- imasuperDOTcom, on 02/10/2009, -4/+27Um... they're selling flash games for 3$ a piece on the Wii Store... and a lot of those games are free on popcap.com or stupidzshiz.com...and you're complaining about THIS? I hate you.
- twertyto, on 02/10/2009, -3/+26Nintendo doesn't mention Wi-Fi because they know it sucks. The best online experience on the Wii is Mario Kart and that's pathetic compared to other consoles.
- kingmanic, on 02/10/2009, -3/+24Majority of wii ware are shallower than a free flash games. The majority of wii games are marginally more complex than a free flash game. They have a hand full of innovative games. a few good games that work better with a GC controller and then garbage. Wii's ultimate failure is the fact that they had 1 good idea (interesting power glove rehash), sold everyone on that idea, and then never did anything exciting with it.
- PhillyOC, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17It is so true about most Wii owners never knowing that their Wii has built-in wireless. I have had to set it up for almost everyone I know with a Wii because they didn't know how to do it or didn't even know it was there, and it only takes 5 minutes! It seems that damn near everyone has a wireless router anymore but never takes advantage of it.
- Branchex, on 02/10/2009, -2/+18Nintendo seems to be stuck between appeasing the long time gamers and parents that are scared of tech.
- divinediva, on 02/09/2009, -2/+17I think it's just pretty screwed up.
- merreborn, on 02/10/2009, -2/+16You have to admit, for point-and-click gaming, the Wii has a much better controller.
- westyvw, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12Not Enough Storage. Period.
Read specs: SD card? A standard SD card? I can listen to my own music when I play Excite Truck? Cool.
Fine Print: You cant use it to save downloads or games. Own a half dozen titles and your storage is already maxed out, never mind the WIIWare. - merreborn, on 02/10/2009, -2/+13Microsoft's servers store my credit card information. Just like amazon does. Or any other internet retailer. If anyone thought this was really an issue, XBox live and Amazon.com wouldn't exist.
No one's suggesting leaving your CC# on your console itself.
And, news flash: Nintendo's servers are storing your CC# anyway. They have to to process the charge. - chaosblade77, on 02/10/2009, -1/+125. Size limits and Nintendo seem to go hand in hand. N64 carts, GCN minidiscs, and now the 512MB flash memory. Given the limited amount of space the Wii has to store games, I can understand the 40MB limit. The failure to properly address the storage limit isn't justified though, and unless SDHC is going to be supported after their update, I don't think their SD solution will be too helpful.
4. I think this goes along with the above. It would be nice if demos were available for both Wii software and WiiWare games. It's understandable why they don't have Wii game demos, but no WiiWare demos is inexcusable.
3. I can't say I've ever had an issue with this, then again, I always use points cards.
2. See the first sentence in #5, and replace "Size limits" with "Crappy quality" and "Nintendo" with "Wii." I do wish they would put some effort into making sure better games get released more quickly on WiiWare and the Virtual Console though.
1. My cousins got a Wii for Christmas, and the first thing I noticed when it was turned on was that it contained new channel that mine didn't: an introductory channel that explains all of the things you can do online with the Wii, and how to connect it. I think they have this under control. - merreborn, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12"Short of releasing a new console that has 2GB+ of storage and physically going to peoples houses and connecting their Wiis to the internet what else can they do?"
They could have released a console with more storage from the begining, realizing that downloadable content was going to be one of the defining features of this generation of consoles
They could have dropped the whole "friend code" concept, and pushed for uninhibited, easy-to-access online play.
They could have designed a much better flow for the payment system. XBL does this without suffering from the micropayment problem you purpose. It's not an issue of large payments versus small ones, it's an issue of overly-cumbersome UI.
Internet enabled gaming defines modern consoles, and the Wii missed the boat. With the exception of storage, it's not even a hardware issue. It's entirely an issue of Nintendo's design choices and policies. - nights0223, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6They could at least give us the option.
- AzureRise, on 02/10/2009, -1/+7How about that when you buy a game on virtual console you download the emulator every time you download a game because it comes bundled with every game quickly eating up your hard drive space. Have the emulator built into the firmware and just download the roms? No! Lets make them download the emulator, every time!
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -2/+8The Wii is not setup to get a flood of downloadable titles with its limited file space. To add to that the 40mb limit stifles any flashy graphics. I would have bought the Wario Land game if it came to WiiWare for about $20. I am not shelling out $50 for the game even though I LOVE Wario platformers.
- rdvon, on 02/10/2009, -3/+8He meant point and click adventure game like myst or Strongbad...
- 4tygames, on 02/10/2009, -2/+7All new Wiis that are sold from Q4 '08 and on have a built in, instructional video channel to show users how to connect to the Internet to get more out of their Wii. Though this still doesn't keep the WiiWare from being awful. Konami, Gameloft, and HudsonSoft have been releasing tons of crap on it every week. The only WiiWare game I have bought so far has been World of Goo and the only one that I would consider buying is Tetris Party.
- Terasiel, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6At first I was going to bury this, but, after reading the talking points within the article, I mostly agree with it. The Wii doesn't do enough for demos - particularly for the downloadable DS portion. There's no Wii Hard drive, that I know of. There's not even a decent speed of updating the virtual console for N64 games. We still don't have Majora's Mask.
The only thing worse than the Wii for anything -but- demos and movies, is the 360. - SkippyDoorknob, on 02/10/2009, -3/+7There's a Wii-Fi logo on the cover of every game that has online functionality - how is that not mentioning it?
- Zarokima, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5My Life as a King and Lostwinds are actually really good, though Lostwinds is a little short for a $10 game.
And the fact that both of those were some of the first to come out only backs up the author's point :( - jeremymccurdy, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5It's really too bad that Wiiware is kinda crippled, especially by having only 512megs of space to store stuff on. But at least there are some really awesome WiiWare games like My Life as a King, The Strongbad Games, and Lost Winds.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Yup. It sucks. I have no idea how they dropped the ball so badly.
- MorpheousMarty, on 02/10/2009, -2/+5While everything you said is true, I want to add a few statistics, before everyone starts giving Nintendo advice. Nintendo makes the two most successful consoles in history, the DS and the Wii, which often sell more than the rest of the console industry combined. This means in any given month, 50-70% of the console sales are for Nintendo. Combine this with the fact they actually make a profit selling the console (Sony and Microsoft lose money on their consoles and make it up in game licenses), and it almost seems silly to tell them how to run their consoles.
When they can keep a Wii on store shelves for more than a week, I will be the first to criticize on their strategy. However, for now they couldn't be more successful, and I for one will try to learn from their success before telling them how they should do things. - kingmanic, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3RE:4 is roughly the same with either control scheme and wii tennis is wretched inaccurate. Mario tennis is better with the normal controller.
- Shadic, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4The wireless connection in the thing is pretty crappy though, I've had it struggle to get a connection from 30 feet away.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3The PSP has PS1 games, all running slightly differently from each other but everything is still contained in the firmware.
It's definitely possible and it makes more sense to do it like that - deweyhewson, on 02/10/2009, -2/+4I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the points the author made, but I just want to point that I am a serious gamer (oxymoron?) who rarely spends much time with casual titles, but I thought TV Show King was rather fun.
I bought it over the Christmas break for my in-laws' Wii and we all had a blast playing it together. - paulsmith288, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3No demos - no interest
- datng8, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3I have a Wii myself. Since, the time I bought and till now I just play on it less than 10 times, and I bought it about 6 months ago. Simply put, every points from the article is true. The Wii does not live up to it promises.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Nintendo are telling developers behind the curtains that in 2009 they will promote WiiWare and DSiWare. 2008 was the year ofWii Fit for them and they were focusing mostly on that. At a developers' event in France, asked about WiiWare's poor interest for developers a Nintendo person replied "this s obviously the future, how can you be thinking for one minute that we'll give up on this..."
So, I guess there is hope after all. Now if only they could let us create Nintendo accounts for REAL that would work for both DSi and Wii, and trash the friends codes and the separate Wii/DSi points...
Oh and by the way, I know of at least 2 cool WiiWare games that have yet to be announced... I'm working on them :) - chaosblade77, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3It's possible that the emulators are slightly different for each game in order to achieve perfect emulation. The code to perfect one game may screw up another so you have game specific code on occasion anyway. It's probably easier for them to add a small-but-perfect emulator to each game rather than have one emulator that covers everything that would likely need frequent updates.
If PS2 games are ever downloadable via PSN, I'm almost certain Sony will use this same method to ensure the game works properly. - chaosblade77, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Assuming they add SDHC support, I'd be fine with that solution. Even if they added game demos, it's not like the Wii has as much to store as the PS3 and 360 (bigger games, HD movies, etc).
A freely accessible 8GB SD card would probably be enough for anyone for the rest of the life of the console, since the maximum size of a game download is going to be 50MB or so (biggest of the N64 games). Maybe 16GB if they add demos.
Of course, both demos and SDHC are unlikely to ever happen. - Valyn, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I completely agree. I bought a Wii, played the hell out of mario kart and smash bros, then packed it up and forgot about it. For me (yes, i know others love it), the Wii is so bad that I don;t even bother to look for descent games anymore, ive given up on it.
- MindStalker, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Tell your little brother how to set it up. If he's older than 5 he should be able to do it better than your mom. :)
- Cheesepuffly, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1But you need a memory stick to put it on (but its not that bad, cause you probably never take it out of a PSP anyway)
- chaosblade77, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1@Valyn
You could reverse that and say "If I can play 6 of my PS1 games on this emulator almost perfectly, why does the 7th have a ton of graphical glitches and the 8th crash at the title screen?" I don't know a lot about emulation, but apparently games use the hardware differently.
Anyway, I'm not sure how this would have much to do with a fear or the internet or anything like that. Just using ROMs is begging for trouble, and as we saw one of the first Wii hacks was adding your own ROMs to the console. They probably knew the risks there, but went through with it because they didn't expect the average user to know about things like ROMs or modding consoles. - Truth3, on 02/10/2009, -2/+3I'm waiting for Animales De La Muerte on Wiiware. The makers of that game are the makers of "The Conduit", which will be the must have game on the Wii this year (first person shooter w/ online support). http://wii.ign.com/articles/869/869222p1.html
- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2It was just announced that it's going to be a full disc game because it woulnd't fit under the file size limit.
- Valyn, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I hate the Wii, but nothing is saying that when Wii2 comes out, you have to thrown away your first Wii... The problem is that you move content to another Wii.
Yet again, people are so scared of piracy that the honest guy gets screwed. - Scott2, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2Nintendo will be opening up the ability to use the SD slot to run games from. They're thinking that that will make up for no HD. Man are they ever wrong.
- h0ly, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2Well, now you don't have to keep waiting on Wiiware, because Animales de la Muerte is going to be a retail title.
(the developers said themselves) - esc27, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1My major complaint (and the main reason I haven't talked myself into buying a wii) is that the downloaded games are stuck with the system. No resell, no transfer to another Wii, no guarantee they will work when Wii2 or whatever comes along. It is like paying full price to rent a game.
- Valyn, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Wait... You like the idea of using a thumbstick for a mouse cursor? I COMPLETELY HATE the Wii, and I can still see that it has a superior controller for adventure games. Hell its one of the VERY FEW places that the Wii has an advantage.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2WiiWare games are total *****. i mean *****. The retro titles are ok, but 5 bucks for a game you can get free ROMs for? Lame. Nintendo just doesn't do online. It was tacked on at the last minute, and it shows.
- kingmanic, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1By a happenstance of Christmas I have both PS2 and Wii editions and it's a subjective matter but I prefer the precision of the controller over the novelty of the wiimote. You do have to learn to use either but the wiimote is horribly inaccurate when used with a widescreen TV. even on widescreen mode it doesn't seem to make adjustments to the input so you have to do it mentally. In either case you need to learn how to use it and the wiimote it's not a very sensitive or accurate device and it feels like I'm fighting it to aim properly.
That said some people prefer it and like the roughly 1:1 feeling of shooting with it so I'll put it down as roughly equal. There is a significant promise for the wii for FPS's but the built in delay and the poor accuracy of the wiimote hurt it. The wiimote plus may help this but I'm done buying cheap plastic crap. If Nintendo offered it as a free upgrade then all is forgiven and I'll buy more wii games. If they don't then Nintendo will not get any more of my business. - inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Well Nintendo did Wii Sports, which is in fact a pretty amazing game. It's the thrid party publishers who should grow a pair and actually greenlight games like Winter and probably many other Wii projects for gamers that will never see daylight.
Blame Nintendo for their retarded online services and old hardware, they deserve it.
Don't Blame Nintendo for the idiocy of third party publishers who just can't do anything but copycat what's been successful for Nintendo instead of making real games. - Valyn, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Never thought of that either. But I don't beleive it. ALL nintendo's played ALL NES games. If the emulator correctly emulates the hardware, then it does not matter what rom/game you are playing.
I think it has more to do with Nintendo's inherent dislike/mistrust of anything to do with the internet. Nintendo wrongly guessed on how important the online functionality of this generations console's would be. Basically they were aiming at a completely different market than sony/microsoft. Then realized too late how big microtransaction, dlc, and downloadable games were becoming. Even Microsoft underestimated it withn their horrible 20GB hard drive (if you got one at all!).
I CANT STAND SONY or anything to do with them, but I still realize that Sony got it right with their bluetooth and user-installable PC hard drive. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1just hack your wii... they have ported all the emulators from NES to Genesis for it.
- rknowles10, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Personally, I wouldn't design anything for WiiWare until Nintendo shows everyone a set date and specs of a real storage solution. Even using a 2GB SD card could easily get maxed out eventually by an avid WiiWare/VC user over the life of the system.
