- kooheboos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57Ultimate-Guitar.com is the best tabulature site I ever saw. I think it's must be on-line forever!
- everdred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41> I really do not see why an artist would be upset with someone wanting to learn how to play their song.
Maybe this... *gasp*... has nothing to do with what artists want! Wouldn't surprise me. - szelij, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31If the RIAA cannot force allmp3s to shut down, it has harder luck with this website.
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Anyone else find it ironic that the last refuge for American freedoms is Russia?
- therunnersays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I was sad to see a bunch of the other sites getting shutdown, like Mxtabs, etc. I really do not see why an artist would be upset with someone wanting to learn how to play their song. I would love it if somebody wanted to know how to play my music. The MPA's actions are going to spawn more and more tab sites. There is no way they can keep up with all of them.
- diggingthisone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22thank god UG has the balls to face the ***** for brains MPA...
- pyrotherm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17They already shut down mxtabs.net!
One thing i have often wondered, most of these tab sites are used by people learning to play, and furthering thier musical education. So if they are hurting musical talent, aren't they hurting thier future profits? - LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@fallingstars: Would you? Or would you just try and figure it out by ear as you listen to the song? I've got some friends who play the guitar a bit, and for the most part, that's how they learn to play new songs. Either that, or one of the guys who is musical enough to learn by ear teaches the guy who isn't. Should you be prohibited from playing a guitar near a CD player too, to force you to buy MPA-sanctioned material?
- jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13>The MPA's argument about tabs is analogous to the RIAA's argument over MP3s. If you didn't have access to a free transcription of the song on the Internet, you would have to buy the sheet music. Therefore, music publishers are losing out on sales.
However, as far as I know, there isn't some sort of "iTunes" for sheet music. There aren't a lot of tab books out there, certainly not for every popular band or song. They don't even come out that often. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13i agree. i have been playing for about 12 years now and its nice to be able to go to this site and learn a song that everyone knows. but im not going out and profiting on this. and nobody is going to be like "thatsmyaibo just played that song so well, i dont need to buy the cd!". we arent hurting the industry so wtf is wrong with the RIAA? they are disintegrating the music industry and are making love to the ashes ,,i, take that RIAA...
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Tab's aren't illegally duplicating sheet music... If i listen to a song and I hum it to someone else is that illegal?
Y'know what.. I can't believe we even have to waste precious minutes of our lives listening to these ***** pathetic arguments...
I just want them all to die in a ditch.. noone I know who is producing music is going to stop just because these soulless pricks aren't getting a slice of the pie. - Jon20usa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Digg this people. We need to get the word out that not all the tabs sites are giving in. I for one am very glad for that. I use UG a ton to look up tabs for songs I like. But there are also videos there teaching you how to play (some very good ones on trickier techniques). And it is one of my primary sources of rock musicians' news. Thank you UG for talking a stand against the MPAA.
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I was fearing that this site would get the axe like all those other sites. Glad to see Russian law coming to the rescue, this is one of my most visited guitar tab sites. Quite frankly, I don't get how the artists are losing money on this. Sheet music for songs isn't exactly something I see in many music stores and even when it's available, the selection is miniscule. If artists or record companies personally cared so much or felt they were losing money they could probably just request there music to be taken down.
And who the heck modded down Everdred? He's most definately correct: it's a business decision and not a creative one. Most artists probably take the tabs as a compliment- this is all about the potential to sell these things and I wouldn't be surprised if someone started a business doing exactly that. - fallingstars, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"...we arent hurting the industry..."

</devils-advocate> - Nu_Metalz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Go UG! ..the MPA needs to stop doing stupid sh*t like this!
- mojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8UG is the last good tab site remaining. Good to see them fighting.
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That would be the MPA - Music Publishers' Association
not the MPAA- Motion Picture Association of America - Remz02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bwahahaha! All hail Russia and their awesome shielding of ultimate guitar.com :D
I'm glad they've got a way out of this, otherwise it'd be a lot harder for me to find songs to learn. - xsnslaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its not as if there is any 'official' way of getting tabs for all songs, only certain successful artists release them in books, they dont supply them with the CDs do they, this is so lame, soon if you do by the CD and do learn it yourself, but then goto a open mic night at a local bar, get up and play the song you have learnt, you will be slapped with a fine .... surely this is hurting the music more ? i have found so many songs i now like from listening to friends playing the songs, and have even ended up buying the track on itunes, I think the MPA and RIAA managers and directors really secretly hate music and want to banish if from the world ...
- jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Powertabs went down a while ago out of fear - All their files are now hosted by other sites, such as Ultimate-Guitar.
- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As usual, russian law comes to the rescue.
Why don't MPA spend their money on a good guitar (pro) tab site where we can get as many tabs we want for $5 a year, where the tabs come directly from the artists.
Then no one would visit the sites anymore and they wouldn't have to go cry at the free tab site.
Or they just understand that you don't think "hmm, should I buy the cd or download the tabs" but you buy the cd and then download the tabs.
MPA are stupid. - Daiver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Awesome statement.
- brentris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I know you're being the devil's advocate in that statement, but I've just got a few thoughts:
For the bands that I like, not all of their music is available in sheet music books, only like one album, or the greatest hits.
Also, Those books don't always have notes, guitar tabs, bass tabs, acoustic versions, etc., whereas these tabs websites are very versatile in that regard.
One other thing, I really like these tab sites because I get much more enjoyment out of the songs I already own. It increases their value and makes me want to buy songs because I can then play along with them. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah but all the current ceo's will have bailed by then taking their massive packages and leaving the burning ship for those that come after them
its the way business works, why make massive profits later when I can make some profits now (I may not be here later) - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uh, I think you're a little confused. We're talking about the Music Publishers' Association (MPA), not the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While I am often in disagreement with the extreme actions that the RIAA often takes against music piracy and the like, I've been nothing short of angry over what they have been doing to many popular tablature sites in recent months. The online guitar archive, which has been the longest-running site for gutiar tabs on the internet was recently shut down over a similar legal request. I'm very glad to see ultimate-guitar.com taking a stand.
So often these tabs are incorrect anyway. It's just insane to think that there's such a vast wealth of information out there on the internet, for free nonetheless for other people to do nothing short of learn from, and these agencies want a total monopoly on it, which is gross. - jimmiejaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All our tab are belong to russia!
Keep on rockin' in the free world - film42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No they all charge money for music, I believe it's $3.95 for a single song of sheetmusic
Check this out, did anyone see this below thearticle?
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/img/other/mpa_reminder.JPG - Justinpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Isn't a website like this promoting people to learn to play their instrument eventually funding such organizations? This is where people learn to play, this is the ultimate place to find detailed tabs. There are future musicians becoming what they are because of this site.
- tj_walker_dvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess I will have to buy a license from the RIAA to teach my students songs that they want to play on the Guitar/drums/Bass etc before I can teach it to them.
= : )K - Yasumoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I really.
REALLY.
really don't want the dang MPA to take out ultimate guitar. This is preposterous. - KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seriously!! This is ***** ridiculous! TABS FOR GOD'S SAKE. Shut the ***** up and die already RIAA/MPA/Whatever. This is taking things way too far.
- DarkerMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you guys are the best...i hate ***** websites that just rool over and die
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i was really disappointed when mxtabs went down, because it happened so fast and before everyone else. it was, imo, one of the best quality tab sites out there, if not the largest quantity. the mpa can shove it. i've bought sheet music before, but i won't anymore because of their village idiot legal tactics.
- reed311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Chord progression cannot be copywritten. They MPA are threatening a frivilous lawsuit if they are requesting that any tabs that merely list the chords that were played in the song be removed.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3these a**holes dont even care about the future of music and the artsts. Much like the RIAA, all they care about are their pockets.
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol there's nothing like russian "copyright" law. just have to pay a small royalty, and you can serve ANYTHING. allofmp3 works like that. it seems kind of backwards here, but it's absolutely hillarious to see big business get taken out with it.
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nope, mxtabs.net went down a looong time ago, for the same reasons. that and ultimate-guitar.com were my default tab places. really terrible.
oh, and mxtabs.net was definitely as good as ug, in quality if not in quantity. - film42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They're not breaking any laws!
- cdawzrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think all those tab sites should release their entire archives on bittorrent and spread 'em around so they will never die... kinda like the Anarchist's Cookbook except for guitar.
- cytokinesis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used that site since before they had the wicked interactive interface, and it was just a database and I'm glad to see those crazy russians are keeping their heels planted.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Спасибо Россия, для того, чтобы помогать вашим друзьям на западе бьет корпоративное запугивание.
(translation: Thank you russia, for helping your friends in the west beat corporate bullying.) - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2interesting thoughts on the "downloading tabs = not buying sheet music" theories...
but!
You aren't downloading sheet music, you are downloading artist interpretations of songs. Is it illegal for me to listen to a song, figure out how to play it, and write that down? Is it illegal for me to give away how I believe the song shoudl be played? Maybe there are some plagiarism issues here, I don't know... it just doesn't sit well with me that tabs sites are getting desist orders and legal threats now.
also, please note that every single tab book I have seen in a store was NOT written by the respective artists, so it's not like those are necessarily accurate either. - wafflesomd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Arnt the tabs made by users? I think that accounts for something. I mean, if this is the case, then whats stopping me from listeing to the song, learning it from ear, and playing it in front of my frenids?
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks MPA/RIAA or whomever. I didn't know about this site, but now I do, so thanks to you, I'm going to start using it.
Roasted! - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, the tides seem to have turned in some ways... which reminds me, i need to go get my chipped passport and national ID card when they're both out...
- metalaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.digg.com/music/MuSATO_Stop_the_MPA_from_destroying_the_internet_s_resourcefulness
an organized approach to the argument that guitar resources are not sheet music - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What were the exact words he used?
"some sort of "iTunes" for sheet music"
iTMS does happen to charge you for music... - jollyroger814, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for those of you who didnt, read the article. UG isn't going anywhere or removing any tabs.
