- thebusdriver, on 01/28/2008, -12/+121but still cool
- Kyle0wnsyou, on 01/28/2008, -25/+106Older than Fibonacci.
- peterg78, on 01/28/2008, -7/+66Far out - best thing on Digg in days!
- aphexmandelbrot, on 01/28/2008, -11/+68Please define "not that good".
I'm a music journalist, and the terminology "not that good" - following up with no real critique or commentary on why those subjective feelings are expressed - pretty much doesn't cut it.
Do you find issue in the lyrics? Do you feel the riffs played are simplistic? Do you hold objection toward the beat patterns and time signatures used? Do you just find Maynard's voice irritating?
Honestly - the difference between your opinion and trolling generally comes down to how much you choose to elaborate on your opinion. It will always be just that, your subjective opinion - but at least if you flesh it out a little bit it will appear to be a solid opinion.
The question is never really you "understanding" the music. If music requires the listener to "understand" - then it's a niche sound (see: Grindcore), isn't good and requires fan apologetics (see: *-Metal), or is good in a way that only a few people appreciate (see: Bright Eyes still sucks). If you brought up "yes, i 'understand' it", then I'd almost be willing to assume that this was a retort from someone at some point in time in reference to your opinion.
I'm not trying to harp on you - I'm just text on the Internet. Chances are pretty good that you'll reference my words as I reference other peoples' words on the internet - that is, I don't. It's worth a shot, anyway.
Just trying to raise the standard of discourse a little. - tastypaste, on 01/28/2008, -13/+68It's new to me.
- PPCG4, on 01/28/2008, -3/+50Who cares how old it is? I've never seen it before.
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -3/+46Music is math afterall.. well its supposed to be, the mindless drivel on MTV doesent count.
- bradkendall, on 01/28/2008, -1/+43Since everybody seems to be hating on Scientology, you may like this line from the song Aenema:
***** L Ron Hubbard and ***** all his clones.
***** all these gun-toting Hip gangster wannabes. - Purin, on 01/28/2008, -6/+45This is old, but still very interesting.
Tool's music isn't EXTREMELY complex like, say, Behold... the Arctopus, but it still has its complexities and is very enjoyable to listen to. The Fibonacci Sequence in the song is just one of many amazing pieces they fit into their music. - pixelwerx, on 01/28/2008, -2/+41"What's going on in there? It sounds like rock and roll!"
"I'm just doing math mom!" - Proctor, on 01/28/2008, -4/+43One of the many of Tools greatest works.
- Elliuotatar, on 01/28/2008, -3/+41Well duh, those celestial objects are really really far away, and light only goes so fast!
- cquilliam, on 01/28/2008, -2/+35Thank you for submitting this. I don't care if it was posted here before and is "older then my grandmother". Not all of us live on Digg, we have lives that we go and take part in. Its nice to seeing meaningful stuff hit this page instead of the usual drivel. Thanks!
- DrywallThief, on 01/28/2008, -1/+28Should I not have submitted at all? A lot of people haven't seen it yet and they were happy to watch it and digg it. If you've already seen it then go ahead and skip this one and look at the myriad of other diggs. It doesn't sound like that much of a big deal to me. Oh and to everyone complaining about this being a dupe - I'll admit that I didn't search for it before submitting; I just used the digg dupe checker and I didn't see it so I went ahead and submitted. Anyway, I'm not quite sure why people have to piss and moan when not everyone sees every single submission on digg and they want to digg what's new to them.
People will digg what they like, it's a waste of time to come in here and complain. - bonk2k, on 01/28/2008, -2/+29Hey they stole my profile image!
- yougene, on 01/28/2008, -2/+23The band studied the use of sacred geometry in ancient temple design before making this album. There's alot more of this scattered throughout their music. Their associate Alex Grey( http://alexgrey.com ) is also worth checking out for similar reasons. He made the cover-art for Lateralus and 10000 days.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/28/2008, -2/+21I thought about posting this a few days ago knowing it was old. Wish I had.
Digg needs an "oldies but goodies" section. - gravedigg, on 01/28/2008, -0/+15Tool is by far one of the best bands ever. EVER.
- ATH025, on 01/28/2008, -11/+24Wow did the guy HAVE to make it so cheesy? You would think he just discovered the meaning of life.
- zheisey, on 01/28/2008, -1/+14Anything with Tool gets Dugg...no matter how old it is
- habenneas, on 01/28/2008, -13/+25What's wrong with you all? What is this, a 0-dayz nooz 5ite? Sheesh.
- piratebr0adcast, on 01/28/2008, -1/+12I think 90% of you guys are douches for bitching about how this was submitted a few months ago. I'm sorry. Some of us have jobs, families, wifes, girlfriends, wives and girlfriends, and we just don't have the time to stare at Digg every day. I missed it the first time, and was glad to see it now. Thanks, to whoever submitted it. OK, Begin Digging this comment down now.
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -2/+13Yes, aren't you experienced in the ways of good music. Bravo.
It's new to quite a lot of people, and for those who don't know, Maynard has been doing this kind of thing for a very long time, and not just with the Fibonacci Sequence. The song "Aenema" is a compound slip-jig, for example. They've nodded to Mozart, Pascal, and Crowley as well, and a lot more than that. - cdcdark, on 01/28/2008, -0/+9Yet "Soulja Boy" is getting nominated for Grammys these days.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 01/28/2008, -0/+9In live shows, they replace L. Ron Hubbard with Rupert Murdoch
- c0ldfusi0n, on 01/28/2008, -12/+21[PRETTY RAD] The Fibonacci in Lateralus
Favorite in Videos - on 10/30/2007
How about digging the one fron 126 days ago?
http://digg.com/music/PRETTY_RAD_The_Fibonacci_in_ ... - darkcthulhu, on 01/28/2008, -1/+10Because there will always be people who have nothing better to do but complain. Let's call them complainers and ignore them in the future - lol.
- seventoes, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8Then leave.
- Quizboy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7I will digg it every time it hits the front page, Tool rocks!
- octophobic, on 01/28/2008, -2/+9I've had this same problem with a friend of mine. He defines anything that he does not enjoy as not being good. Then he claims that I have no taste in music. It's entirely possible he's right but he's never offered anything more than a basic opinion.
- PleaseJustDie, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7Logan's Run is a good movie. May seem a bit dated, but its still a good movie.
- rgough, on 01/28/2008, -2/+9This is called algorithmic composition. It's been around for a long time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithmic_music - imorgan82, on 01/28/2008, -1/+8Learn to swim
- DarkTranquility, on 01/28/2008, -3/+10***** yeah dude!! Behold the Arctopus is awesome! One of the few metal bands still doing worthwhile...
Btw, everyone probably already knows this but just in case.

This is what is known as the "Holy Gift" arrangement of Lateralus. - smackhero, on 01/28/2008, -1/+7some people aren't on digg 24/7 and don't get to see every link/video posted on digg.
and thanks for being the 100th person to remark how old this is. - skyshock1, on 01/28/2008, -1/+7No, that stuff is math too. Just instead of dy/dx(F(x)^2) it's 1+2+1+2.
- Namesbond, on 01/28/2008, -0/+6Wings for Marie/10,000 Days are proof of artistic genius
- Nissmo66, on 01/28/2008, -0/+6Wow, like the 50 other comments saying the same ***** you just said didn't tell me that, Jesus man did you really need to chime in?
asshat - Purin, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6Who's BT?
- ElbertF, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6Good for you!
- ruley, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5Behold... the Arctopus. ugh, fantastic, you know all the scales and can play them all
- Charklii, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5Since when does MTV have anything to do with music?
- lolmax, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6I wish Alex Grey would make the front page of digg someday! I feel I am making an understatement when I say he deserves to be on the front page more than any other visual artist who has ever made his way there somehow
- DrywallThief, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5Maybe because I didn't see it... Honestly, the dupe checker didn't show me that submission.
- MyExSucks, on 01/28/2008, -1/+6Here's something newer - check out Radiohead and the binary theory behind In Rainbows and OK Computer. See also the golden ratio coincidences in In Rainbows and in the binary theory. That's some crazy *****.
Oh, and FYI, the Fibonacci sequence in music isn't anything new. Bach used it back in the day to do chord structure. There was another composer, I don't remember who, who would write songs with 89 bars and have the 55th bar have some crazy dynamic shift or a key change or anything else drastic. (for those who don't understand the significance, 55 and 89 are consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence) - Clark3934, on 01/28/2008, -4/+8I definitely think this is intentional with the "swing on the spiral" lyrics.
- Scynet, on 01/28/2008, -4/+8Usually people say that not because they honestly don't like the music you listen to, but because by criticizing you they appear more professional and more important. It's not just about music, of course. People criticize other people's habits all the time, it's the "look! I'm an attention whore!" thing.
http://scottwax.com/rice/ratedr/attention%20whore3 ... - Coffeedemon, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4You just described Behold ...the Arctopus to a tee. Tool, not so much
