It's a good alternative to torrents if you know where to look for RS links. Plus there are lots of forums with RS links to old media or abandonware.
- jawdog, on 01/21/2008, -0/+31So, providing a data transfer service is ok, but if your users commit illegal acts with it then the service is liable. Kind of like how gun manufacturers are liable when someone murders someone with a gun right?
- tsf5000, on 01/21/2008, -0/+28I just DLed from rapidshare today. It's still up and running.
- Enigmaxx, on 01/21/2008, -1/+18The article has been updated to include new information, including confirmation that the rumors that Rapidshare has been shut down are not true and that vandalism of the Wiki page appeared to contribute to the confusion.

- smacksaw, on 01/21/2008, -3/+17But everything on ***** has a password! How did they ever figure out "popcorn"???
- dave98, on 01/21/2008, -1/+15sure if you don't mind installing spyware
- AC41LLES, on 01/21/2008, -0/+14You make take away my music, but you leave me my porn
- augmental, on 01/21/2008, -2/+14Damn, you bastards have to ***** with everything that I love on the internet, don't you? Rapidshare has been the only way to get really rare and out-of-print music. Go blow your moms, you a-holes.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/21/2008, -2/+13"hey, hey you. Yes you, internets man. Search through millions and millions of uploaded files and if you miss a few, you're *****!"
What the hell are they thinking? The RIAA are going to be singlehandedly responsible for the fall of easy and widespread file sharing of any type. I swear if they had their way we'd have to ***** run everything that we upload onto the internet through a series of moderators. - MScrip, on 01/21/2008, -0/+10There's plenty of other file uploading sites. Are they gonna take them on next?
- Jareth86, on 01/21/2008, -0/+9So let me get this straight, if your site is even capable of being used to send an mp3, your site is criminal. So much for... every file hosting site ever?
Holy *****, the RIAA has got to go. - kavery, on 01/21/2008, -1/+9Obligatory '***** the GEMA' response.
- flameboy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7what about those password protected rars? better not miss those either...encrypted you say? well then decrypt them! or how bout you just remove everything that has our title in its filename?
- unusualbob, on 01/21/2008, -0/+7Sites such as this should just request that the RIAA and GEMA should create some sort of transparent, cost effective way to filter or control this content without hurting the efficiency of the site. They would be fully willing to implement it whenever it is available, bug free. Of course by the time they would finish developing something like that file sharing will have evolved beyond that technology and it will no longer matter.
- netdroid9, on 01/21/2008, -1/+8Virtual Machine FTW.
- Markpdotcom, on 01/21/2008, -1/+7Wow...
- ixach, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6Rapidshare is the fastest, and most reliable uploading/downloading website for warez. It will be a misfortune if they go down.
- magicaltrevor, on 01/21/2008, -7/+13I love Rapidshare. Torrents are unreliable, and you can get RS links for pretty much anything on sites like Warez-BB or ProjectW. Let's hope they go Pirate Bay on the RIAA's ass.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8megadownload.net lol
- inactive, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6We're rapidly moving to a situation where we will have to encrypt ALL our files and traffic to stop courts sticking their noses into our activities. Encryption will slow us down, but only a little! Once we're all streaming encrypted movie rips to each other through SSH tunnels, what will courts around the world do then? Shut down the f****** internet?
- Khast, on 01/21/2008, -0/+6Welcome to the new world....the one which is going to stay at the technological equivalent of sticks and stones. We can't download anything because it *might* be illegal. We can't say anything because we *might* be terrorists. ISPs want to charge you a premium for broadband, but heaven forbid you actually use 10% of the total bandwidth available.
Next generation of internet will be like broadcast news. You won't be able to interact, you will be told what pages you can view. And there will be no need for hard drives, because it will be considered as illegal to download Linux, or other open source projects. (Someone has to be the copyright holder, so comcast, and other ISPs will have the right to block them.)
Net Neutrality, HERE WE COME! though, it's nothing to party about. - evilpoptart, on 01/21/2008, -1/+6the war goes on.
- jazh, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5R-S is very useful when ISP's such as my university seem to use traffic-management against torrents, P2P.
- flameboy, on 01/21/2008, -2/+7I hate copyright holders.
They think you either must make every data transfer service be able to filter out their works or you have no business operating it. What a twisted world we live in where these copyright holders have the power to hinder other technologies that do good, such as rapidshare, simply because they MIGHT hurt them for an indeterminable amount of money. - netdroid9, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Dearest, beloved Comcast, Inc.
I refer you to article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.". I view your monitoring of my communications as an arbitrary interference with my privacy and correspondence, and additionally view your prior message as an attack on my honour and reputation, and would kindly request that you both cease monitoring my online correspondence and formally appologise for your accusations, lest I be forced to take these matters further.
Thank you again for being an *****,
J. Bloggs - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5If everyone moves to another host, they won't be able to handle all the storage and will start doing the same thing RapidShare is doing. I LOVE RapidShare, and my premium account is probably the best investment I made, it's just $10, and it makes download 10x easier.
- Daggity, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Have you listened to the new albums lately? ***** moron.
- skywake, on 01/21/2008, -1/+6I don't know whats more sad.... The fact that you thought of that song or that I know what song you were thinking of. My case is probably worse considering that hearing "hey" more then once causes me to see a fairy that is constantly telling me to listen......
- Khast, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5You have exceeded your monthly encrypted data packet allotment, encryption methods are to be used primarily for secure websites, a 1.6GB encrypted stream is most likely not you talking with your financial institution. Any further activities of this nature on your account will be considered as possible illegal, and must be ceased immediately, or your account will be suspended.
Please contact customer service if you have any questions regarding this statement.
Thank you again for being a customer.
Comcast, Inc. - uker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4everyone loves free stuff.
- cl0n3x, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4Hey guess what? I use a little something called usenet for downloading whatever I want. I'd like to see them take that down; oh wait, THEY CAN'T ;D
- iMyst, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4Shhh, you're not Anonymous here.
- pintomp3, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3or everyone loves to share.
- imdwalrus, on 01/21/2008, -5/+8""hey, hey you. Yes you..."
...I don't like your girlfriend? - bdbr, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Not that the RIAA isn't a problematic, self-defeating organization, but if you read the article you'll find that they're not even mentioned.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3You're right! I guess that's what I get for posting on a skim, sorry about that!
- dksupremacy, on 01/21/2008, -2/+5Inaccurate, Buried, they were just rumours
- Ninjazn, on 01/21/2008, -2/+5Rapidshare is amazing. You can download at much faster speeds than torrents, and you have a lot to chose from.
- Markpdotcom, on 01/21/2008, -2/+5I'm sorry but unless you are a premium rapidshare member, rapidshare sucks! Tiny download limits, millions of ads, weird ip range blocking, what is that waiting thing for? Sucks! I'd prefer it if they were honest "Look, click this banner, we'll get some cash to pay for hosting and you can download your pr0n!"
- bdbr, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3If the "rights" organizations want any content pulled from Rapidshare, all they have to do is ask and Rapidshare will delete it.
And what of the labels that benefit from downloads? These music cartels don't represent them (they're not members); should Rapidshare be forced to delete their music as well? I bought two albums just today (from independent labels) that I'd discovered via download sites like Rapidshare. I'd have never heard these otherwise. It sounds like the "rights" organizations are just trying to make sure we only discover new music on the radio, where they can control what we get to hear (all music from the big labels they represent).
None of this is about rights - its about control. - flameboy, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3have you seen the recent independent studies showing no correlation between downloading and album sales?
here let me link you to an analysis, moron : http://www.news.com/2100-1027_3-5181562.html - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+4EXACTLY! Oh wait.
- SovereignGFC, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Doesn't Rapidshare's ToS say that users are responsible for the content they upload and RS cannot be held responsible for said content? Good luck "cleaning" 4.5PB of storage...
- mongrel, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Noooooo RS is my safe haven, leave it alone you bastards!!! For everything you can get, a $50/year premium account is SO worth having. Mega sucks my salty white balls.
- rand0mm0nkey, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4Wow. You could RTFA.
- Enigma776, on 01/21/2008, -1/+3this is the only time and i mean the only time i will support this sort of thing, rapidshare is the worst place on the internet the service sucks and it hates proxy's. Bye bye rapidshare die with some dignity.
- AlgnPelotudo, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2THEY CAN TAKE OUR PORN, BUT THEY'LL NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!1
- MScrip, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I visit a blog that has tons of remixes of songs. They primarily use Mediafire to host the MP3s, but they have used other file hosts as well. These types of songs aren't even sold anywhere... so you can't buy them legally. Thank goodness for file hosting sites for giving us the music we want.
