact anyone directly.
We understand that square is totally within their right to do this (and even told them that in the readme, though that was for a demo that was released several years ago). I just really wish they would have stopped it 5 years ago. Several questions you may have are answered in my response on the compendiums front page or you can read the post directly here:
http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/t ...
If anyone has any questions, or advice that doesn't involve going to court please post them here. As mentioned in my response, this was a hobby for me, I'm not willing to be martyrd for it but countless hours were poured into this game. It was not done with ill intentions, we want to work with square, not against.
Thanks.......sorry for the long post. Again if you have any questions I'll try to respond.....
--JP - Leonffs, on 11/20/2009, -3/+100Just finish it and leak it.
- commenter01, on 05/12/2009, -1/+93lol.
also, abstinence works...
/s - Greengoo, on 05/12/2009, -1/+80Dugg so hard I broke my shovel.
- kiiwii, on 05/12/2009, -8/+80I don't believe you.
- CEAgent12, on 05/12/2009, -0/+67Actually you can probably just go to the front page.
http://www.chronocompendium.com - Doomsan, on 05/12/2009, -2/+68JUST LEAK IT! we'll remain silent.
- PKStarstorm, on 05/12/2009, -2/+65*facepalm*
That the game was nearly complete makes this even worse. - GregLoire, on 05/12/2009, -0/+59>:-0
- Equinox1, on 05/11/2009, -1/+59This is hardly a suprise.
- firesights, on 05/12/2009, -4/+62I'm quickly losing my respect and patience for Square.
Yes, please give us the same games over and over and over and over and over.
But something creative comes along... well we can't have that.
Sad to see Square is just another company that really doesn't care about it's fanbase. Of course, I pretty much knew that already, but this confirms it. Dugg. People need to see this. - pe5t1lence, on 05/12/2009, -0/+55Well, they said it was torn and sent to the four corners of the earth....
- eaduenez, on 05/12/2009, -4/+56This really really hit me! I am boycotting Square Enix because I am sick and tired of their arrogance, greed and disrespect for the fans that give them their cushy jobs. This is one of the many (MANY) fan-based games they have crushed.
- elmuerte17, on 05/12/2009, -1/+49Considering SE had the opportunity to nicely ask them to stop five years ago, when the first demo was sent to them and they remained silent, waiting until it was 98% finished for the C&D order... massive douchebaggery. On the other hand, I'm sure they'll get a mention in encyclopediadramatica under the "real life trolling" article.
- ZeaLitY, on 05/11/2009, -9/+55Director responded at http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/t ...
- simongiln, on 05/12/2009, -3/+47Well done Square Enix. You've just turned an obscure ROM mod into a symbol for a popular political movement. This was a very bad idea.
- CEAgent12, on 05/12/2009, -0/+38They told us that we could get prosecuted if it ends up getting "distributed" whatever that means. I made a post on the front page of the compendium or you can read it here:
http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/t ...
I hope that adequately explains why we don't just leak it.....The real question is if we are only distributing a patch (not the ROM) so.......what does that mean legally?
--JP - Valyn, on 05/12/2009, -1/+38Exactly. These corporate idiots just don't get it. Things like this keep an interest in the Chrono Trigger going. If another official Chrono was released this kind of thing will only help. I can't possible see how it would do any harm, AT ALL.
- tcianci, on 05/12/2009, -1/+36This is a very sad event for all the Chrono fans...
I admire the way Zeality and the staff from the Compendium and CE dealt with it, even though this is very sad. Congratulations for all of you, you were very mature. Few people could have accepted it the way you guys did.
Cheers for you... and success in your future projects. Unfortunately I'm not part of the forums (yet?) because I'm not very used to big forums, but I hope to show up in the Compendium soon.
Congrats and thanks. I admire you guys a lot - Leezus, on 05/12/2009, -0/+35Man, wouldn't it just be terrible if a version was leaked on to a torrent site or something? I hope if that happens, there's some way for people to send donations...
- Sirocco, on 05/12/2009, -2/+36With the uninspired, recycled ***** they've been dumping on us for the last decade, how exactly do you find this hard to believe?
- aspirax, on 05/12/2009, -1/+35Maybe you should get conveniently "hacked" and the "hackers" leaked it.
HMMMM. - fiatjustitia, on 05/12/2009, -2/+35It's time to wake up, Chrono...
- acumenprobitas, on 05/12/2009, -1/+34You should become the victim of a data leak/hacker and software piracy.
- Wolfbeta, on 05/12/2009, -1/+33This happened 5 years ago with Chrono Resurrection. http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/
Why then did another set of developers think that they could get away with it? - Malicious, on 05/12/2009, -0/+31Description FAIL. How about instead of 'Dropped C&D' you said 'Levied a C&D'. Dropped sounds like they removed it.
- SketchaMPM, on 05/12/2009, -1/+30Until they release a new game in the Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross universe, they need to back off. Last we heard, Square-Enix had no plans of releasing any future Chrono titles.
- directedition, on 05/12/2009, -0/+27beta testers still have copies
- Animan351, on 05/12/2009, -3/+30I'll pirate all their stuff until they go out of business. Thats how you can believe it.
- firesights, on 05/12/2009, -0/+26There's definitely a non-involved cutscene that could display it, though.
- KingGorilla, on 05/12/2009, -0/+25I'm counting on that Streisand Effect!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -8/+33Amazing what gets companies attention, they don't go after the thousands of ROM sites hosting the original game but make a modification to it, get out the lawyers!
We need Anon to go onto square's servers and delete the FFXIII source code, its worth the sacrifice! - Pirate45, on 05/12/2009, -3/+27I'm never buying a Square Enix game again. They just lost another customer.
- PeppermintPig, on 05/12/2009, -3/+27Market in action!
- BloodyMess, on 05/12/2009, -0/+23Chrono Resurrection is a totally different thing. It's a recreation, using the original IP as a roadmap. It was clearly near-current-tech cutting edge graphics. That's a much easier case to make for market dilution for Resurrection than here.
On the other hand, this game is a ROMhack. There are thousands of these out there. People have been creating them, releasing them, and the world still turns and demand still exists for the original games. They almost certainly don't affect the market for the original IP.
Totally different situations. That's why this cancellation feels less "inevitable" and more "vindictive" or at least "totally unnecessary." - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -1/+24:(, =\, >:(, :P, :O, =<,

If you're not happy about this, call and let them know! Specifically, encourage them to negotiate with the developers so that 5 years of work doesn't go to waste - they deserve as much. - alexkim804, on 05/12/2009, -0/+22one of my friends in high school got a C&D letter from nintendo cause he was doing a similar project with Zelda 2
- CEAgent12, on 05/12/2009, -0/+22Just so everyone knows, they've been getting a bunch of calls about this (atleast yesterday when I called them). They transfer you to the PR representative right away. It was actually kind of funny because I was calling to talk about the C&D and they wouldn't even transfer me to the legal dept :).
Annoyingly (atleast yesterday) the PR rep can only take one call at a time and everyone else got booted over to her answering machine. I had to call like 8 times to be the lucky person to be transferred to her after she finished one call and before she got another call.
I'm guessing since it is the only way to talk to them that I know of they should expect this so I won't specifically condone it. It's the only way I know of to contact them, but it felt like I was calling some small office that didn't have any way to negotiate with me or make any decisions to help me out. If you can find some other more avenue where can voice our complaints in a manner that they want but is also going to get a response let me know.
Please try to stay professional with them if you call them.

Sorry for the spammy cross-post, but it helps to know *where* to complain. :) - billessig, on 05/12/2009, -3/+24I second that. I will not purchase another Square-Enix game until they pull their heads out of their arses.
