- PhillipL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26With the sad state of popular music it is sad that a good popular band is leaving us...even if they are a shadow of their former selves they are still way better than most of the crap on the radio.
- everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23GOD DAMN YOU HALF JAPANESE GIRLS, YOU DO IT TO ME EVERY TIME!!
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21You were too busy memorizing Eminem lyrics...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Retiring for the 5th and final time!
- oslointhesummer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Agreed. It really pains me to see all these people praising the "death" of Weezer, never having heard Pinkerton.
I know there'll never be another El Scorcho, but I keep crossing my fingers. - timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If you have never listened to Pinkerton, please do so. Also, listen to the b-sides from that era. And the "Songs from the Black Hole". There is some face-melting music there. (in a good way)
- millman613, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16blue and pinkerton are classics, weezer r.i.p.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Metallica quit being drunk... then they made St. Anger
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18why bother? it's gonna hurt me
it's gonna kill when you desert me
this happened to me twice before
WONT HAPPEN TO ME ANYMORE OH OH - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Damn. They were actually pretty good. Well, at least better than most of the stuff on the radio these days. I'll miss them.
- Piper7865, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Yah I love my Weezer but that last album wasn't all that great. It wasn't bad .. but it wasn't very good either. Respect to Weezer
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You forgot the appropiate /sarcasm tag
- BBryan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11anything on the radio is pop (popular) no matter what the genre is.
- planksconstant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11exactly my point
- lankybutmacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Surprised to see cosmospring being dugg down. It really has been time for that band to retire for a while. Whether or not you like the last three albums, there's no arguing that they're far, far below the standard set by the Blue Album and Pinkerton.
That said, I would like to see a Blue Album/Pinkerton-era B-sides album. There are some good ones. - Daryl209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well, that made my day.
Would have been much better if I read that Fall Out Boy and/or My Chemical Romance broke up.....or caught fire and burned to hell. - HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Hopefully Green Day will follow suit.
- kingp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well, Rivers recently got married to his girlfriend of 8 years (who also happens to be half japanese, how funny. Listen to El Scorcho off Pinkerton if you don't understand), so really what else will he have to write about? Most of his songs have been about depression and wanting a girlfriend, etc. However, I look forward to Patrick Wilson (Weezer drummer) starting up The Special Goodness again. They were pretty good. I haven't listened to Space Twins much though (they are Brian Bell's band) but I'm sure that most of them will be pretty busy. Scott Shriner (Weezer bassist) also plays in Patrick Wilson's band.
- sklegg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Hash Pipe" might have been a decent single but can it compare to "My Name is Jonas" or "No Other One"? No way.
(OMG Wezlanator was in second grade when the blue album came out. I am old.) - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The man wrote Pinkerton and hates it. He has been an idiot since he let the critics at the time change his opinion of what is good. So what that the album tanked - sometimes its about putting out what is real to you, regardless of the public's opinion. They will come around if it has any merit. Instead we got 3 phony albums after it that were sorry attempts to recover their past glory.
Also, to add to his idiocy, he actually believes that Matt Sharp was not integral to their sound.
I wish the man would have kept it together, because he wrote two great records. - edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The Blue album and Pinkerton are classics in my book....there with me back in the day. Last time I saw them live, though, it made me feel old. I'm only 26, but the entire crowd was mostly young teens and preteens. Makes me wonder if they check out their earlier stuff. And you can't tell me this doesn't hit home for a lot of Diggers and Slashdotters:
I've got the Dungeon Master's Guide.
I've got a 12-sided die.
I've got Kitty Pryde
And Nightcrawler too
Waiting there for me.
Yes I do, I do.
Here's hoping for some more unreleased bsides CDs! - breego, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Dude they are the crap on the radio. These guys jumped the shark with the third album. It quit being Rock music and became Pop.
- mendosaprime, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16there was a time in my life when weezer were the only band that existed and now after hearing this news, thank god, that last album was dreadful.
- scrambled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Compared to the rest of the MTV culture, they weren't THAT bad.
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Say it ain't sooooooo-ooooooo-wooooaah-oooooo-woooooaahh-oooo....."
- greg04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3how does a band sell-out that was never underground to begin with? weezer was only a band for a year before "buddy holly" hit.
- starnix17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They may say that they are done, but according to Wikipedia, their contract states that we're in store for two more albums.
Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer - triath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Every band goes through different stages where they experiment, and create stuff that sounds like ass. The last Weezer album was their ***** up, and i'm kinda disappointed that they don't follow it up with something that doesn't blow.
- SLP1111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is such a pity.
- nLi1317, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4for all the crap that weezer made in the last 3 albums, blue and pink are some of the best rock records out there so give the legendary king of emo props....
only in dreams - cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They should have stopped while they were ahead.. those were a couple of my favorite albums, while green and make believe were complete garbage. Sorry to offend any watery-eyed, ambivalent emo teens by saying so.
- scottauth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For those of you who only followed this band's commercials releases, but crave more material aiken to the Pinkerton era I highly suggest you "digg" into their unreleased catalog:
http://www.weerez.com/news/
That website is an excellent place to find well over triple digits worth of Weezer songs that will never surface on a record you'll find in a store. "Devotion," "Brightening Day," "I Just Threw Out the Love of my Dreams," and the infamous Songs from the Black Hole are all songs any fan of Weezer should hear.
...and those are just the tip of the ice berg.
I'm sorry if this sounds like an awful promo, but they're my favorite band and I'd hate to see them go (again). - jay314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@cheesegod:
Did you hear The Rentals are back together?
http://www.therentals.com/ - sp1keNARF, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@planksconstant
i'm sure then, that you're well aware that chord progression (1-4-5) has made more money for artists than any other, by far. there are probably 100 bands with #1 singles that use that progression, and they're laughing all the way to the bank with their "genius". - spih27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It doesn't sound like they're done completely, note at the end he thinks they need one or two more songs for a greatest hits album.
- StingRay5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3F-Bflat-C is 1-4-5 in F major
- MoreBonez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhh, "experiment" is the last thing they did on their past few albums.
- Luthor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Weezer had some great timeless tunes and albums, but the time had come. Congrats to them for breaking up before they completely sucked. More bands should follow this example.
- stvnly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2any one esle find River's Asian fettish a little creepy?
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2weezer was dead to me after pinkerton anyways.. imo. but both of those albums (blue and pinkerton) are probably in my top 50 rock albums of all time..
- Niffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@lankybutmacho
I believe you can find those b-sides on the blue album "Delux Edition" that was released last year. Unless you are referring to something else. - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I seen them the last time they were in Chicago with Interpol...What a show!...When it came to "Island in the Sun" he played it solo while walking around the stadium on a wireless hookup.
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Screw beverly hills.. song is anoying.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11They sucked ever since he quit doing drugs and drinking.
- Kalluas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was so ready to make a say it ain't so joke but I guess I'm gonna have to keep fishin.
It sounded funny in my head. - cdawzrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is it me or is this happening with a lot of bands these years? It seems like many of the bands that I listen to were really good in the early 90s and then got bad or broke up, and there's nothing good to replace them, everything that's "big" now sucks (Green Day, anyone?)
Let's see:
Sublime - RIP Brad, no one has brought that same reggae-punk sound to the world since
Nirvana - well, the grunge era may be over, but I don't like its replacement - pop rock
Weezer - Like many have said, only the first few albums were good
Red Hot Chili Peppers - What happened to the funk? By The Way was marginal and Stadium just sucks
Now, all the music I hear on the radio sounds the same, the singers sound the same, they use the same kind of distortion on the guitar, its like its generated by computer, same four chords, nothing outstanding about the bands... no amazing guitar solos, no amazing bassists (save Flea), no great lyrics, the singers all start to sound like Creed to me... Never mind all the emo bands and ***** like that...
I mean, there are lots of good bands out there, like the Flaming Lips and other stuff of that nature... we just need to see those kinds of new music getting more attention, so maybe they can start replacing the bad radio music. I know you guys say that all the Clear Channel stuff is going to be crap, but come on, I mean when Sublime was around they played that on the radio and it was still good music! - funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FYI, Weezer is Rivers Cuomo. The two other members are basically hired talent, so they get jack squat compare to Rivers. He even rides his own bus. I heard this information from ?Shannon Bell? I think it is, one of the guys in the band's sister.
This could all be untrue, I can't verify she was his sister. - dranyam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We were good as married in my mind
But married in my minds no good
A pink triangle on her sleeve
Let me know the truth
Let me know the truth
Might have smoked a few in my time
But never thought it was a crime
Knew the day would surely come
When Id chill and settle down
We'll miss you guys :( -
