- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -28/+101They didn't give it a 10 because it's not an M rated fps, typical 1up review.
- R3Dirkulous, on 11/06/2007, -4/+73"In short, Galaxy is one of the most impressive, engrossing games in recent memory -- and quite the contrast to the rest of this year's triple-A gaming crop, which tends toward the dark, the M-rated, and the first-person perspective. Gaming may be growing up (per se), but gamers will always appreciate beautifully polished gameplay and inventive design...even if it's sugarcoated with squeaky baby stars and a goofy cartoon of a hero. Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic."
I think thats one of the best compliments you can give a game. Its obvious the reviewer loves it. now everyone go buy it. :) - bsachtjen, on 11/05/2007, -4/+57i need to find a mountain and freeze myself until the release date
- b3owulf, on 11/05/2007, -1/+501) One man's "minus sign" is another man's hyphen
2) Negative numbers do not have spaces between the minus sign and the number
3) Any idiot would obviously know that the game did not receive "-9.5"
4) This means you're below the idiot level on the intelligence scale - Moloy, on 11/05/2007, -2/+36Since when was 9.5 a bad score? There are other numbers between 1 and 10 besides those that fall between 7 and 10, such as 1, 3, and 5, not to mention some others.
9.5 is a spectucular score for a game being scored on a 1 to 10 scale. Some people's patellar reflexes are astounding - srdg34, on 11/05/2007, -9/+38The same reviewer gave Halo 3 a 9. But don't let that get in the way of your knee-jerk.
- atomicpoet, on 11/05/2007, -6/+29And you just know that if 1UP *could* give a perfect score for a platformer, they would. I mean really, when was the last time 1UP gave *any* platformer a perfect score? Not that I'm complaining :)
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+25You've been reported to Abuse@digg.com for mentioning millionairematch in every single post you make.
- Drax0n, on 11/05/2007, -7/+30Halo 3 was not innovative.. just another FPS
- mathmanjeffy, on 11/06/2007, -3/+25I don't support HDTV :( Will you forgive me?
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+20I really shouldn't be surprised that people are complaining that it "only" got a 9.5, but I am. Does the fact that it didn't quite get a 10, change the fact that you're still going to buy it, and enjoy it? Would life have been any better if it had gotten a 10? I realize people will find something to whine and cry about, but this is pretty petty.
- Xondar, on 11/05/2007, -2/+20Yeah, because most websites give out MINUS review scores all the time. Idiot.
- FWitness, on 11/05/2007, -1/+19The problem is the majority of game reviewing systems in use on use the top portion of the scale. Most games score at least a 6 if not a seven. Very rarely do you see a game related below a five. So if you listed all the reviews done by any given magazine you would get something like this:
Scored range : Percentage of games rated as such
9-10: 3%
6-8: 85%
3-5: 12%
1-2: .004%
This effectively destroys the scale as you're only using the high end. I'm sorry but in my experience there are most certainly a lot more games that should score less than a five. I think magazines avoid the low end for fear of alienating advertisers.
My solution is to go with a more movie model approach. Use a strict 1 -5 range with NO decimals. If a game is broken, derivative or not even worth a rental, feel free to score it as a one. - Synthesize, on 11/05/2007, -0/+15OH NOES!!! 9.5? I'm canceling my pre-order.
- inkswamp, on 11/05/2007, -7/+22And? Nothing wrong with Super Mario Sunshine, for its day especially. It's still a lot of fun to play and about 50 times more inventive with its scenarios and challenges than most games out there.
- dethsesh, on 11/05/2007, -2/+16why the ***** should any game get a perfect score, I hate perfect score because i know they are just hyped. 9.5 is great
- alaskandesign, on 11/06/2007, -3/+17Because the console world has enough graphics competitors. Nintendo did the smart thing by focusing on innovation.
- GenoBaby, on 11/06/2007, -0/+14Stores are only get 6 per store but it's a lot of stores that are getting it. They are shipping more than twice the normal amout a week (100,000 units). It's already sold 13 million in less than 12 months. So it's selling averagely 1 million per month. They are shipping tons... it's just that they are selling as soon as they hit the shelves.
- mastershake329, on 11/06/2007, -2/+16this game has great graphics so i dont know what the ***** you're talking about. They wanted a cheaper system, thats why it has a less powerful GPU/CPU and less ram, not because they wanted motion controls
- Matt174e, on 11/05/2007, -9/+23That was generous of him.
- artemus, on 11/06/2007, -3/+15Yeah, except Halo games aren't worth a 9. They should be ranked in the 7.0-7.5 range.
- Tippis, on 11/05/2007, -3/+14One the other hand, don't confuse the minus sign (-) with the hyphen (–) or with the m-dash (—)...
- DavidGX, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11I fail to see how this game being good means HD gaming is "just hype". Also, saying "my car performs much better at 20mph than yours does at 200mph!" isn't saying much. This coming from a Wii/360 owner who's already paid off mario galaxy.
- NikhilPK, on 11/05/2007, -2/+12Don't do it, you might just end up having to deal with a bunch of sea otters.
- artemus, on 11/05/2007, -3/+13I don't think people are "crying" about the game getting a 9.5, only the reasoning behind it. It seems pretty trivial to knock a half-point off because it "lacks HD". C'mon, We all know that the Wii is not an HD machine, but what does that have to do with the game? Does it make the game control better. Really, it's unprofessional statements like this that give a bad name to gaming. If you want to give a game a 9.5, fine, I'll gladly take it. But don't mark it down for something that it doesn't have.
- thebellmaster1x, on 11/06/2007, -1/+11Maybe because people want a game with depth rather than the same damn high-res generic grunt monster everywhere.
- silverwolfe, on 11/05/2007, -2/+12No, it's a ***** 9.5. See?
- culturedredneck, on 11/06/2007, -0/+10Great review. One of the best-written evaluations I've read in a while. Too often game reviewers recite the storyline, cut/paste bullet points from press releases and give us a number. This writer seems to understand what makes for a great game (and I'm glad to hear Galaxy is one of them!). Good on ya 1UP.
- theragu40, on 11/05/2007, -1/+10What?
- Mrstupid7, on 11/06/2007, -1/+10The somewhat sharper picture adds an insane amount of funness!
- Shirt, on 11/06/2007, -0/+9So what if they had made the system slightly more powerful? It'd most likely still be less powerful than the 360 and PS3, but it'd be more expensive. Don't kid yourself, you'd STILL complain about the graphics as long as they aren't as good as other next-gen systems. So since they weren't ever going to be as good as the other systems, why complain that this way you're getting a cheaper system? Furthermore Mario Galaxy's graphics look fantastic. I'm honestly not sure how Mario could look much better. And trust me, if the system had higher specs the game would almost definitely be same because, unlike most modern games, Mario titles are designed around intelligent level and puzzle design, and enemies are placed to take the most advantage of those situations. So instead of the developer randomly throwing hordes of enemies at you for no reason (probably to hide the poor level design) you get a fully realized game that is played EXACTLY as Nintendo wants it to be played. Would you rather have Mario Galaxy or a game where you fight hordes of Goombas on a lifeless environment? Once again, though, I bet the Wii can render as many ***** Goombas as it wants to.
- Muncher, on 11/05/2007, -0/+9I don't know about you, but I have neither a hyphen nor an "m-dash" key on my keyboard.
- joelmole, on 11/06/2007, -0/+9Darkside, that doesn't make much sense. How has Nintendo sold more than twice as many consoles as Sony, and passed Microsoft up with a year delay, if they're shipping fewer consoles to "create demand"? Stands to reason that on a given day, a store will receive more Wiis than PS3s or Xbox 360s.
- jmpeagle, on 11/05/2007, -5/+13ot because they are based on subjective views of those reviewing it? Critics aren't paid for objectivity but for opinions.
- theragu40, on 11/05/2007, -1/+8I don't know why you're being dugg down. What you said is mostly true.
- MechaZain, on 11/05/2007, -0/+7I agree that giving low scores to big titles to cause controversy is bad journalism, but honestly I prefer it over the flip side. Sites that hand out tens like trick-or-treat candy are even less helpful. At least with the overtly critical scores, the attempt to back it up and it results in a more cohesive article.
I've yet to find a site that balances the two extremes though. - Rovient, on 11/05/2007, -0/+7I cannot actually believe that some people here are complaining about a 9.5 "It's sooo unfair!"
How could it be any better? Are you NOT going to play it out of protest now? Jesus christ most people are so thick it pains me. - dethsesh, on 11/05/2007, -1/+8its NOT mario 64, this is how the game must be approached
- deadsQuerl, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6It was released two days ago in Japan..
- harajukukei, on 11/04/2007, -1/+7ive been playing it all week and i give it a 10
- SlappyMc, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6you sir, are an idiot.. Read the review, not just the number.
- Puffball, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7jesus christ, a single word isn't a proper way to express your differences. go use the english language and put some effort into it!
- grumbel, on 11/04/2007, -5/+11That might be true, but its still no match for Mario64, not even close.
- Shirt, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6*****. Mario Galaxy has deviated quite a bit more from Mario 64 than Halo 3 did from Halo 2, Halo 1, or any other FPS out there.
- TomRemixed, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6I'd do that if I didn't already have a ton of new games. Still gotta beat Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Orange Box is keeping me busy, and GH3 just came so yeah I got a lot of games to play this holiday season.
- lostboy, on 11/05/2007, -0/+6It isn't necessary for a game to innovate to be good, however why should a gaming journalist give it the same mark as a truly original game that moves gaming as a whole forward?
- theaceoffire, on 11/05/2007, -1/+7Well hang on... In halo 3, the extra details allow the player to accidentally kill themselves with a traffic cone.
That adds SOMETHING, doesn't it? - skyfire1, on 11/05/2007, -3/+8Go ***** yourself.
- mastershake329, on 11/05/2007, -1/+6Thats pathetic! Do you just spend all ***** day at gamestop?
- Shirt, on 11/05/2007, -1/+6Did anybody play this game all the way through? Mario Sunshine was completely solid in terms of gameplay and graphics. It ran smoothly with few, if any, glitches. The only problem were the Delfino people. They were ***** stupid. The game itself was incredibly fun however.
