- 7IM80, on 10/12/2007, -6/+62Inaccurrate reading ability not an inaccurate title.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -5/+60The title isn't saying they are. It says that this software takes the streaming Pandora music and turns it into MP3 files which are DRM-Free.
- matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52I kind of hope this doesn't work. I love Pandora and would hate to see the music industry cracking down on them. It's one thing to crack content you've already paid for, but this is a free service.
- qwertygirl, on 10/12/2007, -11/+53Give a girl a break! I meant the end files are DRM-Free mp3s. Getting drm-free files these days is mega-tough. Knowing that the end product is free as a bird, I believe, is an important part of the story.
- Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I agree. Pandora is one of the best sites on the net. If it is damaged by this, we will have lost a great FREE resource.

- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16convert = change, "to drm-free" ~implies~ "from drm'd. "
I'm with mbthompson. It's a poorly worded title. - joeyjojo, on 10/13/2007, -1/+12What are they 'stealing'?
All this does is copy a file out of the cache that's already on their computer.
PLEASE don't use the RIAA's term for 'stealing'. It's misleading at best. - banjk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Buh-bye Pandora...how we loved ye!
Damn these hackers and their wee-beedy eyes! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is a really stupid idea. Getting DRM-free mp3s is already very, very easy if you're willing to break the law. There are thousands of torrent sites, usenet groups and p2p applications dedicated to allowing the transfer of mp3s. Why take a really innovative, useful, free service like pandora and jeapordise its future by making it easy to use it illegally?
I've got no problem with illegally copying mp3s, but please don't open up a great free service like pandora to legal troubles just to make it slightly easier for you. - mctyler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Actually all it does is copies the cached files out of a temp directory and renames them. Pandora stores the files as mp3 already. You just have to know where they live and rename them.
Having said that, it is a great little tool that has been dugg before. - Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Because there aren't a million and one OTHER ways to get free, better-quality music.
Go to a torrent site, and stop hammering this wonderful service with traffic that will likely get it shut down. - virkato, on 10/13/2007, -0/+8http://www.virtualrecordings.com/ahra.htm
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This program is genious, but I hope it doesn't spoil a great thing like Pandora. If something like this really catches on, the RIAA will start to put the pinch on Pandora. The best part about this program is it doesn't record in real time. What ever is playing is cashed. This little app just helps you get that sweet cached music in delicious mp3 format.
BTW - who ever made this app, major props :) - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You're supposed to know that Digg users don't like to answer questions that could be answered by Google.
And now you do. - fireflyx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8128 kbps, right?
- MrBone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My problem with this hack is that it might kill off Pandora. I like Pandora. So if people kill it off, and any interest in other startups like this, then you have just shot me, my friends, yourself and your neighbor in the foot.
Thanks. - blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Whats the bitrate of the mp3s?
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I could care less whether or not it's legal- I don't care if it hurts Michael Jackson that I steal The Beatles' music off limewire or bittorrent- it's just wrong to hurt pandora, they have to support it somehow
- cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"no cost != free"
Rasler, you are absolutely correct. Its a real disappointment to see people modding someone down for being logical.
Way too many people equate the two - e03179, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I agree. Just because getting music is EASY doesn't mean it is legal.
- wax0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As posted below; the server is getting crushed by the load. Here's the Pandora Jar file everyone is on about:
http://www.plunder.com/Pandora-s-Jar-download-3022.htm
Use the installation instructions posted by 'davak' further down in the comments.. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Right and Wrong in who's eyes?
You never taped music of the radio as a kid on your boombox?
Are you now a hardened criminal due to that piracy that obviously cost the industry millions of dollars? - LoathRevolver, on 10/13/2007, -4/+10It's publicizing junk like this that puts badass sites like Pandora out of business and lets mega-corps win lawsuits. Whip out your $$$ and pony up the cash-ola for music you'd like to support. Or, keep this type of stuff on the download.
- MyDocuments, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13"Ok so it's converting them to DRM Free mp3s from what?"
from drm-free mp3s. it's not the author's fault you assumed otherwise. - Real-ity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You're circumventing ad revenue for Pandora.com (unless each user of this is also a paid subscriber). That's not cool. If you're already not paying, why take the extra steps to make their life more difficult by keeping the music they're already letting you listen to for free, and removing their advertising based income opportunities?
- fibbonacci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you know anything about Pandora, you know that this isn't news. Pandora transfers already unprotected MP3's to your temp folder and you can copy them out, rename them, and play them with ease. Sounds like all this Java app does is try and save you a step. Thanks but I'll stick with my tried and true method.
- fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Let's see... Pandora sends an MP3 file to my temp directory and if I decide to keep it, this is stealing.
Next, you'll be telling us that we can't burn DVDs from our DVRs... or fast forward past the commercials.
Right... - virkato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Do you even have a clue how Pandora works? As it streams, it creates the MP3 and saves it to
C:Documents and Settings - *user* - Local Settings - Temp - plugtmp - ohnosomeonesagonnasueme.mp3
the full files are ON YOUR MACHINE. WATCH OUT HERE COMES THE FBI - drunkJerkface, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And blame the bad metaphors on our over crowded public schools.
- conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When people say free they usually mean "I don't hand over money." In which case, Pandora is indeed free.
While ads might sometimes be obtrusive or anoying, you're still not handing over any money yourself. Look at it this way: When you buy a box of cereal, most people will look at how much cereal they get for the ammount of money they pay. But all that oney doesn't go towards cereal, some goes to the store, some goes towards advertising, packaging, etc... but to the end consumer, it doesn't matter. Same here, to the end user, it doesn't matter how a service is supported. They either paid for it themselves, or it's free (in their minds).
Okay, enough symantics. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@matrox212
Agreed - does hacking have to destory EVERY attempt to provide a decent service related to music? Hope all you pirates enjoy it while it's here, because you may very well destroy it in the process. - alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's the Dugg Mirror: http://www.duggmirror.com/music/New_EASY_Pandora_Hack_Converts_tunes_to_DRM-Free_MP3s/
- chrisduffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been using this for a while now but kept it to myself so Pandora didn't gent wind of it and make a work around. I wonder how long it'll be before they "fix" this?
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you try to download this app off the forum, you must go to the last page of forum. The link is broken on the post but here is the fixed link:
http://www.tengbob.com/pandoras-jar-beta.3.b.zip
This is the most current version according to the forum. - mraty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://www.pandora.com/
- redcard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Show me where you are reproducing the copyrighted materials. Show me where you, NOT Pandora, copy the file to the cache. Show me where you, not pandora, translate, reverse engineer, modify the mp3s core information, or create derivitve work. Show me where you, not Pandora, circumvent the technology used by Pandora. What Technology is used? How do you "get around" their technology?
They put the file there, in unprotected, unDRM'd and playable format. As the end user, you are accessing a file on your drive that was placed there by a program. It's no different than looking at an old browser cache to remember your friend's street address when you mapped to their place a few months back. Caches are NOT the property of the program who placed the cache, and when Pandora does nothing to protect their assets save rename files, they are the ones not showing due diligence.
Like I said below, people walking into your house and purposefully hiding a stack of money in your house without your knowledge do not get to come back and claim you stole their money when you found it and spent it. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
If Pandora wants to do something about this, they should FIX their SOFTWARE. Why does a streaming media provider have to place entire copies of streamed media on a computer to work? - pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4very very cool service - So much music I havn't heard b4! I'm going to do the pay service, something like this should be supported.
- DigitalDud, on 10/13/2007, -4/+8Digg should take this link down. This software isn't legal and its just going to give digg a bad name for linking to it.
- onesix18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would be very upset if anything ever happened to Pandora.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8God damnit you guys, don't you realize that this type of crap being continually released will only result in Pandora eventually being shut down? DON'T jeapordize what is one of the most innovative (and FREE) music projects to ever come around. ***** everyone who uses this and/or shares it with others.
- TreasureChest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I tried it and it doesn't work because it's looking for the wrong version of the swf file
Here is the patched working version download:
http://www.plunder.com/-download-3029.htm
It's working and my mp3 collection is growing by the second. - bilz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This "open architecture" that Pandora has had for a long time has been known for a long time. Those who know about it, take advantage of it, and there have been SEVERAL apps like this written by basement developers. Nobody wanted to release something like this... because they knew that as soon as they did, Pandora would close their architecture.
The person who released this app has ruined it for everyone... - mhaulk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I didn't see this posted by anyone else so if you are having trouble getting it to work, a fix was posted on Hak5 and I have copied below.
"Looks like Pandora has updated their flash file..
Beta 3 is trying to call https://www.pandora.com:443/radio/tuner_6_9_0_3.swf while Pandora.com is calling https://www.pandora.com:443/radio/tuner_6_9_0_4.swf
To fix this, just update the URL in pandoraGrabber.html"
I hope this helps anyone with problems. - nrambeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pandora makes it clear on their service terms that making copies of their streaming music is prohibited. That alone makes it illegal.
http://www.pandora.com/legal.shtml - drunkJerkface, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No, he said on the mouth. ;)
- davak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5
Server is getting crushed. Here are the directions from our site. Thanks for the honor...
Pandora is an amazing music service. If you want to actually save the music to your hard drive to keep forever and forever, these steps will allow you to do it easily. Burn straight to mp3 with tags, titles, and sorting intact. Brillant!
You need firefox as well.
1. Go to pandora.com and setup an account.
2. Download and run Pandora's Jar. This forum post has the latest installations.
3. Click the Extract All Files link to uncompress the files to a directory on your computer. I use c:pandora
4. Goto the directory that contains your downloaded files (c:pandora)
5. Double-click on pandora.jar.
6. The file will launch and you will see something like:
Welcome to Pandoras Jar
Attempting to lauch on port 80...OK
[ready, lets grab some MP3'S!!!]
7. Visit http://localhost in firefox
8. Firefox should load with Pandoras Jar version of Pandora
9. As you listen, the mp3s will be created in a directory called mp3 in your original pandoras jar installation directory (c:pandoramp3)
Major props to Hak.5 for these directions. I've been following this thread for a while now. Somebody requested that these directions be condensed into one place so I posted it for everybody to enjoy. - benjaminrayburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the analogy to recording off the radio is just a rationalization. You did not agree to Terms of Service to use the radio.
When you accepted the Pandora TOS you (among other things) agreed that you will not:
3.1 use the Pandora Services to reproduce copyrighted materials;
3.2 copy, store, edit, change, prepare any derivative work of or alter in any way any of the tracks streamed through the Pandora Services;
3.5 translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, modify or create derivative works based on the Pandora Services or any portion of them;
3.6 circumvent any technology used by Pandora or its licensors to protect content accessible via the Pandora Services;
I'm not a lawyer but I think renaming, moving and preserving cache files may be prevented by some of the above language. -
