- iEnigma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63This whole viral marketing campaign is doing an excellent job of promoting "Year Zero"!
- cunnybungler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44I think it's official now. The compact disc is dead. Traditional packaging of music is dead. This is how it is meant to be.
- nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41Awesome track, the .rar file on the thumb drive actually had two files on it. The second one was 2432.mp3 - another spectrograph hidden message showing the phone number 216.333.1810 - VERY DISTURBING CONTENT
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -12/+47has "leak" become the new "hack"? these aren't leaks, they're releases. trent reznor isn't carrying pockets full of flash drives and just accidentally dropping them.
- angelelusive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33You really come to Digg just to say that?
I know that NIN doesn't compare to Hansen or Britney, but... you don't gotta be mean!
You tool. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32There's more mp3s on this this webpage than you think...

You wonder why you're tubez are clogged? I am the ***** using DTA to download all the tracks that I may or may not listen too. - artofwar420, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Indeed, I'm so getting this album.
- trry96, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32This marketing certainly beats expensive promotions from the big record labels...DIGG THE UNDERGROUND
- ninsega, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Keep the bathroom leaks coming!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26"Staged."
No *****, Sherlock. It's called "viral marketing." - wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Holy freakin' hell. I'm changing my girlfriend's cell phone so that number is under my name. That'll teach her to call me every second of the day. ;)

- angelelusive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24MAINSTREAM?
I was going to ignore you and your stupidity, but.. if NIN is mainstream, what would you dub alternative?
Here's the deal....
Granted, NIN isn't as "underground" or exclusively hardcore as it was in the early/mid-90's, but who really is? With the proliferation of the internet, MP3 trading, and the need for more aggressive marketing, no successful bands are "Alternative" anymore. Alternative used to mean just that; "Alternative". Now, alternative music has become more mainstream. There are alternative radio stations in every state and province in every country around the world... in the 80's and 90's, it was called alternative because it was... (wait for it)... THE ALTERNATIVE. Different from the mainstream. Now, there's really no segregation. There is no "alternative music" anymore.. just sub-genres of different types of music.
And you really are an idiot if you've just come here to cause people to "fuel the hype". I'd like to encourage the Diggers to shift from arguing the merits of alternative music, to flaming your sorry pink ass. - Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24true that DEWD! music isn't good unless i can see the band live in some ***** hole in the wall venue, and they aren't signed to a record label, and all of their albums are just cdr's!
popularity = sellout! - fluoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21This would get so tiring if every album tried to do something like this. It's a cool gimmick, and it will probably do really well for this album.. but to try it again would just become irritating.
- nevesis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21This campaign is truly awesome. That is all.
- inim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18ehm, ok ...
if liking NIN means you're gay, im happy to be it. - mstngo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18When this is completly revealed the concept will change the way music is marketed. Atleast good music.
- hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I guess you were a big option 30 fan...
- ShBm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I just dugg everyone up because frenchkick is a douche bag.
This was meant to be below his post btw. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'm starting to think that maybe the official release date is both the simultaneous release of the CD itself, but when all the tracks will be officially put out by Reznor himself. I'm assuming every week or so we'll be getting a new track or two.
It sure beats the ***** out of some asshat getting your tracks early and spreading them across the entire net. Might as well do it before they do and have fun with it in the process.
edit: there are also trolls in here modding down every single comment. - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Wait, I saw the story about the first one with the hand, and this is the third. When was the second track leaked?
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Start the buzz and let the music promote itself. Pure genius!!!
Been a NIN for a while, but I'll tell you...I never saw anything like this coming.
Leave it to Trent to show these record label suits how they could and SHOULD be doing things. - jarogers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This is by far the best track released so far from Year Zero.
- zephyrinne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14This entire Year Zero concept is great! Trent has outdone himself this time, and I'm sure it will only get better from here. Call 216.333.1810.. very creepy. Just another addition to the ongoing mystery.
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@fluoro
No way, if Jessica Simpson released her next album like this that would be bad ass. - angelelusive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The second track, Survivalism, was released officially over the radio.. there was no leak.
There was a California phone number hidden on the back of the new tour T-shirts that had a small low-fi sample of the song, as well as some plot for the ongoing NIN/Year Zero campaign/ARG - simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I love how obscure and discrete this all is. It's far more interesting to be a part of something that requires discovering, something which involves figuring 'something' out. Being an addict to audio programming I'm going to have fun putting these tracks through some tests to try and find more hidden information.
Trent Reznor is a brilliant musician. Much respect.
Aphex Twin has done this kind of stuff with their music, hiding images in the audio for example; which show in a spectrograph. - angelelusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10When the "Beside You in Time" DVD comes out at the end of the month, I'm betting there will either be another track to coincide with it's release, or something INSIDE the DVD packaging that will be a tie-in to the developing "Year Zero" mythology.
- FinalDoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you email the mail link water@iamtryingtobelieve.com it sends this back:

Thank you for your interest. It is now clear to me that Parepin is a completely safe and effective agent developed to protect us from bio-terrorism. The Administration is acting purely in the best interests of its citizens; to suggest otherwise was irresponsible and I deeply regret it.
I'm drinking the water. So should you. - intekra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12That phone number is ***** dope! I can't wait to call it on speakerphone at a party or something before anyone else knows about it.
- derleiermann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Also this are the web pages I've found around that are part of the viral campaign

- voyetra8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It just gets better. As I said in a comment in a previous digg: "Hands down, the best viral marketing campaign I've ever seen."
Pay attention folks. This is what marketing is all about. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I totally agree. I'm enjoying listening to what's been released so far (AND it's legit) while watching the "story" unfold.
There's also word of another CD coming out in 2008 as a followup to this. - xxMarka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I have a theory that NIN will release all of their tracks prior to the release of the album to disprove the idea that a lot of people won't buy their album if they can just get it for free...
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10NIN wouldn't be mainstream if it wasn't for "Closer."
Actually, if it wasn't for the video for "Closer."
Or MTV playing it constantly in order to get back the street cred they lost for playing all that Milli Vanilli.
Now that I think about it, if Trent was dead and making music from beyond the grave, then NIN wouldn't be mainstream. But they are. A live, breathing person making music. I mean really, how much more mainstream can you get than that. ***** poser. - tamurlane6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Cleveland Ohio area code
- SaintNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Loving everyting so far. Can't wait to hear it all and I am definately buying the disc. Very nice work on Mr Reznor's part (music and presentation).
- twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You answered your own question.
"With Teeth" symbolized the growth of the progression. You could have seen this album coming with the changes in lyrics through the With Teeth album.
Trent has said forever that he's always been interested in politics and social change.. the early albums were a journal of the internal growth into being outspoken and political or "having teeth". In some ways it was a full circle too, since that desire to be outspoken was always there (head like a hole) and trent is middle-aged.. so yea..
it will be interesting where he takes this one, since it looks like it's going to end up going in another circle. The internal conflicts are still in this one as the character attempts to look outward at society. The end result = creepier. It all shares a lot of similarities to America in my opinion and possibly NIN's opinion...
anyways it's like 3 am i'm goin to bed - gizmo12688, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://echoingthesound.org/phpbbx/viewtopic.php?t=20399&sid=263d5c4c1162ce5e79226b6c4ff7da70
- mikebrowne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I wonder if Trent is planning on producing a film to go along with this? The story is strong enough it could be done.
- theokandroid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Too cool for school
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Somehow, that number adds up to 23.
- Seruphim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Now they need to Come back to America and Tour this seemingly awesome album
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, I was expecting something a bit more aggressive...angrier. I mean with all the dystopian near-future stuff from the websites and such, I was expecting something more like "Heresy"...y'know...something to get people pumped up and fuel the "resistance."
That said: the phone call was some scary *****. I'll have to listen to that and try to transcribe it the best I can. It gets pretty unintelligible near the middle. - brianwesleyan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8So are "you".
