- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Vinyl. The future is DRM-free vinyl.
- garoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think the time has come for the Digg community to come up with an award for the most inappropriate use of the exclamation mark. Its interesting that the market will grow but I'm not going to phone my girlfriend and tell her the exciting new. "The market for mp3 players is growing! That's right, 286 million by 2010!"
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm investing in anything to do with the reversing or fixing of hearing loss due to these devices...
- David1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Isnt flash capacity growing fast enough to see 60 GB by 2010?
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Duh. People spend a lot of time commuting to work. PVR's are better than VCR's. (ergo, podcasts are good) None of my tech friends has an MP3 player (ergo, the market isn't remotely saturated yet).
- st00p1d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Study: Number of exclamation points in front page story titles to quadruple by 2007!!!!
- niiru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Do individuals make such bad decisions about mp3 player purchases that they have to keep buying new ones? or is the supposed number of current non-owners who want one going to rise?
I chose one which is plenty good for me and I doubt I'll need to buy a new one short of the thing dying, it has 20GB and supports FLAC, OGG, MP3, WAV and maybe some others (I dont even consider other formats than those important) it even has a mic and an line-in you can record from.
Plus it doesn't look plasticy and tacky like the same capacity of Ipod does.
*loves his iaudio* - David1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If it only doubles I will be amazed.
I think Flash-based MP3 players will be 99% of the market...the hard drive-based will be dead by 2010. - Tomos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Flash is already at 65 gigabyte sizes, it just isn't cheap.. but it will obviously become cheaper.
Flash WILL dominate the portable player market, depite everyone wanting large drives for their pcs, for portable music and video I think the maximum size people will want will have a limit and flash memory will be there to fill its place. In 10 years when those 30TB drives come out, who's gonna need that in a music/video player!?
The obvious benefit to flash is no moving parts. I also think the read/write lifespan problem will be overcome too. - adjustafresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apparently, in 2010 life will also be discovered on one of Jupiter's moons. It will be a race of giant fetuses.
- dankers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I bought a $15 Emprex Mp3 player that is the quarter of the size of an ipod. You have to provide your own SD for the memory; but this just shows that the electronics will get cheaper and everybody is bound to have one.
I think the only next thing really to do is the headphone market for these things. - caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How about someone just stick a USB port on a cell phone/mp3 player so I can plug my Flash drive directly into it? That would be sweet and easy to share with the wife.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah i predict mp3 player demand will fall as phone capacity increases (and streaming capacity increases)
- jhpope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3[gasp]...mp3 players will get more popular!!! interesting story....but this really isn't a revolutionary idea
- mehtajr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A rapidly growing market continues to grow rapidly? Stop the presses.
- Migdilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4OK, it's official. The Chinese really need to quit having babies.
- gukid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I lolled.
Do they have any idea what will be happening within the next 4 years? 2010 is pretty far off. I'm guessing we'll be using a completely wireless type music player, playing individual tracks as if they were radio stations. By then the music companies will realize that cds are failing, and will instead license music to other providers to distribute whichever way they want to. - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's those fricking iPods. They make an upgraded version every year that is twice as good as the last for the same price. Other than the mini, you're considered a looser if you don't have the latest one... or an mp3 player other than an iPod. I got one of those Rio CD/Mp3 players for Christmas one year when they where big, and it does just fine. True, it isn't as small or convenient as the latest portables, but it works. No one has managed as of yet to make an Mp3/PMP that actually makes me want to spend my money. Creative needs to make their players smaller, and iRiver needs to add more space. I like the iPod, but if it would support FLAC or any other format other than its own proprietary "doesn't work with ANYTHING else" *****, I might conceder buying one.
- mkrygeri, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7my prediction, the "dedicated" MP3 player is dead by 2009. Cell phones will be able to dock tiny mp3 players that can be removed for independant use.
Apple will be the 1st to do this.
- helix400, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Heh, does curtisthompson ever submit stories without an exclamation point? Looking at his submission history, not too often: http://digg.com/users/curtissthompson/submitted
But, maybe to get stories to reach the front page, an exlamation point helps! - MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3by that time I should have the money to buy a 1 terrabyte mp3 cell phone.. can't wait
- monkeyballsoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jo42 Sorry to burst your bubble but it has been done. It's called the volume control.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Driving the demand will be falling price points, the availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online music sites, increasing Flash memory capacities, and enhanced functionality, according to In-Stat’s report."
Let's dissect this shall we?
falling price points: Ipod is not going to cheapen up at all, other MP3 players have had lower price points yet have done nothing to overthrow the iPod.
availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online music sites: People will continue to pirate, even when a music store exists, people prefer to get something for free. Since when did the music store draw customers?
flash memory capacities: Didn't seem to bother people buying the 2gb nanos or 512mb shuffles.
enhanced functionality: Cell phones have had mp3 player qualities for a while now, when you have a pda phone, you can't really pack much more functionality.
This isn't a study, its more like an educated guess IMHO. - Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Front Page, 47 Diggs...
Well by just reading the headline I would like to know how I can get paid to do market research for the obvious.
My first study headline: Study shows 100% of gamers will purchase the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox360 or the PS3 as their next generation gaming console of choice. - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to agree that this prediction is not nearly as profound as expounded by the poster. How many times has the mp3 player market doubled in the last five years.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm investing in overhyped media stories based on the idiocy of a few consumers who can't figure out the obvious. I hear that market is going to explode.
- FederalSource, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course the market will double, every person who has an MP3 player now will have to buy a new one when the batteries or hardware dies, plus all the normal new entrants into the market.
- niiru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I expect the same issue is apparent with CD players and tape players, just an mp3 player can hold a lot of music in a small physical space, so I suppose it makes it easier to just listen for hours on end.
I'm also interested in anything for healing hearing loss though. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The only thing guarenteed to be "dead" by 2009 is Creative and their Zen line-up.
- mkrygeri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The only reason the MP3 cell phone han't taken off is the size and weight of a PDA (or phone).
People probably won't use phones as music players until you can remove the music player from the phone.
So far I haven't seen anyone even thinking about doing that. - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Use the reply button.
Or I'll make that more appropriate for Digg: USE!!!! teh!!!!! Repli!!!!!!!! buton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - CorneliusAgain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have a point, apart from the dockable thing.
My MP3 player is my phone. It now has a 1GB memory card in it, plays MP3s as ringtones, and plays music very nicely through the stereo wireless kit. Plus it has radio and has more or less replaced by old Palm.
I'm afraid I do see MP3 players as another device to be swallowed by the phone soon enough. And the ability to swipe a phone across a sensor for payment is on the way too... - bennomatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think that when something as good as the iPod Nano, with at least 4GB of space and 24 hours play time is available for under $50.00, just about everyone, even those who really can't afford even $50.00 will be buying them. We'll see homeless people on the street with signs asking for 99c, so they can buy iTunes.
But I agree that these are going to really become part of most phones; if they could figure out how to get a click wheel onto a phone (maybe on the back?), that'd make a huge difference. It's like a calculator. Except for the heavy-duty stuff which you'll prob'ly do on a computer anyway, when was the last time you bought a calculator? They used to be $20 when I was a kid, but now they're given away with wallets and bank accounts and so much more. Solar powered, programmable, etc. MP3 players are the next electronic commodity. - gert2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2No way. I'm going to buy a 60 GB iPod. Flash won't be that big.
- sammyc53, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I'm investing in Apple.
