No.1, huge surprise - Mysticcal, on 01/24/2009, -0/+14Was anyone else not suprised Nobuo Uematsu was 1st?
- GarmaZed, on 01/24/2009, -1/+11Forget the /s tag? I would've been shocked if he wasn't there, dude's got his stuff down.
- hyrate, on 01/24/2009, -1/+10That's because there is only one letter in the Japanese language that ends in what we would consider a consonant sound. So....unless a name ends in "n," it's going to end with a vowel.
- wingk1314, on 01/24/2009, -0/+8what's with the preview thumbnail??
- Aanidaani, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7Good to see Mitsuda and Uematsu where they belong.
- ShadowofAres, on 01/24/2009, -0/+7I guess Square Enix knows a good composer when they see one/
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+6Nobuo is my god. He makes some amazing stuff.
- zombieball, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5I suppose you know nothing of the Japanese "alphabet". Take a look at hiragana http://www.japanorama.com/images/hiragana.gif Names AND words (aside for the 'san' variety) quite often end in vowels....
- TheBadWolf, on 01/24/2009, -0/+5I would've had to be furious if Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda weren't on there. Although I do think Motoi Sakuraba should be a little higher.
- TheBadWolf, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4You're sensing a trend because this is a list of Japanese RPG composers.
- s0lace, on 01/24/2009, -2/+6FF3
- jhandfield, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4@m0og0o: I agree! It's stupid to limit a list to just one kind of thing, I mean, WTF! Why isn't there a Shelby GT500 on the list too? And no 17" Macbook Pro refresh? WTF!
Buried for lame! - adventflux, on 01/24/2009, -0/+4Number one is no surprise. Even to this day, I catch myself humming the World Map Theme to Final Fantasy VII
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -1/+4What does this have to do about JPEG compression?
- GangsterCompute, on 01/24/2009, -0/+3Come on. These folks stretched a one to two page article into a 6 page ad hike, all leading up to the obvious 1. Nobuo Uematsu. Big f'ing wow.
- urlostinmyworld, on 01/24/2009, -1/+3*woosh*
right over the head. - Sererena, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Castlevania isn't an RPG. Though she did some music for Suikoden, I guess they decided not to qualify her as a "JRPG" composer. I would have been upset they hadn't included Koji Kondo otherwise, he's scored a few RPGs, but overall you can't really call him a JRPG composer.
- luciofulci, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2wtf...
Michiru Yamane anyone? - chiliwilli, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2sound samples would have been nice
- salmonlips, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Jrpg, emphasis on the J
- thizzlebot, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2Crisis Core music was ***** badass, Nobo takes the cake on greatness though
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2Eh, you could very easily argue it either way. Although the Koji Kondo point is dead on.
- RichMan, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2I agree with this list, especially the #1 choice. Not only is Nobuo Uematsu the best jrpg music composer, I'd say he's the best music composer in general, period.
- eanbowman, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1Buried for extremely invasive ads. :C
Find a better site with this article and I'm game. :P - js123js, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1It seems most of the music I listen to nowadays is either anime or jrpg soundtracks.
- dragoonkain, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1In all honestly Suikoden II was sort of her swan song. The rest of the soundtracks in the Suiko series were somewhat ho-hum.
- pearlygate, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1where is Miki Higashino (suikoden series)
- luciofulci, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Symphony and any (2D) game since is an RPG. It may not be turn-based but its definitly an RPG vs Super Metroid which has RPG elements.
- joeleslie, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2I would've buried this if Nobuo wasn't at number one. He is second to none when it comes to game soundtracks.
- Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1FF7 was not his best work, however.
- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1If they didn't include Uematsu they could well not have written the article.
BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTJQLZoafn4 - melonhedd, on 01/24/2009, -1/+2Buried for "Uematsu-sama"
- devfeed, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Not very clever post, but... Seems the server is down. http://homemasters.info
- Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Because JRPGs have the best music, bar none. The American RPGs don't even come close. Jeremy Soule (KoToR, Secret of Evermore, Icewind Dale, others) is pretty much the only exception, the only good American RPG music composer, but he's not well above any of the top Japanese composers.
- ezyeric, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1I agree with the top 2. Uematsu's music has definitely changed my life or at least my view on music/media in general. And Ive had the privilege of seeing 2 (soon to be 3) official FF concerts and met the man himself.
- kadio, on 01/24/2009, -1/+1No mention of Ys and it's composers at all. They INVENTED JRPG music! The TurboGrafx CD versions of the games had the first real composed/arranged JRPG music ever heard in a video game, and I don't think any series has had as many sound tracks released in Japan. From wikipedia:
"The Ys series is particularly known for its funky music soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, Mieko Ishikawa and Hideya Nagata. The composers' works have been remixed for each subsequent release of Ys I and II, most memorably by Japanese computer musician Ryo Yonemitsu for Hudson Soft's Ys I and II, and Ys III: Wanderers from Ys releases for the PC Engine CD-ROM. Combining Yuzo's composition and Ryo's arrangement abilities, this arrangement found itself introducing video gamers, for the first time, to video game soundtracks that can stand on their own as full orchestral pieces of music. Consequently, the Ys series is seen in the video game music industry as groundbreaking, demonstrated by a never-ending series of music CDs based on the series' music, with almost infinite variations on its themes. The only other series with similar impact on video game music industry at the time was Dragon Quest." - Eidden, on 01/24/2009, -0/+0Dugg for Hitoshi.
- Tacorian, on 01/24/2009, -2/+2I personally think Lost Odyssey is Uematsu-sama's best work so far.
- BlueRogueVyse, on 01/24/2009, -0/+0I'm glad that Chikayo Fukuda was mentioned as a possibility, but sad she's not on the list. Her work with .hack//GU was absolutely fantastic.
- timothycrash01, on 01/24/2009, -3/+3I'm sensing a trend here. If you're first and last name doesn't end with a vowel, you can pretty much give up your career in RPG game music.
- rootbeerafloat, on 01/24/2009, -0/+0Shimomura is too low, and no Iwadare?
- LocalDocal, on 01/24/2009, -1/+0Suikoden? Well, that explains it then. I just started playing Suikoden for the first time and the music isn't that good.
- Puffball, on 01/24/2009, -2/+1Its really a shame these composers don't attempt dabbling in more hollywood scoring. they could definitely up the taste a bit.
- ezyeric, on 01/24/2009, -3/+2FF6 actually
- fredrockbluff, on 01/24/2009, -3/+1if nobuo eumatsu hadn't gotten #1, i woulda had to slap a ho
- m0og0o, on 01/25/2009, -3/+1is oblivion not considered an RPG? What about WoW? Both of those games have incredible scores as well. I could list off a few others as well.
- m0og0o, on 01/25/2009, -6/+1oic. well why limit it to Japanese ones then? What a crappy list. Its pretty much which FF game had the best soundtrack as opposed to composer.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 01/24/2009, -7/+1I've always found it odd, how Japanese names are so very likely to have a vowel at the end of them. This includes *every name on this list,* first and last.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure someone could easily make a "Japanese name generator." -
