- mcadoar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31) Indeed, nothing near iTunes
2) Agreed tech10171968, VLC is better.
3) dawks, they're not trying to sell it since it'll probably come free with Vista. there's nothing to sell, unless they try just to sell us windows.
4) Did anyone else notice the clear title bar? They were demo'ing it on windows vista. I wonder if they'll release an XP version like with IE7 or if we'll all be forced to upgrade? I'm also wondering if there will be a version 7 or such of Outlook Express.
I use none of the above, I might mention. Right now I use winamp, and Media Player Classic when winamp fails. I attempted to install IE7 beta 2 (needless to say if it fails even before installation I'm not going to bother to report an error.). I also noticed that IE7 doesn't come with any new version of OE included.
Has anyone else noticed how the icons and general feel or layout for IE7, and now WMP11, attempt to mimic OSX with some different colors? Has anyone else noticed that the betas of Vista (or what I've seen from the Longhorn Transformation Pack, at least) mimic it too?
Once songbird reaches beta I'll use it since it's VLC-based but mimics the layout of iTunes. It also uses the Mozilla framework, which means firefox users will like it. Black looks better than that ugly brushed metal, too.
Perhaps I'm just a gullable believer in conspiracy theories but is microsoft trying to make a really snazzy GUI in Vista because they fear they'll lose clients if (or when) Apple makes a processor that'll run windows, in hopes of not losing it's monopoly? Is this basically planning ahead for the inevitable? Is the fact that Apple has made a fortune off iPods and iTunes just a fluke, or was that their plot all along so they could get some funding to put into the whole Intel thing?
Also, we might note that Windows XP runs on many different platforms even now - both Intel and AMD processors, and in 32 and 64 bit versions. Could it be the other way around? Is there a chance that microsoft sees these new Intel chips and says to themselves "Maybe there's a chance windows COULD run on those." and is planning to release vista to run on Intel-based Macs and normal PCs? is it not possible that, 10 years from now, all the hardware will be made by Apple and Microsoft will kill off MacOS in favor of Windows Vista and get back into the business they started in, software? If that happens, what will happen to the price of computer stuff, both hardware and software?
This scares me. I know it's just a media player review, but what does this means will come in the next few years? The most expensive Mac (the highest end model of PowerMac Quad-Core G5s) available on the apple site right now sells for just under $20,000. My worst nightmare is that some day in the future, that will be the price for the lower-end models of PowerMacs, all running Windows Vista 2. That, I do believe, is when we need to see if we can make a big magnet and just pull an asteroid into alignment with the earth and then kiss out butts goodbye. - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks nothing like itunes.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate to say it, but it looks pretty good. A real improvement over the last one; the best features of itunes and WMP.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iTunes is memory intensive. But you have to realize that it's a port of a Mac program. It includes a music player, video player, podcast, multiple file taggin, a decent amount of audio/video decoders, a GUI that supports scripting as well as advanced smart playlisting with nested folders. Not to mention that it's 100% unicode which means my European/Asian/Martian music can coexist without looking like gobbledygook. It also has a built in ripper/burner. A way to encode in a bookmarkable AAC format built right into the system which is important for hearing audiobooks. An app this powerful should not come free. But it is.
Sure, it's a memory hog. But so is Azureus. Some ppl are willing to sacrifice memory for functionality and that is what Itunes gives me. Functionality. And Itunes runs pretty good if you have a computer not built 3 years ago.
And Microsoft has too many smart ppl in it not to be able to come up with a good Itunes rival. I'm pretty sure that WMP11 is already done and ready for a public launch but corporate MSFT fears that releasing it for Windows XP would damage the sales of their Vista Launch.
And their right, of course. Not that it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that there's no single technical advantage Vista has over XP. It used to. But that all got removed. Vista is an early launch. It promises to be a modern OS in the future, but in the meantime, Microsoft needs an influx of cash. They not only want you to lend them money. They want you to do it without interest.
And I do not hold to that. - Stymyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Not to jump on the bandwagon of Microsoft bashing, but this looks a lot like an iTunes clone."
Not to be disrespectful, but this cracks me up. So they both have a list pane on the left-hand side. Is THAT all it takes to be considered a rip-off of iTunes? These two programs look NOTHING alike, apart from the list pane. - adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@VanderVander
>So iTunes uses more resources in Windows than WMP11 does?
>
>I wonder how WMP11 will compare to iTunes in OS X regarding resource usage.
>
>Oh, that's right...WMP11 will use 0% because it will never exist for OS X.
I think you submitted too soon. I can't find your point anywhere in your post. - hellsyeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Really im sure all these itunes bashers have never actually used it at all. Is there a reason almost everyone I know only uses itunes for their music?"
Um, probably because they have iPods? And unless you want to go through a work around with most other programs you can't sync the ipod with other programs? - grislygus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Three people said that they don't like Media Player. I have yet to see one post denouncing Microsoft... don't you already feel stupid?
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1featuring a clean, visual interface and excellent performance
I'll believe that when I see it. WMP6 had a clean interface... each successive version has had a more cluttered, unusable and downright obstructionist interface... not to mention butt ugly. I swear, MS has put a bunch of Photoshop amateurs in charge of UI design in the past 5 years. Maybe WMP11 will be a switch back to usability over shiny things, and not waste half the application's window space on chrome rather than content, but I'm not holding my breath. WinAmp for me, thanks. - grislygus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow. I didn't think anyone actually liked Media Player. Hell, I just use VLC.
- keej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can hardly believe the amount of bashing being done on WMP.
Accessing large playlists in WMP isn't particularly hard if you have your files tagged/stored correctly. Click genre type, browse alphabetically by file path, double click. It's no problem at all accessing 40gigs+ of MP3s this way. Visually I don't know how people can deride WMP while simultaneously praising iTunes' interface. Personal tastes obviously, but iTunes is no glamour.
In terms of bloat, WMP is currently using 12 times less memory than Firefox. I never notice any performance issues that are solved by closing WMP. I doubt the majority of people hating on it have used it within the past few years. - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How bad does it hog resources?
Not in the article? Just what I thought. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that wasnt a review it was an Editor's Take - kind of like a preview.
CNets actual reviews are much better. - timmyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How bad does it hog resources?"
Well, you have to consider that it is intergrated into Windows, so it probably doesn't "hog" a lot of power. iTunes is a lot worse than any other media player out there; it basically needs Quicktime to be installed and it runs Quicktime every time it starts. - bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to jump on the bandwagon of Microsoft bashing, but this looks a lot like an iTunes clone. Everyone copies someone and every (well known) media player out there seems to be a rip from either Winamp or iTunes. If you're running Linux, try out Muine. It's simple, clean and actually innovative.
- SteveEisner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to know they're attempting to fix speed across 10,000s of tracks. Hope they introduce some mass ID3-fixing tags too.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of off, iTunes sucks. It's slow at startup, hogs resources, and the larger your playlist, the more fun you'll have waiting for it. Having said that, WMP 10 also sucks, but not as bad as iTunes. It somehow recognizes my iPod and copies music to it, which is weird, but hey Realplayer 10 does that too.
The VLC player like you guys have said is the best. I use it for pretty much everything except audio, which is handled by Winamp. Winamp and VLC are alike in that they aren't bloated and don't take very much memory. Now, I really don't care about memory consumption, because I don't really multi-task very much. I usually run at the same time: a video, surf the internet, IM and email.
The new WMP 11, looks really nice. I can't believe you guys say it's an iTunes clone. What are you talking about? It looks nothing like it.
Lastly, Microsoft bashing was a thing of the past. If you make fun of Microsoft, you're basically acting like a retard. Saying "M$" isn't going to make you cool. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think some of us should be more like qwerty967...
And omg... this apple/microsoft bashing/fanboy crap is REALLY annoying.
I love my Mac. I love my PC. I love my Linux box. Why do we see something released by microsoft and all instantly shout "microsoft sucks... apple 'roolz'"?
Frankly, it makes the person saying it look stupid, and it really isn't helping the company/ideal that you are advocating.
As for Windows Media Player 11; it looks nice. I'll use it when I get a chance, and if I like it, i'll use it. If I don't like it, I won't use it. I won't go around telling people it sucks just because it's not to my liking.
I think iTunes is nice, and I'm also very fond of VLC.
[ if I'm using Linux, I prefer mplayer ]
-- kyle - QettoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got a dual core and I'm still scared of the damn resource hog.
- anthony808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn... this is too little, too late.
- VanderVander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@adizzy615
My point was that Apple is at least trying with iTunes for Windows even if it does use more resources.
MS has stopped developing WMP for OS X. But, if they did port WMP 11, it would probably use more resources on a Mac than in Windows because MS can't hook WMP into OS X like they can hook it in their own OS.
This is also true of Apple's iTunes for Windows development efforts. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm I dont know what version of itunes most of you are using, but with my library of 7000 songs itunes works perfectly well.
And im using it on a pretty slow ibook 1.33ghz.
It loads quickly, searches on my library are basically instant. No problems with slowdown at all.
Really im sure all these itunes bashers have never actually used it at all. Is there a reason almost everyone I know only uses itunes for their music? Oh yes, its because, its simpler, faster and generally just works better than anything else. - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Musicmatch, excellent program, especially for large libraries. winamp just crashes my lappy all the time and WinMedia, a necessary evil because some sites "have" to have it, same as quicktime and real...
Bah - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://img119.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wmp5fj.jpg
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I currently use Winamp, but this new WMP looks like it might actually be good! I'll have to give it a go sometime.
- iniquity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hell if im the only .. i can admit i like media player .. its ok for what i do, and its fast for playing movies and music. if i'm going to burn or download music i have other apps for that.
microsoft isnt to bad, everyone just hates on them. - fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... best version ever? did you mention DRM? WMP just is bloated crap. Same with itunes although it is better looking IMO than WMP.
GO amaroK!! - jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still no support for iTunes .m4a format (the non DRM one). I'm not reripping half my library to mp3 for this. Another thing ..
..MP11 has no DVD support out of the box. I understood for the original xbox, at release MS was not part of the DVD forum, so had to pay per device to support dvd playback, which is why on the original xbox you needed the remote to "activate" dvd playback. Now MS are part of the dvd forum, which is one of the reasons xbox360 does have dvd playback out of the box. Why not MP11?? - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer QuickTime and iTunes because I'm a mac user but when I was on Windows last year WMP 10 sucked and this is definately a big improvment.
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The latest version of Windows Media Player is the best yet, featuring a clean, visual interface and excellent performance"... but also riddled with DRM. No diggie.
I use mplayer: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ - jaknet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Tetrachromatic
"Winamp's underdeveloped Media Library can't deal with large libraries"
Sorry to say ... but you better check you facts.... or get a decent pc (I'm on a 2 yr old AMD 2.5g).... and I am using winamp and my library of music is 140gb and just over 20,000 files... and works perfectly... it's also the fastest to sort / scan that amount of music.
@G-RaZoR
As for VLC sucking...ok the interface is not the prettiest... but you show me ANY other player that comes able to play such a range of movie codecs "out of the box"... in fact I have not had to use a single codec to to play anything !!!
@OBKenobi
"YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO USE THIS PIECE OF ***** THANKS TO MICROSOFT'S MONOPOLY"...... sorry do not understand this WMP comes with XP BUt that does not mean you have to use it ... and regards Vista ....... In fact VLC and Winamp both work perfectly in Vista. So just because it's there does not mean you HAVE to use it. Same as IE. Its there but I use firefox (also works on Vista).... and shouting does not make you any more correct............. you just look a bigger prick - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously, who cares.
I use SonicStage because my Sony walkman lets me get 400 songs on one CDR and I have to use it. Actually, I like it. - HighDecibel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Winamp? Screw microsoft is all I have to say. Media player always sucked
- SDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One more thing. If you complain about this being a resource hog, maybe you should upgrade your P2 300Mhz and 64MB of ram.... Well, Just a thought. I have no problem with resources using WMP.
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If vlc would handle playlists like wmp10 its would be sweet but no it has to show the file path instead of the name.... so i cant use vlc with the wmp skin.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's the kind of substantive, hard-hitting, analytical review I have come to expect from CNET.
"Here's what it looks like from the front. Here's the back. Here's the side. Here's the on button. It's pretty. This is CNET." - energeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can it do everything Amarok does in audio?
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone saying VLC is the best media player is a huge anti-microsoft person. VLC honestly sucks. The layout is terrible, and the options/features are *****. Not saying WMP is the best, but it looks way better. I like VLC on linux mainly because its the only decent media player on linux, but at the end of the day, it just plain sucks.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn let's pray for a lot of changes. Media Player 10 + Windows Mobile 2005 = HELL. Hopefully MS can fix these problems so I don't feel like hitting myself in the head with a tackhammer everyday.
- RustyBurrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why everyone says WMP is so bad. I used to use iTunes but then I switched because of various reasons and i'm liking WMP 10 much better. It just runs a lot faster on my computer. Don't get me wrong iTunes is a good program but WMP seems to have more functionality.
- Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes for music
MPC for movie
no digg for WMP 11 :)
btw if you like the skin(actually i like it too),follow:
http://www.coreguy.com/p/wmp10skin.php - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am testing vista beta2 and windows media player 11 is nice :)
I still like iTunes though :) - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Best WMP yet" doesn't say much, considering the record of the program.
It needs to be more open, like, you know, less DRM, more iPod support? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Integrate Windows Media Player 11 into your Windows installation CD:
http://addons.wordpress.com/2006/11/14/windows-media-player-11057215145/
The ultimate dream of every Windows Media Player 11 fan:
have Windows Media Player 11 installed since the first boot of Windows. - macbirdie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since version 10, Media Player is really a nice piece of software. While playing music it's taking up like less than a 1MB of memory when minimized to tray and 12MB if restored, is really fast and the Start Bar toolbar option is really great, especially for a video I don't have to watch in full screen and want to do something besides watching.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know how iTunes fans can bash Windows Media Player... iTunes is bloated piece of garbage.
foobar2000 for music
Media Player Class/VLC for video - LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cant wait.
- sharedferret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg for showing 311 in the preview.
- domino1241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For music, WMP 9 has worked for me for a while, and I have no reason to change. And I must say, ColorCubes is the best visualization out there for a 700 MHz man like me.
Oh, and to anybody who thinks we're being forced to use ANY Windows Product, you can always dual boot Linux, as I do. -
