- lead2thehead, on 02/07/2009, -0/+27No loss there. Magazines are 90% advertisements these days.
- kmoed, on 02/07/2009, -5/+31Playboy starting to go under must be a sign of men losing interest in woman right?
/sarcasm - lead2thehead, on 02/07/2009, -0/+22Lots of people still listen to metal... just not in your little clique of friends.
- Devine122, on 02/07/2009, -1/+22Brutal...

"Print is dead."
- Egon Spengler, Ghostbuster - Slashered, on 02/07/2009, -0/+18I still feel this is more of an indication that print media is hurting rather than metal being in trouble. Although music as a whole is down across the board, bands such as Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Megadeth are still selling well, and their concerts are still selling out. Wacken, the largest festival in Europe, a metal festival, sold out tens of thousand (possible hundreds) of tickets this year in record time, before they barely announced any bands! There's even an entire pretty popular pseudo-metal show entitled Metalocalypse on Adult Swim, with Dethklok's shows all selling out and the album doing well on Billboard.
Additionally, while I've always felt Metal Edge was kinda lame, Metal Maniacs has had good content and has helped hundreds if not thousands of up-and-coming and underground bands, many of which are not underground anymore, especially in the thrash, death, and black metal scenes. To trash them and praise Revolver is pathetic. - Pirate45, on 02/07/2009, -0/+17@lilamae
How dare you! May the metal gods pronounce great judgment upon you!! - Miamisun, on 02/07/2009, -11/+27Hmm you can either look at it as Print Dying or Heavy Metal interest dying.
- JonTheGoose, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10More like men losing interest in paying to see some boobies when they can get it on the internet free, anonymously and in whatever flavor kink they like.
- moktail, on 02/07/2009, -0/+10@lilamae: A significant amount, I would say. Do you think otherwise? If so, why would they change over?
- GodsHand, on 02/07/2009, -3/+12Heavy metal magazines going under is not proof that print is dying. Especially these two, which had limited circulation and neither had great articles. Revolver is much better.
- giveer, on 02/07/2009, -0/+9dude, besides the corporate metal days of the late 80's, heavy metal has survived almost exclusively as a subculture. Almost on purpose. Heavy metal never set out to "impress" as many people as possible - if anything, its motto was: If you don't like this, then ***** You.
On top of that, you need to open your eyes a little if you think no one listens to heavy metal. There are so many styles and sub-genres, the term "heavy metal" has become far too general to define one particular sound.
And if you feel you need to see something substantially mainstream, may I point out a game called "rock band" that you may have heard of. Oh, and when AC/DC's album was released last year, there were count them: THIRTEEN Ac/Dc Albums in the Neilson / Soundscan top 100 albums. With 5 of them being in the top 6.
- That fact still blows my ***** mind. (for those "source please" people: http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/18590 ... 7th paragraph down.
Hope this helps.
Listen to some metal while you're at it. You might actually like it. - ColonelJessup, on 02/07/2009, -1/+10No way. Metal is alive and stronger than ever. It is American metal that is dying. There are tons of great new metal bands coming out of of north and eastern Europe, South America, and even Japan.
American metal has been diluted and watered down with all that nu-metal, emo-screamo, metal core, bubblegum mallcore pop ***** that is is increasingly difficult to find real good American metal bands. There are a lot of good American metal bands, but they are hard to find. - jhanc, on 02/07/2009, -1/+9*Subjective music opinion*
- Picciuto, on 02/07/2009, -5/+13I don't think it was the internet that killed metal magazines, I think ***** metal killed metal magazines.
Now were did I put my indie rock vinyl records? Oh there they are on top of my vintage pile of indie rock shirts. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+8It wasn't completely ***** metal's fault, it was also putting non-metal bands in metal magazines. ***** like Drowning Pool and Evanescence wtf!?
- FishHammer, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7a netbook can't double as emergency toilet paper
- davidg11, on 02/07/2009, -0/+7Bang your Head
- xero69, on 02/08/2009, -0/+6Print is dying. I think books in general will survive my lifetime but newspapers and magazines need to go digital ASAP if they want to stay profitable.
Last Metal shows I went to were sold out, so the interest is there assuming it's good music and not corporate owned BS - Walker2323, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Metal health will drive you mad
- Octanum, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6No, but it's possible men are losing interest in the women in those magazines.
- oda1, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Print may suffer, but it will never die. Nothing beats sitting on a can and physical turning the paper and hearing that sound.
- wedges, on 02/07/2009, -1/+6could this have something to do with the fact that metal isn't mainstream anymore? or maybe because Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold are NOT replacements for early Metallica and Iron Maiden? I used to love metal, but modern releases are just sad and dated.
- nzhamstar, on 02/07/2009, -0/+5Just gotta get more brutal dude. Metal has evolved. There are tonnes of genre's within metal itself. If you liked Iron Maiden, try Necrophagist and Psycroptic. Sure the vocals may be a bit brutal but if you're a true metal fan you will admire the incredible *INCREDIBLE* guitaring.
Bring on the NZ Summer Slaughter 09, Dying Fetus and Necrophagist ftw. - bradleyjx, on 02/07/2009, -1/+6The last major card gaming magazine is going under next month as well in Scrye magazine, which has been around since '03. There were three genre magazines just 2 years ago.
...gone because, like many others, the use of the web for finding information eclipsed the print media long ago. - FishHammer, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5just DON'T TAKE PC GAMER. PLEASE. I can't haul my desktop into my bathroom. Some of us still like to read on the toilet.
- ruick, on 02/07/2009, -3/+7print bites the dust? what are we talking about here? gutter metal mags...? ......
- nzhamstar, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4Not heavy metal anymore.. just metal and all of its subgenres. More than 45 subgenres. Metal is very defined.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Heavy_metal_ ... - TheWriteGuy, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5Actually, if magazines were "90% advertisements" they wouldn't be shutting down.
- RageMoreJacko, on 02/07/2009, -0/+4It could, it would just be expensive.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5Cue the commenters who will say something derogatory about metal, along with a blurb indicating how much they love indie rock.
Whoops! too late! - Cerebron, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3At least netbooks would be nice and warm.
- nzhamstar, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Heavy metal is for pussies lol...
Brutal Death Metal and Technical (not techno) Death Metal are where its at.
Not to mention, symphonic, power, doom, speed, trash, melodic, goregrind, death, math......................... - jedinate, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3R.I.P. - Metal Edge. I spent my late teens reading every page of every issue.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4Umm, if that were the case they wouldn't be going out of business.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/07/2009, -4/+7inaccurate titlte.
Print is not dying because two ***** butt rock magazines are going under. They were a niche market and had low production value to start with.
Print as a media form is not dying. its changing and evolving to adapt to a digital world. Its survival of the fittest. The best will survive and adapt.
Unless everyone stops leaving their homes, tangible media is still an effective means of communication. - anachronaut, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Scrye has been around since 1993, not 2003. Never read it, but about 15 years ago I ran a store that carried it so I knew your date was off. You probably just typoed it.
- bipolarruledout, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3The genres are all totally meaningless now. Try asking a band what kind of music they play and getting a straight answer. Nobody wants to be pigeonholed so we have "indie" which is really just an aesthetic and offers no actual meaning into what the music sounds like.
- lonelycanuck, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3You cant kill the metal
The metal will live on! - inactive, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3I do. I'm a major doomster and not only do I listen to it, but I make it.
- techtest, on 02/07/2009, -0/+3Actually if 90% of all statistics were true then this statistic would be true.
- one504, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Kind of surprising about Maniacs, actually. Advertising is in the tank across the board, though, which hits niche publishers the hardest.
- nzhamstar, on 02/08/2009, -0/+2FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS EVIL!!! AWAKEN AND MAKE ME A SAANDWIIICHAAAA!!!
- ReligionKills, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2I blame it on wimpy kids these days getting too many paper cuts.
- Jacare, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2the trees used to make paper are from tree farms and were planted specifically for the purpose of being turned into paper, in case you didn't know lumber is a renewable farmed resource.
- fonderplague, on 02/08/2009, -1/+3I'm sure a few billion people are facepalming themselves right now at this twit. Go choke.
